Woman Dies After Phoenix Airport Arrest

Sep 30 03:25 PM US/Eastern
By BOB CHRISTIE
Associated Press Writer
PHOENIX (AP) - A woman late to her plane became irate, was put in handcuffs and was later found dead in a holding cell, police said. Authorities were investigating Saturday if the woman choked herself while trying to get free from the handcuffs.
Carol Ann Gotbaum, 45, of New York, was arrested Friday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after a conflict with gate crews who refused to allow her to board a plane, said Sgt. Andy Hill, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The airline said the plane was already preparing to depart. She was rebooked on the next flight, but "she became extremely irate, apparently running up and down the gate area," US Airways spokesman Derek Hanna said Saturday.

Officers handcuffed her and took her to the holding room, where she kept screaming, authorities said. Hill said officers checked on her when she stopped screaming and found her unresponsive.

Hill said it appears Gotbaum may have tried to get out of her handcuffs, became tangled in the process and the cuffs ended up around her neck. A cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County Medical Examiner.

"She was very agitated and irate and angry," Hill said. "These are the things that led to the disorderly conduct arrest."

Authorities said neither a Taser nor pepper spray was used on the woman.

When I hear about people behaving in odd or extreme ways I often wonder if they aren't in the process of having some sort of medical emergency.

I would bet drugs are involved. Sounds like she could have been high on amphetamines.

I could have hung myself on Tuesday. I was trying to get from Frankfurt to Detroit. NWA cancelled the flight, so I got another night in paradise (Germany).

The Wednesday experience was miserable. I felt like I was in a line all day long for a new WDW ride. What was my compensation for all of this??? A book of tickets for 10 free drinks on this or upcoming flights. Hello...drinks on international flights are already free. What a bargain!!!

If they cuffed her arms behind her and she was trying to get her arms over her head, maybe? I dunno. That is really weird.

I don't think arms and shoulders articulate that way. It definately is weird. One does worry about some kind of medical event beyond drugs; Her picture is that of someone who looks fairly well "put together". It is odd behavior indeed. Running up and down the gateway certainly entitles her to being arrested but it is odd that she could die in such a short time. :confused3

I was thinking of you! ;)

FWIW, I'm sorry she passed away, but I think if you make a disturbance that might endanger yourself or others, you deserve to be restrained and detained.

The person that died is a relative of a political figure in NYC. I forget exactly what the position is of the relative who is in office.

Carol Ann Gotbaum, is the daughter-in-law of NY's Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum.

It would be a strange twist if they found out some employee got so annoyed with her irate behavior that he actually strangled her. Anyone who has ever worked in customer Service will know what I mean. ;)

Under EU rules you should be entitled to alot more than that!

Back OT what a bizarre sequence of events.

I agree, particularly in an airport. Even if she presented no direct threat, her behavior is a distraction which could distract from a real threat. I think it is sad.

However strange, very tragic indeed. My heart and prayers go out to her family and friends. :sad1:
