WOOHOO. Did you see that game? WOW. Congrats to the Canadian Women's Hockey Team. In spite of some horrible refereeing. 13 penalties?????????????

Excellent turn out for the team, and a great way to shake off that sting of pre-olympic defeats, woohoo!!

:bounce:

They played awesome. Imagine the Americans putting our flag on their dressing room floor and stomping on it. They deserved to win that one.

What a game! It's especially amazing when you consider that they lost the equivelant of more than 1 period to penalties! I think that it should be a rule that the ref can't be from one of the countries competing in that game. Congratulations Team Canada!!!! You did a great job!!!!!

Baboo, that is the first thing that i thought when they introduced the referee. They couldn't find a non North American one to ref the game? She should have been ashamed of herself with her blatant pro American calls.

hockey mom, that flag thing was what upset me most.If the Canadians had done that, the American press would have pounced on it.I liked what Haley Wickenhieser(dont know if that is how to spell her name?)said at the end of the game"I wonder if they would like us to sign that flag for them?"I got a chuckle out of that.

Congrats to the golden ladies. Now just to wait for 2pm and the mens game.

They were amazing!:D Congratulations to all involved with the women's team!

But I agree that there is no way that a ref from the USA, should have been allowed to do that game! Serious conflict of interest don't you think?

Can't wait for this afternoon and our guys! ;)

GO CANADA GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

.. The story I heard about the Canadian flag on the dressing room floor was that it was placed there as a reminder of what (who) they were up against. Out of respect they were to walk around it and look at it. This was reported by a Canadian broadcaster, and is the version I think we would all prefer.

As none of us were in the dressing room to witness this, lets not jump to conclusions.

:)

Toad,
You can believe that, but somehow i dont. I think that they did that and smiled. *Saying a lot of expletives invovling america* Canada is the first nation of hockey and they way we are creaming *Belarus the under dog, nothing against them but it is 5-1 and they were not expected to get this far* Belarus and we will prob be up against them for gold and we are going all the way again

As far as my flag etiquette memory goes, one does not let a flag touch the ground.

Respect? Hard to believe. They could have focused as easily by hanging our flag on a chair, the wall, somewhere easier-and with more respect- than the floor.

Debbie, that is exactly it.A flag is not supposed to touch the ground. This is why you see when they are raising a flag people holding on to it until they are certain it will touch the ground. If this happens to a flag it is supposed to be destroyed.Last night apparently an American official did confirm that there was a Canadian flag on the floor and now have since denied this seeing the uproar it is causing.Perhaps they should apologize for what they did.

It was a very emotional game for both teams obviously. I am with Toad on this one. The game was won, the Canadians got gold, time to move on and cheer on the guys.

Was the flag on the floor a bad idea? Absolutely. I choose to believe it was just poor judgement. The Canadian team played a great game and deserved the gold. All in all a very entertaining game ( ok, ok frustrating at times with the odd penalty calls)

Here's to another Canadian Gold Medal on Sunday afternoon.

Well I look at all the previous games leading up to the Olympics as this Canada was just lulling the Americans into a trap so to speak you know like letting them win 8 straight so the Americans would take us lightly then we ust uped our game to the next level like we are capable of playing and we spanked the yanks I loved it it was great now tomorrow we are going to do the same to their mens team GO CANADA GO

To clear up some of the misunderstanding about Canadian flag etiquette. The bit about burning the flag if it touches the ground is American. You will see Canadian flags touch the ground. Watch a military parade sometime when the anthem or a royal salute is played. The colour party salutes by lowering their flags to the ground as a sign of respect and "submission" to the higher authority.

Canada has a much more common sense approach, to flag etiquette if it its on the ground, pick it up, If its dirty clean it, if it is worn or faded dispose of it in a dignified manner by privately burning it. For more info see http://www.pch.gc.ca/ceremonial-symb/Etiquette/flag_e.htm. Remember, the flag is a symbol of the country and not the country. Be proud of the flag, not fanatical about it.

Now about the locker room incident, I grant that the American team showed poor judgement in putting our flag on the floor (I have to believe that they didn't walk on it) but they showed even poorer judgement in letting the Canadian team know about it. I bet that helped them whoop their asses!!!

I'm with John. Let's quit crying. We're getting a reputation for being a nation of whiners. We used to blame the Russians for the same thing. I didn't see anyone complaining about the nationality of the ref in the men's game. Where was he from?
