Woman rescued after fall from cruise ship
March 5, 2002
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- A female crew member of a cruise ship was being treated for dehydration Tuesday after falling overboard and treading water for 10 hours, said a spokeswoman for the ship's owner, Norwegian Cruise Lines.
The 24-year-old Romanian woman was listed in stable condition after her rescue just east of the Turks and Caicos islands, officials said.
The woman was discovered missing around 12:30 a.m. ET, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Petty Officer Anastasia Burns, after she "failed to show up for a late roll call" aboard the cruise ship Norway.
There were no details as to how the woman fell off the ship.
Burns said the ship's crew alerted the Coast Guard, which began a search operation with two HH-60-J Hawk helicopters and two C-130 airplanes.
Norway crew members spotted the woman at 10:30 a.m., Burns said. She was treading water in 2-3 foot seas. A smaller boat was dispatched from the ship to rescue the woman.
Susan Robison, a spokeswoman for Norwegian Cruise Lines, said the woman was doing fine.
"She's resting comfortably in the ship hospital," Robison said.
The cruise ship was in the middle of a trip from Miami to St. Martin in the Caribbean.
