WONDERous adventures on the Panama Canal - 4/23/17

Don't leave without us!! We're Mark and Linda, from Indiana. This is cruise #6 for me and #3 for him. We scored a secret porthole room, and need the year between now and our sail date to figure out who is staying with the dog! - our boys are grown and gone, but someone may need to move back into the nest for a couple of weeks :)
How awesome! I am hoping for connecting SPH when the holds drop off (I know it's a long shot, but worth a try :) ) Which room are you in?

Out of curiosity, any idea why the Castaway Cay excursions are on the Panama Canal Port Adventures page? Is it possibly to fit a day in at CC before heading down to Cartagena? Maybe this is why they have the Panama Canal showing up twice as well?

We went to Castaway Cay on our Panama Canal cruise in 2008. But it seems that DCL doesn't do that currently. Maybe the Eastbound one will?

I think it has to do with whether the PC cruise begins or ends in Galveston or not. Ending in Galveston it's out of the way to go to CC. But, ending in Port Canaveral or Miami, it's do-able.

We are in 5024. If you snag 5022 and another SPH on the starboard side, we would certainly trade to help your family have the two connectors. I don't know how to make that happen, but maybe the TA does...

Hi again Julia, it's Joh here. I loved the private mixology when we did it on our last couple of cruises and was also look at setting something up for this one. Hoping to get a couple of other private tastings going too.

Would love to do the sparkling wine/Champagne one and the one with chocolate! :) :)

Hi, everyone. We just booked this cruise yesterday and are very excited. We're headed to Alaska for seven nights on August 15th, which will be our 7th cruise. PC will be our 8th and longest cruise. It's me, Vicki and my 25 year old daughter, Caitlin and we will be happy to join in one or two private mixology classes and possibly some other tastings as well. Any tips you more experienced cruisers have for those of us who haven't sailed for 14 nights before would be appreciated.

Will see what I can do ;)

Good afternoon and :welcome: I am one of the lucky ones who did the PC cruise last year and absolutely loved it. One of my main tips would be bring half the stuff you think you need (you will have plenty of opportunities to do laundry) and be prepared for it to be hot and humid. Captain Puckett's talks are very informative if you want to learn more about the canal and it's history. There will be plenty of group events, which is an excellent way to get to know your fellow cruisers. We found one of the highlights of our last PC cruise was seeing people we knew constantly all over the ship - it really was like sailing with extended family.

I was discussing Captain Puckett's talks with my husband last night. We were wondering what next year's would be about since we will be going through the new canal. Do you think he will still do the history of the old canal? I can't imagine the story of the new canal would be as interesting.

Read your trip report yesterday and enjoyed it very much. Now I know why this thread popped up so fast, as you all have been planning this for over a year! :)

we are definitely looking forward to the PC talks. Not really sure that I know much of the history at all. We really enjoyed the naturalist talks on the Alaskan cruise and kicked ourselves for not attending them all once we realized how informative they were.

we invited my BFF and her husband to sail with us, they're taking some time to think on it!

I need to read some trip reports soon! and brush up on the port excursions

DH and I were just having dinner and I remarked, somebody would be cruising in our stateroom this week. The nerve of them..... :rotfl2:

I just read this report from 2 years ago and it was amazing! Loved it!

Hi everyone!

My hubby and I will be joining you all on this cruise! This will be our 5th cruise with DCL (gold, here we come!) - we've done 2 Alaska and 1 Caribbean cruise, and this summer we are going to Alaska again! We are a couple in our 30's/40's, no kids, and we live in northern British Columbia Canada. Looking forward to the next year of obsessive planning and researching with the rest of you!

Any

Ok, I totally did just score 5022, I'm going to try for the other side (I'll keep watching) but I have a sideways cabin on that floor (5013) booked just down the hall too, so we may be fine with just those. Thank you SO much!

I honestly don't know whether he will still cover the history of the old canal. I imagine that he would. Like you say, the new locks are not half as interesting - although I believe they continued the cut started by the French, so there is at least some history there. I look forward to seeing what (if any) new information there might be included.

I hate to think that somebody else is in MY stateroom and sitting in MY seat at dinner :rotfl2:

I honestly think we aren't going to take any of the port excursions this time (we only actually did one last time - Cartagena). I am looking forward to visiting Puerto Vallarta this time, since we skipped it in 2015.

Actually, it was from last year but, yes, Erin's trip report was really good :thumbsup2

:welcome: to the group. I would love to do an Alaska cruise, but I'm really not keen on the cold weather. Maybe you (and others that have done it) can persuade me why I should.

Looks like you snagged 5013 when we released it - we were able to switch to sideways cabins on deck 6, nearer to our friends.

Wow Molli, that is an awesome picture! It gets cold her (minus figures in the winter) but is generally fairly mild (around 40F in the winter, 60F in spring). I like to be WARM though and can't imagine going on vacation to somewhere that I would need to take a coat.

That being said, I do REALLY want to do an Alaska cruise, it looks so beautiful.
