Wk of July 27 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Angie: Glad to hear that your feeling good about your run and that you "found" a good way to get in the miles without killing yourself. Good for you and I'm so excited that you had something "good" to post. Yeah!!:cool1:

Kristi: Nice pics of your son. He could be related to my family with the pale/white skin and red hair - :rotfl: . Looks just like my nephew at his age. (You must own stock in sunscreen.)

-Tracy

Good evening everyone, glad to see some of you got out and worked out today. :thumbsup2

Our bus run today started at Sandy Beach, and instantly climbed up the backside of Koko Head Crater. Got the heart pumping right of of the gates.

When we reached 3 miles, the skies opened up and poured on us. Since it was hot, it was actually a nice relief. My family met us at the 4 mile mark with ice cold water and pretzels. Everyone was thankful for the "Ohassis" (our last name is Oh).

Trudging along in the humidity, we met up with them again at the 10 mile mark for a second helping.

Upon returning to our normal starting point, we only logged 13.25 miles, so I headed for a loop around the zoo, to make it an uneven 14.25 miles. Average pace for the whole day was 9:57 per mile.

Guru Les came down with a cold last Thursday, yet still ran at a 8:00 minute or under pace.:scared1:

We decided we're going to take Tuesday off, for his cold, and my tight tendon in my right foot (slight plantiar fasciitis). Whoo hoo, a rest day!

Came home to rest, but Princess #2 insisted we build a bird feeder for the yard. Got it built, now painting it, and waiting for it to dry. Once the second coat goes on, we can put the finishing touches on it, and hang it in the yard.

Meanwhile, Princess #1 went catfishing at the local reservoir with our friends from Girl Scouts. She came home with this prize, but didn't want to take her picture holding it :

Loretta--Hey girly! Great to see you over here. This is the best bunch of people (next to my mommy friends;) ) you'll ever meet! I've had enough ups and downs in my short running career, and the WISHers have seen me through them all. And just be reassured, that any problem or issue that arises with your training, someone here has probably been in the same boat. Love ya girl, can't wait to run with you in January!

Angie--Can I just say that I'm so very proud of you for taking care of yourself! I know it's super hard for a super speedy gal, like yourself (and don't try to deny it--I've run with you before;) Darn those potty breaks!) to back off the speed to take care of your body! You're gonna be awesome in January and I can't wait to cheer on you and Bobby--I'll take your place scream teaming it at BCV!

Kristi--Love the pic of Zack! Love that he's already collecting the bling!

David--congrats on signing up for the Marathon! And, seriously, 75 miles this week?:worship:

I'm fighting blobdom this weekend. No exercise other than long dog walks. Quick, someone guilt me into going to the gym!

Maura
Didja make it to the gym? I've been in blobdom for longer than I care to figure. My dog Kirby likes it though!

Cam, Congratulations! Ya done good!

Howard, wow man you are putting in some mileage.

Angie, I know it is not what you want to do in your mind pacing wise, but CONGRATULATIONS to you for sticking with it and that it actually felt good. Slow is ok. I hope you can find that out for yourself a lot more if needed.

Kristi, good story and pics of Zack. Way to go Zack!

David, wow 75 miles. Wow! :worship:

Mel, I have heard that Goat speak is not easy. Glad you had a good vaca. Funny that all of FL was in NC.

I've got myself geared to begin again the end of this week. So much to catch up on, but it will all be good. I'm looking for sunshine! I just need to get through this week.

Good morning everyone! I am going to try and keep up here for awhile...:scared:

Kristi: Awesome pics of Zack and what a great job. I am so impressed that he is out there running!! Yay for him and you and Chad as parents too! :woohoo: And whaddaya mean Chad isn't doing the Applefest....

Maura: Blobdom...:lmao: I think this has taken over my life lately too! :rolleyes1

Mel: Goat :lmao: Thank goodness I was just eating PB toast this morning. The hospital does not like it when I turn in monitors with food and/or drink on them!! :rotfl2:

Angie: Yay for finding the courage to slow down and go easy for yourself! This is a great accomplishment and you should be proud. And how nice that your DH shows you how much he really cares about you in so many ways. You are truly a lucky person.

Everyone else: Hi from way up North! I can't possibly catch up at this point but I am going to make an effort to stay caught up! :upsidedow

I have been busily training for the Beach to Beacon 10K here in Maine. It is one of the premier 10K events in the US. There are supposed to be around 6000 runners (for a 10K!!) so it should be interesting. I have a goal of running it in under 1 hour but those hopes are quickly dwindling as my runs have been getting slower and slower in the heat/humidity lately. I am still holding onto my last straw but I learned awhile back that it is not worth it to push on and sometimes it is what it is! I also learned this weekend that my DD13 has the potential to come to WDW in February for the Field Hockey spectacular!!!!!! Yay, another WDW trip, girls only this time!!!!! :woohoo:

Have a great day everyone!! :flower3:

Hi, WISHers!

I haven't posted on the weekly thread for about 2-3 months now, so I'll take a bit of time to get caught up. Sounds like people are getting in some great training, though! even down to little Zack! yay!

Angie...be good to yourself if you have been injured...better to come back a little slower than you hoped and feel good, rather that aggravate your injury and delay recovery even longer.

Sortof sad TDF is over...I was also doing some riding in the LR on the trainer, and lots of couch time, too! But I am glad to have those hours back...I'm pretty sure I have to do laundry today, as there are more workout clothes in the hamper (and on the floor--I'm a slob) than in the dresser.

Update on me: Stopped posting for a while because I was ending a 1.5 year relationship with my then-bf. Even though it was my call, it was still difficult. We are remaining friends, but it's awkward.
Have been increasing training, as Ironman Canada is in 4 weeks. yikes! My run training isn't where I wish it was (it never is--I'll be thrilled with a 12:00 pace on race day), but I feel pretty good on the bike and swim. Got some decent training in 2 weekends ago when I went to watch friends do Ironman Lake Placid...It's so beautiful there, though it rained ALL DAY on race day...felt so bad for the athletes. The weekends before and after that, I trained here in TX and it is so HOT! I actually started my 6 hour bike ride on Saturday at 5 am to try to beat the heat for some of it.
And last night, did a short run at 9 pm and it was still 92 degrees out! Crazy.

OK...I suppose that is it....more travel up until time to go to Canada, so I am going to have to be super motivated to train while out of town, but I think the fear of a terrible race will keep me moving! ;)

Betsy: Nice to see you again!!! Sorry about the personal stuff.:sad2:
Wow, an Ironman - that is totally great!! Keep up with the training and let us know how it goes. Remember Dead Last Finish is better than Dis not start!!

Saw alittle article in the Newpaper and I am sure alot of you know this already but still wanted to post it for those who would find it helpful.

"Pack Right, Dodge Germs on the Airplane"

These are suggestions by the Soap and Detergent Association to take with you in your carry-on.
1. Pillow - Even with a clean cover, someone else has used it before you. Plus, pillows are all to often in short supply on airplanes. An inflatable neck pilow or one of those small, squishy pillows that can be crammed into your carry-on tate is a better choice thatn your flight attendant's offering.
2. Hand Wipes - To clean your hands and wipe off the tray table, arm rest areas and anything else you can think off.
3. Hand Gel - Perfect for when there isn't a comvenient place to dispose of wipes. Be aware the current carry-on regulations limits the size to three ounces.
4. Bottled Water - Pick up a bottle after you pass through the security gates. It's easier to be prepared than to wait for the flight attendants to bring beverages. Drinking plenty of water will keep you from getting dehydrated - and is better for you than caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can aggravate dehydration and jet lag. You can also take empty water bottles and then fill up at a water fountain or ask the flight attendant to fill it up.

Tracy

Angie- Good luck with the recovery. Don't push yourself too hard, that'll just make it take longer.

Kristi- That sounds like a great program Zack was in. I hope he enjoyed it. Are you guys going to keep him running with you? That's great that he's already enjoying it at such a young age. (I was part of a similar type of program from age 8-10, but it also had a competitive aspect).

This morning I slept in about an hour from when I normally get up to run. Big mistake. It was already ridiculously hot and humid when I left just after 8:30. ugh. I only made it about 2 miles (18 minutes ish plus the 5 minute warm up). So I'll be on the dreadmill or try again later tonight.

This week I won't have a race. (First week in a while), but the next week I have a night time race, so I probably need to get back used to running in the evenings anyway.

Best,
Jennifer

Steve & Christa: CONGRATULATIONS!!!! HOLY COW HE'S CUTE. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY:love:
Mel: We love the mountains for vac too, we usually go to TN though, sounds like you had a lot of fun!!!I tried to run when we were there 2 years a go, I have such respect for those who train on hills!!!!
Kristi: Soooooo cute - way to go Zack!!!
Howard: You are really rocking out the miles, amazing what we can do when school is out of the way. Sorry you didn't get the full 11.
Can I also mention how sweet you are being so supportive of Cam, believe me I know what a difference it makes.
Maura: I hope you made it to the gym
Vic: Hope your short trip went well.
Allyson: Glad you got out there, way to go on longest training run yet!!! :cool1:
Stephanie: How did your sister do? I am getting to the point where I rather run on the treadmill because the heat and humidity is unbearable, sucks the LIFE out of me!! :scared1:
Tracy: AWESOME JOB!!! Not only the heat and humidity but the thunder and lightning, that's great. :worship:
Terri: Tour de living room :rotfl: Good job on the 5k and mixing it up, I need to learn how to do that.
Zalansky: :welcome: We are so glad you are here.
David: Can't wait to see you in January.
Jeff: What a busy day!!!! Amazing, you are amazing. Thanks for the inspiration.
Lily: Thank you
Lisa: I hope you get to have that extra trip to WDW and could you PLEAAAASSSE rub off some of that good attitude about your race on me. Thanks for the inspiration and positive attitude. Why do we have to learn the hard way most of the time.:confused3
Betsy:  on the breakup!!!! :pixiedust: for finding the motivation to train while out of town
Jennifer: The heat seems to be a problem for everyone huh? I hope you get back out there later.
Carrie: Not a good week for the week before your first tri but it looks like you did great!!!

OK so pump and spinning tonight at gym, maybe some core too. Not running again until Wednesday, slow and steady wins the race, RIGHT!? (or is that finish? or does it matter)

Carrie: Nice Race Report!!! Sounds like it was a good race, good volunteers and a good experience.

Anige: Slow and steady, slow and steady.....

Good afternoon!

Still trying to catch up but wanted to pop in and say HI!!

Today is rest day for me. 8 mile walk Sat and 30 mile bike yesterday = day off for Liz.

The Sat walk turned into a self realization of sorts. I've posted the whole tale here if interested. http://twofools1.blogspot.com/ Think things are going to be a little better going forward with training.

Sunday event ride was nice. Good weather (sun actually ducked behind low clouds for a while), nice course, great markings and nice folks. Finish line food/drink could've been more like the rest area but over all a good event and one we'd do again. Next year it'll be the 62 mile course.

Ok, back to catching up....

YAY Carrie, way to go on your triathlon!!! :cheer2:

You overachiever, you ran more than what was required. Good going.

Jennifer - Way belated congrats on your 3rd place in your race. That is aweseome!

Angie - I am so proud of you for doing what you need to do, especially when it's so hard. :grouphug: I really think it can be harder to hold yourself back that to do the race or get mortivated.

Kristi - Huge congrats to Zack! Too cool!

Betsy - :grouphug: SOs orry thigns have been rough on you. Eternally grateful that you've been around lately for advice on teh Tri thread.

Apologies to all I've missed. :flower3:

Hello everyone!

I've been home for a week (leaving beautiful and COOL Maine for the heat and humidity of Philadelphia), but have not gotten back in the groove of posting here. I've been lurking from time to time, and it's great to hear from all of you.

My training was off and on during my vacation weeks, but I am back in the groove now that I'm home. I need to be better with adding cross-training, but I have been able to get all my running in. That's good since my first half-marathon is only 7 weeks away! :scared1: I'm starting to really need to ramp up the mileage with my long runs - my next two are a 6-miler and a 7-miler which will be my longest distances ever. I feel a little nervous, but ready. I'll be sure to check back in here to share how they go.

Anyway, I think I need to get more serious about adding some cross-training, but so far I have not made myself add another day or two of activity. I think what I need is some accountability, so I am committing to 1/2 hour of Pilates today, and then a one-hour class on Wednesday. I'll post later to let you know that I did that!

Hello Team!

Jeff - I think you should email Moobella and tell them they need a portable machine to have at the end of the races! YUM! Oh...I did finally get in my LR yesterday...7.75 miles...and I didn't even get any ice cream! Waaahhh!

Tracy - WTG on the 12 miler! I only wish I was that far along in my training!

Betsy - WOW! An Ironman! I am soooo impressed! Did you have to qualify for that?

Carrie - Great race report! (I posted there too...) Welcome to triathletehood!

Zalansky - Welcome to the team!

AFM - Did 7.75 miles last night and I am sore today. Must be pay back for ditching the running group to run by myself! But really...I did it for their own good...I am so slow, I am sure they didn't want to just wait around for me to finish my long run!

Michelle,

You need to run with faster paced people, because it will make you faster. Believe me, it works. :thumbsup2

Michelle:Oreo cupcakes: I used the "Lightning Cake" recipe from Joy of Cooking then crushed some oreos and mixed them in. Buttercream icing on top. So bad and yet tastes so good... And a Fudgesicle definitely counts as dairy! (at least in my book!) The cake is beautiful. What was in it? And Jeff --nothing is "too pretty to eat" ha!

Jeff:Gotta say I love your running group and their motto! How bout you bring one of those machines to the finish line??? :) Nice fish!

Duckie:What topics do you have class on in your "teacher camp"?

Tracy: Bummer on the bike--shopping time!

Scott: Good to have you back but YIKES! on the toe. PD :wizard: for it.

Mel: Glad you're back! Any pics from the trip?

Kristi: FitnessU looks like fun. What a great opportunity!

Kira: Philly humid??? You should come visit the sauna down here! Where is your 1/2?

popcorn::

I tried to decorate my cupcakes with lambs, but then I switched over to pigs instead. They turned out cute--and yummy! I managed to make another batch of rock candy rather than fondant but it was edible at least. Then I created a salvageable batch (completely botched but it'll do!). Fourth times the charm?:confused3 I was singing "Stick-to-it-ivity! If you've got that stuff called Stick-to-it-ivity! You're going to do all right".

I got in a nice short LR (8 miles) on Friday and was going to take Saturday as a nice rest day. Nice rest day--right! I had the 'Family and Consumer Science' (Home Ec) Praxis test at 7:30 at one of the local magnet high schools. Hopefully, I'll get my certification in that. Then I went over to my boyfriend's house. His parents came down to celebrate his b-day and we went out for chinese. Still a nice restful day... Then I went back over to the school to take my English Comp Pedagogy test (essays instead of multiple choice). The line always builds up around the building until they start letting us in so I figured I'd walk around the front grounds to do something (not to mention it was nice and shady under the oak trees vs hot in line). So la dee da I was walking along...passed a lady walking her dog...guy taking a nap on the bench...three girls sitting on the curb...and BAM! Something slams into my head. I kinda faded then I felt people behind me and I was being dragged by my purse along the ground. The girls were mugging me!!! My only thought was "scream like mad so someone hears you". And that I did. All of a sudden I looked up and the girls were out in front of me running like mad from two police officers!!!!!! They took down two of the girls, though the third got away. Ends up the officers were across the [side] street monitoring a wedding at a restaurant. They were in an unmarked car and thought the girls were suspicious looking. They saw the whole thing! :) They said though they were 40 yards away it sounded like a shotgun going off when the girl punched me. I have a nice bruise on my temple and on my arm and am rather sore but otherwise alright. I still went and took my test, but phew it was definitely NOT a rest day!

One more week of school then a short summer hiatus...:upsidedow

Claire How scary for you! I hope you're okay and just so glad that the police were there to see everything and help out.

I did not make it to the gym yesterday--proceed with the wet noodles, Tracy! And today, I overslept. But I decided to leave work early and go this afternoon. Finally! 40 miutes of riding, 20 minutes of abs and stuff (that's a technical term).

Maura
