Wk of Nov 12--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Well the back to back runs went fairly well this weekend. I did 11 miles on Friday with a 13:03 pace and 9.6 on Saturday with a 11:33 pace. I felt good during both runs. My shin splints may be acting up again but they aren't too bad right now.

Matt -- Great job on the race and the new record.

Dave -- Glad DW loved the surprise but sorry it didn't quite work out the way you wanted telling her.

Mel -- Glad your run went well although the 30mph is a lot more impressive.

Tiff -- Good job on your run.

Vic -- Welcome and good luck with your training.

Cruella -- I hate those ice baths and will usually do them only if under lots of pain or DW is insisting. Maybe I will have to submit and try harder.

Mel R -- Glad your adventure race went well. Can't wait to see the pictures.

Krista -- Glad the surgery for Hines went well. Hopefully he will recover well. Although the Steelers aren't doing so good right now.

Kelly -- Hope you feel better soon. Sinus problems are a pain when trying to train for things. :wizard:

Bill

DAve- Congrats! So glad your wife was thrilled with her surprise. Guess she's a smart cookie, that she kinda figured it out. You'll have a great time!

Paul - Great job on your long b2b runs.

Krista - Hope the Steelers win for you today. My Eagles kicked some Redskin butt today :cool1:

Cecilia- Thanks for the tip about the epsom salt bath. I'll have to try that sometime when I have time after my long runs to take a bath. Usually it's finish, get a shower and head off to work.

I walked just under 3 miles today (to and from the FB game). At least it was a happy walk since the Eagles won. Of course, sitting outside in the rain isn't my favorite thing to do, it's much more pleasant when they win.
Hoping to do 8 miles tomorrow, but they're calling for the rain to continue. So I may be inside on the elliptical instead. I'll run in the rain when I HAVE to, but will take it indoors during training.

Terri

So much to catch up with.....

Cam & Howard I'm so sorry for your loss. :grouphug:

Mike I hope your DW is doing better after her accident. Waiting for news must have been so difficult for you!

Krista Could the Steelers be back on track???? :cool1: Actually, wwe are happy about the Jets victory over the Pats this afternoon, and noing for more good news from the Giants tonight!

Vic WELCOME!!! :wave2:

Dave Glad your big "reveal" went well this weekend! :cool1:

Mel Run the Universe is about a month after Disney. This year's event was on 2/4/06. Why don't you come on over and do it with us?

Judy I wish I could come up there and go to court for you and Mist. I'm afraid I'd get thrown out though. Most judges don't appreciate people coming into their court and telling them what they need to do! :rolleyes1 I will be there for you and Mist in spirit. I'm sure Mist's (former) qwner needs to be more afraid of seeing you and the other rescuers in court than you do of seeing her!

Matt I love your idea of doing races as training runs so you don't have to carry your own water! :yay:

So many great training runs I've read about here! You guys really motivate me to get out there even though there's no way I can keep up with you! I have been out getting my steps in this weekend, but like Molli, no Garmin so I don't have much info on how I did.

Big Vic

Welcome. With your presence we now have 2 males of the just barely 50+ variety around here. We could hold our club meeting in a mini cooper.

If you are able to do long runs at 11:30 or so you can expect a bit quicker pace on race day with fresh legs from the taper. As you build up your distance think distance first and pace second. Getting distance is important, speed really isn't. You can work on your pace on shorter days, but long runs should be 1 minute or perhaps even more slower than race target pace. Get distance, then get pace in training. On race day when you're rested put it together.

My training? Pretty good to excellent and feeling it. 2 hours 30 minutes on the treadmill today, cold and wet outside. Never felt fatigued and at 2:15 I got this surge of strength. I have been taking the goo and powerade with me on long runs, and WOW do they make a difference. I'll be sure to start with the goo at the 1 hour point on marathon sunday. Experienced runners have told me this about the goo and powerade, but being a skeptic I was, well skeptical. They were right.

I looked back in last year's running log and the longest run I did last year was 2 hours 16 minutes and I still got the Goofy. Who knows? If I can build to 3 hour long runs I might even finish the marathon without questioning my sanity.

Good luck all

Craig

Tiffany - I am with you needing new music! I was really bored during my 6 miles on Saturday. Time to switch things up!

Krista - awesome pace! :cheer2:

Vic - fabulous 8 miler! :cheer2:

Bill - great job on your back to back runs! :cheer2:

Nancy - great job getting out there! :cheer2:

I posted a OBX half trip report with photos in a separate thread. As always, I am nowhere near most of the times in races that you guys do on your long slow runs, but I have to remind myself that for a nonathlete like myself, it's more about motivating myself to exercise consistently than about being fast (in any sense of the word).

Hey all, I am home sick with DD3. When she gets sick, she gets really sick. DH and I were up in shifts with her since about 2am. He got up first, then I sent him to bed around 4:30 and I stayed up with her. She won't sleep at all. I just put on Cinderella, so hopefully that will calm her down. Also, we are getting a pile of snow right now again. It is very pretty, but the roads are horrid.

I didn't get my training in this morning. But I have all day. I may do some cross training today instead of running. Unfortunately my back injury is flaring up again and is leaving me with preiods of bad sciatic nerve pain. Today the nerve pain is gone, but the back pain is back.

Congrats to all the great runs this weekend. Mine was pretty good also. My muscles feel great even tho it was my longest run to date. Now if I could just get rid of this pesky back problem!!!

Have a great day all. I will be working from home, thankfully I can remote into my work computer!

Morning all!

Dave--Congrats on the reveal! Glad your DW was all for the trip!

Jen--More snow?? Ick! And great job running the track--how in the world did you keep up with what lap you were on?? :rotfl: Hope your DD feels better soon!

Congrats to all those with LRs this past weekend!

Did a 5 miler on Saturday--was pretty brutal. The wind was awful, and wouldn't you know that on an "out and back" run the wind was right in our face for the "back" part. And for Arkansas, it was pretty cold as well. My 10 miler on the TM was so much easier. But DH finished with me, so I guess he's feeling better! I did realize this weekend how impt. it is for me to actually get outside and off the TM for LRs--can't count on race day being a controlled 65 degrees, no wind, and no hills. Wouldn't that make for a great course, though??

Training this week might be hard to get in. With trying to work and babysitting, don't know when I'll get out--maybe tonight. Have a great week all!!!

Good morning all. Thank you everyone for the well wishes for my DW. She is doing a lot better but looks like she will be out of work at least 3 to 4 weeks due to residule from the concussion - still has a lot of pain in neck and head as well as intermittent fatigue, dizziness and hot/cold spells. She came home from the hospital late Saturday night and has basically been in bed since then. Through all this I actually managed to get out yesterday morning at 6 AM - not sleeping a whole lot due to the stress of the weekends happenings - and ran for 11 miles in 1:26. It felt really good to blow off some of the tension and actually have some quite time.

Good morning all. Although, here in New York it is cold and rainy. Ugh.

Friday I went to the Equine Affaire in MA. It was at The Big E. Sunny, was I anywhere near you? What a fabulous day I had! :teeth: I spent about six straight hours walking around, looking at the exhibits. It was a great road trip. Made all the usual road food stops....Dunkins Donuts bagel, some McDonald's fries. Yeah, all the basic food groups. Well, I don't do that but once a year so I guess it was OK. Anyway, I was kind of tired and was contemplating switching my LR to Sunday, but I didn't. I'm stubborn in that way. So I was apprehensive about my longest LR ever. I thought OK I'll just walk the whole thing. But once I got going I felt pretty good so I walked the first three miles then sort of jogged the last four. Not much difference in my splits, so I'm either walking really really fast or running slower than molasses.

Mile 1: 14:25
Mile 2: 13.25
Mile 3: 13:10
Mile 4: 12:02
Mile 5: 13:58
Mile 6: 14:16
Mile 7: 12:46

I was pretty happy with it. First off, because I have NEVER gone that far. And secondly, I looked at this LR as sort of a "How am I doing" test. I was happy with the results. Plus, I am still amazed I am able to function afterwards. I had breakfast and went right out to do chores. Guess all that time on the TM wasn't wasted after all! :goodvibes

Cam & Howard - Thinking of you... :grouphug:

Mike - OMG! I hope DW is doing well today. :flower3: Phew! Scarey!

Nancy - Thank you for the well wishes. The trial is already an hour under way as I write this. It gives me a sick stomach to even think about it. I don't know how I will drive up there tomorrow.

Craig - I too was a "goo skeptic" but I agree - they work! :thumbsup2 I tried Shot Blocks this weekend and I really like them too! Plus, they were easier to get down. But I think they both work really well!

Good morning WISH Team!

Welcome Vic! Glad you’ve joined us.

Mike, that report on the accident is pretty scary. I’m glad all is ok for the family. Hope that those bruises and bumps aren’t too bad today. Usually that sort of thing takes a couple of days to realize how much it hurts. I certainly understand that getting out there to relieve the stress is helpful. That is what got me started.

Jen, good luck with sick one. Stay healthy. Glad you and DH had some time together before the sickness hit. Your training pace is going good and you will finish! Keep up the great work. I think my DH would love those Mickey Crocs! He has his first pair of Crocs and loves them.

Cecilia, thanks for the Epsom salt bath idea. As my long runs get oh so long, I am looking at trying anything so will probably subject myself to that too. The cold soak has been helpful for me to I think.

Terri, wow, you live close to the stadium.

Bill, you are doing so well with your training. Take care of those shins. Sounds like those cold baths are in your future for all your LRs.

Jackie, 5k pouring rain? Yuck. Didja do it?

Krista, good to hear that your pace is improving and you are liking that.

Mel, you are traveling fast these days too. Glad to hear your improving. I sure would have doubts if I saw that 30 mph pace so I know you probably wanted to shake that Garmin to see if it would help.

MelR, I look forward to your report. It is amazing to me that you all do that style of event.

Matt, hope DW gets to feeling better with that hip pain. I enjoyed your race event review. I know you are sure happy with that time! Congratulations!

Kelley, hope your week improves.

Nancy, glad to have you posting even if your training isn’t as fast as you think everyone else is. Your posting helps all of us slower folks remember that it is ok. It’s all about getting out there and doing the best you can. Is now the good start of your training weather opportunities?

Wendy, I read your post and see that you are doing great in spite of the PF. You’ve got a good pace going there too. Hope that your PF is something that will clear up before January. You may consider yourself slow, but you are faster than me with your event times. As you said though, it is not always about the speed, but the motivation to move. I totally agree!

Craig, glad that your time is working out the way you hope and that you are feeling good. It seems that you are on the way to a good January event. Thanks to you for all the encouragement you offer too.

Paul, your advice about taking time and playing pictures is wise. You always have great information to offer. Thanks for that too.

Colleen, you are so right with your comment about supportive family/spouses helping to make the events possible as we move toward our adventures.

Stephanie, that 5k does not sound like an enjoyable one. I have a place where wind effects things on the trail I use and was hoping it wouldn’t be an issue this weekend. Makes for a real stonker.

Helen, I thought of you with the post above…stonker is your contribution to the WISH Team dictionary. Hope you are doing well.

Judy, good job on being stubborn and getting in that training! You did great!

To all you fast people, which is anyone faster than me that could include about everyone! I love reading the posts about 3 hours of running time and the 5 hour pace group. It makes me smile. You will ALL be done and relaxing before I find my way across that finish line, but I’m there with you. I’m slow; I am perfectly ok with it. I will just be hunkering down and getting my groove worked in about at that 3-5 hour time. I have no desire to make the long event a faster than the one I did before event. I sometimes wonder if I am slacking when I think this way, but then I remember that for me it is all about participating and being able to participate that causes me to rejoice.

Warning: Total skim

I miss Houston! Heather actually stayed with me and it was warmer than 30 degrees! It was not too bad in MI, as it was mostly sunny and pretty calm, but not the same....

Mike - OMG! Hoping ffor a evry speedy recovery for DW

Dave -

Vic - Welcome!!!

Solo - Congrats on clinching teh conference championship! It was way past my bedtime, so I didn't watch and forgot to tape. Were you one of the unsung heroes last night? If not, I nominate you for the next time!!!!

Just a quick post as I have MAJOR housework to do and can't afford the temptation of a long post :)

Did my 14 mile LR on Saturday (remember I am a bit behind on my training due ot vacation etc.). It wasn't quite as great as my 12 mile LR but pretty good nonetheless. The weather was perfect - about 60 degrees and sunny - and I felt good going out. I decided to try running 3/10 of a mile then walking 2/10 of a mile - not sure it was worth the extra effort as my speed didn't change significantly. Here are the stats:

Mile 1 13:23
Mile 2 13:09
Mile 3 13:44
Mile 4 13:46
Mile 5 12:59
Mile 6 14:08
Mile 7 14:10
Mile 8 13:45
Mile 9 13:57
Mile 10 13:01
Mile 11 14:59 (had to skip a running interval due to fatigue)
Mile 12 14:02
Mile 13 13:11
Mile 14 14:42 (skipped one running interval here too)

I think that comes out to 13:52/mile

I was definitely tired at the end and during mile 11. I did a power gel (disgusting and will never do again - must find a better alternative), sport beans, honey shot (that worked nicely) and of course lots of water. I did skip 2 running intervals but that isn't too bad for 14 miles. I was very happy to have finished. I took a COLD bath and kept moving and felt pretty good overall for the weekend. Today I feel fine as far as my legs etc. go but now have a miserable cold and may end up losing my voice - ugh.

************************Illuminations Dessert Party Update**************

I sent our PMs to everyone (except those who paid early) on my list. If you are interested in attending and did not contact me yet, please do so asap as we can still add people to the event until the final payment. Also, if I somehow missed sending you a PM even though you have contacted me, let me know as I am not perfect and may have just missed you somehow. I can't thank all of you enough for being so enthusiastic and appreciative throughout this process. I know it will be a great event and I can't wait to see everyone on Sunday evening of Marathon weekend!

You can get a lap clicker at the front desk. There is no way I would be able to count 96 laps!!! So I have to carry the little clicker, but it was worth it!!

Judy - You pace is awesome!! You are way ahead of the sweepers. Nothing to worry about. When I first started running I about died when I saw you had to maintain a 16 minute mile. Now I laugh at myself!!!

Rhonda - I sent you an email. I am so excited about the party!!!

I have been able to get some work done, but not much. When I start making calls, dd3 comes in and cries. Poor thing. She is really going to be sad when I pack her up to go get DD6 from school!!!

Cam & Howard – :grouphug: & pixiedust: to your entire family. And…Extra :grouphug: & pixiedust: for your DS. I can imagine how hard this has all been on him. 8 years ago when DS was 12 yrs old we lost my FIL to Emphysema and then 6 months later lost my MIL to Lung Cancer. It was very hard on Sean watching his grandparents suffer & then to lose them. So, my heart goes out to your DS during this time, to go through losing your parents so close together & then losing another grandparent to cancer a year later. :grouphug:

Judy – pixiedust: that the trial goes better this week and extra :grouphug: & pixiedust: to help you as you sit in the courtroom.

Mike – How scary…and what a way to spend your birthdays. pixiedust: that your DW feels better quickly.

Dave – Congratulations! Glad to hear “DW’s in!” :yay:

Kristi – Congratulations on winning the GooGoo Dolls Meet & Greet! Very Cool! :cool1:

Congratulations to those that raced recently!!!!

Congratulations to everyone on those long runs!!!!!

:welcome:to the Newbies!

Did my 6 mile LR on Saturday. Finished in 1:23:02 for a 13:50mpm Splits were:
Mile 1 – 13:43
Mile 2 – 13:53
Mile 3 – 13:57
Mile 4 – 14:30 (stopped to talk with DH as I was on my way back)
Mile 5 – 14:00
Mile 6 – 12:57
The weather was perfect and the w/r felt good.
Tonight is cross training at the fitness center.

I saw in the Marathon Booklet that they have PowerAde on the course. Anyone know what flavor it is?

Happy Training!

Our race start time was 3:00 am. We had to get up at 1:30am to get there on time. We were told we would start on foot. We would not return to the transition area, so we had to carry all that we needed for the day. Our bikes were transported to a mystery location for later. We were allowed a drop bag at the bikes for bike shoes, but we had to take whatever was in the bag for the rest of the race.

When we arrived and had the prayer and nat. anthem, we were told to walk up the hill and load onto the busses (which had been hidden) to be transported to race start. We ended up coming almost all of the way back to my house to a state park that is near here. Our start was in a gravel parking lot of the biggest state park in ark. On the way out, the school bus transporting about 1/3 of the racers negotiated a turn poorly and ended up sitting on it's axle about 2 miles from race start. They were able to get the bus out and to the start after everyone got off and the bus raised up a little.

We had a mass start run toward a light. We ran to where we saw a big rope suspended between 2 trees holding 38 race packets. The rope was too high to reach and we had to work as a team to get our packets down (this was about 4:30 am) In our packets we got an orienteering map w/ 3 points and after we plotted a course, we were off into the woods. Upon finding them, we got another map w/ 3 more. We came back from the 1st loop in the last 1/2 of the pack. We came in from the 2nd loop in around 15th place. From there, we were given 3 quad maps which we had to grid and 12 coordinates to plot. We quickly plotted and passed many teams in transition. We were off on foot for about 2 miles then down into a creek bed for the next point. We passed another team here and then passed another getting to the next. The next point was a zip line across war eagle creek. It was very cool. I couldn't zip all the way across. I just pulled myself the rest of the way in. From there we had a short trek to the canoe put in. I think it was around 7:30am. At this point, we had the coldest temps of the day (around 27-28deg) and a wind. We came off of the zip line in 6th place and passed several teams to be tied at 2nd or third getting off of the paddle. I think it was a 12 mile paddle. The river/creek became the lake and the winds we in our race. Since we were paddling really hard, we were very wet from all of the splashing. For the last 30 mins of the paddle i was actually worried that i was hypothermic. I was shivering and could not feel my hands and feet. When were got to checkpoint 4, we learned that this was the canoe takeout and transition to bike. I had taken my fleece and hat off earlier and put them back in my pack but didn't want to waste time putting them in the dry sack. BIG MISTAKE. They were filled w/ water and were very heavy. When we got off onto the shore, the guys had th carry the canoe up the big hill while i got the packs and paddles. I was really having trouble here b/c i couldn't feel my feet or legs and i was not walking well. I managed to chug and ensure plus in transition and put my raincoat on as it was still dry. I changed into a dry pair of socks and gloves and put my wet stuff (socks, shoes, gloves) in my pack. After a slow transition, we were off on bikes. The first point was easy, but the second was up a huge hill. I thought i was either going to turn into an instant popcicle or puke. I actually had to stop and push the bike up the hill. At the next manned CP, we were in 3rd place. We had several cp's along gravel roads and huge hills. When the guys realized that we were in the front of the pack, they really helped carry my extra work. They pushed my bike for me to give me a break. On of the next points required that we play one hole of disc golf. They told us to play like we were playing "ultimate" I still have no idea what that means, but i can't imagine what would make a combo of frisbee and golf ultimate :confused3 . After that team challenge, we realized there was a team right on our tails. We got the next twon cP's pretty easily and made it to the last plotted point where they actually had a pretty cool service project planned. Each team had to move a wheel barrell of dirt for the botanical garden that is being built. After that were were given our last map to the finish. we chose a single track route and I really had trouble keep up the pace. We got passed by the team behind us w/ less than a mile to go!!! We finished seconds behind them in 4th place. We were THRILLED to place in this race as the awards went 5 deep and we got cool jackets and $ to spend at the sponsoring store. It was a great race to end the season!! Our finish time was 9 hours 15 mins :thumbsup2

Here are some pics. It would only do links
