Wonder if this trend will stop???

Disney has banned smoking in almost all places, they've banned swim diapered kids from the pools, and you cannot wear any type of gang/profane clothing in their parks or on their ships. Think they'll ever ban thong bathing suits?! I fear the trend is growing and it's just not a pretty sight!

I mean, doesn't it border indecent exposure (and for the record, Speedos should be banned too, gentlemen!)?

My 72 yo dad and I were waiting on the steps for the Aquaduck. The woman/girl in front of us had a thong bathing suit on. So, first, it's just a tad awkward to have butt cheeks in your face. Second, my dad said, "Wow, she has just a bit of a wedgie, huh?". Third, she was not model status whatsoever. In addition, we saw several women wearing them.

I don't know, I'm thinking maybe we will see at least a "thong bathing suits are allowed only in the adult areas" fine print soon???

I agree, I don't think thong bathing suits should be allowed on Disney cruises and at Disney pools/water parks. It doesn't matter if the person wearing them is model status or not. Disney is a family oriented place and I don't think allowing thong swimsuits sends the right message. There's a time and a place for it, and Disney is not that place.

My issue is they banned surge protectors (ie power bars or power strips). Phone, tablet, laptop, GPS, games, and travel companion's set of equipment? Just not enough outlets in the cabin.

Smoking is banned because of the fire hazards and health risks to others.

Swim diapers have always been banned, not just by Disney, but all cruise lines due to health hazards.

Gang related clothing or slogans are banned due to the potential to incite violence between groups.

Thong bathing suits, while not pretty on most people, simply don't fit into the above categories.

Just because DCL bills itself as a family friendly cruise line isn't sufficient to ban thongs. Family has many definitions (I am a family of two adults). Europeans have a very different view of what is and isn't inappropriate. You see a great deal more (or less?) than thongs on TV and beaches in Europe even where there are families and children.

It's very difficult to make the case to ban certain types of clothing based on personal judgements and values about what some people consider to be inappropriate (or cringe-worthy), especially if it's legal. For the record, I don't like seeing thong bikinis or speedos on most people even if they have great bodies, think that women who wear hip hugger jeans be provided with a mirror before they leave the house (especially if they have muffin tops or show their thongs above the waistband), and wish that my cousin would not wear tops that show so much cleavage that I can see her shoes down through it. But that's just my personal feelings. I wouldn't expect to have those items of clothing banned because of it (well, except for my cousin who really needs a mirror and a better sense of what looks good) or just restricted to certain areas. If DCL wouldn't enforce a request for no shorts in the MDR's I find it highly unlikely that they would put in such a rule or enforce it.

How on earth could they enforce the rule even if they wanted to? Would they have cast member running around with measuring tapes to ensure that the bikinis had wide enough straps? I don't think anyone has been harmed by seeing too much skin.

DH says the same thing about trying to enforce any such rule. But if they can enforce the clothing and make someone remove a shirt that says something vulgar, they can tell people to cover up their butts. Or at least put it in italics in your cruise docs or something!

No, definitely not harmed by seeing too much skin (unless you include nightmares of grossness), but your butt is exposed. Period. Not even partly covered. No one on these boards will ever convince me that is ok. And it's not a matter of being in shape or not...because really who's to say who looks good or doesn't look good, but if you think a string between your cheeks is a bathing suit, you are wrong.

I personally don't see the attraction of wearing a piece of dental floss to "cover" your butt crack. I mean how can that be comfortable? I just think it is very difficult to write a policy on what swimsuits are acceptable and what are banned.

I don't think that will ever happen. First of all, I would feel bad for whatever Cast Member was on swimsuit patrol. You also have to keep in mind that Disney Cruise Line attracts an international client-base, and the ships are registered in the Bahamas. While we tend to be a bit more modest in our swimsuit choices in the United States, not all cultures view such exposing attire as inappropriate or taboo.

Also, have any of you been to Disneyland Paris? They actually sell men's low-rise boxers with Disney characters' faces on them all over the parks.

A similar thing happened it us while my 8 yo DD and I were in line for the Aquaduck. Except a quite large, very hairy European man was in a thong type suit in front of us. It was very uncomfortable, because yes, his bare butt was literally right in our faces. We did not move ahead as quickly as we were suppose to and tried to turn away from his direction the entire time we waited.

I agree with what a couple others have said. Thongs/speedos don't pose a health and safety risk to anyone so they really don't have a case to be banned. Most other cultures(other being not the United States) view it as very normal swim apparel. I grew up with a more modest apparel style, but through my travels, I have learned to really accept how others wish to be dressed as they will accept the way I dress.

If it was a problem for you, the simple solution would have been to leave the line.

I would have never thought to see this thread here; I thought my experience to be more unique, I suppose. While in line at the AquaDuck we were behind a (not unattractive) female in a thong. The level of steepness in those steps sure does put the rear end right in your face doesn't it?

The only time it became a little too awkward was when my 8 yr. old DD looked at the small line of Spanish text on the right cheek, turned to me, and asked out loud, "Daddy, what does that say?"

Maybe they can implement a rule that says no part of your buttocks can be exposed and men can't wear shorts that are more than an inch above the knee. Actually, maybe Disney should just hand out approved bathing suits. I'm thinking something like this.

Don't Mickey and Minnie wear something similar to that when they go to the beach?

I personally have never seen it nor do I pay too much attention to what other people are wearing. I guess the exception would be someone's butt in my face but I could always get out of line or look the other way.

We saw those thong bikinis on our recent trip. I didn't mind it too much until I saw the girl sit down at the bar. Not sure I want to sit on a seat with that much bare butt having just been there.

Didn't know about this until recently.. A Speedo is like a 1920's bathing suit compared to this... :rotfl:
