My 6-year old granddaughter's family is heading for their first ever Disneyworld visit May 29. DGD has spina bifida, and is in a wheelchair. ANy Wilderness Lodge tips that would help? As far as I know, they did not request an accessible room, as she does not really need it at her age.

Tips on navigating WL, or the boats and transportation there?

Hi there,

Our 11 year old son uses a wheelchair and we love Wilderness Lodge. We do not need an accessible room (he is still little enough for us to lift him in and out of the bath etc). The boats that take you directly to the Magic Kingdom are accessible - we just roll on into the boat. Actually, ease of transportation is one of the things we love about Wilderness Lodge - the boats very frequent (I do not think we ever waited more than 15 minutes) and the chair does not have to be tied down (unlike the busses). Sometimes we weill even take the boat to the Magic Kingdom and then take the momorail to Epcot (a roundabout way but my little guy prefers this to the bus - he takes a bus every day to school - so a boat and monorail is much more fun). Other than that, there is a really nice walking trail from Wilderness Lodge to Fort Wilderness that we take our son along of an evening and we have even spotted deer along the way. All in all, your grandaughter will likely have a fantastic time! We will be at Wilderness Lodge in early May this year and cannot wait. Have a great trip!:thumbsup2

this response was sooo much help to me...We are also off to disney in may, and staying at WL, my friend of 10 years has decided to come and celebrate her graduation of University at disney with us, but she also has spina bifida, and i was worried about her comfort or transportation. She is able to walk, but only short distances, and she can not stand for long periods... this information has really helped me in knowing that she can simply walk onto the boat, and not deal with a step...thanks so much..

If you have not already checked it out, look in the disABILITIES FAQs thread for a lot of hints/information. It is stuck near the top of this board or you can use the link in my signature to get there. Post #3 of that thread contains a lot of sort of general hints. Post #8 is about transportation around the world and has pictures of some of the boats and the monorails.
There is an Epcot FAQs thread also with a lot of information. It is not complete - working on this board is an unpaid volunteer 'job' and sometimes my real, paying job ends up too busy - but I am working on it.
