I had two dear friends turn 40 during the same year. For the first friend's birthday, the second friend gave her a CD by "UB40". When the second birthday came around, the first friend gave friend #2 a CD by "U2".
Stick to just Happy Birthday and if her DH doesn't want to sleep with the dog I'd suggest to him to do the same. lol

An extra big no in this case. Dh is younger than me and it doesn't usually bother me. However, sometimes when I hit the milestones - like 40- it feels like I'm a lot older because we're in different decades. He'll finally hit 40 this year and we'll be in the same decade for 6 more years. Yeah!
Speaking from experience. DO make it a big special celebration. DON'T say anything about 'Over the Hill' no matter who thinks it's funny.
We have a saying around here: 30 be funny... 40 be kind... 50 be gentle. These are milestone days people remember for the rest of thier lives.
On my 40th, my DH threw at HUGE surprise bash for me... I think everyone I ever knew was there! It made a day I had been dreading into one of the happiest days of my life.
