Wk of Oct 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hey all... I mustered out 40 minutes on the treadmill this morning. 5:00 am runs are really hard for me, my legs just don't cooperate! But I did it and that is what counts. Also... I had non-dairy creamer in my coffee this morning instead of the flavored stuff!!!! Whoooo Hoooooo!!

Cam - I am coming to visit the thread when I am finished here!!!! :grouphug:

Thanks for all the "motivational you can do its!!" I tend to think the worst of myself a lot and it always picks me up when I read this thread. I have a 10K race next weekend if the weather holds out and I am petrified. WHY?? Because I don't want to be last. I know I can finish, but I don't want to have the car trailing me picking up the cones. You know what I mean. But I will finish. OK, that is if it doesn't snow. I will not run in snow this early.

Carrie - Speaking of snow.... they are predicting it for tomorrow again... and through the weekend. I may be running the track at the Y on Saturday. 72 laps is going to KILL me!!

OK, I have to run over to Cam's thread.....

Sunny - lol about your poor dd showing up in blue and gold. And thanks for the reminder that weight loss must be slow now. I think the key for me is just to be going in teh right direction again. ;)

Kristi - Forgot to give you an update on my FIL. Thansk for asking! he is doing unbelieveabley well compared to what we thought. However, still have to darn near tie him down so that he does not over do it. If he does, he will be sick for a few days. Generally, he's just kind of slow walking and has a bit of a limp. After teh marathon, we'll pobably be walking pretty similar. ;)

Jen - WTG on the TM! I can't do mornings. If I were able to get up at 3:30 so I could eat and go out (by mylself, as dh would need to start at 3:30 to be to work on time) at 4:30 so I could get ready for work on time, I sitll could nto do it. My body just does nto function that early. So, I feel your pain! I have no indoor track and no TM. So, not runnign in teh snw is not an option for me. DH adn I wanted to snag our glacier boot that fit over our shoes from our seld dog experience. That would have done nicely for snow.

OK, starting to wonder how many times I can post here in one day.

This one's important, though. Craig posted a link to an article on teh events board and it does not look like many have read it. EVryone needs to read this entire article. You may think it does not aply at the beginning, but it does! Please read it!

Hello. My name is Heather and my sister and I (along with DH this year) are registered for the 2007 WDW Half Marathon. We did the 2006 1/2 Marathon and had a wonderful time. Not only was it our first ever (and we finished and got a medal) it was a huge accomplishment for both of us. We participated as part of the Joints In Motion team - she has severe arthritis in her right ankle due to a bad car accident, and I have asthma and fibromyalgia (which is a form of arthritis) - and working together, we finished. We both cried as we passed the choir at EPCOT. We can't wait to do this again and I have convinced dh to join and make a committment about his health in the process. While we have decided to do this one "on our own", meaning we will not be raising money for any charity this year, we miss the team spirit and friendship that comes with being part of a group of people with a common goal.

I just found this board this morning and am impressed with the support and friendship to be found here. I was hoping you might have room for one more (and probably my sister/twin when I tell her about this.)

Thanks, and best wishes for everyone to succeed at WDW.

Heather

Heather - We always have room for one more!!!! Welcome!!! We can alwys gleen something frm someone else's story. You and your sister sound like you have a pretty amazing story too! Hope we get to hear more!

Thanks! I don't know if we have an amazing story, just lots of determination. My sister was the one who wanted to do the marathon last January and had to convince me that we could do it. Our parents met us and my father (who was a professional photographer in his day) took our picture as we crossed the finish line. It really was a defining moment for both of us. If we could do that, than we could accomplish whatever we wanted in our lives. We just have to stay focused! We felt so great about completing it last year that we wanted to do it again. We'll see if we can make it 2 for 2.

My sister is in Grand Rapids, MI - I wonder if you are near there! It's a small world, after all...

I look forward to building many friendships here over the coming months.

Very small world. WIthin comuting distance of GR. So are Solotraveler and Bekah!

Hello Team:

I'm in the Atlanta airport waiting for my flight back home to Rochester, NY. I got my run in yesterday. I did 6 miles at around a 10-11 mpm pace. It was a really tough run. There were the hills that I've discovered here in Atlanta. Plus, it was cold, windy and drizzly, and finally my legs were absolutely dead. Standing on my feet all day on the concrete floors of the convention center just made my legs exhausted. I would definitely call it a "stonker" run, but I got out there and did it. I must admit that my last 2 runs have not been great. However, I'm thinking there's lots of reasons for that, and it does not necessarily mean my 1/2 marathon this weekend will not go well. I'm just taking it one day at a time. Today's a travel/rest day, and I'll get out and run again tomorrow.

Carrie- Thanks for posting that story from the Denver Post. That was a great article, and really reminded me why I was out there running.

Heather- :welcome: It's always great to have someone else on the team. This group has been so supportive. I've always been constantly amazed at how much support and motivation I've gotten from a group of people that I've never met. I just started running again this past January after a long layoff (8 years). I had started and stopped sooooo many times, but this team here has kept me going for the longest I've run in years.

Dave - Since you have the 1/2 mar this weekend, it is the big tell your family weekend as well? If so, can't wait for the reports on both the race and the revelation!!

Hello everyone. Today is a xt day for me, so I just did 30 min on the TM and 12 on the bike. :goodvibes

I have a question. (When don't I??) What do you guys do immediatly after the race is over (At WDW)? Get your medal, stretch, go back to the resort, take an ice bath, eat, sleep.....I'm wondering what I should be doing after I get done crying.

Bill - Thank you for your kind wishes. :goodvibes I am waiting on my third pair of "free" sport running shoes as we speak. Thanks you so much for asking about Mist. She actually had a bit of an accident and had to have her head x-rayed this morning. We think (We have to figure it out from the clues, as she won't tell us) she reared up in her stall and fell backwards and hit her head - right behind her ears - on the ledge. The x-rays showed nothing broken or fractured and neurologic tests did not indicate any brain issues, so she's on pain meds for what is probably a terrific headache. Poor thing! Other than that she is doing very well. The trial has started up again with a new judge, so hopefully in the next two months we will have an answer. Thank you again for asking.

Sunny - You're right about weight loss during training. I am not going to attempt any huge losses, but man, I need to get my eating under control.

Cam - My life is full of naysayers too. Or..the other extreme, which I think is just as bad. Everytime I hear "Oh, 13 miles? I could do that." or "It's only a HALF marathon!" I could scream!! But my personal favorite is..."You? You're not RUNNING it are you?" As if what? I'm too fat? Hu?? Is that what you mean, wench???!?!? ARRRGGHHH! :furious: I get so mad when someone says that!!! OK sorry. I'm ok, really. Thanks for asking, but I'm waiting on the hospital to call me to schedule the MRI. I have no idea why. I'm glad your crazy trial is over. We missed you around here. :goodvibes Ohh thanks for starting the other thread. I'll be over there later.

Carrie - You are so funny! :lmao: Come on! I WANT some Ice Princess lyrics! :rotfl2: Ohhh I LOVE LOVE LOVE that quote! And thank you for the inspirational speech. This is where my being half-Polish and a Taurus helps. I'm damn stubborn! I REFUSE to miss a day of training! REFUSE! Not now. Uh hu. Ain't happening. I don't care what happens. I waited a year to start MfM training. Now that its here, NOTHING is getting in my way. I CAN DO THIS AND I WILL!!! :thumbsup2

Heather - :welcome: :disrocks:

Ooh, reminiscing!!! I need to do something til my packet comes, so.......

Last year after I finished the race, I think the order is: cross finish line; get chip cut off shoe; get mylar sheet thingy; get medal; have picture taken (SMILE!); get food/beverages from the food/beverage tent; then headed over to the "W" sign to stretch. I saw Sunny, but failed to introduce myself in time before she left. :guilty: I hung around for a while to see if I saw anyone else, then hit the buses back to the Yacht Club. (The people on the bus trip back were awesome!!)

Anyhow, back to the room, took the best shower of my life; ordered some takeout from Beaches and Cream and then had a glass of champange on my balcony. :cloud9: (Oh man, I just got the race bug again... I had fought it for SO LONG!!!)

Carrie-- I was wondernig if you'd catch that UM/MSU thing. :) Talk about being one way or another and never the twain shall meet. (I'm a Michigan guy myself.) Good job on y'alls 10 miler as well. Now, if only it would stop raining........................ :umbrella:

Jen-- At least I'm not the only one possibly running in the snow this weekend. :teeth: I tell you, a 5K in 30 degree temps and "Wintry Mix" will NOT make me a happy camper. No turning back now, I guess. I'm sure you'll do great. :thumbsup2

Heather-- Welcome!! The more the merrier!! Congrats on last year's race!! And this:

It really was a defining moment for both of us. If we could do that, than we could accomplish whatever we wanted in our lives.

I completely understand. Same thing happened to me after the full last year. Like Carrie said, I'm right near Grand Rapids, too!

I'm right there with you guys looking to drop a few pounds before the race.. I would love to drop another 10-15lbs before then. Might have to join you all on the other thread.... unless it's a "No Boys Allowed" sorta thing. :teeth:

Well, it's Homecoming weekend around these parts, so I apoligize if I can't keep up like usual this week. Three volleyball games + plus one banquet + plus on road race + Friday's 14-miler + classes + a huge mailing + one HUGE football game = :faint: <----- Kev :rotfl:

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Judy - those reverse nay-sayers crack me up. One of my favorite is a guy who kindof' chuckled at me the 1st time i signed up for a tri. He told me how fast he could swim and ride. Anyway, he also happens to come in contact w/ phil and when we were training for that x-terra this summer, he really started blowing!! He was bragging about how good he was going to do... Phil is not competitive, but he did say his only goal was to beat that guy. The funny thing is, when we got to the race that morning, mr. "i can do that" was nowhere to be seen. He was a DNS in a big way. I looked at phil right b/4 the swim (in fact we were both already wearing our sexy green swim caps) and I said "you achieved your goal!!" You beat him already. I'm smiling just thinking about it now. :teeth:

Heather - :welcome: My mom did her first 1/2 at WDW last year & she also suffers from fibromyalgia. Small world!

Today is my scheduled rest day - so I am right on plan! :lmao:

I need to go take advantage of being, *cough cough,* sick. ;) I have some serious organizing to do around here with the new shelving we just bought at Sam's Club!

Yikes Kevin - Good luck this weekend! How'd you get to be a UM fan? :confused3 If you had to pick, you did the right thing, but not like you're from around here. Then again, you likely spent a lot of time dealing with the Big House a couple years ago. BTW - The weight loss thread is not "No Boys Allowed."

Post Race - What not to do:

We started out ok. Cross line, have chip removed (Scott had a porblem with this and could not figure out why someone was trying to push him down), get medal, get ice for knee (fall at mile 4), get water,. powerade and some fruit, find family.

After this, things got bad. Took pics, not stretching, go t on bus to see family off. Got off bus, said goodbye, realized we wanted I Did It shirts. Quick change, wait for bus. SAt forever and got on MK bus, as we were tired of witing for EPCOT. Took MOnorail to Epcot. This was about an hour of stitting now. Hobble off monorail to finish area. Long wayyyyyyy....

See final finisher cross and hope they are not closed when we get there. Not closed, but did not have those shirts left. :( Back on bus and crash on bed fo a couple hours. great pain and inability to move when we got up. WIll not repeat this year. This year, will stretch and either do some pool time or cold tub and get back in the game and keep moving. Oh, want to get massage in there too. Need to be thinking about appointment fo rthat.....

Now, because Judy, queen of comedy asked for this....

Artist: Caleigh Peters Lyrics
Song: Reach
Sometimes it seems like you’re falling
Falling out of the sky
Sometimes it feels like you’re slipping
And running out of time
And that’s when you’ve gotta throw it all away
All of the things that people say
And all of the doubts that fill your mind
Don’t belong there

Whatever you do, you’ll never be wrong
As long as you reach for it
When you reach for it, nothings to far
And its never to long, as long as you reach for it
You can dream on it, everywhere its there

Sometimes I can be stupid
I can get out of line
But most times you know what I’m doing
Its not like some big surprise
Oh and I, I just want to make you understand
That failing on me isn’t in my plans
And all of the doubts that fill my mind
don’t belong there. stlyrics

Whatever you do, you’ll never be wrong
As long as you reach for it
When you reach for it, nothings to far
And its never to long, as long as you reach for it
You can dream on it, everywhere

There’s so much distance
Between what you want and what you’ve got
But if you really want it-its your life
So you gotta try
You’ve gotta fly

Whatever you do, you’ll never be wrong
You can reach for it
You can reach for it

Its never to far and its never to long
As long as you reach for it. stlyrics
You can dream on it, everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere

Reminiscing is fun, and it really does re-motivate, doesn't it?
We got chips cut off, draped in mylar blanket, draped in medal, paused for pix, picked up my bag at the package pick-up tent, stopped at the W tent looking for other WISHers, then headed back to the Beach Club Villas. The bus driver was AWESOME!!! Every time he saw ANY marathon participants walking along (obvious by clothing or limping or medal), he pulled over and picked them up -- he absolutely INSISTED that anyone who had done the 1/2 that day deserved a ride. He picked them up regardless of where they were going and radioed to dispatch that he was going to make a couple of extra stops after his regular stops. :lovestruc

When we got back to BCV, we ran cold water in the jacuzzi and the phone rang and it was Melissa (MelR) calling to say hello and to congratulate us on our finish! It was so absolutely amazing to talk with her. I was so grateful and flattered that she tracked us down (she is one of my heroes and just having her congratulate me made the achievement even "bigger") How exciting! Then we got showered and dressed and headed to EPCOT for desperately needed food. We wore our race shirts and our green WISH scarves and our medals (and I wore my sweatshirt) Started what will be a tradition of eating fish & chips in Great Britain, then over to France for a glass of champagne (a la Lily!), then relaxed in WS until our dinner reservation at LeCellier.

Kevin, please, please, please join us! We all can use all the insight and support and viewpoints that each of us can contribute. We have quite a crew over there already and we are talking all about healthy eating!

A man has already joined so you won't be alone ;) And thus, have no excuse not to join :p

DH ran in the AM, He goes at 6:00 am, I could never make it then.
I headed to the gym this afternoon and following MFM ran/walked 3/2 for 40 minutes. Always hit a wall at about 20-25 minutes. I push through and seem to do fine. Tomorrow I work out with a personal trainer. I have 2 sessions left, then I am on my own. (I needed a big push!)

"Cam - My life is full of naysayers too. Or..the other extreme, which I think is just as bad. Everytime I hear "Oh, 13 miles? I could do that." or "It's only a HALF marathon!" I could scream!! Mostly people are so great, so encouranging, but don't ya hate when they say, Oh yeah I could do that!!!!! DH says under his breath everytime "you couldn't do it for 2 1/2 freaking hours!" :rotfl2:

What is the Mylar Sheet thingy? Is it a blanket? See, I am a new runner!!! Any Pics?

What is the W tent? Winners? Wishers? Do we have our own tent?!?

I love the post race stories. Now I am off to the marathon site to check out the race gear!

I might even check in onthe weight loss thread!

Thanks everyone!!
Nancy
