I currently teach middle school history, recently finished my MA in Humanities, and have a little baby at home. My DH and I were planning on me staying home next year (cost of day care alone is enough reason to quit, but I really want to be there for my DD as she grows up). I am totally willing to do something to bring in money, but not sure what. My initial plan was to teach at a local community college, but my hours may not totally qualify me. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

Does your local community college offer online classes? You could look into seeing if there is an opening for that. I have a friend that does this.

I quit working to stay home when my son was 2, and daycare was getting to be a nightmare. I keep 2 children from my home, and have done so for 10 years now. It isn't a large income, but helps to pay the bills and buy the "extras", and has allowed me to be at home with my children. You could look into a couple of 2 or 3 year olds... old enough to play with each other and not need constant care from you.

Check into online tutoring sites or even online colleges (your MA may be enough to qualify you to teach at Univ of Phoenix).

Also consider tutoring students either in your home or at their home for an hourly rate. You can have the teachers you know recommend you.

This might be a good one for you -- someone here on the Dis recommended this and I got into it -- the company that scores standardized testing (they do the Illinois testing, ACT, GMAT and others) hires at-home people to work on scoring testing. Right now, I'm reading and scoring essays from 6th grade standardized testing. It pays about $12 an hour, you can do it from 20-40 hours a week at home, on your own time seven days a week. It's not regular -- you may work on projects throughout the year, but you don't necessarily know when a project may come up -- the projects last maybe a month or two each. You can turn down a project if you think you won't have the time during the timeperiod. You can apply through www.flexiblescoring-il.com. Your teaching experience will definitely help.

As a teacher, I'm sure you could do well sitting for a one or two kids per day. With only one or two, you likely wouldn't need to be a licensed daycare. Or of course you could also do the full-blown licensed day care and have more kids.

Maybe you could also offer tutoring in your home. Find out what the national chains (Sylvan, etc.) charge and under cut them a bit.

I was going to suggest tutoring as well.

I pay $40 an hour for DS7's last year K teacher to tutor him in Math. I dont know if that is a bargain or I am getting ripped off but he likes her and he just stays after school so it works for now.

Hey I will jump on this thread! I am a manager for a large chain coffee shop. I am looking to do something that will allow me to spend more time at home. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to teach online or at a local university, but I don't have a degree. I do, however, have 25 years of hospitality management experience. Do ya'll know of anywhere that I could look into?

I was just actually having a similiar talk with my mom about this yesterday.

I'm not finished with school yet, still have a couple years to go...but I do plan on being a elem. teacher. When I have my babies I want to be with them too though!!

I would first look into teaching online college classes if I was you.
I don't know how they pay, but I'm sure part of it has to do with how many classes you teach.

Another thing my mom was telling me about is a medical correspondant (I believe that's what it is called) She said the work isn't too hard, you can do it from home on the computer. You have to do a little bit of schooling for it, maybe 3-6 months? But once your in, depending on how much you work you can make at least $40,000 a yr, which is almost/about what a teacher makes plus you won't be paying for day care. I believe this is equiv to working a real job, meaning you get benefits and such from it too.
I really don't know much about it, as my mom just told me about it yesterday...but I'm sure you can look threw google to find out more.

If your good with this sort of thing, maybe you could consider Avon? Again, don't know much about it, but it may be a good choice. Doesn't seem too hard..

Maybe when your childs a little older you could consider being a lunch/recess aid..

You could also consider actually working in day care. The one I work in now if I had a child it would go for free plus its the field you are in..

Truth be told, most people aren't interested in history/humanities tutors (can't imagine why ) since most kids tend to struggle with math or reading/writting. It would be so cool to do something like run a cake business out of my house! But I wouldn't even know where to begin...plus I would probably need to take a few courses to learn new techniques like with fondant (so glad my degree is going to good use! )

Thanks for the tips! I had always wondered how to start a home-based bakery with costs and such. Then what do you charge people?! I actually thought about sending out flyers to people for holiday goodies! Just still got to figure out the prices....
