For some reason I can not get past the 3.5 mile mark. I get discouraged on the TM because it seems it takes forever and I don't go as fast as I can outside. I seriously think I need to turn the display off so I don't focus on the distance and the time. Does anyone else have that problem? Where the pace on the TM is slower then actual road running pace?
I don't know much about most things, but I think I can humbly offer some suggestions here...
Yes, my treadmill, which is supposedly calibrated and extremely accurate, always has me taking longer to cover the same distance on it than the time I require "on the ground." I think of this as a bonus, because if I can beat the sweeper on the TM, I can definitely beat him/her come race day.
Most years, I train for the Disney marathon (or Goofy) almost exclusively on the treadmill except for 4 or 5 carefully scheduled races in September, October, November, and December that I use to "reality check" my pace. I do several things to counter the boredom -- cover the display with a towel (so I can peek at it when I want but not have it in my face all the way), watch a DVD (or two or three) I really want to see (my treadmill is at home), bury myself in the music on my iPod, or do occasional workouts in which I focus on time (run/walk 2 hours)
OR distance (run/walk 10 miles) -- not
both, which means I essentially disregard my pace.
After many years (since 1998) of doing this, I have to say the only real complaint I have with my treadmill workouts is I know they do not condition me to weather extremes, but as most of my marathons are Fall or moderate Winter, temps are rarely a problem. (Last year's sweltering Disney being a notable exception.)
Don't give up -- I can assure you that you are not alone. You're facing problems all TM users face. Just keep mixing up workouts and trying different distractions -- a lot of being happy on the treadmill is
deciding to be happy on the treadmill.
Happy (rubber) trails!
