women in your 30s or older - clothing question

If you are going to insult me, at least be kind enough to get my name right. It's smitch, not Smith. ;)

So we have one person that thinks the red shirt is 13 year old attire, and one person who thinks it is 40 year old cougar attire. That's pretty hilarious. :rotfl2:

I'm sticking with it being "a well fitting shirt to wear to a Christmas party" attire. :rotfl:

I think I have seen a very similar shirt in Kohl's (not in the juniors area) and Loft at some point in time.

I can't believe this is a 15 page thread (and that I just read all of it). Wear what you like. Wear what looks good on you. Wear logos. Don't wear logos. Who possibly cares? Unless it's against your work dress code.

I'm 26. I wear jeans and tops from American Eagle. Their jeans fit me great. Contrary to popular belief, AE has more than just v-necks and logo Ts. They actually have really cute nicer tops that can be age appropriate no matter what age you are. My favorite stores are actually J. Crew and Madewell but most of the time I just can't afford their clothes unless I find a really good sale. One day.

Man, women can be so horrible toward each other. Judging people's clothes over the internet that they can't even see.

I think some people get the impression that I am walking around with labels plastered all over me. :rotfl:

To set the record straight, I buy my jeans at Aeropostale, and only when they are on clearance (several pair were less than $10). I have purchased exactly one sweater there in my life, and DD has taken it from me this year. I also have two winter coats from there that I absolutely love. I have never set foot in Hollister or A & F, and I have been in AE exactly one time (years ago with my sister who is 11 years younger than me). As I mentioned early on in the thread, I tend to stick with Target and Old Navy/Gap for shirts because they carry an XS in the women's department. I do shop in the junior's department from time to time, but I never buy revealing/too tight/too young looking clothes. I am a very modest dresser, and I dress to my body type and age. It just so happens that some of my clothes come from a different area of the store because they fit better. I shouldn't have to swim in a top that is too big simply because I'm 36. I buy what I like, and I buy what I want. If someone has an issue with what I wear, so be it. That's their problem, not mine.

Stepping off my soapbox now. :goodvibes

Smitch, please don't feel like you have to defend yourself to the DIS boards. You owe no explanation.

The gray tshirt looks a little young imo and the only problem with the jeans is that they are low rise, which I do think is inappropriate after a certain age.

Low rise jeans make your butt look fabulous!! :thumbsup2 THAT'S why we like to wear them, not because we're trying to look like a teenie bopper!

I don't see VS pink as a middle school thing. I think I'd be a little more creeped out that parents are letting their middle schoolers wear it versus a 30 year old.

BINGO!!!!

And for the record, I am almost 50 years old. I don't buy much in AE or Aero, not because of the age thing. Their clothes just don't fit me all that well. But I certainly wouldn't be above buying anything there if I found something I loved and that fit well! (other than yoga pants and cami's - those I have bought there).

Clothes at ANY age should flatter and enhance and make you look 100% better than without clothes, lol.

I strive to find the balance. I want to look hip and fab even at 50 and age-appropriate, but yet not entirely age-appropriate, lol. :thumbsup2

No. You're wrong. You can dress sexy...But only from the stores geared to middle aged women.;)

Sexy when you're a teen/young adult = baring as much skin as possible (or at least they *think* that's sexy)

Sexy when you're over 30 = wearing well-fitting clothes that are tailored to the contours of your body.

I think I dress pretty sexy even though I am also very conservative in my choices - I never show what shouldn't be shown, lol.

You look great! Seriously...I am wondering if some of these people have even walked into a junior's department recently. They have more than just graphic tees and revealing clothing. There is actually some really cute stuff for all ages.

Thats what I was thinking.

I own jeans from AE and Buckle.
I also love White House Black Market.

I cannnot shop at Chicos, Talbots or Loft. My 65 yo mom shops there. Plus their clothes hang on me. Not flattering at all.

I'm 39 and I shop at Dillard's, old navy and khols. While at Dillard's I found the miss me jeans and I love them! I am barely 5 foot tall and they fit great- one of the few pair that doesn't need to be hemmed . I know some of the younger crowds wear them - but I'm at a point in my life that I'm going to buy what fits good and I'm not worried about what others think .

OMG this thread....LOL I'm 42, I shop at Rue 21 and am wearing jeans from Rue right now, they are seriously the BEST fitting jeans at the best prices, I pay $5-10 for each pair that I have and they are amazing. I am wearing a shirt I got at Wet Seal, paid $4 for it, v-neck, very cute and comfy. Tonight when I go "work" at the bar I'll be wearing short shorts, a corset and my cowboy boots, shorts from Rue too....lol I can't shop at the stores that are for adults because not one thing fits my body style, plus I can shop at Rue and buy so many things for $20 and if I go to Macy's I can't even buy a shoe....hahaha OK so that's an exaggeration (the shoe part) but seriously, I'll buy and wear what looks good on me and trust me, if I didn't look good my friends would tell me. lol
Smitch, that red shirt is soooooooooooo CUTE!!!

I don't see VS pink as a middle school thing. I think I'd be a little more creeped out that parents are letting their middle schoolers wear it versus a 30 year old.

In my community Pink is very popular with the middle and high school crowd. I wouldn't buy it for my daughter, but when she got a job she started buying it for herself. She keeps it fairly conservative or dad will go ape.

Here's a hint for everyone saying the sizing fits better in the jr's dept..it's called a tailor. Yes, they do still exist. Anyone familiar with What Not to Wear? Many, many petite, hard to fit women on the show, and never did I see Stacey & Clinton taking them to the Jr's Dept, much less Aero or Abercrombie. If you like the clothing, more power to you, but the whole sizing thing is a cop-out.

I'm 38 & I love Abercrombie! Wear it all the time. I buy all my jeans at Aero. They have short length (I'm short so that's important) and they just fit me right. And it was so hard to find jeans that fit me right! I also buy a lot of shirts from Hollister. But, the majority of my clothing is Ralph Lauren Polo. I would say 50% of what I have is Polo, the rest is a mixture of Abercrombie, Aero, and Hollister, and sometimes I have luck at Target too!

I will say that there are certain articles of clothing that those stores have that I will not wear because I feel they are inappropriate. Cut off shirts, the really short shorts, things like that.

The pictures that you ladies have posted look great to me. I don't see anything wrong with them.

Yea, because that show is the be all, end all of fashion.

Seriously, some of the stuff in the Jr's department looks EXACTLY like stuff that you find anywhere else in the store. Not all of it LOOKS like a teenage would wear it.

And honestly, who really cares? Why is it so important for some people to mock adults who find clothing in the Jr's department or Aero? I mean, really? What gives?

I still wear graphic tshirts all the time. If I wear them out, I make sure they fit well, wear them with a nice pair of jeans, boots or heels, and a blazer or sweater over them. If someone wants to think something negative about it, go for it. I feel confident and comfortable with myself and my style.

Oooooor wear clothes that fit you and look nice right off the rack! Novel idea! Tailors can be a lot of hassle (and add a lot more expense to an item) and there's no reason to deal with it if you can find clothes that fit you anyway.

A cop out??? :confused3 Why would I pay a tailor to fix clothes that don't fit me when I can just buy clothes that already fit? That's just a waste of money, IMHO. Stacey and Clinton also give those people THOUSANDS of dollars for clothes. They shop at pricey stores, and get next to nothing with that money because everything is so high. I am a SAHM. Tailored clothes are not something I would ever consider. I easily find clothes that fit. I just don't see how it's a cop out at all to shop where you like, and where you find well fitting clothes. Store names and labels don't matter to me one bit. I call that smart shopping, not a cop out.

I couldn't really give a rip what anyone else wears. I don't wear stuff from the jr dept anymore. I will say my dd20 barely buys from AE and never from Aero or AF, and has made the switch from Pink to mostly VS. Pink is mostly middle school and early high school around here. She does shop jrs in department stores though.

I just skimmed this thread, but from what I read I surmised that at 43 years of age I'm supposed to be shopping at Chico's and Coldwater Creek with the social security crowd. No thanks, I'll pass.

I'm also not cutting my hair above the shoulders either. LOL.

Love the hair part!!!! I love my hair and it will stay long no matter how "old" I get. I never understood why women chop it all off at a certain age. My mother and grandmother never did more than trim theirs.

And there's no mocking the other way? It has been said that if you don't shop in juniors you wear moo moos, dress like a little old lady, are part of the "social security" crowd.

From a male perspective:

Cute girl wears cute junior top. Older ladies who aren't in shape to pull it off are jealous and take 16 pages to put her down.

Some women grow older but they're still the catty junior high bratty girls.
