Wk of Jul 16--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Greetings TEAM!

I'm back from my vacation on Keuka Lake, NY. We had a great week of weather - sunny and hot. Great for diving into the lake and swimming. It rained on us once, but we needed a break from the sun. It was so nice to spend the time with the family, and be able to spend all day with the princesses DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:. I'm back at work now trying to get caught up with things, and I miss them.

So I tried to keep up my training and healing while I was gone. I decided I would try to get some walking in, and not worry about running at all. Here's my report:

Monday: 2.05 mile walk in morning in 35:02 min/17:05 mpm; 1.03 mile walk in evening in 16:56 min (free'd up some room for ice cream).
Tuesday: 2:09 mile walk in morning in 34:46 min/16:38 mpm; 1 mile walk in evening with DW in 20:37 min.
Wednesday: rest day; rainy day
Thursday: 2:03 mile walk in morning in 30:01 min/14:49 mpm; 30 min deep water run in afternoon
Friday: 2.2 mile walk in morning in 33:34 min/15:15 mpm; 21 min deep water run in afternoon
Saturday: 2.04 mile walk at 4:00pm in 33:30 min/16:26 mpm; 90 degrees and HOT!!

Week total: 12.44 miles

That's the most I've walked for 5 weeks. I must say however that my right shin is still bugging me. I definitely need to keep taking the ibuprofen and icing. I'm supposed to see the PT this afternoon. I was hoping to report to him that I walked all week and felt great, but, alas, not yet.

OK, I'm still reading last week's post to catch up with everyone.

Dave-you did great getting in all that walking on vacation :thumbsup2 Glad to have you back!

Krisiti-Congrats on winning! You go girl

I'm glad to report that DS8 is home & did great on his surgery. They had to run the IV twice because they had trouble hitting the vein (he must have my mom's veins, she always has that problem) but he is recovering & should be 100% by tomorrow! He asked us this a.m. if the tooth fairy paid more for teeth you had removed by surgery :rotfl2:

Luckily, today is an off day so I can concentrate on taking care of Parker.

That's great news! Hmmm, I think the Tooth Fairy should match the cost of the surgery ;) :rotfl2:

Dave-- welcome back! Glad to hear your walking was a success. Hopefully, the right shin soreness will continue to fade.

I'm just back from the gym. I did upper body weights to near jello arms. It felt great, hopefully, not a bad thing for the back. I'll do cardio at the Y afterwork.

Just back from my first walk. It was further than planned.... DH has the truck and is out working in the field today. The remote for the TV died, and I am too lazy to get up and change the channels the old fashioned way. There are no batteries to be found in the house, so I decided to walk to the store. I put my WISH team socks on, my old comfy running shoes, my running watch and some walking gear and off I went.

Well it turned out to be 4km to the store and 4km back, so 8 km. Kind of ironic that I am too lazy to take 1 and 1/2 steps to change the tv channel, but I will walk 8 km to buy batteries so I don't have to take those 1 1/2 steps!

My break downs were:
0-1km 8mins
1-2km 13.23mins
2-3km 12.15mins
3-4km 12.45mins
4-7km 37.37mins
7-8km 13.23mins
Total 97mins 21 sec
=8 kms in 1hr, 37 mins, 21 secs

A little slow and not on pace for the 1/2 marathon. However not bad for my first walk since my surgery. And I will be able to work on the pace next week, this week is just getting out and walking. It felt good.

Hey all! Just a quicky!
I started a thread that is called "Why do we run?" I thought it would be cool to post the reasons we do this "Free sport"! :rotfl2:
Why we run???
Visit and put the reasons! I bet they will be so cool, funny, touching, ect......

:rotfl2: Thanks for making this 30-something married mother of 3 laugh her butt off this morning!! No better motivation than that!! I would sure as heck want to look smokin' too :confused3 You go girl :woohoo:

Sara - glad I could make you laugh! I am like a silly high school girl when it comes to my Goo Goo Dolls! Thank God Chad doesn't mind me talking about running away with Johnny all the time. But, I digress....

I went out and did 4 miles tonight, just got back (have to look good as possible as a 30-something mom for that meet & greet). I was scheduled for 5, but the heat & humidity are outta control here right now. When I got back in the house after stretching about 15 mins ago, the dew point was still 76!!!

13:26
13:28
14:35 (I think this is pretty good since I was doing no running at this point)

I am so mad! I just wrote out this long post and I came back and it vanished. Grrrr!! I don't feel like typing it all again, so I'll summarize. I did 3 miles on the treadmill (thank goodness for the treadmill!) and it was a fabulous run. I felt great and ran a little faster this time, for the time being, I am back to loving running again! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Tiff--Glad that your DS is doing okay. Too funny about the tooth fairy! Tell him when we were kids, we got a whopping quarter from the tooth fairy.

Sunny-- :grouphug: Can't you ever catch a break?

Lisa--Are you lurking? I saw on another thread that you are pregnant. Congrats and :wizard: :wizard: for a healthy pregnancy. You will be in my prayers for the next few months.

Kristi--Too funny about Johnny (I'm not even going to attemp the last name). It's perfectly okay to have crushes, can we say Hines Ward??

Rachael--You are too funny! Hey, whatever takes to get yourself moving! (I just noticed that is the third time I said "too funny", guess I need a new phrase!)

Dave--Glad to see you back. Sounds like you had a great time.

I better get off here, I was just so excited after my run that I had to post. I can honestly say there is nothing in the world better than getting in a good run.

I agree -- my crush is Johnny Depp

Hi Everyone,

Just a quickie here - I did 4 miles on the threadmill tonight!! I really wanted to do 6 miles (and I totally had it in me) but the heat was really getting to me. A little disappointed but at least I got something done. So evil queen, no need to come after me tonight! :thumbsup2

Welcome back Dave :wave2:

Oh - yesterday, on my rest day......I mapped out a route for running while on vacation in October in Salem MA. My DH thinks I'm crazy

Krista, How's the car?

Okay, well I said a quickie I'm getting going. Have a good night everyone!

Jodi

Just a little catching up since I am doing absolutely nothing here at work.

Sunny
- which water park did you guys go to? Zack has been singing the Water Country and Water Wizz theme songs from their commercials all the time lately. I think he's still young to bring to a water park yet - so i doubt we will go this summer. I haven't been to Water Country since high school! Good luck with the neuro surgeon!

Dave - great job doing all that walking while on vacation!

TiffJ
- glad to hear Parker came through his surgery with flying colors!

Rachael - great job going out to buy batteries so you didn't have to walk across the room - I love it!

Krista - I had to google Hines Ward. Since I have zero interest in football (sorry), I had no idea who that was! He's not too hard on the eyes though! ;) How is your car doing?

Jodi - awesome job doing the 4 miles. The heat & humidity have been awful in new England! I think you & everyone else on the DIS is in love with Johnny Depp. pirate:

Now, if I ever figure out how to post pictures...you'd think working in a technical position I would know something about computers! I must be just too lazy to figure it out....

Oh, and last night I had a skunk cross the street in front of me. I have this weird thing with random wildlife lately.

I am soooo frustrated that my posts are vanishing. My updates to the challenge thread show up and then the post reverts to the pre-update version. :confused3

I didn't train last night and I binged on chips and pretzels and chex mix. I think I have to visit Christa's thread and remind myself why I "run" so that I can get my fat butt in gear on the diet front so that it is easier to "run".

I have a 5K this weekend. I'd better get motivated to train tonight or I'll be in big trouble. It is so wicked hot here that I can't stand the thought of exerting any energy. It has been so hot and sticky at the gym -- there just doesn't seem to be enough air. AND I have had the ugliest sinus headache since Sunday when we were in a Brooklyn park for a tree dedication.

No more excuses. I haven't worked out since my 6+ miles Saturday. I WILL get my butt in gear tonight.

Tiff -- so glad Parker's surgery went well. :thumbsup2

Hey, Kristi -- Maybe if I was looking forward to meeting Johnny Reznick (sp?), I'd be motivated! Can't wait to hear all about it. I have seen GooGooDolls in concert and they were awesome. Of course, I could do without the "lawyers suck" sticker on johnny's guitar, but I understand why he feels that way, after what the band went through. ;)

Have a great day, everyone! Stay cool.

Wow, Cam (and the rest of you who actually know who I am talking about)! I really didn't think anyone would know him. I have seen them many times - going back all the way to '99 when I first hugged that beautiful man backstage as part of winning a radio contest. But what sealed it was how great the show really was. I know what you mean about the sticker. He gets way too political for me. He just needs to stand there, sing, play guitar, and just be HOT! :teeth:

And lawyers don't all suck. My best friend is a lawyer in Philly! And she's going to one of the GGD shows with me.

Enough drooling over Johnny....back to walking/running. And Cam, sometimes, you just have to get that binge over with & out of your system!

Cam - I brougt that home as an unexpected suvie from my trip on the airplane last Saturday. Afrin nasal spray seems to help a little bit but not much. Hope you are feeling better soon :goodvibes

Jodi and Kristi--Thanks for asking about my car. I got it back last night and it's fixed, but the whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm really disappointed in Saturn/GM right now, the problem with my car was that the timing chain "skipped time" and it stripped the valves and I think the pistons in one of the engine's cylinders. My car is a 2003 Ion with only 50,000 miles on it--a timing chain shouldn't even be checked until there are 80,000-90,000 miles on the car. So why would the timing chain essentially break when my car is 3 years old, is not driven hard, the oil gets changed every 3,000-4,000 miles and we keep up with all regular maintenance? When Stephen questioned Saturn about it, they claimed to have never heard of that happening in the Ion, but we Googled "Ion timing chain" and all these pages of complaints and problems popped up and Saturn/GM is doing nothing about it, they are claiming there is no problem. We also found out that the National Highway Safety Board is doing an investigation on Saturn Ion for the timing chain as we speak, yet Saturn says they are not aware of problem :confused3  . So I guess we are going to file a formal complaint and be done with it. It's really disappointing because until we started having problems with this car (not only the timing chain, but the transmission has been fixed 3 or 4 times, the starter went out last winter, and the left head lamp/turn signal was wired too high and it kept burning out bulbs) I was Saturn's biggest fan. Stephen and I also owned a 2001 Saturn SL2 and we both loved that car and we were planning on buying a Vue, but that is not going to happen now. That said, I'm very grateful and thankful that the biggest problem was the timing chain, the entire motor could have been damaged or I could have been seriously hurt or killed last week when my car broke down--I'm definitely counting my blessings!! :sunny:

Kristi--If you wanted to see Hines Ward, all you had to do was look at my signature. That's Hines Ward doing the shhh thing.

Cam-- :grouphug: and :wizard: :wizard: for motivation--I have definitely been there and done that!

Hi Team!!! :wave2:

I have so much catching up to do...I'll save that for another post. LOL!

Just letting you know that I'm back from the beach and happy to be online and connected again. I didn't train as hard as normal the past few weeks but I did get most of my runs in. I even managed to pick up the pace and logged two personal bests back to back on the 3 mile.....26:20 and 26:16!!! I was so excited (of course...now that I'm back to the hilly terrain those times will vanish lol).

Overall...I need to get in gear. Supposed to run tonight (ugh!) but this heat. I don't know what to do??? Going to KBX tomorrow. I need to get back on a normal schedule. Full training starts SOON!!!!!!!

Hey all... last night I forced myself onto the treadmill and did 35 minutes, with only 13 minutes of jogging. I think the heat is wiping me out, plus the treadmill just doesn't get me going anymore. I would rather walk on it than jog.

Kristi - Last week I had free tickets to a Rock the Park concert here with Carbon Leaf, Better than Ezra and the Violent Femmes. I am a 30-something mother also and Better than Ezra totally rocked. DH was rolling his eyes when I couldn't stop talking about it.

Krista - Wow, your car problems bring back memories of our Chrysler that we pitched to the curb 2 years ago. It was a lemon and Chrysler wouldn't do a thing about it. Our last straw was when they told us that it wasn't safe to drive, but sent us home with it for a week until the parts arrived. We were planning to drive to WDW that year and I was petrified. We drove the year prior and the brakes were on their last limb and we didn't even know it. The van was a 2000 and had problems starting 2 weeks after we purchased. Our dealer wouldn't even help us. Needless to say, we never went back there again and we have nothing nice to say about their service.

I am off to the gym at lunch to hopefully get in 30 minutes of cross training. I was supposed to meet a friend tonight, but that was cancelled.... so now I get to go grocery shopping.... yeee haawwwww

Kristi-- we went to Water Country (your post got that jingle stuck in my head again!!!!). We were at Whales Tales the week before when camping.

Christa-- I joined your "why do we run" thread :goodvibes

Jodi-- I'm with you, I've seen the PoC Black Pearl about 20 times now  It is a good story and all...

Cam-- That's awful about updated a challenge thread and having it revert to a previous version. I'd suggest copying and pasting the update into something like notepad before you post just incase.

Yesterday I left the house at 7:30 AM and got home at 8:30 PM and was totally wiped out. I planned on running 5 miles this morning when I dropped DS off at the Y but I slepted in instead. Maybe after work, or maybe today will be an unplanned rest day.

Lodging question for experts:

Hi everyone - I'm still catching up from being away last week, but I have a question about lodging. I just checked the Swan and Dolphin site, and I can get a room for $149/night Jan 6 and 7th on a teacher's discount rate. I had a reservation for the Wilderness Lodge for Jan 6th and 7th, but it is around $280/night. The other nights of the trip I plan on staying off site in a condo at Sheraton Vacation Villas. I'd love to get some thoughts about Wilderness Lodge vs. Swan and Dolphin. Seems like Swan and Dolphin would be closer to the start and finish and a lot cheaper, but I always thought it would be really cool to stay in the Wilderness Lodge.

Any thoughts?

Sunny - I LOVED your post on the "WHy I run"!

Jen - WTG on the dreadmill! I think that is AWESOME! :cheer2:

Amybeth - Glad you are back! We missed ya! Great pace! :cool1:

Jodi -
So evil queen, no need to come after me tonight!
That is AWESOME! I am really more bark than bite...just don't tell anyone! :ssst:

Very busy today so cannot really get caught up. DH is at our churches youth camp and will be there all week. I am trying to figure out when to do my LR b/c of childcare issues. AHHHHHH!
Ran 3 this morning and will take DDs swimming this afternoon in about 30 min. I may do laps during "adult swim".
Had very minor surgery this morning (to remove a funny looking mole). Dr. told me I could swim, but to take it easy...yeah right...I have children! I am waiting for the results....melanoma (SP?) runs in my family so this was my yearly scan! OUT OF CONTROL! :wizard: :wizard: for me!
Wear sunscreen everyone!

Dave, DH booked the WL during the marathon and I know the per night was under $200 and this is before discounts. We are waiting for the AAA rates to come out and that will bring it down more. We chose Standard room because we usually get upgraded for no charge and it that doesn't happen we don't care because WL is one of our faves. I haven't stayed at the Swan/Dolphin, so I don't know how it compares.

Christa, I hope those tests come back A-OK! I had a funky mole on my arm removed a couple years and wow, did it hurt while it was healing. They cut so deep. Melanoma doesn't run in my family that I know of, but cancer does and so do funky moles. Now I have a funky mole scar!

I didn't get to the Y at lunch... I didn't get lunch. I got stuck covering at work and ate at my desk. I am a bit stressed lately... I might be able to squeeze some time on the DREADmill tonight if the kids cooperate. I was hoping to not have to do that today, but looks like I have no choice. First, I am starting to loathe the dreadmill, and second, my poor girls put up with a lot from me and my crazy life.
