If you are planning on flying on the big Screening Protest Day, be sure you get to the airport extra early. I know of one airport that has already posted signs that they will not be holding flights back. If you are late getting to your gate because of the big protest, you will probably miss your flight. So plan on giving yourselves lots of extra time to get thru security.

Just thought I would throw this out there. Supposedly the TSA thinks they will be staffed enough to handle any problems that may arise, but I wouldn't really count on it.

You can alwasy get a Magical Express bus earlier than the normal 3 hours before your flight. Just be sure to make the request morning of the day before checkout, or sooner.

If your last activity in town is a meal, better to do it at the airport inside security and plan extra time that way. Then if something goes wrong, you should not miss your plane.

I have also been reading reports that they have been turning off the new scanners at many airports. They may be doing this so they don't have to deal with the protests this week.

HA, that would be quite the deflator to all of the people planning to show their power with this protest..... when they get there they get through like normal and no point is made..... brilliant!

Actually, a point would be made because it means that TSA is backing down.. or really, afraid.

If I were flying that day, you can bet I would be protesting 100%. And, btw, just because they aren't going through the naked machines, doesn't mean they still can't opt to get the pat down.

If the TSA turns off the machines on the busiest travel day and feels we would still be safe with out them, then we do not need them for any other day. Which is it? Do they believe we are safer with them or not? Why put citizens thru all this if it doesn't make us any safer?:rolleyes1

i wonder if they would put on a fresh pair of gloves if i request it. i wouldnt want to be touched after those gloves have been God knows where.

Yeah we told my brother this. They are flying Wednesday afternoon and plan on getting to the airport 3 hours early. They dont think it should be a problem because they are not flying out of a huge airport but they dont want to risk it.

He is already pissed about having to get there so early and is going to be extremely pissed if they get there 3 hours early and still have problems.

His fiance has a huge fear of flying and is already nervous about flying. Being late and the extra stress of maybe missing a flight would not sit well with her.

Aiports don't "hold" flights for this... the airline COULD but I would not count on it.

(I also expect this to be a bust! Most folks will decide just to get where they are going and MOST of the "protestors" won't even get the opportnity unless they are also protesting the old metal dectectors. That's the part most of the hysteria misses.... at no airport are these used for 100% of the passengers.. it's SUPPOSE to be random or something...)

Any protest that disrupts the plans of others is thougthless and rude - and this protest in general will mean nothing.

TSa could care less if you fly or not.

People should have been "protesting" at the polls over the past 9 years when things like the "Patriot Act" were shoved down everyone's throats.

People need to stop taking it out on the front line TSA agents who don't make these decisions.

Exactly!

Yes they will - I always ask them to change their gloves before a pat down and again before the touch my CPAP. Every once in a while I get a snippy "don't you think I'm clean?" type response. A reply like "it isn't personal, but your job requires your hands to go places that may not be clean" seems to do the trick.

Was protesting all along. As for the TSAers . . . they chose the job.

Where do you think they've been? I've seen CPT Tripss' response already, and do understand about wanting to keep medical equipment sterile (as sterile as possible, anyway) - but up until last week, all pat-downs were done entirely over the clothing. Even now, at least according to reports, the only deviation from that is checking inside the waistband - NOT, apparently, delving down, but simply running the hand inside the waistband of pants/skirts for the circumference of the garment.

Is there a problem with the clothing of your fellow passengers?

Other than groping crotches and butts, I think that those gloves have been rooting around in other travellers dirty unmentionables when the screener was on that position, handling shoes that stepped in who know what when they were on that position, picking stuff up that wan on the floor that all the unshod people were also on, and who knows where else. More than a couple screeners told me they liked the chance to get out of the gloves . . . management at PHL apparently doesn't like them to use too many gloves a shift.

Thank you. I wasn't aware they moved from position to position with minimal glove changes.

Although the 'dirty unmentionables' surprises me on two fronts: first, that travelers leave these items floating around in their luggage instead of contained in some type of packaging (e.g. improvised plastic laundry bag); and second, that a thread in which people have been so blatant and forthcoming with blunt terms suddenly goes delicate, referring to underwear as 'unmentionables' :teeth:

No problem, always willing to provide new facts to folks. Even with packaging, TSAers sometimes have to root in the bag looking for something. They wear the gloves for a reason.

speaking of protests, i wonder how many will protest dwts if palin's daughter wins tonite

Okay....seriously??? What do you respond with when we are talking about a TSA employee that has had the job for awhile now, long before this new screening proceedure started??? Do you truly think they really enjoy 'touching' you??? Really?

As for the protest....it is going to hold up those who either set off an alarm or who refuse the back scatter machines (I refuse to use those other 'alarmist' terms). If anyone is out there protesting, then I wouldn't imagine that it is going to affect the folks who are going through the old metal detectors.
But I have to tell you....their protest isn't going to serve any purpose other than to annoy everyone. I have to tell you..if I got pulled out of my line to go through the new scanner and that line comes to a screeching halt due to some protester, then it's not going to be pretty. It just isn't fair of anyone to negatively impact someone else. Why do I get to chance missing my flight because you don't want to go through the process???

The TSA isn't going to turn off any machine. That's what I have heard on several different reports.

If the opt out protest has lots of participants, it will have meaning. The media will make sure it does.

You are right that TSA doesn't care about the number of people flying. It only matters as to the staffing level to take care of the anticipated passenger load.
