Wk of Mar 11--WISH Walking/Running Club

Kristen - I'm one of those Galloway people that has been mentioned. My basic level of training per week is 25 miles. 10 on Saturday and 3 4-5 milers during the week. That is my basic level that I keep year around when I'm not training for a marathon.

When the season starts I follow Galloways plan which starts 29 weeks in advance. I don't need to start that early because I'm already at the 10 mile level, but I run with the local group and when they start I start.

Once the season starts I'll run a marathon every 4-6 weeks just to keep at that level.

The main thing is to find one that you like. I use Galloway because we have a large group, 60+ people, that do it together. It has become a social thing. We even run our 10 milers during the off season together.

So Jim, do you just maintain your current level (10 mile LR, 3 shorter runs) until you are on track with the Galloway program? Meaning you'll pick up a few weeks later than everyone else or do you actually regress and start off at the shorter distances and do the program from the very beginning?

Quick post....2 miles on TM 28min...I figured that my first 5K is on Sat and did not want to over do this run so made it short....gotta go...see you all tomorrow.

HELLO EVERYONE!!

I have been majorly AWOL!! It has been my spring break this week and I have spent it working :thumbsup2

Training has been HORRIBLE!! Can't find time, things hurt, I'm too tired!! bla bla bla :sad2: I don't know what is wrong with me but I am frustrated!!:headache:

The Minnie is a little over 6 weeks out and i wanted to have awesome time :yay: !! Life just seems to be getting in the way of my training!!

On the positive:

Leaving at 6 pm (when I get home from work tomorrow) for DISNEY !! Only 2 nights at Coronado Springs, but ANY days at Disney are better than none, and weather is going to be AWESOME

Will be back on the training hard next week, then MINNIE WATCH OUT, HERE I COME!!

I am very sorry for all the catching up I missed out on, congratulations to everyone on good runs, and most of all that BEAUTIFUL BABY, almost makes me want another one!!

Welcome to all the new WISH members.

No training report from me, but I do have a medical update.

Went back and saw the Dr. post surgery. I had removed all the ace bandages and was down to the gauze, because they wrapped it too tight. My foot is still swollen from the wrap. But, the Doc said everything looks good. Once the swelling goes down, I can leave the splint off and put on the brace he gave me and my shoe. Then I can put LIGHT weight on it, while still using the crutches. Keep at that for the next two weeks until my next doc visit.

I have to admit I am extremely pleased and surprised with the way things have turned out so far. While i get some slight stabbing pains occassionally around my foot, it is nothing like i was expecting. Everything I heard and read said the achilles surgery and pain was brutal. But, if my case is the standard, I will defintiely vouch for the Topaz procedure for achilles injuries.
I have more pain from the swelling (from the tight wrap) and the doggone blisters the wrap caused, than from my achilles.

I'm being good and following doc's orders to a "T". He's projected I could probably start training again in July, barring any complications or setbacks.
That works for me! :)

Happy training everyone!

Terri

Terri - fabulous news! :yay:

:welcome: to all our newbies!
I am a Hal Higdon training plan fan myself. I tried John Bingham's plan - although I love his books, I did not like the training plans he offered.

8 days to more Goo. :hyper:
I must up the speed work & xt so I can beat the young college girls to the rail! :rotfl:

Kristin--WELCOME! Great to have you on board! Like Jim and a lot of others here, I don't boost up my mileage into the crazy numbers until "real" training for the marathon begins. I try to stay around 23-25 miles a week until I'm training for a full or a half. I read that Hal Higdon recommends his "trainees" stay around 20-25 miles a week in between training periods so that they can maintain their base running-fitness level, but still be able to boost their mileage when it comes time to train. Now obviously, you can start from a much lower mileage base to begin training for a marathon (most of us here started a lot lower than that the first time), but having the mileage base will really help, mentally and physically, when you begin the one of the 18-20 week programs. So you'll probably already be in really good shape when real training begins. If it were up to me, I would keep your mileage right where it's at and maybe you can work on speedwork through the spring and early summer before you increase the mileage. Just my two cents.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Oh, and by the way, to everyone else: HI!! I know I've been scarce around here and I feel bad for that. Work has been crazy, although it is starting to get back to normal, so I hope I can keep up with my teammates a little more frequently. I really have missed you all!! I haven't had time to read the entire thread from this week, but I definitely will catch up and then I can write a real post. Hope everyone is doing well.

Steve

So Jim, do you just maintain your current level (10 mile LR, 3 shorter runs) until you are on track with the Galloway program? Meaning you'll pick up a few weeks later than everyone else or do you actually regress and start off at the shorter distances and do the program from the very beginning?

I would not regress. I would just switch around and do a 10 miler during the week until the group got up to that level.

Since I'm a newbie here and there seem to be several veteran marathoners on this board, would anybody mind sharing their training plan or links to ones that have worked for you? I've done a ton of research online and I've printed off several training plans but I don't know which one to follow. I'm in decent shape right now and many of them start off with like 4 days of running 3-4 miles a day which is pretty easy for me. I guess I'm just confused about being 10 months out from the big race and not knowing where I should start or what I should be working on. Also, I've seen plans that have 3xweek runs and 4x week runs...how many days a week do you all run while training? Any and all advice is welcome!
Thanks!

WELCOME! I think it is so cool that you are coming fron Japan to run! How cool is it that we all have a running partners all around the world b/c of WISH!
Anywho....This is kinda the plan I use. The guy that has made it out has run like 100 marathons and trains people all the time.
http://tricharlotte.com
Click on the link then go down to tips. This will give different marathons that the Charlotte group is training for, but will show you the way to go up in milage. You have to find what works for you. For my 1st few marathons, I trained up to 24 miles. Most programs only take you to 20 and there are different opinions about that. I feel like, if you have the time (and you do) it is better to go a little higher than 20. I now just keep up my base so I don't have to start over.
If you have questions let me know.

Why does work have to get in the way of running!:confused3 ;)
Lots of PD to you!

Morning all. Today might be a bad day--I woke up to find I had NO COFFEE!!! How is that possible???? And no Diet Coke either--hopefully I can find some tea in the cupboard to get me going.

Heading to my Gliding Harmony class this am and the running clinic this evening. Although, I have to take both kiddos to the clinic b/c DH has to work late. Dsis and I will probably take turns running and babysitting! Was hoping to get 3 miles in, but probably not!

Kristin--How cool that you are in Japan!! Is your DH going to be able to come to WDW with you for the marathon??? I'm also more of a Hal Higdon fan--Bingham's weekday runs are usually based on time rather than distance--I rather like having a set distance to run. Higdon has a "spring training" plan that is the ramp up to the training for the Chicago marathon. It's on his website and I think there is an intermediate and advanced plan as well as the novice. www.halhigdon.com

Steve--good to hear from you!

Angie--Did you ever get your pink hard hat???:cutie: Stinks about work getting in the way of training! Have fun in WDW! You're right, a couple of days is better than no days!

Well, the kiddos will be up in a minute, so I better get going on breakfast. Have a great Thursday all!

Good morning everyone.

Nothing to report this week, except I now have a chest cold. Called the Doc and she gave me some antibiotics, so I'm taking a sick day today. If it isn't one thing, it's another. The toe is stilll a little sore, but pretty much back to normal.

To our new teammates - :welcome:

Terri - Glad to hear you're doing well.

Andrew - Good luck with your 5K.

Steve - Waaaaaaassssssuuuuuuppppppp!?

Stephanie - No caffeine in the house? What's up with that? :confused3

Angie - Sounds like your body is telling you it's tired. Listen to it! Take teh weekend off, try to get some rest. DOn't push too hard at WDW, just have a great time adn start fresh next week!

Terri - So glad that things are going well! Good for you fr being so good about doc's orders!!!!

Steve - Good to hear from you! Hpe life slows down son!

Stephanie - Hope you found some caffeine!

Well, I planned on running when I got home last night. I ogt out of the car and it was :cold: and windy. I don't know what my problem was, it was still in the 40s. I got in the house and listeneed to teh machine and Scott said he was just leaving from giving blood. OK, so he was not going to run. Suddenly, all energy drained out of me and running was the furthest thing from my mind. :( It's colder today, but it doesn't look like rain or snow yet (like the weather people said), so I'll try again tonight. :( My Minnie running mate is going to come kick me in the shins if I don't get back on track. :guilty:

Good Morning Everyone

I've been under the weather and under the workload for too long now, so I'll try to catch up before I disappear again. Right now I have 43 sophomores in front of me taking their corporate finance mid term exam, and it's wonderful to see them do all the work in class instead of me. If only the grading elves would come in tonight and grade the exams for both sections. What a lovely dream.

In sequence from this week:

Bill - Great on finishing the nursery. When is the baby due? Will you have it all ready to go it time?

Mel - Running 3.1, no walking, in 36:06 is very good form. That translates to a 2:35 or so half marathon.

Dave - great splits on your effort. I would recommend you strive to consistency on the splits. I've found the faster intervals take more out of you than the slower intervals let you recover. If you're trying to vary pace, that's great, but training on occasion at a consistent pace helps your body learn to run that pace, what that pace feels like, and how to relax at that pace. Plus it's a very satisfying feeling to be out in a race and nail a bunch of miles in a row within a second or 2 of the others in time.

Stephanie - thanks on the news that I'll receive a post card verifying my entry. I did see today the registration fee check cleared, so at least they have my money.

Kevin - yes, another soccer fan. There really is nothing like a high quality match for atmosphere and pace of the game. In 2 days I'll be at White Hart Lane singing Spurs' songs.

Chester - so now you tell me I should have worked the expo harded at the Disney Marathon. I did see the tables for all the other races and kind of giggled about doing another when I was so focused on the next few days. Registration for Marine Corps opens at 12 noon EDT on May 9, and we'll see if I get it.

Paul - Thanks for sharing your news, congratulations to all of you. Without any doubt I can tell you the greatest day in my life was January 24, 1985, when I received the greatest gift of all, a healthy and loving daughter. Of course the most important day of my life was in October of 1977 when I met a young lady who eventually became my wife and gave me that gift. I have so enjoyed the past 22 years more than I could ever have imagined, and I wish the same for your entire family. It goes so fast, be sure to treasure all of the little victories of your daughter's life.

Minnie - so what is the weather like at Copper? I assume the temps are warming but the snow is still excellent. I haven't skiied the summit in nearly 30 years, being back in summer not winter. Oh well.

Krista - if Stephen feels the shorts are too short, here is a possible solution. I run in splits, which are of a nice length for a 21 year old male who is lean and fast. They are super comfy and light and I love them, but at my age they're a bit too small. My solution is a pair of underarmor compression shorts underneath, they are very light, wick moisture, stop chaffing entirely, and they are about 1 inch longer than the splits. Modestly is maintained and comfort is maximized.

Leana - it's nice to see someone else who has a love/hate relationship with the track. Going back to my comments to Dave, I use the track when I want to know precisely how far I've gone and how fast I am going. I probably do too much of this, going back to my youth and track days, but it allows me to know my pace withing 10 seconds per mile. Yes, the longer runs can get boring, but I actually like doing 10K's on the track now and again. I count up to 16 laps, then count down the last 9, and I always know my pace and how it feels to run that pace. It has always been a benefit in road races.

Cam - speaking of my sophomores, now with 30 minutes left in their exam, how is my friend Howard? Is he hanging on like last fall, and when is he done this spring? Is he also taking some summer courses to knock out the hours? FWIW, the 2nd year is always a lot easier and more fun. The first year is tough, and the workload is pretty extreme.

Toe Nail Loss? - this must be a chick thing, and I've not know any male runners who experienced this problem. And Martha is right, it's her badge of courage. I've always gotten hurt doing fun stuff, basically carried off the field on my shield, and she's gotten hurt walking across the parking lot at a ski resort in Northern Minnesota. This is the first wound she's gotten having fun.

Terri - good prognosis on recovery = nice. When you start back be sure to build slow and easy, giving your body full time to get stronger and cope with the stress. When we come back from injury we typically feel pretty good, and the early training feels so wonderful that we jack up the intensity pretty quickly. It's hard, and I certainly am susceptible to this, but try to build slow. There is lots of time to get strong and fast.

Well now that I've caught up I'll be away for a week again. Best to all. The weather this weekend looks icky up here, so not as many outsider efforts are likely.

Best to all.

Craig

Hey all... I just realized I haven't posted in awhile. I have been swamped and will be leaving today for California. Last night I was able to get in a quick 30 minutes on the indoor track, so today will be a rest day. I fly out at 6pm and don't get to CA until 11pm something. It will be close to 2am my time by the time I get to bed. Then tomorrow night I have a training class to teach and all day Saturday. Then I fly home Sunday. Can you say exhausting????? So that is my cross training for the weekend! :lmao:

:welcome: To all the newbies. We were all newbies at one time, so don't be shy!!!

Carrie - It is cold and yucky here too!!! I hope you get out there to run. I am a wimp too!!!!

Judy - Oh, I hope you get some good weather. Our weather has turn bad, but I will be gone for the weekend. Hopefully Northern CA has better weather for me, tho I doubt I will have time to run.

Stephanie - Sounds like you need some drive through coffee.

Terri - That is fabulous news about your tendon. I hope you are back on the road in July and stronger than ever.

OK, I have to get my stuff all packed up and get my act together!!! Have a great day/weekend all!

So I'm home today nursing this cold thingy that's going around. My nose is stuffed and I'm coughing at night so I can't sleep but worse than that are the chills. I'm constantly cold and chilly. Phthththth (me blowing a raspberry). So I'm grumpy. I won't workout today and I can't tomorrow. But I need to be in the office tomorrow so hopefully this day at home will help. Next workout, if I'm lucky and feeling better will be the weekend. But they are calling for snow tomorrow and icy conditions on saturday. Don't nobody say nothin' to me!

Cruella de Mom: pixiedust: for the leg to heal more quickly! As for the house questions, well, I'm kind of siding with your DH. We renovated our kitchen several years ago and he didn't want to hear the details. I usually tried to narrow it down to a couple choices then nail him to a chair and make him give me an opinion. Please be patient with him. He really means well.

Krista: outdoor runs are sooooo much better than indoor ones. And the first few of the season are just special. Great job on the run!! :thumbsup2

Carrie: :lmao: your story was just too funny!

Leana: outside run in the snow? Way to go! I'd have fallen knowing my luck!

Ashley: I, personally, don't run before it's light in the morning simply b/c I cannot drag my sorry butt out of bed. I don't run after dark b/c we have few sidewalks and they don't tend to be where I want to run. But I do see a lot of people, including women, running when it's dark. Can you find a running partner to go out with you? How about a really big dog? I know of some, but they are too lazy :rotfl:

Cam: good luck on the 5K this weekend!!

Judy: great workout! We'll be hard-pressed to keep up with you at the Minnie!

Nancy: :welcome:

Kristin: :welcome: and no one here will think you are nuts to fly all the way from Japan just to run a marathon! You should hear some of the nutty things we do. Just keep reading the boards and you'll see you are in the right group for that!!

Angie: Oooo, a quick weekend at WDW! That beats any regular weekend at home! Give Pluto a hug for me!

Terri: happy news on the healing front!!

Calcio: aw, you make me teary-eyed! Your DW must be the most wonderful person in the world! You really should bring her something very nice from your week with DD in London/Paris. ;)

I hope everyone is able to get some good workouts in. I'll just be at home, nursing this cold, feeling extra sorry for myself!!

Calcio: aw, you make me teary-eyed! Your DW must be the most wonderful person in the world! You really should bring her something very nice from your week with DD in London/Paris. ;)
:rotfl:

Craig - Good to see you! Glad you're finally feing better! BTW, my dad used to lose toe nails, and I thought we had at lesat one other non-chick here that has. ;) Have a wonderful trip!

Jen - Havea great trip! Hope you can adjust and get some sleep art some point! Bummer, doesn't look like any time for you to get a run in in the nice CA weather. :(

Ugh! How can you go from 79 degrees to 30 degrees in 3 days??? :confused3 I love Ohio weather!!!! Boy has it been an exciting morning in our house. It started with being woken by our security alarm going off at 4:00 this morning! :scared1: The company that monitors our house called and asked if we were okay and then said that they had been getting lots of calls because of the storm we were having, apparently the wind was so strong it was blowing open front doors!! The lady asked if we would like to check the house or if we wanted them to disbatch the police, Stephen went to check things out while I stayed on the phone with the security company. It ended up being the wind, the door in question was the one from the house to the garage, I guess the wind got in the garage and whipped around like a tornado. Once we got all settled down, which was fun with Hines so keyed up from the excitement, our power went off. While Stephen and I were scurrying for a flash light and battery operated clock, it came back on. The power ended up going off 4 times between 4:00 and 6:00. Thankfully every time the power went off, it came right back on. So that was my exciting morning! Now I am sitting at my desk feeling sick to my stomach (no, I'm not pregnant  ), not sure why, maybe lack of sleep? Or maybe it's sympathy pains for Hines, he ate another sock last night so I fully expect to find a nice little surprise in his crate today when I get home. If he doesn't throw up by this evening, I guess I can always take him for a run, that always seems to work. :rotfl2:

Craig--Have a wonderful time on your vacation!!!! And I definitely agree with Martha, that wife of your's sure sounds special, I think she should a big present! Or maybe a little present that is shiny?? ;)

Jen--Safe travels to you too! Man, you just don't stop, do you?

Kristin--:welcome: I love how our group is growing!! How long have you lived in Japan? I think it would be so neat to move to another country, scary, but an experience none the less.

Stephanie--No caffeine??? That is a nightmare!!! I would be loading up the kiddos and heading for a drive-thru!

Carrie--As busy as you have been at work, I think you deserve the break! I hope you spent the night curled up on the couch with a blanket and a good book.

Martha--Feel better soon!! :wizard: That's what I had last week and I started feeling better yesterday. Still congested, but not going through a box of tissues a day. I feel your pain!!!!

Terri--Yay!!! I am so glad you are feeling better and not suffering from any post surgery trauma. It sounds like your achilles is healing nicely.

Angie--Have a great time in WDW!! Take some time to relax!!!

Has anyone heard from Lisa lately? I think her due date is coming up really soon!! :cloud9:

Okay, who else watches American Idol?? Why is Sanjaya still there????? I realize he is a nice boy and all, but he cannot sing!!
