Hey Mel, what's the date on that Sarasota 1/2 in March? My mom's a "snowbird" & has a place in Sarasota & she'll be there in March...hmmmmm.

Jodi

It's on March 5. The course is open for 6 hours, so no worries about sweepers :cool1: It would be so cool if you could come! I'm looking forward to it, but kinda sad to not have the WISH team there, too.

I have a question for all of you that did the half this year and are thinking of or are doing the full next year, are you walkers, runners or do you do a combination of running/walking? I did the half in 2005 and finished in about 3:16 (don't remember the exact time down to the seconds) and this was mainly walking with short bursts of running to pass people. I just keep wondering if I'd be able to finish the full in time with mainly walking. I too have medal envy and really want a Mickey to go along with my Donald but I keep debating on doing the half in 2007 and then going for the full in 2008 or should I just bite the bullet and sign up for the full for 2007. Since the half in 2005 I have let myself get out of shape but I have started back in with exercising and eating better. Even though it was only 36 and misting this morning I made myself get outside and took the dog for about a 2 mile walk. I couldn't go nearly as fast as I used too but this is the first time I've walked outside since Oct. I know I have almost a year to train but I am just so undecide as to which race to sign up for

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl- I ran the whole way on the 1/2 & finished in 2:14. I really want to sign up for the full, but I'm not sure if I could run the whole thing...If you did the 1/2 in '05, I would definitely go for the full this year. You've walk/run 13 miles already. IMHO, I think a year will be good enuf for you to train. I wouldn't know which program to go with, though. run/walk, walk or run. Sounds like you had success w/ what you did in '05, maybe something like that for the full??

Jodi

Does anyone out there know the number of racers there were @ the 1/2. I've heard 16,000, is that possible?? No wonder it was so :crowded: Ugh.

Jodi

Cam- Are you in my head girl?! I have that same lingering thought in the back of my mind. I trained for 4 months for the 1/2 & felt o.k. so surely I could train for the full in 1 year. I haven't said anything to DH about it. I did tell my mom (who did 1/2 with me) that I might want to volunteer next year at whatever race I wasn't in . She said "what do you mean, whatever race you aren't in?" I just shrugged my shoulders. DH is awesomely supportive but he does think that anyone who voluntairily (sp?) does 26.2 miles is insane. Of course most people already have that opinion of me so why not give them a good reason :rotfl: And yes I think you could definately pull it off.

Mel- that Sarasota 1/2 looks very cool. Too bad it's not during spring break.

I'm taking this week off. Next week, back to training (easy at first) and back to healthy eating. Got that 15k in my sights. At least we wont have to worry about what to wear. You know it will be hot :sunny:

Jodi-- Coolrunning.com had an article that said 30,000 people were signed up for both, 16,000 for the 1/2 and 14,000 for the full.

I also talked to someone at the Wide World of Sports who said a good number of people sign up JUST to get the shirt, so they come, pick up the shirt, and then don't run. I guess it's a collector's item because you can't just go to a store and buy it.

Where is the information about the Minnie? I can't find it on disneymarathon.com. :scratchin

All right, guys, can I let you in on a little secret? Shhhhh. . . don't tell Howard. I am afraid once I say this out loud there is no backing out. But, here goes. I am having serious medal envy and NEED a Mickey. I am seriously considering signing up for the full for next year. Yeah, I know, first I should try to complete the half with a better time, more running, etc. etc., but for some reason, I just feel like I should set this goal and then go for it. What do you think? I am going to be doing all the 5Ks I can manage, a 5 miler in May and the Disneyland 1/2 in September. Do you think I could pull off the full in January?

Where's Rhonda? Hey, akasleepingbeauty, are you game?

Improve your time??? As the Penguin would say--"What's the rush? It's Disney for Pete's sake!"

If you finished in regulation, I say go for it!

We have a 70 year woman on my Team in Training Team who "walked" her way to Goofy--so you most certainly can do it. She walks "easy" at 14:00 or so and has done events where she paced in the 12:00 time range.

With good training it is possible.

You can also try walk/run intervals. Marathoning for Mortals has a training plan for this. I'd have to go peak at it--but as an example, you would walk for 4 minutes and then jog/run for 1 minute. Basically training yourself to walk most of it--but using regularly scheduled jog opportunities to just give yourself a little pad in time.

Yes Jodi, there were that many. Unfortunately they should have given the half the same courtesy as the full. Instead of 2 separate starts, there was only one start--so there were corrals A-H--which #'s 8. So assuming they are equally split (they are not--H had wayyyyy more in it than any other corral)...it is roughly 2000 people squashed in one corral.

It took ~30 minutes for the entire field to cross the start. (members on my team in H somewhere in the middle of that corral took 28 minutes to cross).

They pretty much maxed each field to what the total field was last year. Being on separate days accounted for this.

It is crowded--but it is also magical.

Hi everyone,

Please send the :wizard: and crossed fingers my way. I finally got up the nerve to have the xrays of my back/hip done last night and will find out the results at 5pm this evening. I'm kind of :scared: and  with a little bit of this  all at the same time.

I so want everything to be okay. I'm really considering the Minnie in May :cool1:

A stupid question from an Iowan for all you Floridians. How hot does it get in FL in the beginning of May????

Hello everyone!!!!

We are still not back from WDW (I know, waaahhh!) :charac2: We are having a great time here. The boy is getting into the rides. (he is napping now!)

I loved meeting everyone this weekend. It was such a treasure to get to see everyone in person. I'd think about signing up for another race just to see you all again!

I had fun on the races and am so thankful to Sara (msblrobs) for keeping me company and being my theme park potty stop tour guide!! I loved seeing everyone on the boardwalk cheering for the full! I tried to look real tough just to impress you!!!

The shirts were so awesome!!!! Lynn was way ahead of us when we were running one of the overpasses. She was on the road below, and we could see her in that huge crowd of people so that we got her attention yelling her name from the bridge! I thought the full course was very inspiring and I cried passing the choir!

I'll try to post a pic album when i get home! I'm hoping that the one's i took with the little piece of junk key chain camera turn out! I doubt they did!!!

Minnie: That's about the time I get "spring fever" which would be very hot to the average non-floridian.

They are starting the race a bit late at 6:30am. I would expect to be running in 70+ degree weather easily with the days high being near 80. "I" don't think it is humid in May--but to those who don't like humidity and don't live in it--it might be, so the temps may feel a little bit warmer. It probably will be weather comparitive to last years Disney marathon. Start temps were in the mid-60s and finishing temps were in the low to mid-80s. (6am-2pm). The Minnie will be done by 9am.

Hi, everyone and thank you so much for your confidence and encouragement. God knows I'll need both if I am actually going to take on the task of training this year for a full marathon. OMG! Did that just come out of my mouth? . . . .er, fingers?

Think I'll wait a bit before registering. Maybe I will come to my senses. ;)

Minnie -- I hope you are even now getting very good news and that your treatment and recovery will be swift and painless.

Melissa -- I am so happy you are having a great time at WDW. I bet it is kind of quiet there now. We noticed a big difference on Monday. BTW, thank you so much for your phone call on Saturday. I can't believe you found us but I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to chat with you after the race.

I, like many of you, have come to the realization that after a short recovery period, I really have to get back on track with eating and exercising. I was horrified to realize I've gained about 7 pounds since before Thanksgiving, but am already seeing some small progress as I get back into the water and healthy food habits. I am excited at the prospect of returning to WDW for the Minnie as an even healthier and more fit and prepared participant than I was for the 1/2. Looking forward to sharing this year-long journey with all of you.

Did my first post-race SR tonight. MFM scheduled it as an easy W3/R1 x 8, so that was it. Boy, did I feel tight! I took it slow at a 14:56 pace. Tomorrow will be rest, then I'm going to try to make sure I get started right on cross-training on Fridays.

Minnie...come on down for the Minnie! It'll be fabulously, gloriously WARM in May! Definitely shorts for the race :sunny:

MelR...glad to see you're having a great time!

Cam, Rhonda, Tiff...I didn't know y'all were coming down for Minnie! Yay!!!

I'm trying to convince DH that I can't live without the Disneyland castle medal, but he's not biting :sad1: Can I stowaway with one of y'all?

I have never posted on a message board before, but have lurked on a few -- especially the DIS board.

Anyway, I came across the WISH team and got excited. I am a walk/runner but a run/walker wannabe. My plan was a 5k then a 10k this year, but now I am thinking of adding the 1/2 marathon in 2007. My birthday is 1/8 so I am thinking DH may agree to the trip.

DH, DD15, DS 3.5, DS 1.5 and I will actually be at WDW in for 4 days in April/May, but we leave May 2, or I would commit to the Minnie.

Just reading all your posts is so exciting. I reserved Marathon for Mortals from my library and am looking forward to reading it.

Question: When you ladies say take this time to get in shape to train, what do you mean? What type of workout do you suggest? Also, do all of you do WW? Does anyone try to follow the new food pyramid?

Thanks,
Maggie

Hi maggie! Welcome to the Dis WISH board-- it's always great to see new people join in on running the race next year!!

I do weight watchers-- it's the most realistic program, flexible enough (I don't have to eat what is given to me), and I can adapt it to my training program (where I need a lot more food then the # of points they give you to eat a day)

I don't do the new food pyramid-- I never really looked closely at it, but I assume it is telling you to eat a certain number of proteins/ carbs/ etc? I think I kind of do that anyway based on my diet, and what I need to eat for "fuel," but I don't follow that specifically. There may be some people on the main WISH board that follow it, if nobody here does!

Welcome again!!

Hey All!Got back Tuesday..DD7.5 was still sick so we went to the Dr as soon as we got home. She is fine now. ANYWAY..........
It was SOOO great to meet the WISHers. I could spot everyone b/c of the shirts.
Maggie - Welcome! You have now found a bunch of GREAT friends!
Melissa - I feel like we are old friends!
Lynn - I hope I spelled your name right....I was so glad to see you. I hope you are feeling better! I told you my name, but did not ask yours b/c I knew you! For me, it was like we already knew each other. I will be a tri geek too!
There were a few more, but by the time I saw you, I was near the end of the Goofy and to say the least, I was feeling a little goofy myself!
THE RACE WAS AWESOME! If you are want to do the Goofy, but not sure you can do it I say GO FOR IT! You have a year to train!
I ran with Bree, Ron the whole 1/2. DH and friend Scott Whittle ran with us until DH hurt his knee. Melissa joined us near the end!
I ran with DH for the full. I was trying to be a good wife and his knee was hurting. Around mile 20, he told me to go on. He was listening to his MP3 player and I was trying to talk to him. I think I was getting on his nerves. So I went on. I ran the last 6 miles talking to anyone who would listen to me and running like a crazy woman! Around mile 22, I closed my eyes (only for a moment) and thought how I loved this FREE sport!
I got to the finish line, and then I got to see Bree, Melissa, DH, and others cross. It was AWESOME!
OH......DH was in the Orlando paper. I think it is called the Sentanal (SP?). You can see me, but it has his name in it. :worship:
