Wk of Nov 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Greetings TEAM:

OK, drive-by post here... I did nothing today, rest and recovery day, and hang out with grandparents/in-laws. Yesterday, I squeezed my 8 mile LR in before all the other activities. It was a good run, the new shoes felt OK, I think I need a couple of runs for my feet to get used to them. My Garmin had me at 8.02 miles/1:20.13 for a 10:00 mpm pace flat. Here are my splits.

Mile 1: 8:21 min :confused3; didn't seem like I was going that fast. Must be the shoes.
Mile 2: 9:52 min - I was consciously telling myself to slow down.
Mile 3: 10:04 min
Mile 4: 9:30 min
Mile 5: 11:59 min - ate a GU, behind my left knee was really bothering me. Walked some
Mile 6: 10:25 min
Mile 7: 10:19 min - now I'm feeling more comfortable
Mile 8: 9:32 min - picked it up the last mile.

OK, that's all for now. Gotta go mourn another Steeler loss.

Thank you for the support on my 12 miler!

I am still trying to decide if it was a good run.

First, I found this thing that told me that if it was over 50 degrees to wear shorts and a singlet. WRONG! It was 54 and I was cold!!

Then we were on one of those rails to trails where loads of people are running, rollerblading, and biking. Heck, my kids were out there annoying the speedy bike riders as well. So about mile two I slow down to drink some powerade and this little kid runs into me and I spill powerade all over me. I was already cold but now I am wet, sticky and cold.

At mile four, I come across a hose and decide that I can not tolerate the stickiness any more and hose myself off. Neck down, I am dripping wet. I try to wring out the clothes as much as I can but I take off down the trail with my shorts dripping into my socks. Lovely.

So some sadist has marked the miles at .9,then 1.9,2.9,3.9,4.9 but decided not to bother marking anything after that. So I meet up with one of those decked out bike riders that had a odometer on his bike and asked him what the mileage was. 6.3!! Wonderful.

The run back was uneventful. Which means I had 6.3 miles to think of nothing but how cold and wet I was. My lovely husband had my change of clothes waiting for me when I got back to mile 0. Soft, warm dry sweat clothes.

However, my time for the entire run was 1:55. So I ran like 9 minute miles the entire time. How can THAT be a bad run?!

Happy trails everyone!

Just hoping to hear fom Cam and Howard. Been thinking of you. :goodvibes

Okay, I admit…..I didn’t do 13 miles today, I did only 12 miles – I went down to the fitness center at our apartment complex and ran/walked it on the treadmill (I think I’m going to start taking things at a faster pace --- It just didn’t feel like I was doing much running at a 12.00 min/mile….I think my next run I will try and bring it up to 10 min/mile).

Anyhow, I had to stop at 12.00, I couldn’t take it anymore…..Now, when I say this it wasn’t I couldn’t do it physically….I just couldn’t concentrate anymore - - there was this guy on one of the other threadmills was dragging his feet while running, and making this awful sweaky noise :faint: …..I swear all I could think of was this guy reminds me of the hamster you had when you were younger that went around in that exercise wheel and somehow that wheel always made that sweaky noise. So anyhow, after mile 12 I had to get away from hamster man :teeth: .

Jen – Congrats on your 10k – great job!

Steve asked about post race massage: I am getting 80-minute massages after both races (a huge treat for me… even got a third job to save the $$). For me, massage definitely helps recovery. I have info. on WDW massage locations and prices if anyone is interested.
Hi Teri, if you don’t mind - - would I be able to grab that information from you?

Dave – Great pictures of your half – Are you going to buy any of them? I would have bought some of my Hartford Half pictures….but every single picture I have my eyes closed……I’m a blinker - - uhhhh

Sara and Jodi--Happy anniversary!! October must be a popular month to get married, Stephen and I celebrated our 6th anniversary on the 21st and my parents celebrated their 40th yesterday.
Sorry, I missed everyone’s anniversary…..Thank you everyone for your well wished on my day…..

Happy Belated Anniversary – Sara, Krista, and Mel

Happy Anniversary Kristi!

Cam - I have an Allbuterol Inhaler. I take a couple swigs on it before I run and it does help. I still have some issues, but nothing like I was. I hope yours works for you.
I use albuterol too! It really made a difference in my last official run. Glad I asked my allergy doctor about my breathing while running.

Cam/Howard - :grouphug: :grouphug:

Last weekend, my 9 mile LR was such a stonker that I was nervous about my 11 mile LR planned for this Saturday. It turned out to be a GREAT run and I felt so much more confident in my ability to eventually be able to complete the marathon in January.

I actually felt so good that I ended up doing 12 rather than 11 - probably too big of a jump from last weekend but I did it and I felt fine. I ended up doing intervals of .25 mile walking/.25 mile running for the whole 12 miles and it felt nearly perfect for me. I had to restrain myself from running longer at times but I knew that I needed the rest time so I kept to the intervals.

My splits are as follows:

Mile 1 14:13
Mile 2 13:51
Mile 3 11:13 (pretty sure my Garmin skipped about a tenth of a mile here thus the fast time!)
Mile 4 13:28
Mile 5 13:46
Mile 6 14:05
Mile 7 13:31
Mile 8 13:22
Mile 9 13:57
Mile 10 13:37
Mile 11 14:24
Mile 12 13:33

Total time 2:44:23 for 12.08 miles with an overall pace 13:37 mpm

I was thrilled with this as last week's overall pace for 9 miles was 14:39 so this was a huge improvement. I felt a bit sore last night but felt great today with only tiny twinges now and then in my legs. BTW, my kayanos were fabulous!

Unfortunately, DS is sick with a cold and so no gym for me for a couple of days but will get back to training as soon as possible.

I am so jealous that Carrie got to travel and train with Heather this weekend - I would love a running partner (even just occasionally) especially for those long runs.

Jodi - I meant to tell you how jealous I was that you got to spend your anniversary in Salem, MA. My husband and I fell in love there (on a business trip of all things) and even gave our daughter the middle name of Salem. I can't wait until she is a bit older so we can take her on a trip to visit!

Kristi & Jen - Congratulations on doing so well in your races! The pictures were fun too - thank you for sharing them!

Cecilia - I am so impressed with your strong run in spite of gatorade, cold temps, and wet clothes! What a great pace - you should be so proud of yourself. I hope you are feeling much better about your training this week!

*********Illuminations Dessert Party Update************

I will be sending out PMs this week so that I can send invoices. I need to make the final payment by the end of the month. I'll be consulting the list from the "official" thread I started as well as from PMs I received. So be looking for a PM this week!

Rhonda - awesome job on your 12 miles! :woohoo:

Jodi - I know what you mean about people around you making weird noises. During that race yesterday, there was a guy behind me near the end, hocking lugies (?). GROSS!!!

And I have to get back to Salem sometime! I live close enough. I guess it's one of those things where you don't go to local attractions often or ever, since you do live close by.

Not to dwell on my little 5k yesterday, but...

- my second toes are hurting today. Weird since they usually only bother me until I do 8 miles or so. My new shoes came on Friday, but I didn't want to wear brand new shoes for a race. As we were standing waiting for the start, my feet just plain hurt. I kept thinking as I walked from the garage to work this morning - I hope no one tries to attack me, I can't run today! :rotfl2:
(I know being attacked would be anything but funny. You just have to make light of these things when you walk into work at 4am in downtown Boston)

- I am SO dependent on my Garmin! When it died after 1.68 miles, I was lost. I didn't know when to run, when to walk. Knowing that my first mile was 11:23, and that I ended up with a 12:22 average, I definately slowed down. Alot. I think I would have had a better time, had I had a watch to tell me when to run. I don't think I am a good judge of when my body feels rested enough by walking, to run.

I have a confession to make. Last week I did NOTHING. Well, nothing in the way of training. I was totally busy with "real life" I did do my 8 miles yesterday. So I was happy I got that in. Considering I had done nothing for a week it felt pretty good & went well. I have also lost my motivation/will to train. Help me get it back guys!! I think I'm just getting so overwhelmed with getting everything else done & taken care of that I can only concentrate on so many things and I have nothing left for training. I am very excited for the trip & cant wait to see you guys. I just need to get my groove back.

Cam & Howard-I hope you guys are doing o.k. Your family is in my thoughts & prayers :grouphug:

Kristi & Jen-all of our local races are for speedy runners too. Great job on your races! :thumbsup2

Rhonda-great job on your 12 miler!!!! :cool1:

Cecelia-Good for you for not quiting. I think all of that would have gotten on my nerves so much I would have thrown in the towel!

Jodi-Dont worry about it. At your level of fitness, 1 mile isn't going to hurt you. Good job for doing 12 on that stupid treadmil :woohoo:

Bill-Awesome job on your 20 miler. You take good care of your wife now!!!!!

Teri-2 miles is about my limit on the treadmill. Luckily I live where I dont need to use it too often.

Dave-when are you telling DW? We can't wait to hear about it.

Have a great week everyone!

Ok, you asked for it!
:cool1: <- this is me kicking your butt into gear! :rotfl:

Another week, another race report!

As you know I'd taken it easy during the week hoping shin splints would heal. Well my right leg feels great now, but sadly I think I reaggravated the left while running barefoot on the treadmill for that foot clinic for like 30 seconds, so I was still having some pain in my left going into the race. Wrapped it up, threw on the new Kayanos, and got ready for the Mobile, AL (bout 80 mile drive for us) Senior Bowl Charity Run 10k. (DW took this race off, she was really sore this week and hadn't had a step back week in forever had done 3 10ks in 4 weeks!)

Took a couple miles to warm up it seemed like, but as it turned out the reason I was tired was I was nearly on my best 5k pace for the first three miles, I think I was confused or the new shoes were nice and bouncy. :Pinkbounc

So my previous best was a 53:32 for a 8:38mpm avg at the RftT, which was down from 55:59 for a Labor Day 10k. Well yesterday I ran some really even splits which I was quite proud of...

Miles: 8:02, 8:25, 8:31, 8:34, 8:35, 8:29, 1:29
Total: 52:05 PR!!! 8:24mpm avg!!!

I should mention it was an extremely flat and fast course, and weather was pretty perfect. Up next is either a 4.5mile race over a bridge or a 4mile run through a gigantic military cemetary, we haven't decided which yet for this Saturday. Then the next weekend I'm going to do a little half marathon race near here, and just treat it as a training run where I don't have to haul all my own stuff. Going to try to get back into the mileage this week, and am hoping my legs will respond. Since the race this week is shorter going to try to do a long run mid week for 8-10 miles, and see how it goes.

Good Morning Everyone-

Boy are my legs achey this morning! Not sore or hurting, just a mild achiness that doesn't go away. I am trying not to complain anymore since I think everyone around me is sick of hearing about my running or my tired legs etc etc.

Alright Tiff - You gotta get it in gear and make your training a priority!!!!Believe me with 3 kids its easy to think of a dozen reasons why I can't fit a run in here or there. I have been known to drop kids off at softball practice and take off running from the practice field only to return as practice is finishing up. All the other moms have spent the last hour and a half sitting on the bleachers. Find the time, you are worth it too.

Kristi - I know what you mean about the Garmin, I was mentally cussing so much of my run yesterday because if I had had a garmin I wouldn't have run too far.... My teammates all have Garmins so most tof my runs I only have ask to know all sorts of details. Between that and running on a treadmill, I am used to having loads of data immediately so it was weird to be out there running with nothing yesterday but it was also sort of free just to run.
oh yeah - speed runs always cause me to have strange pains the next day. Those toes are probably just a result of the 5k.

Matt- Wow you are doing a lot of races! And you are getting quite speedy too. :cheer2: Congrats on your new PR! :cheer2:

Jodi - I completely get the hamster guy. Those last few miles on a treadmill are hard enough without THAT kind of noise to send you over the edge. Good job on your 12! That is a long time on a treadmill, I don't know how you did it. I need pointers as I have a 16 mile run coming up at thanksgiving that I am going to have to do on a treadmill.

Rhonda - 12 miles running and walking !!! wow. I know I would have started walking and completely spaced out and forgotten to run. I think that takes more mental power than just running! Alright, I have heard the rumors about a party at illuminations ( I thought that was a fireworks show?) and I would love to get the details. I am just now getting the details of my trip from TNT so I can finally figure out what I am doing.

Happy Trails!

Dana – Great race report. Congrats to you!! :cheer2:

Mel – Wonderful job on the LR. :woohoo: The mental thing sure makes a world of difference.

Teri – Way to get through a challenging 12 miles. :cool1: You’re sure to be stronger for it next time out of the gate. Thanks for the virtual visual of WDW during the run.

CJ – I wouldn’t worry about getting in the rest of the miles. I hope you and your DD are both alright. It is so sweet that she wanted to join you.

Jen – Great pics from the 10K!! You look awesome. :cheer2: Congrats on the weight loss. It is always reassuring when you can see it in photos.

Nancy – Date runs sound like a lot of fun. I will have to try to convince DH that we should do one in lieu of date night sometime.

Kristi – Congrats to you and Chad on the 5K. :cool1: Great time. :woohoo: Sorry the Garmin died on you. I love the pictures. Apple pie sounds yummy for the Thanksgiving race.

Heather – Glad you and Terri had a wonderful LR. Great saying on the shirt – oh so true.

Carrie – :rotfl2: about the gallon jug of Powerade. That’s dedication for sure. Yeah, it’s pretty darn cold up in NY, so could you pick me up some extravagant earmuffs? :confused3

Bill – WTG on the 20 miler!! :cool1: It’s great that you saw improvement over last year’s time. I see a new marathon PR in your sights. :woohoo: Take good care of Lynnda. :wizard: :wizard:

Dave – Great LR. Congrats on the weight loss also. :woohoo: I hope the knee’s feeling alright today. :wizard: Loved your ½ marathon pics.

Cecilia – Awesome time on the LR, however, honestly I am more impressed that you endured through being cold, wet AND sticky throughout!!

Rhonda – Congrats to you on the stellar LR. :cheer2: Nothing like a great one to give you a boost in confidence. :rotfl: about the Salem, MA story!!

TiffJ – BTDT!! :confused3 I hope the lack of motivation passes quickly for you. :wizard: Glad you did get a good LR in this weekend. Not much longer to go, so I hope you’re able to prioritize and get some steps in. It’s never easy around the holidays. :grouphug:

Matt – Congrats on the PR!!  Especially with the nagging shin splints. Best of luck on your upcoming race.

Cam - :grouphug: Thinking of you guys.

7 miles this morning on the treadmill which felt really good. I am gearing up for 17 miles on Saturday. So happy to have received my packet after my LR on Saturday. It definitely gives you a little lift as the miles increase.

Best of luck to all with training this week!!

ok, i'm going to jump in here again. i'm always amazed at how far this weekly thread goes! monday and on page 3 already!

i asked this once and then couldn't find my post -- can i use the Donald '07 clippie? i just love that clippie? who made those??

i'm on the MFM schedule for the 1/2. my Mom is training too but isn't sure if she'll be able to complete the distance with a hip/lower back injury earlier this year. is anyone else walking the 1/2 about a 14:30 min mile?? i may need a friend!

:guilty: Well it's official...I called reservations today and switched my Jan.07 room ressie to Jan.08, so I won't be visiting WDW in 2007. Wah! So sad......but hey, I'll be there in Jan.08! :yay: Who's coming with me?

Angie – Great race report! You had me in tears by the end. I am so proud of you! Congratulations on getting yourself to the START and congratulations on the FINISH!!! That is a huge accomplishment! I am sure your family is so proud of you, and so is your WISH family! :dancer:

So glad to hear about everyone who is making time to get out there and put in the steps. I know it is so hard to carve out the time, especially if you have little ones, or even big ones that need to be driven here or there or need our attention for anything.

Well, we drove out to the Pittsburgh area Friday night, having received a call from my DMIL saying the hospice nurse said to call the family together, that it could be hours. My DFIL was non-responsive and mostly asleep or unconscious. The hospice charge nurse later told us they think he had a mini-stroke Friday. We arrived around 3:30 a.m. and by the time we saw DFIL Saturday morning he was lucid and talking and we were even able to get him some food he wanted – a strawberry sundae and parts of a quarter pounder and some McD’s french fries. He even ate some dinner. We had some very tearful, heart-wrenching good-byes Saturday night and drove home at 6:30 a.m. yesterday to get DS13 back for a singing performance at his school and a commitment Howard had. So, my DFIL is still holding on but it is hard knowing how much pain he is in. Still, I am so glad Howard (and the rest of us) had some quality time with him. He thanked us again for some of the best times of his life – when we took him to Disneyworld and when we took them to Disney’s Hilton Head resort and he and Howard got to golf together on both trips.

So, thank you so much for the hugs and the prayers and the pixiedust. I think your good wishes and prayers bought us another visit with Dave.

Not much to report here on the training front. I got new shoes on Friday – Asics 2120 – that I thought would be great, but I was cautious enough that I tested them on the treadmill yesterday. By mile 5 I had a painful blister in my right arch, so something is obviously not fitting right. I am disappointed because I had hoped I’d found the perfect shoe. Now, after 3 attempts, I am back to the start and still looking for the perfect shoe. The good news is that I did 8.58 miles on the TM yesterday in 2 hours (overall pace 13:59). I did several intervals of jogging for 4 minutes at a time which is still absolutely remarkable to me. I really wanted to go a bit further, but the blister was pretty painful and I was in desperate need of more sport beans or cliff blocks and didn't have any more, so I figured I should wrap it up before I hurt myself. ;) I’m not sure how much I can squeeze in this week, but really hope to do 16 miles next weekend.

Jen and Kristi – great pix! You guys both look awesome! :thumbsup2

Heather and Carrie – so glad you guys got to run together, but I’m jealous, too. Great job!

Bill – great job on your 20 miler!

Rhonda – I am so glad for you that you had such an awesome 12 miler! You rock, girl!

Tiff – Get your butt in gear, chickie! :teeth: Actually, I am incredibly impressed that you can just pull off an 8 miler without having had time to do much else. That is great. Hey, I think we’ll need to set a time to do Space Mountain together in WDW and get another picture to go with DL – we can always draw Andy’s face in later! :rotfl:

Matt – congrats on your PR!!

Well, I did it. I got up this morning and did 45 minutes on the treadmill. It was supposed to be 50, but I was running out of time and wanted to get some stretching in. Since I was the laziest runner last week, it felt good to pull my body out of bed this morning and get some steps in. It was a hard run for me, early mornings always are. But a stonker is better than nothing!!! I stayed with a R5, but did W2 instead of my regular W1.

Tiff - My personal life was crazy last week also. I just didn't have time or energy to train. So when I did my Saturday run I really felt it. I am back at it this morning and I know you can too!!! My two girls keep me running around like crazy. It's amazing how little time I have now.

Monte - Oh, so sad!!! I am not sure about 2008 yet since I have a work convention that butts up with the Marathon every year. It all depends on when they schedule the convention! I was lucky this year that it moved back a week!

Kristi - I don't have a Garmin (yet), but I have a sports watch. I agree that it is hard to judge your walking intervals, I always tend to walk too long unless I watch the time.

OK, gotta get some work done. Crazy Monday Morning!

Cam - Just wanted to send you and Howard some good thoughts. I wish you all the best. Please give Howard my good wishes.

Good morning. :)

We did four miles on Saturday. My splits were decent, at least for me anyway.

Mile1: 13:42 warm up and up hill
Mile 2: 11:17 slow jog
Mile 3: 13:53 walking
Mile 4: 12:22 w/r intervals

Angie - Congratulations on your first 5K! :thumbsup2 I know how great it feels, having just done my first only a few weeks ago.

Monte - I'll be there in 2008! With bells on!

Cam - Well, that's sorta good news. I'm glad you guys got to spend some time with him.

Where's Sunny? :confused3

Ok, time to face some hard facts.....

1) I can't train with Charlie. He's the greatest husband in the world, and I love him dearly, but he's way too protective. We did 4 miles on Saturday morning and he insisted on being on the inside. Which was fine, except he kept drifting to the right and putting me in the gutter, or on the berm of the road. Several times I almost fell! If that happened you can be sure he would be wishing I was hit by a car when I got up! Seriously, it's so easy to twist an ankle or slip on the gravel on the side of the road. I kept asking him to either get ahead of or behind me, but he wanted to be beside me. Sweet, yes, but if I fell and got hurt now.......

B) I don't think my AmphiPod, which I really really like, is going to work. I am going to contact them about them and see if I'm doing something wrong. I have to literally stop to get the bottles on and off. Maybe they have some other bottle holders. I really like the way it fits, and I love the bottles, easy to hold and drink from, but what good are they if I can't get them in and out swiftly? Kevin - Do you have the RunLite? Do you have issues getting the bottles on and off?

3) I think I have an emotional issue. Watching the start of the NYC Marathon yesterday I was crying. I was all excited watching them set up Port-O-Pot City, for crying out loud! WHY is this such an emotional thing for me? All Charlie had to say, when he saw the start, was "Pretty soon that will be us" and I burst into tears! You guys won't want to be anywhere near me in January. Crying is also way too exhausting. I can not cry before the race. OK, everybody who sees me tearing up please pinch me or slap me or something. Afterwards, once I cross the finish line, I'll be balling my eyes out. But before, no, I can't cry.

And now for the worst news of all..... :sad2: It does not look good for Mist. I should have an answer in the next couple of weeks, but the trial is not going well at all. I got a long email from the director of the sanctuary that rescued her, pretty much telling me to get ready to send her back, unless there is a miracle.

Oh, Judy, I am sending a prayer that Mist can stay with you. How very heart-wrenching this is. I can't believe that someone can get away with mis-treating an animal like that AND get the animal back after you nursed her back to physical and emotional health. Keeping you all in my prayers.
