Wk of Jul 23--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Sunny - I love the siggy pics they are great! Sorry about your continued pain!

Today I did a 20 mile ride and a 9.1 mile run. We did r/w intervals (which i've never done on purpose) and it was great! I still haven't actually signed up for the 1/2 ironman and I'm not sure I can do it given the heat! My friend and I are thinking that since we would just be doing the course and not racing, we may just put on our own 1/2 ironman and do it here. We would get our husbands to be our aid stations. It should be pretty easy to plan a course as we have a lake and I think I alread have the run figured out. Does that sound totally silly? It would be a ton cheaper as the race is 130 and then there is the travel w/ boy and trhe hotel!!

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

Rest day for me yesterday that I spent finishing painting the deck. Whoo, that was some x-training.

Mel/Chimera- Yup, you and me are side-by-side right now! Good job on the 14 mpm pace. So when's your 20th reunion?

Cam- Great job with your 5K!! :cool1: :cool1:. 14:18 mpm pace is awesome! I'd take that right now. WTG on the steady improvement. :thumbsup2 I agree with Anne, sounds like your hip is getting a little better.

Sunny- I love the designs for Mickey and Donald. I hope you weren't sitting too long to make them. How's your back doing? Oh shoot, I just read it's worse than ever. I'm so sorry. I hope your Doctor's appointment tomorrow helps. :wizard: :wizard:

Helen- Here's some PD :wizard: :wizard: on dealing with the emptiness of no pet. Hang in there. Craig has a good point about giving a shelter a try.

Tiffany- Great job on your training. I'll leave the advice on the LR to the experts here.

Paul- Awesome 14 mile LR. WTG!!

Bekah- Your tubing sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck on the swimming today.

MelR- Great bike/run workout. Hey, maybe you can invite your fellow WISHers down for your 1/2 ironman.

Amy- Are you out there? Where have you been girl? How's your training going. Everytime you post it sounds like you are doing really well.

OK, off to do my leg exercises. I have an appointment with my orthopod today. We'll see if he has anything different to say... I'm not expecting too much.

COngrats to Cam and jodi!!!! :cheer2:

jodi - Thanks for the cool pics!! Looked a little steamy there!

cam - I'm guessing that SuperHoward will be better after teh Goofy athan Scott and I after teh full last year. I'm also guessing tha toyu may be similar to how we were. ;) That being said, walking to dinner should still be an option, the more you walk, teh ebtter you'll feel. However, leave plenty of time. ;)

Mel - I know what you mean about lack of races. There's 10K this Satruday that is tempting me, but I keep hearing about "5 MIle Hill" . Hmmm, maybe not.

Helen - :grouphug: It takes so long ot get over our furbabies. Being home alone all day must make it worse. :wizard: that you can find a new kitty soon!

Sunny - Thanks for the clippie!

Bekah - Wow, you're going all out. I got tired reading about your work outs!

Krista - Bummer about your car. I lost a timing chain once, but my little escort had over 160,000 miles on it. That shoudl not have happened at 50,000!

Sorry, I know I missed abunch of you!!!! Being busy at work last week along with being a slacker has me way behind adn I must admit to only skimming.

We set out to do 5 Saturday adn I felt great in teh begininng. We flew. I am paranoid that I will not havea nythign left at the end and I think that really slows me down, so I went with it. Well, the hill sand the heat hit about half-way through and life got tough. However, I ended up adding too much distance on, we were not at our home path, and I over ocrrected. I was feeling lousy with a half mile to go and told Scott I would likely stop at 5 and walk home (mom and dad's). Well, I hit a patch of shade and decided to go all the way. Even knowing tha tI had a good half mile hill. Poor Scott is not as familiar with the area and did not realize we had to run the whole hill. :teeth: I ended up at 5.85. Had I knwo I would have been tha tclose, would have goen fo r6.

However, I do not see us running tha tcourse again. Ther is a lot of time on shoulders adn my knee started to hurt on the last hill. My hip hurt a bit later in the day too. This is close to where I screwed up my hip last year. So, we will be going to the local park from now on. They have an 8-mile bike path. It's wayyy hilly, but I do not want ot get hurt again!

Fun update! We had my Aunt's 70th b-day party on Saturday. We had cousins in from CA, TX, KY, and FL. Now, my cousin from FL watched us at the marathon. When she arrived, not being a mornign person, she askewd, "SO, we have to get up by like 6 tomorrow?"

I sheepishly replied, "I htink you need to catch teh bus by 5:00."

She took it in stride and I guess got up just fine at 4 am. She left right after the race when my parents did , thgouh. Throough the grapevine (I'm not oeverly close with my cousins, tehy are all older than me and most of them are out of state), anyway, I heard that she had a great time, althuogh she had to take a nap at a rest area on the way home. :p

When we saw her at the party, she said, "I hear you guys are gonna' run again next year. I'll have to plan it better so that I can stay and do the parks with you some next year." :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

So, in addition to all the other wonderful things teh marathon has done for me, it's given me a new firendship with my cousin. How cool is that?

I've copied this over from another thread.

I'm pretty new to this forum, but I was hoping I could get some good advice from my fellow runners.
I've never run in a marathon, or a 1/2M. I, and my son, signed up for the Disney 1/2M in January. In training, I've worked up to where my long run this past weekend was 10 miles on a TM (rained all day). (I was a little sore in my shins the next day, but nothing significant.) I kind of wish I had gone for the gusto and signed up for the full M, but it'll be nice to run the 1/2M with my son.

Anyway, I just came across information for a full marathon in Akron the last weekend in September. It looks pretty interesting. I called the number for the running shop that organizes the training for the marathon, and spoke with a girl there. I explained where I was in my training (I told here my long run was up to 8 miles, since at that time, it was only up to 8 miles). She told me that I probably didn't have enough time to get ready for the Akron marathon at this point. The training team's long runs are up to 14 miles, and since I was behind that, I might be better served to sign up for the 1/2M the following weekend.

I know most of you don't know me at all, and a few know me a little, but I'd still like your advice. I'm new to this running game, and I've only run to get in shape for other sports. I've been running fairly regularly to get ready for the Disney 1/2, but am intrigued to try a full. I don't want to get in over my head though. My thinking is that if I can run 10 miles straight (at about a 10min/m pace) now, I can work that up somewhat over the next 2 months. Then on marathon day, by mixing running and walking, I should be able to complete the marathon. Am I out in left field, or what?

Good morning everyone! :sunny: I had a total stonker run yesterday, I started outside, but after 1.65 miles, I came in because the heat and humidity were too much. I did another 1.60 miles on the treadmill, I intended on doing 2 more miles on the treadmill, but the shorts I was wearing (my last clean pair) are the New Balance ones that I HATE, I was very uncomfortable. Needless to say, I did laundry last night. :thumbsup2 Oh my gosh, when I got to work this morning, I made copies of my marathon training program and then I went through my calendar and wrote my long runs out--I think I'm going to throw up!! How in the world am I going to be able to do this??

Jodi--Great job on your 5K! I love running 5K's, but for some reason I haven't done any this summer. I'm doing the Ladies Distance Classic 5K with my Mom on Aug. 5th, but that might be the only one as official training starts Aug 21 and my shortest run is 5 miles. Sorry things have been so crazy at work lately, hopefully you can still make time to run and cross train--I feel your pain! Sometimes I think I should quit my job so I have time to train for the marathon. :teeth:

Sunny--Your cliparts are great! I really like the "new and improved" Mickey. Sorry that you are having problems with your back. :wizard: that the ns can find something tomorrow.

Mel--Thanks for the birthday wishes! I know what you mean about finding races, there just aren't that many going on here either. Of course they start up again in the fall, but I really can't do them because it messes up my long runs. I just realized that the Race for the Taste is week 7 in my training plan and I have a taper week of 6 miles then--that works out perfectly! How's your daughter doing? Oh, and 45 days until the NFL season officially kicks off!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Jackie--Sounds like you had a great trip. I'd love to go to California, but right now every vacation we take is to WDW--just can't justify spending our time elsewhere.

Helen-- :grouphug: :grouphug: I know how sad you are right now. I think you need to check into adopting a kitty now, if you can.

Cam--Great job on your 5K. I think it's hilarious that you email Howard reminders or helpers for your birthday--that way you know you are getting what you want, right? Stephen's birthday is Aug. 4, but I'm happy to say that I'm finished shopping for him already, so he better not email me any hints. :p

Paul--Great job on your 14 miler!

Dave--Thanks for posting about Le Cellier on Friday, your post reminded me to make our ADR's. Thankfully we got everything we wanted. To me, the best part of WDW is the food!! How are your shins doing? Any better?

Melissa--You kill me! A 20 mile ride and 9 mile run? WOW!!!!! Your 1/2 Ironman idea doesn't sound silly at all--just make sure you make up a couple of t-shirsts so you and your friend can wear them proudly.

Tiff--Not that I'm an expert in any means, but I usually do my long runs about 1 minute slower than my tempo runs. I just checked "Marathoning for Mortals" and it said that long runs and long walks should be at a "conversational pace" and your heart rate should be between 60-75%.

Carrie--That's cool about your cousin. Sorry that your run wasn't that great, but I'm proud of you for hanging in there.

Hey everyone... Just wanted to let you know that I am taking it easy with my running until I see the doctor next week. Saturday I did get up early and it was cool out yet so I did a 4 mile wog. It was much easier for me than the Thursday one. I also had a water bottle with me and drank several times on the route. My breathing was still heavy, but my chest didn't hurt.

Congrats to all the racers this past weekend!!!

Denny - you might could pull it off if you were able to come up w/ a good training schedule b/4 then. I was looking at the calendar you could try to do some LR's gradually building up to 20 3 weeks b/4. You might check Hal Higdon's site and see if you could modify his program. There is also a 16 week program that starts w/ 10 mile LR that was in runner's world last year. You could probably easily modify it as it had 2 20 mile long runs. PM me later if you have trouble finding it and I'll try to dig it up and send you the info. I would caution you to be really careful b/c if you do decide to squeeze all this in in a short time, you could increase your likelyhood of injury and then doing the marathon wouldn't be worth it anyway. Good luck w/ your decision.

Denny - As you clarified on the other thread that you would to r/w, I definitely think you could do it. Did you start witha r/w, I can't recall? I actually ahve a harder time with r/w than just r, but if you can do it, go for it!

Thanks for all the encouragment and praise, everyone! I really appreciate that you guys who are doing so much more than I am are so supportive! :grouphug:

That being said, my plan called for a 50 minute walk today, so I got up early and went to the gym to use the TM. (I had the new Oprah magazine and great music on my ipod, so I felt like I wasn't working so hard.) 3.4 miles in 50 mins is about 14:42 pace, I think.

Plan calls for cross-training tomorrow, but a friend will be in town (to take DD shopping for dorm stuff), so I may head to the gym in the morning to ride a bike to get it over with early and easily.

Denny -- I think your approach sounds reasonable and well thought out. It certainly sounds like you are in shape to add more distance. I think you will be fine. Oh, and :welcome:

Jackie -- sounds like your whirlwind trip was wonderful!

Melissa -- I think the army should use you in their ads -- "she does more in one day than most of us do in our entire lives!" :lovestruc

Krista -- :thumbsup2 on the laundry!

Oh, that reminds me. You guys want to hear something outrageously funny? DH does all the laundry (I know, I'm totally spoiled!) and I was lecturing him on not using fabric softener or dryer sheets (and to dry for that matter) on our wicking running clothes (although as I've lost some upper body fluff, his mistakenly drying my undergarments has prevented me from having to buy the next size smaller! ;) ). So, on Saturday we actually bought a second hamper! for our running clothes. Isn't that funny? :rotfl:

Carrie - That route sounds grueling. I am so glad you aren't going to do it again. DO NOT take any chances with your hip! :goodvibes: So glad your cousin loved the experience enough to plan to be at marathon weekend again!

Dave -- Good luck with the orthopod today. I am glad you are doing your exercises.

Paul -- AWESOME 1/2 marathon split! Just think of where you'll be two months from now!

Beka -- Geez, does the tubing count for cross-training?

MelR-- I think a self-created ironman is a great idea! :yay: I especially like the part where DHs are the aid stations. :cloud9:

Tiff -- I have to admit that I am not good about slowing my pace for the LWs. I am always working at race pace or faster so that I can really "feel" what that pace is supposed to be. I am never far enough ahead of a sweeper pace to take a chance on slowing it down a bit. AND I figure the crowds and weaving in and out also slow me down in the race situation, so I want to be able to go as fast as possible, given the opportunity.

More later everyone (I started this over an hour ago and haven't had time to finish/post).

Carrie,
All of my training has been run only. For a marathon, I would envision running, I don't know, maybe 15 miles, walking a mile or so, running another 5, walking, etc.

Thanks again, I really do value your thoughts on this.

Sunny -- I am worried about you, sweetie! Please take it easy. I really hope your appt with the doctor tomorrow brings you meaningful and productive information and a plan. pixiedust:

Sunny - great job on the graphics. Could you re-post the goofy one so that I may use it in my sig?

Cut and paste the line that begins with "{" and just replace the "{" with a "["

Cam-- don't worry about me pushing too hard. It's past that point now. I am lucky to limp around the house :sad2: Sciatica in both legs now. And to top it off, I got terrible vertigo during the MRI at 2AM Friday and it didn't go away! I went to see a dr at 4PM Friday. He told me is benign vertigo and usually lasts 3-5 days. He gave me a script but the script knocks me out. But fortunately, its down to just occasional waves at this point. What next? I can't help but feel someone's trying to get my attention. Its just not probable to have a series of apparently random illnesses/injuries string across 4 months. :confused3

And as much as I want time off from work, this is not the way I had hoped for. I'm scared to death that my projects will suffer and people are beginning to question what's up with me. I feel useless and I hate not having any understanding of what's going on with my back or how long it will last. At times depression sets in pretty hard. That's when I avoid posting! My complaining is bad enough without the "woe is me" wimpering.

Sunny

Hi all!!!

OK... here we go, playing catch up a bit...

Cecilia-- WELCOME!!

Jodi-- Congrats on the 5K!! :thumbsup2

Cam-- Woohoo!!! Great 5K!! :thumbsup2 Pathetic?? :confused3 I think NOT!!

Tiff-- With my long runs, I just try to finish them :rotfl: I understand where they are coming from with the whole going slower idea, but I tend to think that happens naturally anyway when you are running long distances. I tend to run mine at roughly race pace or even a bit faster, depending on how I feel. Indeed, I am not the model runner :)

Denny-- Welcome!! I read through your post (twice) and I kind of have mixed feelings on what I'm going to say here. I think that if we were going to flip this scenario: The Akron Half and Disney Full-- I'd be all over it. And I think you could insert the half into your training schedule with no problem. Trying to pull off the full would require an incredible mileage build over the next five weeks in order to give yourself time enough to taper before the race. The concern I have is that it all of a sudden becomes exponentially easier to hurt yourself and/or burnout when your mileage increases that fast... especially for a new runner. I'm not saying it's impossible or that you shouldn't..... I'm just advising some serious thought and caution. It sounds like your training so far is going very very well! :thumbsup2

Denny-- Just read your most recent post- are you following any particular program out there for training? Just curious since those running intervals are very long vs the walking intervals.

I can't believe that I finally feel back in the saddle with my training all of a sudden. Here is everything I hadn't posted:

Friday: Crosstraining and lifting
Saturday: 3 miles in 28:06 (9:18/mile). This felt tough through the middle, but I was thrilled with the pace. Lifting in the gym as well.
Sunday: 6 miles in 55:41 (9:16/mile). Whoa! I wanted to try a "Goofy" training weekend, just to see what it felt like and it really wasn't that bad at all. This was my longest run since the race in January (I know, slacker) and it was much tougher mentally than physically. At the end of a 21 mile week, no less.
Monday: 2 miles in 18:58 (9:29/mile). OK, so that's what running on tired legs feels like!! :teeth: The first mile was dreadful. I just couldn't "go." I started to feel better, but I got a sneaking suspicion that this is more what the Goofy will feel like. :teeth: Lifting to come this afternoon.

I'm so sorry to everyone I missed.

Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Hi everybody. I'm new to this thread. Can I join you?

I'm a walker. My first event ever will be the Baltimore Half on October 14. I'm currently training according to this schedule: http://walking.about.com/cs/marathontraining/l/blhalfmarathon.htm This is training week 5 leading up to the Baltimore event.

I've also registered for the WDW Half. Very excited and a bit nervous.

Currently my times average about 13:51 per mile. But, since my longest walk thus far has only been 7 miles, I'm not sure if I'll be able to maintain that pace throughout the race. Will try, though.

Cheers,

Kevin - Wow, you really are back in the saddle again! Way to go!! Can I interest you in a 10 K Saturday? You and Scott could likely take off together. ;) I have a call in to see if there are pacing requirements, as Scott does not want to be last (although, he's only be second to last runnign with me). If it's not less than 12, we'll go.

Kelley - Welcome!!! If you're running, walking, wogging, swogging, or any such thing, everyone's welcome!

Heather - Are you back yet? We had the best time last weekend!!!!!

I ran my very first race today! Strange to have a race on a Monday morning in the middle of July but it is a weird state holiday in Utah. I did the 10K, 58:39! I was very pleased with that since I didn't really know how to race. My hip is still giving me some problems so my training has been somewhat minimal with running very short distances, a lot in the pool and eliptical and a little TM. It's nice to finally have some race experience behind me. I'm registered for a half in a few weeks so hopefully that will go well. I'm getting really excited for WDW.

Great job RedSonya! :cool1: Now that you have the first one under your belt you will be unstoppable!

Sorry for the drive by but I am at work and have to sneek in for a quick fix. I didn't post over the weekend because of a lot of work on the house (install new ceiling fan, recessed lights, rewiring, painting and a bunch of other small stuff) and just never logged back in due to being too tired. I did get out on Saturday for 14 miles and then ran 4.5 yesterday between jobs. I registered for two races this coming weekend: on Saturday there is a 5 miler I will do with a friend and then Sunday there is a 10 mile trail race I will be doing with the running club. I guess this will be my Max (you know, Goofy's son) racing weekend.

PD to all in need, keep training and I hope I can sneek in again sometime during the week. Again, sorry for the drive by  .

Congratulations, Sonya :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: That was a great pace! BTW, I love your name, that's my DD's name, too (spelled the same, too) :goodvibes

Welcome, Denny and Kelley :wave2: Kelley, you have plenty of time to increase distance, you'll do great!

Sunny

Great job SOnya! You were flying!

Dilema - Need help somewhat quickly.

OK, I was all set to sign up for the 10 K Saturday. I really think a race would boost my training. I looked up last year's results, though, and it's not pretty. The last 2 years have had 337 to 367 runners. Our pace from Saturday, where I pushed it hard the first 2/2.5, would have put us 5th to 8th from the last. :guilty: Will being darn near last hurt more than it helps? I know the whole DNF>DLF>>DNS, but after finishing a marthon fairly well (at least from what I wanted to do), doing darn near last in a 10K sounds kind of depressing to me? ANy thoughts? AM I just being silly?

Sunny -- I am so sorry to hear you are doing so much worse. pixiedust:

Sonya -- congratulations!

Carrie -- I say "go for it" First of all, who cares if you are near the end, as long as you are there. And, I have found that the number of participants in events I have been doing has been increasing so much and there are so many more walkers doing these events now, so that I never feel badly about going slowly compared to last year's results. Does that make sense?

Kelley -- :welcome: Your pace is great! Is there a pacing requirement for Baltimore?

Hi, Kevin! Welcome back!
