Woohoo,Snow(Not)

Sometimes it's all about timing.

I live in an area that generally handles snow fine (Cleveland), but last night, the snow hit right around 4-4:30pm. It was only an inch or two, but with the cold, everything iced over and being rush hour, all the plow and salt trucks were stuck in traffic with everyone else. That's how a 20 minute commute turns into 1 hour and 15 minutes (and that's after doing some backroads that avoided some of the bad traffic areas).

Well, final total for our town was about 2.5 FEET. Traffic was snarled for hours, took my DH 50 minutes for what usually takes 15. School buses actually got stuck- a few on the road & an elementary school actually had to keep kids there til the early hours of the morning when the roads were better. lots of schools with snow days today.

2 1/2 FEET  At one time?? :faint:

Where in the world do you live?? :confused3

Egads! I hope there weren't any bad accidents! Stay warm and safe!

:rotfl2:Yep, in a suburb south of Buffalo. This isn't the worst storm total we've ever had either. In November of 2014, we got 6 feet in 24 hours. That was fun. Not. Every time something like this happens, they call it a "once in a lifetime event". I've had at least 6 once in a life time events go far. :sad2:

Oh yeah, I seriously don't like snow.

The November of 2014 one was the one that really just hit specific parts of Buffalo, right? I recall the pictures of the storms coming off Lake Erie and how if you were on one side of the storm, you got very little, but those in the path were utterly buried (as I assume you were on the unlucky side?). Lake effect snow is a strange thing.

ETA: This is the picture I was thinking of...

Yes, that's it exactly. Yes, I am on the snow side! Similar situation this time but not as dramatic. Everyone got an inch or two, but then the snow band stalled for several hours & the same towns got hit again. About an hour south of here are several ski resorts, they love this stuff & are less populated so less traffic issues. Problem here is narrow, older roadways plus much more traffic when everyone tries to leave at once. All it takes is a few accidents or a stalled semi & everything gets backed up.

Oh well, still better than a hurricane!

We live just north of Victoria BC and we have had a light dusting during the holidays, but nothing to stop traffic. Unlike Vancouver which got dumped on. Poor DD7 wants snow so bad so she can do her Brownie weather badge, one of the thing she needs to do is build a snowman. The forecast has been teasing her forecasting snow and then its just cold, clear, or light overcast, but no snow.

So, I had to go to store earlier, because my pets get ticked if you don't feed them and have clean litter, lol. It was about 10:30 and the grocery store was packed, a guy was restocking bread. I got my pet needs and got the heck out of there.
I was originally planning on going to the movies for the matinée, but I just came back home to avoid the crazy on the roads.
In honor of the impending storm, tonight I will be watching The Shining so I will be greatful my area doesn't require snow cats, lol and the Castaway, hey if Tom Hanks can last for years in a island, I can stay snug in my house eating cookies and smores.

The problem with snow in the south is that some people panic, some people have to go out and see everything when they should stay inside, some people are clueless and the rest suffer because of it(The same happens here the first snow/sleet/freezing rain of the year after a few warm months). Being from MN all my life snow and cold being the norm, its hard for me to understand but if you just relax and let mother nature do its thing the snow will disappear quickly because the ground isn't cold enough to keep it even when temps are below freezing.
and..
and her next job in Minneapolis for the warmer weather
I highly disagree with us being warmer than Winnipeg, i bet we are pretty similar with weather at least in the winter. Nothing warm about MN in the winter, I am looking foward to my next days off being a sultry 10 deg F high with a -15 low, alot better than all below forecast that was last week. Just saying can't wait for my Florida trip

OP here. Whew, glad it is over with. 11 inches here, I think we are good for rest of winter, lol.

Average January temperature in Minneapolis is 15 F
Average January temperature in Winnipeg is 4 f.

You're down right balmy in Minneapolis.:flower1:

Here in Boise they have declared a state of emergency due to our snow and are calling it Snomagedden.

We do get snow each year but only an inch or two at a time. In the last 15 days we have got more snow than we usually get in a year. We are averaging 9-12 inches of snow with each storm. For the first time in my life they have had to plow the neighborhoods since everyone was getting stuck trying to get out of their driveways.

Plus tomorrow we are suppose to get rain which is going cause our 3-4 feet of snow to melt and flood everywhere. Then add more negative temperatures and we are going to be covered in ice. This week is going to be lots of fun from the sounds of it.

MrsKackSparrow4Life: Stay safe, snow, flooding, then ice, a triple whammy.

Portland, Oregon just instituted a mandatory tire chain or winter tire requirement to drive on a couple of main artery roads. They actually state it must be a tire meant for extreme winter weather, which sounds like the US/Canadian tire industry's "snowflake on a mountain" symbol must be on the side of the tire.

The big issue they've had are abandoned cars parked at meters or where there's a time limit. Some have been left there for weeks.

It's raining here, but not cold enough for snow. Still, I've got my chains in case it ever gets to the point where I need them.
