Work-Out Facilities

Just a tip from one runner to another...I am 6'2", I walk into the gym for the first time and see the treadmills in front of the HUGE windows and I want one, running with an ocean view! well there's a very low ceiling over that section and I kept bumping my head on it and finally gave up and took one in the back of the gym. So, just be aware.

Ok, jumping in for another question on the gym:

For free weights, I see that there are dumbbells, but is there a barbell and plate weights? A squat rack/power cage? And how high do the dumbbells go?

DH and I lift weights and I'm trying to figure 1, if we'll have time to go (yeah right), and 2, whether they have the facilities we use.

Dh and I worked out everyday on both of our previous cruises. Never had a problem getting a treadmill or any other cardio machine. I agree with the other poster that if the waves are bad you'll feel it on the treadmills. We also ran on the track twice and never had a problem with people getting in the way or slowing down. We usually ran out there in the morning through or on a port day.

We used the free weights as well. Now I'm trying to think back and this was a 1 1/2 years ago so it might have changed. Dh does up to 85lbs for some of his free weight exercises and he was fine with what they had. Most of the weights above 20 there was only one set of through. There was also two benches in front of the dumbells. There was not a squat rack when I was one there. The reason I remember that was b/c I had to do squats and lunges with free weights when I usually use a squat rack. There are some arm and leg machines in there as well.

And you do not have pay to use the fitness center. Someone also mentioned having to pay for the fitness centers at WDW resorts. I've never experienced that at any of the WDW resorts we've stayed at. They've all been free.

Thanks for the info. Wow. 6:30 is late to open. I usually run at 5:30. I stayed at the Corronado Springs in 2003, and had to pay $25 for the length of my stay to use the gym. We stayed there again, Nov 2006, and there was no longer a fee. They must have gotten rid of it. Maybe complaints -I'm not sure, but I do remember not having to pay that second time.

Just got back from the Magic...

I ran four times, 3 on the track and once on the treadmill. The track was fine. I did have to alter my route a couple of times when they were swabbing the deck. One time I actually ran on Deck 10, which I didn't realize allowed you go all the way around, but it does. I had to swerve around some people, but no big deal. I wasn't running that fast. I was never in the gym when there weren't open treadmills, but I didn't go in before 9 a.m.

As for the weights in there, there was one small area with a lot of dumbells. I think they only went up to 30 pounds or so.

They seemed to have about one machine per muscle group for the other weight stuff.

Also, while at sea, you do feel the ship moving while you are running (both on the treadmill and the track) so that's a little odd.

On my cruise, they hosted a 5K run on each of the sea mornings, with pubmaster Jay leading the way. They all just went out and did 10 laps on the track together at 8:30.

Ack! I was hoping that daisy112878's report was true since we would definitely need the 85lbs. DH is telling me not to worry and to take the week off

I'm sure you can find weights in there to lift 85 lbs. I was just referring to dumbbells. I don't usually use free weights other than dumbbells, so I didn't notice what else was there. You could certainly get whatever weight you needed with the machines.

I think this is a very funny thread. I'm on vacation. The only place I am running is to the buffet :rotfl2:
Enjoy your exercise. And I apologize in advance for the slow people walking around deck 4. That's me. After a big meal, I need to walk it off!

I'm not a runner...too boring for me and not good for my knees. I used to run long distance years and years ago (ok High School), and I frequently suffered from shin splints. In my adult life, I have been more into aerobics, pilates, yoga, whatever the class. I was a dancer in my younger years as well, and love to bounce around doing difficult steps to music. It too gets your heart rate up and I love learning new routines. On my 2 RC cruises, they had a gym w/aerobics instructors and really fun classes. Does DCL have anything like that? Or just the machines?

Yes! They have sunrise yoga, pilates, aerobics, cycle... they list it every day in the navigator, but you can get a schedule from the fitness center as well. I only managed to make it to one pilates class. Dang that was hard!

We don't use the machines, since they isolate muscles and we do compound exercises (squats, deadlifts, etc). I'm sure we'll figure out something! I was just hoping for the higher weights so we could do dumbbell squats and the like at least. Thanks!! :goodvibes

Did you ever think that some people may like to exercise?

And yeah, I adore weightlifting :cloud9: Not a runner though! Did the Women Run the World 15k in May and that's quite enough for me!

That's cool...I don't know if they did that when we went a couple of weeks ago...but then again, aside from Mickey's breakfast, we slept until 10 on sea days...lol

Did you ever think that some people may like to exercise? :)

It was just a joke. Of course I know some people enjoy exercising. It is a vacation and everyone SHOULD do what they enjoy best. For me, I can exercise anytime when I am home. I look forward to my vacations to do things I only get to do once every few months. Everyone has the right to their own opinion and spend their time on the cruise anyone they want. I'm sorry if anyone was offended, but it really was just a joke and I meant no disrespect.

And he is very adament about that!:lmao:

Keep your eyes out for the Nov. issue of the Open Air supplement in USA Today. DH, who works for them, will have a story in there about how you can indulge on a cruise vacation and not gain weight describing all the things we did on our May Western to fight the battle of the bulge. You CAN have your souffle and eat it too!

I knew you were joking! I actually got a good laugh from your post. THANKS!!!

Have you ever been to a crossfit gym?

I think I fall into the same category as most people.

When you have been working out for a week or so, you love to exercise. It is such a rush, makes you feel good. You cannot imagine NOT working out.

Then, once you are off the wagon for a week or so, exercising is your nemesis. It takes days, weeks, months even to drag your butt back into the gym; there are a million and one reasons for not working out.

Yup, that's me in a nutshell. I am going to try to work out on board at least some, because if I don't work out at all, you can bet that once we get back home, not only will I have gained 20 lbs from the delicious food, but I will have no motivation to work out either.
