Wk of May 25 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hola WISHers!! Things have been busy and I haven't had a chance to stop in and say hello. I only skimmed so I'll generally assume everyone is great :thumbsup2

As per the question of the moment, I went to school in "Bawdimore", about 6 hours from here and I spent my entire junior year in London, so I am a big proponent of going away from home for college! That's not to say that I didn't call home crying everyday for the first month, but I still say it's the best thing I ever did!

TTFN!!

Just jumping in real quick to say Welcome to Shailey! :welcome:

Did Couch to 5k Week 6 Day 1 this morning. By increasing the walk speed a bit I was able to hit 2 miles at 28:00 very solidly. I realize my time Saturday would have been faster if I'd been training all along with a walk speed of 15:00, but didnt' have the confidence to do that. Realized Saturday that improvement only comes with challenging ourselves. So, today's intervals were at 4.0/4.5. Looking forward now to keeping the momentum going and really improving over all. (oh, and the increased calorie burn doesn't hurt, either. After all "It's All About the Dress" :lmao: ) With an ultimate goal of RUNNING the 1/2 in January, I am sufficiently motivated to not succumb to complacency. LOL!

Good morning everyone!

I thought I was going to be spending my day on a field trip with my daughter's 4th grade class, but it was sprinkling rain this morning and her highly rain-phobic teacher cancelled  . We were going to be outside for much of the morning (trip to City Hall and Elfreth's Alley downtown), but still - it was only sprinkling and none of the children melt in the rain as far as I know!

Anyway, that does mean a free day for me! So I have used it so far by starting a blog! I was inspired by all the WISHer blogs I have been reading, and it was surprisingly easy to do - see the link in my signature if you want to check it out. Only one post so far, and only one picture, but I will try to keep up with it and make it more interesting. I'm actually pretty excited!

I had a great run yesterday. I did top the 5 mile mark for the first time :cool1: , and I am very proud of myself. Even better, I felt really good during and afterwards, which makes up for the yucky run on Saturday. BTW - I changed my run/walk interval from 5/1 to 4/1, and increased my pace significantly (from about 12:15 to 11:48!). Pretty interesting!

We then we went to my parents for a Memorial Day cookout. All 10 grandkids were there, and we met my brother's new girlfriend for the first time - she's very nice, but unfortunately moving to Toronto today, so we'll see what happens there!

I can't possibly reply to everyone, but a couple of quick shout-outs:

Duckie - Sorry about your computer :( . We miss you around here!

Terri - Glad you've been able to return to training! Have a great trip!

Bill - Tell Lynnda the cake was amazing! She is a master! :worship:

Shaily - :welcome: You'll love it here!

Aloha Jeff - I'm jealous as always!

And "Hello" to everyone else! Have a great day.

Lynnda: That cake is amazing! How did you make it? I'm guessing the "sand" is sugar? Is the road fondant? What about the rocks (candy?) and cacti? And the sign?

Maura: Mmm ice cream! Sounds like you earned it. And when was the last Gin & Tonic of the spring ehh? ;)

Duckie::wizard: PD for the PC. I know what a pain that can be! Mine ended up taking over 2 months to fix!

Kelly: ooo the Adventure Race sounds fun! Can't wait to hear all about it.

Steve: Wow 56 miles! How long did that take you? And you got back on the next day :worship:

Debra: :dance3: Yay I'm not the only insane one who did Goofy as the first half or full! Are you doing it again this year? Thanks for missing me! And what's this about a "Phipps Conservatory Chocolate exhibit"? What's that? We had a Indiana Jones marathon and then some of the group went to the opening showing. I had never seen IJ so it was neat to see where the scenes at Disney MGM (or whatever they are calling it these days!) came from. I missed Temple of Doom though so I'm still clueless in the Great Movie Ride! Glad you enjoyed it.

Mel: I'll second Debra's question on what the usual schedule is for WDW Marathon weekend. And ice cream social mmmmmmm! See what happens when I miss a week? How 'bout we get a couple of kitchen sinks from B&C and all dig in! *holding spoon already* :rolleyes1

Tracy: Sounds like some good runs (and races :thumbsup2 ) :stitch: ICE CREAM!!! mmmm

Shaily::welcome: What exactly do you have to do for EEC?

Jeff: so what flavor ice cream did you get?? ooo and I wanna learn how to surf-- that sounds fun!

Allyson: Good luck with the Galloway. I trained with MfM using run/walk and it worked great. Keep looking at your progress! Congrats to your DH on his PR!

Cam: Are the intervals part of C25K or is that your add-in? Running the half in Jan :donald: sooo exciting !!! Thanks now I have some motivation to get my butt out and run today! I can still remember that pre-dawn light waiting for the race to start.....

Kira: Bummer on the field trip. The kids must have been sad. Great job on topping the 5 mile mark! :cool1: That is interesting with changing your interval/pace.

pluto:

I went on a 6 miler yesterday and WHEW! it was hot and humid. Definitely summer! I hit the pool after class and that was refreshing. I'm off for some speed play now. *bracing for the heat*

Tracy,

We spent the day at the beach in Waikiki with friends visiting from Oregon.

"Watching the tide roll away."

is that the pink palace in the distance with Duke's at the Outrigger next door?

we are going to be in Kauai (NEXT WEEK!!! :woohoo: ) I wish our layover in Oahu was long enough to hit Duke's...but we will head right over to the one in Lihue from the airport!!!

Lynnda: That cake is amazing! How did you make it? I'm guessing the "sand" is sugar? Is the road fondant? What about the rocks (candy?) and cacti? And the sign?

To answer some of them:

She baked the cake from specialty formulas gathered in little boxes (Cake mix ;))

The sand is graham crakers that the hubby pounded for her (gives a whole new meaning to pounding sand :lmao: ). The road is fondant. The rocks, cactus, sign are all frosting with confectioners sugar to make it hard (still edible and according to Billy very tasty). The lettering on the sign is plain frosting. The cars are the mini-cars that are now becoming popular.

I am sure she will correct me if I am wrong and add more when the two little ones give her a break. :rotfl2:

Hello Everyone

I know I'm way late and behind the movement here, but if case you haven't heard, I've been without electricity for the past 100 hours, something about a young lady's hair appliance, a 200 year old building, incompatible electrical systems, and an adapter which didn't seem to adapt or protect anything.

Hitting too few people given my prolonged absence:

Bill

I told you, I told you, on May 3 that Lynnda should go into business as an uber cake decorator. Her cakes are works of art, and delicious to boot. Personally I can think of several occasions each year when we could use her talents, and I'm sure folks along Florida's atlantic coast would feel the same way.

Cam

14 mpm, my you've come a long way, or better phrased, a million miles.

Mike

Enjoy Kauai. We were there 16 months ago, and sadly got on the plane and came back to the Boston area. My wife says it best, "paradise doesn't begin to capture this."

Mel

A tough and life altering decision awaits you, Jeff, and your daughter. Regarding academics, remember that all Colleges and Universities have talented faculty with multiple advanced degrees, experience and interests, and can give students the opportunity to learn and grow (and yes there are a few total losers on the faculty everywhere, sorry about that, its not my fault ). The key is any student at nearly any institution, who wishes to work, study, and learn, can get a great education.

At the big state schools, the student is entirely on his or her own to get this education, as the schools don't have the ability (or care) to follow students around to make sure they are working. Come to class, or don't come to class, they won't notice and won't care. The positive of this is students at big state schools become independent pretty quickly, or (the negative) fall through the cracks.

At little schools, they do care for and watch the kids a lot more (the positive), but the negative is socially it can be a lot like high school, and the kids don't have to exert their independence with this support structure.

My only (free) advice is to go someplace that makes your daughter feel comfortable and seems to "fit" who she is. And remember, if after 1 year it isn't a mutually beneficial relationship, she can always transfer to another institution.

A great secret of many institutions of higher education is it's often easier to transfer into an institution than begin as a freshman. We transfer in a number of students each fall and spring, and the competition and accept/reject numbers for transfers are always a bit more favorable for students than the freshman pool, which right now is really tough.

I wish you luck. We went through it for a fall 2003 entry to College, and it was illuminating and frustrating. Translation: College admissions are a complete game, run by an admissions department which tries to "build" a class with desired characteristics.

Best to all
Craig

Lynnda - From a fellow cake baker...AWESOME job on the cake! I love it! Great idea to use graham crackers...I thought it was brown sugar! You mind if I steal a photo for my idea book? I keep all kinds of photos of different cakes to refer to. It saves me from having to be too creative!

Aloha Jeff - Love the beach photo! We were in that exact spot last August. Ahhhh...memories. Although what comes to mind isn't all that good...DD3 getting stung by a jellyfish...me kicking a rock in the water and cutting my foot open... But still...I wish we were there! We loved Tiki's...ate there at least 3 times a think! Yum!

Kira - WTG on the 5 mile mark! You SHOULD be proud! I know it sounds stupid, but I actually cried when I finished my first 5 miles. (I know...what a crybaby!) But really...I was SO not a runner, never had been...so 5 miles was huge for me! WTG again! :thumbsup2

I myself have been totally off of my training. Not on purpose either! Finally got in 2.5 miles on Sunday night, which brings me to my next thought... Why are people so RUDE??? I constantly seem to get the "You're going to do a triathlon???" or "You're going to do a 1/2 marathon???" question in that horrible sarcastic and rude tone. Like they just can't believe it or they think I can't do it! I may be packin' a little more than you, but I can take you any day...yeah...that's what I'd like to say. Oh well...just more fuel for my fire! :furious:

Have a great day WISHers! Unlike some others...I know you can do it!:)

Craig - When you get up to 600 hours without power you might get some sympathy from down here. Anything less is just a minor incovience. :rolleyes1 Although Lynnda is getting quite good at suffering through my simple fixes that turn into bigger issues so she might have more sympathy. :rotfl2: Glad to hear that everything else is going well in Paris and yes we will keep your secret that it was you who was trying to straighten the hair. ;)

So I will assume since you have tasted the cakes, that you are the big kid that seems to magically appear at all the parties and whom no one recognizes. :lmao:

Mel - As for college, I went to school 200ish miles away. It was a great distance to be far enough away to have freedom and close enough to go home when I needed too. As the years went by, that number shrank quite a bit. I would stay in-state due to costs but if someone offered a full ride, I would definately consider going elsewhere. The nice thing about Florida is they have several schools throughout the state. You can pick whether you want big or small and I think about every major has a nationally recognized school here. Besides if she goes to UCF, then you can watch your income disappear to Disney much faster. :lmao:

Mike,

Yep, that's the Royal Hawaiian Hotel aka "The Pink Palace" dwarfed by all the other hotels and condo's. My first job in the islands was working in the room service department. That was 20 years ago!:scared1:

Have a good trip to Kauai. Dukes is still hopping as always.

HELLO TEAM

I feel just horrible that I have not been able to keep up lately and I have no training to report but I have been reading and keeping up, just no time to post individually. I have not ran since last wednesday because even though the pain has reduced significantly since MINNIE it's still too much to be able to train for a marathon any time soon. So I decided absolutely no running for 2 weeks. I haven 't even made it a week yet and I am already trying to compromise with myself. :)

I have keeping up with strength training, yoga and got my Pilates for Dummies DVD - LOVE IT!!

What about squats when dealing with IT injury, any input?? I do them in my Body Pump class and I am wondering if I should not be.

Have to get back to work.

HI all! OMG, 3-day weekends get me so behind.

Mel - I had teh benefit of being in-State, while going to school 10 to 12 hours away. I highly recommend that. Most of my firends went to schools where they could come home on teh weekends adn a bunch of firends were. I don't know how much they really matured. Seemed to cling ot HS friends. WHile I still ahve soem firends from HS, a higher percentage of my collegeg frieds staied with me in life.

Craig - Good ot see oyu! Glad you are back with us. :goodvibes

Lynnda - OMG. Amazing job again!!! Now, do you actually let the kids eat these masterpieces? :scared1: ;)

Debra - No worries. I had you share this weekend. We don't have a local DQ, so we stopped on teh way up Friday adn wat down Saturday and last night at one of the local places. Oh, and we had s'mores Sunday after movie popcorn. :scared1:

TO all those who think I;m and over-achiever. I don't think you understand. I had to walk the last 0.2 miles to get home. :rotfl:

Well, I need to write up a full report, but I did my 5.08 mile Mackinaw Bridge Rac Saturday adn got my 3rd PR for teh year. :O Don't worry, though, with summer coming, there will eb a setback due to heat. ;) Was goign to run yesterday but I oculd barely walk from 4 hours of power gardening. WIll try to run tonigh. Thinking that's goign to be slooow, though.

Hello team with which yes I am now back to racing with...YAY!

I posted a race report on the kudos/encouragement thread. Not a PR...Grrr!...but at least not a DNS or DLF.

I'm just popping in here to say.....

OriginalBill - No matter how crabby I am, you always make me laugh. :rotfl: I love your posts! (Trying to shake mental image of Craig with hair straightener device...)

Jeff - Ohhh I stayed at the Outrigger. I went there back in the days when I "jogged" and I remember trotting up Kamehameha Boulevard very very early.... :goodvibes

Jeff - Ohhh I stayed at the Outrigger. I went there back in the days when I "jogged" and I remember trotting up Kamehameha Boulevard very very early.... :goodvibes

Me thinks you mean Kalakaua Avenue. That's the main street through Waikiki. Kamehameha Highway is not where one would want to be out running. :lmao:

Good afternoon, Wish team!! I'm going to check in before the week gets too crazy! :)

Mel--I can't believe it's already time to start talking colleges. Time flies!! I went to school about 2.5 hours away from home in northern Ohio. Even though I stayed in state, I went to a private, Christian college, so no break for my parents (or me, all the loans were in my name). It was nice being that far from home, yet still pretty close. I cried every day the first semester of my freshmen year and every time my parents or Stephen left after being up for the weekend or I left home after a break until the day I graduated. But it was really good for me to get away on my own and grow-up a little. I'm not using my degree right now, which my dad loves , but I'm still really glad that I went away to school and majored in Communications/Broadcasting, I learned a lot about life while in college and besides my major was pretty fun. ;) Tell Kayley good luck!!!!

Bill/Lynnda--That cake is fabulous!!! I love it! Did you ever post pics of Timmy's cake? I'm going to second Craig, Lynnda you need to be business for yourself.

Craig--Sorry you are still without electricity! Don't give Lesley a super hard time though, I understand the quest for having perfect hair and know how important that is! As an aside, I think it's really cool that you and Lesley vacation together. I've never been anywhere alone with my Dad, except for the occasional birthday breakfast when I was younger, I know she will treasure those weeks together for the rest of her life.

Debra--Good luck packing!! I do not envy you that job at all! I'm not sure if Stephen answered you or not, but the Flying Pig is the first weekend in May. The 5K and 10K is on that Saturday and the half/full marathon is on that Sunday. It sounds like that's the same weekend as the Pittsburgh marathon.

Claire-Wanna hear a secret? I've never seen any of the Indiana Jones movies either. :ssst: Stephen bought the last one--The Last Crusade maybe? and we turned it off about 45 minutes because I was so bored. :tiptoe: But for the record, I'm not a movie person and I can hardly sit through ANY movie, unless it's something that I really love or want to see.

Tracy--You got some great mileage in over the weekend! That picture of Stephen and I was taken at 'Ohana's about 5 hours after the marathon in 2007--that's why I look so beat!

Amy--I hope you are feeling better today and that you survived softball mania!

Aloha Jeff--Beautiful pictures like always! I hope you enjoyed time with your friends and that you don't wait another 13 years to see them again!

MiaBanda--Just ignore those people, seriously. I know how hard it is and how angry it makes you, but they really aren't worth your energy. I have a BIL like that, when I was training my first half in 2006, he had the nerve to tell me that since I do run/walk intervals than I wasn't really running. :furious: So I challenged him to do my 8 mile LR with me. Guess who easily finished and who barely made it 2 miles. And guess who was completed 4 1/2 marathons and 1 full. I'll give you a hint, not him. ;) Hang in there!!!

Terri--Enjoy your vacation! I only have 227 days til Disney!!

Shaily--:welcome:

As for me, not much to report. All of a sudden I feel like I am huge! Although when I went to the doctor's on Thursday, I had only gained 4lbs last month, so that made me happy! I hit 29 weeks yesterday, so 11ish weeks to go. Even though this has been an extremely easy pregnancy, I'm still ready for it to be over and meet this little guy. It still doesn't feel quite real, but I'm sure once I start getting those contractions, it's gonna feel real really quick!!!! :lmao:

Good luck training and have a great week!

Krista

Jeff: so what flavor ice cream did you get??

We shared Mint Chip, Rainbow sherbert, and Rocky Road.

Tonight is our montly post run BBQ. The menu is chili, hot dogs, or chili hot dogs if you choose.

We moved the date forward to accomodate several people being out of town for summer travel, but more importantly because of the 3 hour "LOST" finale on Thursday night. :lmao:

Me thinks you mean Kalakaua Avenue. That's the main street through Waikiki. Kamehameha Highway is not where one would want to be out running. :lmao:

Ok, really, it was 1981. I can barely remember what I did last week.
:rotfl:

Hello team! After not having run really since Easter because we were getting hit everyday, I returned to the States and continued to the running break because....well....I could! We spent the last couple of weeks just being a family, doing things like playing Rock Band (awesome game by the way) and watching movies. I figured I could get back into a routine after I went back to work, which happenend today. Basically, I have been a slug and have enjoyed every minute of it!

To kick off my new running season, I ran the Cotton Row 10k yesterday and my wife ran the 5k. Good race, well attended and well organized. The weather was perfect, although I am having to get used to humidity all over again. We were able to meet up with Allie before and after the race and it was great meeting her. Thanks, Allie! Some pics below.

While my legs are KILLING me today, I was very happy to complete the 10k with essentially no training while still feeling halfway decent at the finish. It's good to be back in the land of the runners again.

Happy Tuesday everyone! I just can't keep up with this post!!

I had an ok long weekend, DD got:sick:  again:( she ran a fever all weekend and now has a horrible cough/congestion. I had her to the Dr. today and there is some sort of viral crud going around. Since I am the one with the flexible job and the ability to work from home when needed, I am at home with DD and probably will be tomorrow as well. DD loves to be a mommy cling-on when sick, so training has been not happening. We did manage a nice 3 mile walk this weekend though before she was really congested.

My .02 on college. My family is in Vermont and I went to school at UNH, about 3.5 hours away. It was perfect, not too far, not too close. I really feel that having that experience made me really independent and more outgoing. I wouldn't change it for anything and will encourage DD to do the same thing. I know a lot of people who didn't and regret it now.

Have a good week everyone!

:woohoo: to Kevin, Kristen & Allie!! Kevin -- so glad you are running where it is safe!
Kristen & Allie -- congrats!!! :yay:

Awesome pix! Thanks for posting, Kevin!!

Krista - Enjoy having Carter all to yourself! I guarantee once you have to share him (besides the reality of all those mid-night feedings), you will be WISHing you had him all to yourself again! ;)

Lynnda -- that cake is a masterpiece!!! :worship: I am so incredibly impressed. Oh, and LOVE the graham cracker sand -- great job, Bill!!! You know Lynnda could not have done it without you. :goodvibes

Angie - Good job taking a break from running. There are MANY other things you can do for fitness without risking your well-being. Hey, I'm doing the pilates for dummies DVD, too. It makes me feel :cloud9: knowing we are doing the same workout!

Terri -- Kudos to you for getting in the steps! :flower: I had been wondering how you were feeling. So glad you have some R&R at WDW to look forward to!

Sorry to all I missed. :grouphug:
