Wk of Mar 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Speaking of shoes....I've been having some shoe issues lately. They're fine for me on the TM but when I run out on the pavement I'm not so fond of them. Just curious if anyone has shoes they love that they'd like to recommend. I'll try anything. I started alternating 2 pairs for my LRs outside to minimize the problems. It's nothing major but I'm just not loving them like I have in the past. I'm also looking out for some different socks, mine keep giving me blisters. Again, this wasn't a problem when I was doing 3-4 miles but after 8-10 it's a problem. Any recommendatons?

Rosy - I don't know if you have any running stores where you are, but the best thing I can say is you need to get fitted for shoes. I really regret not doing that earlier last year as I wonder if it might have helped save me from a stress fracture. If you don't have access to a running store then you'll need to figure out your arch and level of pronation on your own. I highly recommend checking out the following articles from Runners World to help you determine your foot type.
http://www.runnersworld.com/subtopic/0,7123,s6-240-319-326-0,00.html
That being said, you then need to focus on finding shoes that fit your needs. You can also use the shoe finder on Runners World to help. From there you want to go to a store and try as many of those shoes on as possible to see which one feels most comfortable. I'm personally a fan of Asics and run in the GT-2100 series. I knew as soon as I tried it on that was the shoe for me, but you'll need to find what works for you. Hope that helps!!

Cindy - Welcome to the boards!
Jen - Awesome sounding race. Can't wait to hear how it goes.
disnutt - The only time I really alternate shoes is when it is snowy out, then I'll wear trail shoes.
For those of you asking talking about trail shoes, I run in the Asics Gel Trabuco IX. I think that has been replaced by the Asics GT - 2120 Trail. I haven't bought a pair of those yet, but I have tried them on and I thought they felt great.
Dave - That is so great that you are doing the couch to 5K program with your daughters and will be doing a race with them. I'm sure they will love all the time with their dad!

It sounds like you will get a great group together for the CDC. I love the penguin medal. I may have to add that to my list of Wishful Races. The Flying Pig is on there, so that one may be on the radar for me next year. We'll see though, since it conflicts with Minnie and who knows, I may want to run that one again!

Wow you guys, so many great ideas for crockpot cooking. I think I may have to invest in one of those. You guys are making me hungry....must go eat breakfast soon! And get back to work...

Greetings all. :)

This morning I did 2 miles. The first at 4.0 @ 1% then the second at 4.2 @ 1% with the last five minutes at 4.5. I'm really trying to get a little faster so the Minnie girls don't have to wait hours for me to show up at the finish line. :rolleyes1

Today BOTH my knees hurt. I've realized something. if I want to keep running, I have to lose some weight. Very seriously. Or else give up the running thing. I've been trying for a very long time to lose weight but LTO. I REALLY NEED TO FOCUS on this. :sad2:

Krista - I meant "warm and fuzzy"!! WHAT were you thinking!?!?! :rotfl:

Steve - YAY Steve! I'm happy to see you. :yay: I see you're suffering from WTO. (Work Takes Over. Sunny coined "Life Takes Over", I'm plagiarizing.)

my slow pace was 4.2 mph

Cam - Oh....swell.....and I thought I was speeding up. OK, I'll meet you guys back at OKW. No sense in you Speed Demons waiting around for me.

Jeff - Ahh I see you have WTO also. Darn work! Interrupts everything! WAAAY cool on the LIME Brooks! :cool2:

Dave - Oh that's sooo adorable! princess: princess: I'm so happy for them! :goodvibes

disnutt - Yes, I alternate between two pairs of ASICS Kayanos and a pair of Saucony Hurricane Grid 8s. I really like them both (Don't get me started on the Kayanos. I once took them to bed but that's a different post.) The Kayanos are much lighter and less substantial than the Hurricanes. I don't really have a formula for which I pick on what days. I just decide when I am getting dressed.

Krista - I think your avatar pic is adorable! :goodvibes And I can't believe you let your dog go to a woman's basketball game alone! :rotfl: Hmmm...I think I have to dig out our crock pot. We've never used it. Our solution to dinner is usually take out! Well, that certainly explains a few things, doesn't it?

Cindy
- :welcome:

Dave- My 11 yo princess: is participating in 'Girls on the Run' it is a program to help introduce girls to running and healthy behaviors. She's really enjoying it and will be completing her first 5k (I'll do it w/ her and the group) in May. Good luck to your princesses!

Kristin – WTG for pushing yourself to finish your run. Great pace!

Lily – Good to see you! Hope things settle down for you so you’ll have more time to spend with us here! :)

Kristi – Super cute avatar! We have the same problem with eating a good dinner. There just aren’t enough hours in the day.

Stephanie – Sorry your knee isn’t cooperating!

Cam – Great job on the run! Hey, how’s that 100 crunch a day challenge going?

Jeff – I’m jealous of your lime green shoes.

Dave – How fun that the girls are training for a 5K!

Jen – Oh, no! I hope you can find a new assistant quickly.

Cindy – :welcome:

We took Mom to IKEA last night. She'd never been before. We actually ended up walking the store twice! Hoping to get outside tonight for another run/walk.

Mel--Stephen was talking about the CDC last night and I keep thinking more and more about it. Training for it would be a great way to stay in shape for summer and I would get to see all of my WISH buddies again. And if *things* were happening by then, it would be the very beginning and I think I would be okay to run or at least walk a half marathon. I'd hate to use a vacation day, I get 17, but I have 15 planned already, I'd like to hang on to those 2 in case of anything happening, but I guess we could drive up Friday night and then leave after the half. Although that might be a long, stinky car ride home!! Hmmmmm.....

Pat--This may sound like a crazy question, but how big of a deal is the CDC? Is it a bigger deal than the Chicago marathon in October (La Salle Bank?) or smaller? The only reason I ask is Stephen was seriously thinking about running the one in October, but we decided against it because the hotel rates that weekend were astronomical, I'm wondering if they will be as bad for the CDC.

Now I'm off to go and check for crock pot recipes! And maybe the Chicago Distance Classic. ;) I guess I should do some work too, since that's what I am getting paid for!

Ok, the CDC is nowhere near the scope of the full in October. I'd have to check my finisher's certificate at home, but it is less than 10,000 participants and you self-corral. Also, since it is a Jonh Bingham event there is a generous 4 hr time limit, so IF you need to take it easy you wouldn't be swept. That said, DH and I finished at 3:30 last year and we were definitely at the back of the pack.

Unfortunately Chicago is expensive no matter when you are there. DH and I would be glad to house any WISHers who need a place to stay....just as long as you are ok with pesky dogs. We have a golden and a black lab who love to be loved and the golden especially is not shy about wanting some attention!! We'd also be happy to host a pasta party on Saturday for all the WISHers. We live about 45 minutes southwest of the city so we aren't far, although Chicago is such a cool place that maybe everyone will want to take advantage of checking it out....just something to think about.....honestly I am not that familiar with Chicago, although one of my DDs lived there for a couple of years. I am really excited that WISHers are coming to Chicago!!

Carrie--You saw Hines Ward! My Hines Ward!!   I think I need to move to Pittsburgh, or would that be considered stalking?

Kiena--I realized after I posted my last post, I forgot to :welcome: you! Please forgive me!! I think the Girls on the Run is an amazing program, I would love to get involved with my local chapter and be a coach.

Cindy--:welcome: ! You'll soon find that we could care less about pace around here, we're just happy to get our steps in. Good luck training!!

Kelley--Thank you so much for the crockpot info. I found one at Target for $50, looks like I'm making a Target run sometime this week!

Jen--Good luck with work! That stinks!!

Judy--You see, we trust Hines, that's how he can go to a women's bb game by himself. ;) By the way, I'm with you on the take-out for dinner, hence the plea for healthy and quick recipes! I love to cook, just not after working all day and then running 4 or 5 miles.

Kristin--Good luck on your shoe dilemma!

So, I've spent about 30-45 minutes looking at the CDC website, the course looks nice! But are all of those out and backs discouraging? I am having visions of the out and back at mile 20 at Disney. :scared: I saw there was a special rate at the Hilton for marathon runners of $189 a night. Hmmmmm....

OK, I have been going crazy all day with the boards being down because I have great news!

I just found out that DH can defer his 2007 Boston entry until 2008!

He qualified in the Fall of 2005, so this would have been the last year to use his qualifying time. I can't wait to tell him.:yay:

This means he won't need to re-qualify in the Fall and I will definitely be able to run Disney again.  We don't train for marathons at the same time because it is too hard on the kids. (We are both 40+ and need a lot of recovery time.):rolleyes1

Colleen

I'm behind. I missed yesterday and had 7 pages of posts to go through! I'll never get to everyone and I apologize.

Welcome to everyone new!

Happy to hear workouts are going well.

I did a three mile run in 31:03 mins yesterday of which 26 minutes was speed work. It went well. Rest day today; tomorrow--weekly session with trainer.

Stretching: in hip rehab, they told me to stretch before and after running. So I've been doing just that. Also, it takes about 18 seconds for the signal to get to the brain to relax the muscle so they say to hold the stretch for 20 seconds. 30 is better.

Happy workouts everyone!

Ugh, I had a long post typed up and apparently the boards went down when I was trying to post it.

Did a 35min. tempo workout today. Had some knee pain at the beginning, but the faster I pushed the tempo the less it hurt??:confused3 Anyway, I started out with 10min/mile and went up to 8:34min/mile and then kept it there for around 10 minutes. Ended up doing just under 4 miles in the 35min.

Krista--Love the new avatar! Sounds like that crockpot is just what you need. I use ours a lot--even made a cake in it--but then I do a lot of cooking since I'm home during the day. I'll scrounge around my recipe book and look for easy healthy things!

Steve-Great to hear from you. I think right now we are putting the Akron Marathon on our schedule. That would actually make 3 marathons in 365 b/c of Little Rock being in march of this year!:scared1:

Colleen--How great for your DH to be able to defer until '08--and great that you can now do Disney!!!:cool1:

MelR--please post your weblink--would love to check it out. You are our resident "Dean Karnazes"of the WISH team!

Christa--How is your out of control week going??

Sunny--great to hear from you!

Jen--HOpe you find a new assitant soon! No need for added stress!

Lily--Glad to hear from you as well. Seems like a lot of us have had LTO/WTO issues right now!

Well, dinner is almost done so I need to go finish up! I have a webcast cont. ed tonight--Yuck!! So I'm sure I'll be Dis-ing as well!

UGH! I was going crazy with the DIS being down. AND I had typed a nice long response that got lost in cyberspace. Fortunately, I still had a piece of it in word perfect, so here's what's left! :rotfl:

Cam - Oh....swell.....and I thought I was speeding up. OK, I'll meet you guys back at OKW. No sense in you Speed Demons waiting around for me.
Silly girl! The "slow" characterization was purely sarcastic. ;) And remember, Rhonda and I finished with a 14:57 pace last year (my fault -- entirely -- my hip gave out in the first mile and I slowed the poor girl down, as usual!!!). The race is "only" 9.3 miles. Even speeding our pace 2 minutes puts us less than 19 minutes ahead of anyone at the pacing limit! :goodvibes

Cam – Great job on the run! Hey, how’s that 100 crunch a day challenge going?
Not as consistent as I'd hoped. I think I've done it about 75% of the nights. I could actually feel my ab muscles when I ran last weekend. It was interesting to finally feel like I'd actually been working them. I do want to get back on track with using the balance ball every day, but my body is just adjusting to the time change and getting up early has been impossible.
We took Mom to IKEA last night. She'd never been before. We actually ended up walking the store twice! Hoping to get outside tonight for another run/walk.
Oh, that is some serious cross-training! :thumbsup2

Pat -- that is so sweet and generous of you!

So, I've spent about 30-45 minutes looking at the CDC website, the course looks nice! But are all of those out and backs discouraging? I am having visions of the out and back at mile 20 at Disney. :scared: I saw there was a special rate at the Hilton for marathon runners of $189 a night. Hmmmmm....

Thanks for the heads' up on the hotel, Krista! I'd better get to work on checking out the race website. I am really hoping for a ding fare so that I don't have to explain to Howard WHY we are spending over $500 for flights for a weekend! :scared1: BTW, adorable new pic of Hines. I can't tell -- was he happy with the situation? Oh, and did I tell you that Jenn wrote me an email that I had to read to Cali? My dog is the only one I know who gets her own AOL mail!!!! Yes, I sat her on my lap last night in front of the computer and read her an email from her "big sister". :rotfl:

Hi everyone, no training for me today, as my legs were really sore from my race on sunday, playing two hockey games on monday night and then my 4.5 mile run yesterday. So, I decided to rest today, and get back to jogging tomorrow.

Matt--sorry to hear about the tough runs. Hang in there!
Martha--haven't ever gotten a bruise on top of my foot, could it possibly be from having your shoes tied too tight?
Jim--nothing like making us in the cold weather jealous of your warm weather!!! Just kidding, I only wish we had weather like that right now!!
Mel--WTG on your run! That's awesome that you got under 11 min.
Kristin-WTG for getting your workout in despite not feeling well...That is awesome!
Jen--that's great that you got outside for your workout despite the weather conditions.
Judy--When I was going to school for physical education and exercise science, I always remember being told to hold stretches for approx. 30 seconds.
Lily--Hope things settle down for you really soon. I know that feeling of so much going on, it can get crazy at times.
Christa--WOW! Great pace on your run!!! Hang in there with your busy week!
Leana--don't worry about your placement, taking 11 minutes of your last 10k is an awesome accomplishment!
Steve-nice pace on your run!
Cindy-WELCOME TO THE BOARDS!!!! YOu will love it here!

I know I missed some people, but I had to keep it short today as BDF is here to hang out, and he is whining for me to get off the computer. :rolleyes1

Our solution to dinner is usually take out! Well, that certainly explains a few things, doesn't it?

Judy--you crack me up! :lmao: I know what you mean about take-out. Krista can attest to the countless nights we've "given up" on making dinner and called Dominos Pizza. I'm liking all the crock pot ideas.

Carrie and Jen--fine, if you must insist.....HI! :) Although don't feel too bad that I missed you. As I was typing my post last night and Krista was sitting on the couch next to me, I was skimming the thread to reply to people and I skimmed right over Krista's post, to which she replied, "What, you're not going to reply to me?" Hence, the comment about her avatar in the post. :)

Kristin--I would also agree with others about getting fitted for shoes. Maybe you have already, but if you haven't, I would try to find a place that can fit you. It's amazing how the right (or wrong) pair of shoes can change everything about your runs.

Cindy and Kiena—WELCOME!!

Ok, just a drive by. But I do have to say it feels good to actually get a chance to check in with you guys more often. So how many WISHers do we actually have considering the CDC now??

Steve

Hi all!!!

What was UP with the boards this afternoon?!?

It's thunderstorming something furious so I better make this quick (promise to catch up later...)

:welcome: Cindy!!

OK, so a couple of announcements....

1. File under "what have I done": I applied for the lottery for the NYC marathon this evening. (I KNOW!) My thought is that, should I get it, I can always defer to 2008, which is when I think I really want to run it--- but it could be a good tuneup for the Goofy, no?

2. OK, in looking over this years vacation budget, I think I might have to back off the Yacht Club for marathon weekend. (This Christmas Cruise on the Magic is killing me.) Anyhow, I call on my WISH teammates-- if I switch my reservation to, say, Pop Century, am I going to hate it? For you vets, how was the transportation to the parks and the race on race day? I have stayed at the All Stars several times, so I know what I'm getting into-- just want to make sure that I'll be happy there....

The weather here for the remainder of the week looks really good, so I'm hoping to get a 10 miler in Saturday or Sunday. In addition to whatever I manage to get in the next couple of days.

Happy training!
Kevin :earsboy:

Okay question time :rolleyes1

I am traveling for business to Orlando :cool1: from Sun-Wed. I will have Sunday free (arrive at MCO about 11am) to do whatever. I'm thinking of a quick trip to Disney (my hotel is about 30mins away). This is my first ever long distance trip as a solo.

So -
#1 - Would you do this? Is it safe for a solo at Disney?
#2 - If the answer is yes what would you do with your time????

Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and btw I am also going to become an international traveler for the 1st time ever this spring (losts of firsts) as I have to travel to the country of Denmark by myelf on business :scared1: Scared out of my tail so if anyone has tips for this very inexperienced traveler I'm all ears :guilty: :goodvibes

Hellllooo Team!!!!! I am about to do some Balance Ball Cross training. Our living room TV bit the dust, so that has been a bit of a commotion tonight. We think the girls may have broken it when they were fighting about who could turn it off. One had the remote and one the TV buttons... on, off, on, off.. you get the picture. Well, actually no one gets the picture now!!!! :rotfl2:

Steve - OHHH THANKS!!! You made me feel special!!! Hope your work lightens up. I am the queen on too much at work, but I really try to check in when I can. The joys of being able to close my office door!!!!

Minnie - I travel alone all the time, tho never Internationally. If I were in Orlando and had one day at WDW, I would split the day and do MK 1/2 and Epcot 1/2. But that is just my thoughts!!! Though after running the 1/2 marathon through Epcot, I don't know if I can even walk past the ball and not want to jog out of pure joy!!! Anyhoo, don't worry about traveling along. Mind your P's and Q's, keep track of your items and never forget or lose your passport or plane tickets!!!! Also bring a good book along for those long airplane and airport waits.

Krista - I was super busy today, but I promise to get you some crockpot recipes. Seriously, I have hundreds. I love recipes and love to cook. I have left many things in the crock for 12 hours on low. Soups, stews and other liquidy meals are fine. Chicken doesn't turn out too hot if it cooks too long, it really dries out. Again I PROMISE to post some recipes for you. Is there anything that you or Steve really hate, because I will steer clear of those! Oh and I have 2 crocks and neither have the fancy timers on them. You can be very successful with a regular crock, if you cook the right things for the right length of time!

Cam - I stayed at the Hilton when I was a Freshman in College, many moons ago. It was B*E*A*U*T*F*U*L. I won an award and had to attend a conference there. I need to check out the race course. Where does it start? Is the Hilton within walking distance?

Pat - Are there any other hotels within walking distance from the start? I may splurge and stay close instead in the northern burbs.

So did anyone see that the WDW Full and 1/2 are filling up??? :scared: I hate being rushed into commitment!!! I wanted to wait until I ran my 1/2 in May to see how it went before I decided on the Full. UGHHH. I think I am going to do the Full... but will the WISHers be there for me if I fall back? I know I will not be running an 11 minute mile for the whole 26 miles. I will be lucky to average a 13 minute mile for that length of time.

OK, gotta go see what I can so on that Balance Ball... my abs are trying to talk me out of it!

I got in 40 minutes of weights this evening, then registered my mom for the half. Since they started posting %s I figured we'd better register. Now to book the hotel room.

We ended up there for our first night (Fri) due to my unknown status as to whether I'd be able to make the half marathon to see DW run or whether I'd have to drive down on Sat. I showed up late (11pmish?) and we then got up at like 3:30 or something obscene, ran the race, and came back and checked out by noon (they let us late checkout) so my theory is as long as the bed is livable, forking out a bunch of cash for those pre-race nights seems pretty pointless.

My one tip on Pop though, "pool view" is translated to "screaming kids at all hours both day and night regardless of pool hours." :sad2:

Jen...you'll have the whole team there to lean on. And there's the 15th anniversary medal to get!

Minnie...no worries about going to WDW alone. When I've had the opportunity, I go to EPCOT to browse World Showcase at my leisure. That also puts you close to Boardwalk and Y&B.

Krista...I got a new crockpot last year, one of those cool ones that Stephanie mentioned that switches over to warm on a timer. Before that, I had one from my first marriage...used it for over 10 years before any problems. Love the crock!

Kevin...good luck with the lottery.

Cindy...welcome!

I did 30 minutes again tonight, but no sub-11s. Wicked head wind on the way out so 1st mile was 11:40, but the remaining 1.6 were at 11:06. Avg for the run was 11:19 :cool1:

Does anyone know anything about AirTran? I can get a nonstop from Sarasota to Midway for $243 or can fly ComAir with a stop in Atlanta for $224. I haven't flown anywhere in about 7 years so I'm out of practice.
:guilty:

Hi WISH Team!
I've tried to read some and wanted to post that I did TM tonight and a 3.1 in 40 minutes. For me, that is great and I'm happy.

Welcome to all the new folks. You are going to love this place. I've seen quite a few questions being asked. If yours isn't answered, ask again and again. Some get "lost" in the fray sometimes.

My shoes are Mizunos. I trade off 2 pair Wave Creation and Wave Rider.
Also, fit at a running store for sure if you can get to one. Best advice and if the shoe doesn’t fit they take them back! So do some of the online stores I think.

Croc pot rules!

Mike, I’m too slow for you and you wouldn’t like my advice. DS says the same thing. It doesn’t work for him to go too slow b/c it hurts. Best I can say is to slow it down enough so you can enjoy the view and not hurt doing it.

Rosy, socks…you are not wearing cotton right? I have sock issues, but it’s not blisters just finding the right ones. I don’t like Thorlo thick, but I do like a bit of a thicker sock.

My DSis uses Air Tran and often too so I guess she likes them.

Gotta get to the bed so I can not feel exhausted in the a.m. Hope to get back here more. There's lots going on that I find I'm missing.
