Wk of Jun 25--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I officially registered Phil and I for the marathon this morning. I'm very excited!!

Here are some pics from our vacation and one of the P.U.S.S. (I think it stands for pink ugly single speed, but i haven't confirmed it w/ the bianchi site)

Robb - Welcome!! So glad you’ve joined our group. Thanks for the pacing information. I look forward to any training advice you might have to offer. Your story is truly inspiring.

MelR – Yeah for signing up for WDW!! It just wouldn’t be the same without you. I hope your birthday was magical. I loved the pics of you and the boy. The bike is too sweet.

Mel – I hope the arch supports work for you and you’re able to tape the foot up yourself to save on some funds to the pod. Also, since I struggle with PF, please report on the insoles after you’ve worn them for awhile.

Goofyguy – Congrats on the awesome race finish.

Heather - Glad to hear DD’s party was a success and that she loved the cake. Best of luck on beginning the DL training.

Krista - :rotfl2: :rotfl2: about the sock still being in the road!!

Paul – So glad to hear your dad is improving. Congrats on the 5k and the post-race food sounds so yummy!!

Carrie – I hope the feet are looking better and that the temps take a dive for you soon. I could send a little rain your way...

Maggie – Best of luck for a pain-free treadmill walk today. I’m also taking my two youngest with me to WDW and leaving my 16 yo DS at home due to school. ‘Ohana sounds great for a birthday/post-marathon celebratory dinner!!

Sunny – Please be careful!! I am glad you were able to run, but I am still going to worry about any damage being done by it. I completely understand however about you not being able to take it anymore. When I told my DH about your condition, the first thing he said was “you would go absolutely crazy if you couldn’t run.”

Judy – Congrats on the WW!! :cheer2: That is wonderful. I hope your back is alright. :wizard: Just take it easy until the pain subsides. :rotfl: about the Garmin working in Italy!! It just has to pickup the new satellite signals.

I am still hanging in there with my Marine Corps Marathon training plan. It is raining like crazy in the Northeast today and it is supposed to continue for the entire week. I am just praying I’ll make it outside for my 14 mile run this weekend without getting soggy.

Has anyone ever seen an accupuncturist to treat running issues? I've been struggling with a tight hip or some other muscular issue on my right side for years now that I can't seem to shake. I am seriously considering going to get a few treatments to see if I can get some relief.

Happy training to all this week!!

I started WW on Saturday and lost 4.4 pounds already. I realize the first week is always the best but it sure feels good!

This is probably the dumbest of all stupid questions I ever asked but will my Garmin work in Italy? :confused3 I am assuming so since it is a GLOBAL positioning system, but I thought I'd totally embarrass myself and ask anyway.

Honeibee, you may want to be careful with WW and running. When you get up into the longer distances you requirements for cal's, carbs and potasium may lead you into some trouble. :worried:

As for your Garmin, this will work pretty much anywhere in the world. It only needs to pick up 3 sats. It may ask you when you turn it on for the first time if you have move more than.... miles. Say yes and it will triangleate sats again. This could take upto 5 mins.

Cheers

Oh thank you Rob. I'm only doing 15-20 miles a week right now. And most of that is walking. Quite frankly I think the extra 40 pounds I'm carrying around with me are doing more damage then anything at the moment. If you hang around here long enough, you'll here me complaining about my knees. But that's good advice, I will keep it in mind as I increase my distances. :thumbsup2

Ok here is my first question. Which resort would be the better to stay, French Quater or Riverside. How far away from the Start line are they?

I joined this virtual running club last week and have already learned so much!

A little about myself. I turned 40 in December and decided that I should have a new goal. I have never been a runner and a year ago I would have only run if someone bigger than me was out to get me. I was a long distance swimmer in college however.

I started on the treadmill in February and moved outside in April. I have adapted the Salt Lake Running Company marathon training program to get me started. I have been running about 4 times a week going about 6 miles on each run. On Saturday I graduated to a long nine mile run with a 11:07 pace. It was mostly downhill. It felt good! I have a map of the WDW marathon course so I visualize where I am. Gettin close to Cindy and could have used the fairy godmother's help!

My biggest concerns about the WDW run are the humidity, the time change and training in the Utah winter. I didn't even sweat on Saturday cuz it is so dry here in the desert. Hopefully the wet air won't make me too congested.

I have been married almost 15 years and we have DS 11, DD 7 and DS 4. I'm excited to train with all of you!

TG today was an off day! I was at church from 12:30 pm until 10:00 last night. And sat down for about 15 min of that time to eat a sandwich DH brought me.

Welcome to all our new people.

Sonya-it is more humid in FL than Ut but Jan is considerably less humid than the rest of the year so hopefully it wont be too bad. The weather is anybody's guess. It could be really cold or really warm. You never know in FL & have to pack for all possibilities.

Judy- I just started WW a couple of weeks ago & last weekend they gave me a slide to calculate AP's , well it only goes up to 120 min so you will have to guestimate AP's when doing long runs. I laughed because doing full training I may get another days worth of points ;) Good luck with it!

Paul-I'm glad your dad is getting better

Mike-that is one psycho race  Glad you had fun.

Robb-thanks for sharing your background! Alot of us really relate to the "penguin" and being an "adult onset athlete" :teeth:

Maggie-that's so great you have booked your room , how exciting, its getting close!!!

Judy - A BIG congrats on the WW...I do WW core and love it...to agree with Rob, once you start logging 20 miles in 1 run, the points in WW cannot keep up. THis is why I switched to core, so I can eat as much as I want! Good luck on the back and I know NOTHING about a grimlin (garmin) as I do not use one.
LATER ALL!
Swam 1/2 a mile today.

lol Tiff! I count calories and have a program for my palm that calculates calories burned. I burned 3 days worth for the marathon! ;)

SOnya - I have no upper body strength, swiming would kill me! It was cold enough this year in Jan, that I don't think you'll have a huge problem with humidity, but don't know for sure. The heat can be tough, though. We finished at around 67 and that was wayy hot for me! Just stay hydrated!

Robb - I want to say RIverside is best, but Calcio is the expert on this one. Careful what you offer, we will take you up on advice. :teeth:

Hello Robb

The start of the Marathon course is on the 6 lane road (3 lanes each way) between the OKW/POFQ/POR resorts and the eastern edge of the EPCOT parking lot.

I've spent the night before the marathon at POFQ for the past 2 years (and am doing so again this year), and it takes me less than 10 minutes to get from the lobby of the hotel into the corrals. I hang around in the lobby stretching and getting the last bathroom break before walking out about 5:35.

Port Orleans Riverside is right next door, but farther away from the start. I suspect it's a 5 minute longer walk to get to the starting corrals.

For both resorts you walk out past the guard booth, turn left on the access road (watch for cars) and walk toward Old Key West. There is a bridge over the canal (which has been blocked for car use by Disney Security the last 2 years), turn right over the bridge and the corrals are literally 50 yards in front of you. If you are in Corral A it's right in front of you. If you are in Corral B you're on the other side so you'll need to walk in front of the A's and then double back.

You can't miss it, as once you leave your room you'll hear the music and the DJ's, and see the arc lights in the sky. It's quite a rush, one I greatly enjoy.

Welcome. Your times are quite similar to mine. We may end up running the last 20 miles together once the field shakes out.

!!

Sara, you are already up to 14 miles in your MCM training plan!! What plan are you using? I am kind of messing things up a bit because I am running a half marathon in Calgary, Canada on July 9th, so I ran 11 miles this past weekend and I plan on a 6 mile LR this Saturday to taper for the half on the 9th. I will need a few weeks to recover after the half and then be back up to about 12 or 14 the end of July. I hope I can swing it back into gear. The good thing is that I will be up in Canada for most of July visiting family so I will be able to get my LR's in with less humidity and heat than what I would experience here in NC.

Judy good job on you WW. :thumbsup2

Christa, welcome back!

MelR, great pictures and congratulations to you and Phil for signing up for the marathon. :cheer2:

Robb, I too really find it hard to slow down my LR pace. My DH keeps telling me that I run it too fast. Usually about 10:30 - 10:45. My 10K race pace is about 9:25, 5K pace is about 8:50. Tell me again why my LR pace should be in the 11:00+ range? :confused3

Hi Craig: Was it you that was doing the deep water running last year? I thought it was you that recommended I try it. Did you lose much fitness when you were doing it? I've had to do the deep water running for nearly a month now, and I'm really curious what kind of shape I'll be in when I get back to the roads. I did manage to do a 60 min long deep water run on Saturday.

Hello Dave

Good for you getting a 60 minute deep water run. You're a better man than me.

I have done it, but in 1999, not last year. I broke my tibia length-wise playing soccer (tibial plateau fracture, ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and had 3 long steel screws put in the leg to stabilize and let it heal. As part of my rehab I did a fair amount of deep water running, and I can safely say it was one of the most unpleasant experiences in my athletic life. Legs spinning like crazy, getting fatigued, look at the watch and I've been at it 3 minutes. Then 2 minutes, then ARGH get me out of here.

It is very hard work and excellent training, however. True story, in 1984 just before the US olympic trials for the 1st ever women's marathon, Joan Benoit had a piece of cartlidge come loose inside her knee, locking it completely. 1 week before the trials she has arthoscopic surgery to take out the piece, and she trained all week in the pool, deep water running to hold fitness and let the knee heal. On trials day she zoomed to a comfortable win, and (with regular training) in Los Angeles won the marathon by breaking away from the field at mile 2 or 3 and then ran the entire rest of the race by herself.

So the pool running is great training, hard work and no impact, but to do it you need innards. I don't have them but Joan, and apparently you, do.

As I've told you, at my age of 49, and my weight 30 pounds above my college soccer playing weight, I cannot run every day. I'd just pound everything too much and break down. I do 7 workouts a week, 2 hard lifting sessions, 3 hard biking sessions, and only 2 running sessions. Last week my 5 cardio sessions summed up to 210 minutes, and I'm feeling pretty good right now. As the year progresses I'll lengthen the cardio sessions, hopefully to the point that I'm getting 360 minutes every week of run + bike time during November and December.

It's not ideal, but it did allow me to complete the Goofy in January, 2:05 for the half and 4:47 for the full. The key is every session is done with intensity, but on the bike I really work the quads hard without pounding my calfs and ankles. I'm sure I could do better in the races if I ran more, but I'm also sure I'd get hurt while training. I think I've found a point which allows me to participate and be pleased with my results.

Good luck. I would encourage you to add intense cardio sessions which are non-impact, not-running. You won't get the exact same fitness, but you won't get hurt so much either.

Colleen

The idea of the LR or as I like to call them LSD (Long slow distance) is these runs are to devlop aerobic fitness with your heart rate between 60-70% of max. On these runs you should be able to carry on a conversation very easy. When you are doing you speed/hill/tempo work these workouts are anaerobic. These sessions are aimed at strengthing your muscles.

Hope this helps you with slowing down. It's weird that you need to slow down to speed up, but I have seen this many times.

Calcio, thanks for the info. I sort of mapped it out using Google Earth and FQ is about 1/3 of a mile from the enterence and Riverside is just under a mile.

Cheers

Can I join the training club? DH (Chuck) and I just decided today to do the 2007 WDW half-marathon. :woohoo: This will be the first half-marathon for both of us. DH ran in high school, but that was a long time ago, and he has to get back into it. I've been working out regularly for the last few years, lifting weights and doing cardio, but I've never been a serious runner. I'm really excited, and a bit nervous, about training for the half-marathon.

My workout routine has hit a temporary snag. I fell at work (did I mention I am a bit of a klutz? ) and broke the base of my thumb, so I have a hard cast on my right arm. I'm on week 3 of 5 weeks in the cast - ugh. I've had to really cut back on my cardio workouts (don't want the cast to get sweaty and start stinking :crazy2: ) and I can't do any lifting at all. :sad2: Can't wait to get this cast off so I can get back to working out. :cool1:

I'm looking forward to training with you all!

All registered MCM runners were given an active.com virtual trainer subscription. It is a Jeff Galloway 24 week training program based on anticipated finish time. The weekday runs are dictated by time, as opposed to miles. However, the LR's give a distance range, i.e. 7/1's LR says 12 miles but you can go up to 15 miles depending on how you feel. I usually go by the high range. Also, LR's are only every other week for a while, which may explain the 12-15 mile range this far out. I am also training for the DL 1/2 in September, so I am just strictly sticking with this program to get me prepared for that race also.
Best of luck on your 1/2 marathon on the 9th :cheer2: . I'm sure you'll have no problem jumping back into the training plan for Chicago. Canada should provide the perfect training weather. Enjoy the time with your family! I'll be running the DL 1/2 with DH in September, so it'll be strictly a training run that will require no recovery.

4 miles for me this a.m. :confused3 on 5 hours sleep...I should be dragging around lunchtime. :rolleyes1

Welcome Kaycee (and Chuck)!

Sara - Good luck getting through today. I woudl be dragging sooo bad!

Robb - Thanks for the info! Somehow, my Saturdays are still faster without really trying. I think the weekday just takes too much out of me. :(

I made it to the gym again today. I am on a roll. Today was 30 minutes of xt on the bike and elliptical plus some wl. Had my Starbucks and caught up on this thread, now I am ready to face the day. :)

Welcome to all the new WISH team members! We are so glad that you joined us! :welcome:

This board moves so fast I apologize if I forget anyone:
MelR- Love the photos! P.U.S.S. and it's pink? Someone in Italy has a strange sense of humor!

Judy- Your MIL could come to TX and babysit my DDs, and I could go to Italy with you guys instead. ;)

Carrie- Great job on your running. I will be in Holland, MI in a few weeks. I will send you an e-mail with the details. I wonder if Kevin will still be in Toronto then?

Craig- My DH played soccer in college also and loves the sport. He coaches my DDs on their soccer teams. Luckily they appear to have his athletic ability not mine.

Colleen- Good luck on your 1/2 marathon! We want a full report when you get back.

Dave- Great job on your deep water running. I doubt you will have any trouble when you hit the pavement again. I hope your shins are healing.

Sunny- Take it easy! We look forward to hearing what the neuro says. :wizard: that it's good news.

Better get to work. :badpc:

Good morning TEAM! :sunny:

Today I woke up with a lot of pain, but no more than usual. I see the neurosurgeon tomorrow, I'm hoping he will tell me what I can and can't do. As much pain as this causes me, there is no pain while running. That makes it all the harder to not run.

Sunny - I can only imagine how you must feel. I had only been consistantly active for 6 months before my pain started. You were lightyears ahead of me and I am feeling very much a slug who can't move. I've put the 5lbs I dropped back on and that is adding to the feeling of being a slug. In my case, at this point I can't find an exercise that works without causing more pain within in few hours post. I think I am going to try to hit the pool this week to see if water walking helps.

Maggie - Can you tell me how you get multiple quotes in a reply?

Judy, When I post, I have 2 windows open, one that I read, and the other I use for typing replies. I copy the quote in the first window, go the the second window for reply, click the wrap quote icon, paste the quote. It then enters the quote in the reply box.

As I type that it sounds confusing, but it is really simple and quick. I am sure someone here could explain it better than me. HTH

Sorry to hear about your back pain. Take it easy and ice.

MelR - you and your son are so cute! Great pics.

Maggie – Best of luck for a pain-free treadmill walk today. I’m also taking my two youngest with me to WDW and leaving my 16 yo DS at home due to school. ‘Ohana sounds great for a birthday/post-marathon celebratory dinner!!

Sara - How old are you youngest? My dd15 (16 at the time of the marathon), was dissapointed, but I told her that we could have a girls only trip for a short weekend in May for the Minnie!. It would be our first trip without her brothers since they joined our family and our first trip just she and I. She was VERY excited at the thought. She already has told me she would like to spend one day just strolling around the World showcase without having to worry about her brothers melting down. She enjoys good/interesting food and shopping! Gotta Love her! :thumbsup2

RedSonya - welcome, I can't answer to the humidity vs. dry heat, but I am sure someone here will be able to help.

Good luck. I would encourage you to add intense cardio sessions which are non-impact, not-running. You won't get the exact same fitness, but you won't get hurt so much either.

Craig - thanks for this advice, I know you were talking to Dave, but this is where I may have gone wrong. After being only moderatly active, I started with only impact activities and nothing to break it up, so six months later it hurts to walk. But then I have to wonder if I had a problem before from having such a physical job, and the running just brought the problem to the surface! Once I am back into play, I will absolutely add non impact activites to my week.

Kaycee - Welcome!

Minnie - How is it going?

As for my try at the treadmill yesterday, it didn't really go well. PT last night was miserable. They reevaluated me last night, and my right hip mobility in terrible. Oh and he said I walk funny on the treadmill! :rotfl2: What he actually said was Do you always walk like that? Ofcourse I said like what? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Anyway, apparently I walk with my hips externally rotated quite a bit more than the average person. :confused3

I am keeping at physical therapy 2x week, and will see the MD on the 5th. Until then, I am going to try the pool.

Thanks to all of you, my spirits are still up, and while I am definately out for the CDC half in Aug, I still have high hopes for WDW half.

Have a great day!
Maggie :surfweb:

Greetings all! :sunny:

Today was supposed to be a training day but my back had other ideas. :furious: Memo to all of you 20-somethings....enjoy it while it lasts! Middle age ain't no place for sissies! :guilty:

So...I did nothing today. However, I do have to say DH was WONDERFUL to me this morning. :cloud9: He volunteered to come out and help me with barn chores. He said I looked like I needed help. Hmmmmm....what exactly did he mean by that??? But anyway, that was so very nice of him! So, no training for DH either since he was out helping me when he is usually on the TM.

Hey I lost five pounds so far since Sat morning! :woohoo: Ohhh I can't wait to weigh in at my next meeting!

Tiff - I try to stay away from Flex Points and Activity Points. I know myself and if I give myself an extra inch....well, you know how that goes. :rolleyes2

Christa - 20 miles in one run????? :faint: OK well, in five or so years when I get to that distance I'll worry about it. :lmao:

Craig - Ohhh we are staying at POR and I didn't realize I was so close! That's fabulous! :thumbsup2

Kaycee - :welcome:

Mel - The pics are great! You guys are both so cute! :teeth: The P.U.S.S. is really cool looking, when she's behaving!

Heather - My passport came in the mail the other day so there went my last good excuse for not going on this trip. Thanks for your offer but your kids would never be the same.

Maggie - Oh thanks! Where is that "wrap quite icon"?? I need "DISing For Dummies"! :p

Is Kevin away? I need to write these things down because I always forget. And where's Cam? :confused3 And how's Sunny today??? :flower3: And how's Mel's ductaped foot?? :tiptoe:
