Wk of Mar 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

I did 3.1 on the TM in 39:39. I did a lot of that at a 2.0 incline. My running was at 5.4 mph! and my slow pace was 4.2 mph

With the increased running pace, I was really limited to 2+ minutes of running at a time. The intervals, when I did them were R2/W1. I'll tell you one thing -- 4.2 feels easy after 5.4! And 5.4 at an incline of 1.0 feels a lot easier than 4.8 at 2.0!!! Can you tell I had fun playing with the buttons on the TM tonight? LOL! I think being properly "fueled" made a big difference. I ate a lean cuisine panini after my WW meeting and on the way to the gym. I may ride the bike for a while first next time to have a break between eating something as substantial as a sandwich and running.

Vic - Ahhh.... trail shoes. don't even get me started. I don't even need an excuse. I have 9 pair (im not really a collector eitther, I just cannot find a pair that works for me.) I know exactly what i need for the road, but the trail is a whole 'nother story!! I don't know if i told you guys what i did with my last pr. of trail shoes. I bought them and ran in them once (the trail 50k w/ two water crossings) and then returned them!!!! They laughed at me but they were great about returning them!! BTW, way to go signing up for the 5k!!!

Steve - I did all of those races at a very relaxed pace so the recovery was not too bad. I went straight to a baby shower after the last one. It was a little embarassing though. I was a few mins. late and the only seat left was on the floor!!!! I had taken the time to go to the restroom at the host hotel to change into a dress and to wipe the salt lines off my face, but my hair was still in my running ponytail!!

Vic - The trail run sounds like fun...there's one next month about an hour and a half from here and I work the day before. I would have to be on the road by 5AM for packet pick up (ends at 7:15) then race at 8AM. Still mulling it over.
Sunny - The salesperson I spoke to when I bought my TM was ALL about the PAcemasters even though he carried a few other brands. What boiled my decision down to was how it felt to me. He let me run and walk on a couple of the models I was checking out for about 15-20 min each. I went with the Vision T9250 fold up and I love it (my former TM hating DW loves it too).
Dave - Great job in that weather!

So my wife says to me today "Why aren't we doing this?" as she is looking at the computer screen. As it turns out she was checking out the Chicago Distance Classic. So some discussion and logistic figuring later, it seems that it is a STRONG possibility the CDC will be two more WISHers strong. I am committed (to myself) to the Quad Cities Marathon on the 23rd of September, 6 weeks after the half that is the CDC. I think if I walk the CDC (has to be done in 4hrs clock time) then it should be a nice training race before my first full. What do you all think...overdoing it? Between the two I would choose the full in Sept, but if it can be done, then maybe.....

When I finished that 5K on Sat., there was someone standing in front of the clock so I didn't catch my time. At the time it wasn't that important to me, but today I thought..."well what was it?".....I finished my first 5K in 30:57.

Training note...2 miles today outside as it was a beautiful and sunny, mid-40's day. Finished in 19:33.

Catch up with you all tomorrow.

Happy Training!

Hi kids - like Steve, I haven't had much time to post lately, with training my new-hire over the past 2 weeks and saving the world one IP subnet at a time (geek talk, please forgive me).

I encourage everyone possible to do the Chicago run; mainly to keep my DW company and to sammy-slap the guys who try to hit on her
But I can't go along for the trip, and I think y'all will have an awesome time.

I'm really encouraged by everyone's time posts and progress, even in the *freezing snow* like Dave's 5k - what were ya THINKIN'? I've now been able to start running again (1 mile every other day) since my stress fracture has healed up enough. I think I may sign up for the WDW Half...don't tell my wife! Oh. Well, I guess that strategy doesn't work here, eh?

ANYWAY, what really is allowing me to run again is my new pair of shoes. No, I'm not a shoe freak, it's just that these new Brooks Axioms are SUCH the bomb, and I have no pain in my foot when I run now.:cool1: :cool1: And I got a free Brooks tech shirt for tryin' 'em on.
Suh-weeeet!

Best of all, the shoes are lime green. Is that an omen for me to join you all for the WDW festivities or what?

Have a great week, gang.

Jeff

Speaking of shoes....I've been having some shoe issues lately. They're fine for me on the TM but when I run out on the pavement I'm not so fond of them. Just curious if anyone has shoes they love that they'd like to recommend. I'll try anything. I started alternating 2 pairs for my LRs outside to minimize the problems. It's nothing major but I'm just not loving them like I have in the past. I'm also looking out for some different socks, mine keep giving me blisters. Again, this wasn't a problem when I was doing 3-4 miles but after 8-10 it's a problem. Any recommendatons?

Good morning everyone,

Mel - Thanks for the tip about the free tech shirt from Brooks. Unfortunately, even though my running store was listed on the Brooks site they had never been sent any shirts. I called Brooks customer service and explained the situation. After a loooong pause, the rep suggested they could mail me a shirt (now why didn't I think of that ;) ). The only thing better than a tech shirt is a free tech shirt!!

Melissa - I love how you just off-handedly mention a little 90 mile adventure race! "Yeah, gotta go the the store and pick up some milk and bread, oh and maybe run 90+ miles. I hope the bread is fresh." :rotfl:

Stephanie - I grew up about 20 miles from Akron. I looked at the course a while back. I'll probably put that one on my to do list sometime in the next few years.

Kelley - I'm running the full at Frederick. Have you done this event in the past?

Krista - I've been thinkin' for over a week on how to respond to your staring role as a "sorority girl renting a snowcone machine" without getting slapped by either my wife or Steve. All I'll say is I think I saw something similar at a bachelor party one time.

WTG to all the speed demons out there knocking time off!!

I've got a question for all the seasoned marathoners out there. How do you decide on a race pace for your first marathon?

I've been able to do all my training runs all the way up to 15 miles at around an 8:00-8:30 pace but feel pretty darn pooped at the end. Last week I slowed my 16 mile LR down to around a 9:30 pace for most but really felt it in my knees (Colleen, was it you that had the same problem last week?). Finally sped up a bit for the last 4-5 miles and felt better.

Knowing that everyone says 20 miles is "half-way", I don't want to crash and burn because I started too fast; but I don't want to kill myself running the first half with an uncomfortable stride trying to go slower. Any hints?

Thanks to all. Happy training!

What a difference a day makes... After that total stonker 3 miler yesterday, I hopped on the bike today thinking I'd shoot for about an hour ride which would be my longest yet since picking up the sport. Previously had only gone 12 miles and was thoroughly drained afterwards, today I went 20 with no problem at all! Other than the rear end soreness that accompanies 70 min on the bike, I felt like I could have kept going with ease! Had me cocky enough that when I got home I started eyeballing some local tris and cycling events I'd been considering.

One is a sort of duathlon just across the border in AL with a 5k starting at 8am and a 21.4 mile bike race starting at 8:40, which would give me a short break in between on 3/31. Another is the Powerman/Whistlestop Duathlon in Birmingham on 4/15, which is either 5mi run/33 mi bike/5 mi run or half the distances 2.5/16.5/2.5. The former seems too long, the latter too short, and it's quite a drive, so the jury is still out on that one. Week after that on 4/21 is a sprint tri on the FL/AL border, 1/4mi swim, 15mi bike, 4mi run, which seems to be within reach already endurance wise. Then there's the Boll Weevil bike ride in Enterprise, AL on 4/28, where they have 25mi, 100k(62mi), and 100mi options. Again 25 seems too short, and 62 too long, although with some good training that might be a good challenge.

So many choices!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Not too much for me to report, on Monday I ran 5 miles on the TM at 6.3 mph (9:31 mpm). Yesterday I took a rest day. I was planning on swogging (aqua jogging), but I never made it to the pool and it just didn't happen.

One thing I forgot to mention, my princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess:, and I are training for a 5K. They've been saying they want to run one, so I found one for them on May 20th, and I'm doing the couch to 5K training plan with them. The Cool Aunt (who went with us to Disney) is going to train too, the princesses can call her up to chat about training, and then she's going to come out and run it with them. So Sunday was our first day of training, and we did 60 min jog/90 min walk intervals for 20 min. They did great!

OK, I've been really negligent about catching up with everyone. I did want to try to send out some replies.

Mel- fantastic job on your run! That's great. I remember when you were getting frustrated with your times too. I'm so glad to hear things are going better.

Sunny- I wanted to WISH you all the best with everything going on. Know we're here for you. I hope it works out for you to run the Vermont marathon.

Melissa- Whoo hooo, a 24h run for 90 miles! That sounds cool! I just finished reading Dean Karnazes "UltraMarathon Man", and the ultra races sound like such an adventure. Yeah, I definitely want to follow your team's progress. Loved your story about running a 50k with 2 river crossings and then returning your shoes. Man, I'm always timid about running outside of the shoe store when I try on shoes. Maybe I shouldn't worry about that so much.

Krista- I like the new avatar too. Two words for you regarding dinners, crock pot. We don't use ours as much as we would like, but it's great when we do. We come home and dinner is all ready for you. The radio spot went well, no big deal, they just asked some questions about the Learn to Run program I did. It was fun. Give my best to Steve. I'm really excited about the Flying Pig Half - can't wait!

Christa- good luck with all your new clients. You sound swamped. I hope you still get some time to train.

Susan- Good luck on getting into the Peachtree Road Race. I'd like to do that one someday just for the sheer size of it.

Cecilia- Good luck with the half this weekend, and good for you for helping out the Team in Training group again too. How are your legs these days? I remember you saying you had your first injury.

Kiena/disnutt:welcome: to the TEAM!! Great job on your TM workout.

Lily- Good to hear from you, I've been wondering how you have been doing.

Nancy/padisneyfan- Nice job on your 5 mile walk. So glad the snow is melting. It's supposed to warm up here too.

Stephanie- Great job on your 4 miler and great pace. Hope your knee is OK. I must admit I had to break out the ice for my shins again yesterday.

Kristi- Don't worry about your weight, you're putting on muscle remember.

Leana- Great job on your 2 miler, and also on your St. Patrick's Day 10K. You're right, the only person you are competing with is yourself, and it's great that you cut 11 minutes off your 10K time. That's awesome!

Hey Steve! I remember we used to have someone here named Steve. He was a big Steeler fan, and we sometimes called him Iceman. I'm definitely planning on running with you at the Pig, and you've been a big motivator for me trying to gain a little speed. I seem to remember that I had to fall back of you at the marathon at mile 20 after you had run the half marathon the day before, and didn't you run a sub-2 hour half marathon at the Pig last year? That's my only goal, to run a sub-2 hour half. I'd be very happy with that. You did 4 miles at an 8:05 mpm pace!!! Whoa, see that's why I've been having to push my pace lately. How'd you feel on your 13 miler? How long did that take you, an hour?

Vic- Have fun with the trail run. I'd like to do one of those. Can't wait to hear about it.

Cam- That was an AWESOME TM workout. Running pace of 5.4! Incline set at 2.0! That was a great workout.

Andrew- Great job on the 2 miles. Ooooh, you guys are all making me want to come out for the CDC.

Jeff- Good to hear from you. I must admit I had to chuckle at the tag under your screen name "Chimera's DH". Glad you're able to get some running in, and your stress fracture is healing up. That must have been sooooo painful.

Mike/Optimator- Your training times are amazing. I'll defer to the more seasoned marathoners about finding your race pace. It helped me to have a great pace crew of Steve, Melissa, and Colleen.

Matt- Glad you had a good workout after your stonker run. Sounds like you have a lot of fun racing options coming up. Can't wait to hear about them.

OK, have a great day everyone. Happy training.

Krista...I was hoping you guys were close enough to consider Chicago :thumbsup2
We do a lot of stir-fry during the week. I use frozen veggie mixes (BirdsEye has a broccoli, edamame and carrot one that I like) to cut down on prep time. I make Jeff crazy when I cook because I don't measure anything, but roughly, here's a recipe:
Brown 1lb ground beef or turkey in the microwave with minced onion and garlic. Drain on a plate covered with paper towels to remove excess grease (not usually necessary with ground turkey). Add to skillet with one can diced tomatoes, one can water, basil, oregano, parsley, more garlic...and some more garlic. Heat to boiling, add 2 cups instant brown rice. Cover, turn heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes or until rice is tender. Sprinkle with shredded cheese (I use cheddar or mozzarella). Replace cover, remove from heat. Serve when cheese is melted.

Andrew...you and Darcey should come along too since we won't get to see you at WDW for 2008.

Cam...great pace! I'm only up to 5.3 on the TM.

Vic...great pace for you also! Can't wait to hear about your trail run.

BTW, DH forgot to put his pace in for his one mile...10:15

I'm not good at stretching, either before or after a run. I have read not to stretch before due to cold muscles. I do some light calf stretches and I hold for 30 sec. DD's PT had told us you need at least 30 sec for the muscle fibers to actually stretch, but YMMV.

I'm also not good at flying so the Chicago thing is still requiring some thought on my part. And I'm bummed that DH may not be able to go :sad1: But it sounded like fun when Pat did her race report last year...and it would be cool to see some of you before WDW in Jan...decisions, decisions....

Kelley - I'm running the full at Frederick. Have you done this event in the past?

Hi Mike.
No, I've never done this event before. (It will only be my third overall.) The veterans I've spoken to say it's a BEAST with lots of hills. Have you seen the elevation map? http://www.frederickmarathon.org/course/docs/ElevationMap.pdf To me it looks like half flat/half hills for those of you doing the full. For me, doing the half, I certainly hope we're on the 2nd half, not the first. Good luck!

Krista - Some days I think my family would starve if it weren't for the crock pot. I use it at least 3x per week. It really fits our busy lives well and, with the right ingredients, can produce great healthy meals. I cook everything in there: pork tenderloin, meatloaf, pork chops, chicken, eye of round, chili, soup du jour...you name it. When I don't have time for a lot of prep, my basic recipe is meat + salsa + rice. Can't go wrong. HTH.

I had a great 5 mile walk yesterday. First time this winter (since WDW) that I beat a 13:00 pace. Finally! I was starting to think I'd never get back in the 12's.

Have a great day everyone. :-)

 Steve missed me. Not speking ot him again. :snooty: :rotfl: :goodvibes Good to see you! Hope work gets better soon!

Krista - Do you have a crock pot? You can do alittle prep at night or in teh am before work. Turn it on, come home, do a side and you're done/ If you do, I'll give you some of those recipes.

OK, must admit to al ot of skimming. OK, I may have to do CDC with the list we've got.

OK, work has been insane. I spent over 4.5 hours yesterday in meetings or on the phone. Ugh.

We did 50 minutes at 10:38 yesterday. My gosh was it windy on the way back. WIndy and uphill are a bad combination, but we were outside! :D

Good going, Nancy! I won't get to do my distance until Saturday. In between, I'm only doing short sprints and XTraining. I know it's not what the training plan suggests, but it seems to work for me.

Jeanne-- I usually do a sprint on Thursday, but since the weather looks great that day will try for the distance and switch the sprint to Sat. I have things planned for Sat so won't have time to do much. Not sure what Sun weather is. I need to readjust some of my XT as I can't seem to get it in. Hopefully the weather will cooperate from now till Allentown and I can get a schedule that stay the same week to week. I also need to look at getting another pair of sneakers to alternate.

Nancy

I also need to look at getting another pair of sneakers to alternate.

Does anyone else alternate different kinds of running shoes? I have a pair of Brooks Radius and New Balance 10xx that I switch out depending on mood and past use. Some days one feels right and some days it is the other pair.

Carrie - I am with you... Steve missed me too!!! Hmmmphhhhh!

Krista - I have to agree with everyone else... CROCKPOT!!! I love the thing. I make so many meals in it. My favorite is throwing a beef roast in with a can of cream of mushroom soup (only about 1/4 can of water with it) and a bag of lipton onion soup mix (dry). I usually mix the cream soup, water and dry soup together, dump it over the roast and cook it all day. Sometimes it is in there for 10 hours. When I get home, it is cooked well enough to shred up. Usually the soup stuff is juicy enough to make a gravy. Serve it with noodles or potatoes. I will find some other crockpot recipes for you.

I didn't do any training yesterday. I have been so busy. I didn't get home until 8:30 last night. Tonight is gymnastics for dd6, and I told Paul (DH) that he can run the track instead of me. We are planning his first 5K next weekend and he needs all the training he can get. This 5K is called Only Fools Run at Midnight. And it is on March 31/April 1 at Midnight. What a riot!!! As Christa would say... OUT OF CONTROL. The kids are going to the grandparents and we are staying up all night to run. I feel like I am in college!

OK, work is calling. My receptionist/assistant quit on Monday. She was beyond awesome and now I am scrambling to figure out what to do. She was the reason I was able to stay sane when I was out of town so much. We have never had one as good as her. UGHHHH!

Good morning TEAM!!!! Happy Spring!! :flower2: :flower2: :flower2: Hines and I did 4 miles last night in 45:20 (I think, it if not 45:20 then it was 45:something), it was an okay run, not great, but okay, my legs were tired the entire time. We did have some excitement on the run, we were chased by 2 dogs and almost hit by a car full of teenagers who cut a corner too close. Believe me, they got the stink eye! :magnify: I think we are doing another 4 miles tonight, although it sounds like Hines might leave me for a run with Stephen.

Thanks for all the recipes everyone! They all sound awesome! Healthy and fast. I have a question about crock pots though, I do have one, but rarely use it. I leave for work about 7:15-7:20, so it would need to be turned on around 7:00, by the time Stephen and I both get home and run, it's close to or a little after 7:00--is 12 hours in the crock pot too long? Or should I turned it off when I get home from work around 5:45 and then put the pot part in the refrigerator?

Mel--Stephen was talking about the CDC last night and I keep thinking more and more about it. Training for it would be a great way to stay in shape for summer and I would get to see all of my WISH buddies again. And if *things* were happening by then, it would be the very beginning and I think I would be okay to run or at least walk a half marathon. I'd hate to use a vacation day, I get 17, but I have 15 planned already, I'd like to hang on to those 2 in case of anything happening, but I guess we could drive up Friday night and then leave after the half. Although that might be a long, stinky car ride home!! Hmmmmm.....

Pat--This may sound like a crazy question, but how big of a deal is the CDC? Is it a bigger deal than the Chicago marathon in October (La Salle Bank?) or smaller? The only reason I ask is Stephen was seriously thinking about running the one in October, but we decided against it because the hotel rates that weekend were astronomical, I'm wondering if they will be as bad for the CDC.

Carrie--I won't ignore you!!!! :wave2: :wave2: :wave2: Awesome run last night!! I'm dreaming of running in the 10:00's again! Oh well, someday, right? Great pace with the wind and the hills!

Mike/Optimator--You are a riot! :lmao: Let me explain the video, I work for Gold Medal Products Co and we manufacture concession equipment and supplies. Back in December we had our annual Dealer Meeting where all of our dealers from around the world come in for a conference. One of the seminars was looking for rental ideas in uncommon places, so the marketing director made a video of all these places to rent to. A college campus was one of them and even though I am 28, I look like I'm 20, so I played the part of sorority girl. Like, totally, for sure! As an aside, Stephen laughs at me because every where we go, I'm constantly checking any concession equipment to see who manufactured it. Walt Disney World is one of our customers, so the next time you get popcorn or cotton candy there--think of me! popcorn::

Melissa--You went to a baby shower after running a marathon? That's it, I'm officially a wimp! After the marathon, I took an ice bath and then laid on the couch all bundled up in sweats and blankets because I was freezing after said ice bath. Are you getting plenty of rest?

Vic--I must admit, one of the reasons I would like to do a trail run is because I like the shoes. Good luck finding the perfect pair!

Jackie--Is your treadmill set up yet?

Cam--Great run! I have to admit, I play with the speed and incline when I'm bored on the treadmill or elliptical. It does make the time go by faster.

Leana--Cutting 11:00 minutes off your 10K is less than a year is a HUGE deal!!! Congrats!! :cheer2:

Dave--The family 5K sounds like a great idea! I love how you are getting your girls interested in exercising at such a young age. I think that will greatly help them for the rest of their lives. Are the princess:'s coming to the Flying Pig?

Kelley--Great 5 miler!! I'm glad that you are back and posting.

Jeff--The lime green is definitely an omen! We've got you now, you are one of us!!! Congrats on your mile time, that's fantastic! By the way, I cook like your wife; a little of this, a little of that and not much measuring unless I am making something for the first time.

Now I'm off to go and check for crock pot recipes! And maybe the Chicago Distance Classic. ;) I guess I should do some work too, since that's what I am getting paid for!

Krista - I almost forgot!!!! I was trying to catch a women's b-ball score last night and they showed a game in Pittsburgh. Guess who was in the stands? I thought of you. As I got all excited and Scott thought I was nuts, I had to explain your love for HInes and that you named your dog after him. At least he doesn't hink I'm nuts anymore. :p

Krista,
I recommend investing in one of the new fangled crock pots that will automatically turn itself down to a "warm" setting after the proper cook time is complete. Then you have no worries about over-cooking. You can get one on sale for about $50, I think.

Also, don't even think about cooking in a crock pot these days without using the crock pot liner bags. OMG! What a godsend when it's time for clean-up. No burning, soaking or scraping at all. Good luck.

ETA: Sometimes the liner bags are sold in the aisle with ziplocs and alum foil; sometimes they're in the trash bag aisle.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting to the Disboards. I've been reading everyone's posts for a while and have really enjoyed it. You are such an amazingly supportive and encouraging group.

I have signed up to run WDW 2008 Marathon and am so excited about it. I've read all your race reports from this past full and half marathons and I'm incredibly impressed with how well you all did especially considering the weather conditions. I'm glad I've found so many people with first hand knowledge of running WDW. I know as the date approaches I'll have tons of questions specific to the Disney Marathon - such as how do I increase my chances of getting a picture of me running with the castle in the background? It was a picture like that in Runner's World a few years back that inspired me to run WDW one day.

I've been a runner since high school - never particularly speedy, but I've always enjoyed the stress reducing benefits of running. I've run 2 marathons, but they were a looooong time ago (1994). In the past 5 years I haven't had much opportunity to run since I was having kids. Now that the kids are getting older - my son is 5 and I have twin daughters that are 2 - I'm finding a little more time to run. My biggest concern is that my knees, being 13 years older than the last time I ran a marathon, might not be able to handle the distance, not to mention the few extra "baby pounds" I'm carrying.

I have a few races planned to keep me motivated. A 10K in April, a 10 miler in July and half marathon in October. I hope that these will give me a good indication of where I am fitness-wise so I can have reasonable expectations going into the marathon.

That's all for my long-winded intro. I'm really looking forward to "training" with all of you this year.

Cindy:)

Cindy - Welcome to WISH team!!!! You tehink that was long-winded? :rotfl: We all get castle pics. Just smile and look for the photographers all teh way down teh ramop going out for best chance of a good pic. I had not run since HS and started training for my first marathon (06) in MArch 05. I have a few more aches than I used to, but if you take it slow, you will be fine and finish for sure. I don't recommend setting a goal time for your first wone. You just want to make it. I'm sure you can do that if you're currently putting miles on those leags (even if they're slow and not too far yet). Welcome!!!

:welcome: Cindy and any other newbies I missed! This is a total drive-by, but I wanted to say how excited I am to have so many WISHers planning to do the CDC or at least considering it! Mel -- I really hope you'll consider coming. If you do and want to share accommodations, I am sure you will NOT be alone. And I think it is awesome, Jeff, that you are running again and that you love your shoes and that you want Mel to come to Chicago!! I think we all need that to look forward to!

Jen -- so sorry you are dealing with being short one very valuable staff member. I have nightmares about that! Good luck!

Andrew -- That race time is amazing!!!!! Congratulations!
