Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

I just realized I've been cured of a bizarre compulsion. I no longer feel uncontrollable urges to check the Orlando weather every five minutes:rotfl2:

Oh I really do need to return to reality soon......

Not yet. Just do like I've been doing. Checking for race reports every five minutes.

Aren't these people back yet???? :confused3

:rotfl:

Hey everyone, OK, I have some questions if some of of you would so kind as to help me out.

Unfortinatley I can not find marathoning for mortals in Canada, I am sure they have it but I can't find it anywhere.

Not sure how to really start training, I have to start now as I am sort of a newbie and have alot of work to do. What do you all suggest I start with? I have been walking about 5 K per night..not sure what that is in miles ...sorry and on my stationary bike 15K which is usually about 45 min. I have about 30 pds still to lose so that is the main reason for the bike thing. How many K's or miles a day should I be doing?? Any other helpful hints you have for me?

All is greatly appreciated.

I hope you don't all get sick of me by next January.:grouphug:

:rotfl:

The long-trippers should be required to carry lap-tops so we're not left hanging...:rotfl:

Kim, 5K is 3.1 miles and a great start. Have you tried to order MFM online?

I'm here and busy at work :surfweb: Anyone want to join me on this conference call that will never end as we go through a 100 page agreement line by line? I could give you the call-in number. :dance3:

We had such a blast this weekend! It was so wonderful to spend time with old WISH friends and meet new ones. All of the WISH meets were fantastic. When I saw the WISHers in front of the Yacht and Beach Club cheering me on, I started to cry. I will do a long trip report later, but the short version is that DH did the 1/2 in 2 hours :scared1: and then did the full with me on Sunday. We finished in 6:56. It was hot, and I learned that 26.2 miles is a long, long, long way.

To add to the list of odd sights: Don't forget Spiderman in the 1/2 with the entire costume and mask. We also saw Mr. Incredible during the full. He was in the full getup with tights, long sleeve shirt, and eye mask. But the most bizarre was the woman who ran with a baby in a front baby carrier for the entire 1/2 marathon. The baby was facing out and appeared to be about 9 months old. I saw them at the MK and at the finish.

I signed up for the Minnie 15k today. Cam & Rhonda- Count me in! Now, let's continue to work on Carrie. ::MinnieMo

Until reading this I forgot about the lady that did the Half carrying a baby (I would guess around 14-15 months) in a Baby Bjorn type thing. I can not IMAGINE doing that!

:scared1: That can't be good for the back!

Congrats on 26.2:banana: :thumbsup2 :cool2:

Hmmmm the Minnie is still open  I'm going to have to check the dates for that one. Wonder if I still have time to get my rear in gear

Cam - You are definitely allowed dramatics after 26.2! Can't think of a better time for them ((big grin)). So what's the plan for next year?

Judy - So glad you checked in today. What you have accomplished so quickly is amazing!

Congrats to the WISH TEAM!!!!!!!!

Yeh Cam - you did it. And you did it after falling over - you are now officially a big dog!!!

And now know I'm officially back on the WISH team, I'm on deadline today and so what am I doing - checking race reports at 10.30am!!!

Off to running club tonight, I think I'm aiming for 45 minutes, hopefully my lungs won't hurt as much as Monday night. I'm counting it as my first official Goofy training run. It's quite funny, my mum has started training for a 10k run back in England, she's on the one lampost walk, one lampost run plan at the moment and did 2.5 miles yesterday - so I'm thinking - hmmm, only 11 miles to go, she can do that by January!!

And I spose I'd better enter my first event for the year. It's Feb 25th - normally I do the half but it's sooo hot and sooo hilly I don't think I can face getting ready for that in six weeks or whatever it is, so I'm doing the 11km - could be good training for Fla, it doesn't start until 9am, it's normally about 85 degrees by then!!! Helen

Okay, I am now officially INSANE! I just registered for the Goofy in 2008! :dance3: On Sunday, I made DH promise that I would never have to run that far (26.2 miles) again. :lmao:

Sunny- In your spare time  could you make a cool siggie for Goofy 2008? I want to add it. And, by the way, I am sooooo proud of you! :cheer2: You had a rough 2006, and I know that 2007 is going to be much better for you! You finished 5 minutes ahead of me so I must have seen you along the way (at least during the turnaround), but I must have been "in the zone" (a/k/a the zone of pain). And "Yay" to Paul for completing his first 1/2! :cheer2: Will he join us again in '08?

Ooh, and one more weird sight: Remember Wonder Woman and Super Girl in the 1/2?

Funny you should ask... I just replied to Matt's request on the other thread:

Oh Minnie you have to do the Minnie! I won't be there, but I'll scream my lungs out here in Boston for you:cheer2:

As for drama, I didn't realize how dramatic my report was. I sent it to my Mom and this was her reply. I'm posting it both because she's the best Mom in the world and 'cause it made me realize I really poured it on thick. I was really only miserable from mile 23 until I woke up from my nap;) Also, because her words apply to everyone who raced this weekend.

My Mom's reply to my race report:
"I must admit that your race report was hard for me to read (despite it being so well written) – experiencing it through your words brought lots of tears. I have never wanted anything that badly and never suffered that much. I am such a wimp for pain and just cannot imagine overcoming such difficulties. Who am I kidding? I can't even imagine taking up such a sport (or any sport) in the first place! Since I am such a wimp, your will and desire to do this is hard for me to understand, but I am filled with awe and respect for your sheer willpower, emotional strength and your outstanding accomplishment. I just cannot imagine going through what you went through, pushing on, suffering so much, facing your fears, yet having that tremendous sense of satisfaction. You pushed through pain and fear – and yes, even common sense! I cried as I read it. As I read, I thought of your call from your ice tub and me chattering away and putting Joshua on the phone when you were recuperating, sick and suffering! I'm so mindless!!!! But you sounded wonderful on the phone, and that was so reassuring. I was very scared and didn't really want you to do this, even the half. But there was no way I was going to oppose or discourage you. I knew you had to work this through and you proved to yourself that you could do it – and to all of us who love you that you are one very strong, very determined and very outstanding woman! I know you would have LOVED to have been well enough to interact with your WISH friends and to get your photo with the medal. That's very sad! But the main thing is that you got it!

You are amazing, my dear daughter. I pray you will be fine and that the joy you have from this great accomplishment will strengthen you day-by-day in the everyday things that so occupy all of our lives. Where, oh where did you come from? Surely there is a marathon runner or outstanding person like you somewhere in the family genes – but they have to be on Dad's side!!!!!! ;-)
"

With an encouraging Mom like that, who couldn't complete Goofy?

Oh sunny how sweet! What a great mom! She's really proud of you and she has good reason to be. :thumbsup2

I have also finally officially signed up for the Minnie with DD....so excited.

Kim

Colleen, Sunny...coming back next year?

Anyone heard from Jodi, AmyBeth or Kevin?

Just got back tonight.

Sunny - So glad you got through the weekend. You've had a rough year and I know this was what you really wanted. Congratulations! And your Mom's reply was really moving!

Cam
- So glad you got your Mickey! :goodvibes And that you're not seriously hurt. It was good to see you and Howard again.

Judy - I'm glad you're okay. Congrats on getting the Donald medal. I didn't get to "officially" meet you after the half.

Congrats to everyone who hd a great weekend and got their medals. I was happy to meet several WISH-ers. I hung out with Kathleen and Lisa in the corrals and saw a bunch of you on the race mornings. I'm sorry I didn't get to any of the meets. It's harder when I have guests with me. I don't feel right leaving them.

My weekend didn't go as I had planned. I finished the 1/2 in 3:22. My goal of breaking 3 hours went out the window when I walked out my door at 3:20 AM and felt the heat and humidity. Finishing became the goal. But my time was a few minutes faster than last year, so that was good.

I was a little sore after the 1/2. My legs felt tired. But I rested most of the day, took the cold bath, rubbed up with icyhot and just took it easy.

I wanted to try to keep a good pace early in the full to try to get as far along as I could before the sun came up and it got hot. Once the race started I felt pretty good. At the 1/2 way point I actually had a better time than Sat.'s 1/2 (3:17). But at mile 15 I felt the blisters on my feet. I kept going to try to finish. But by the time I got a little past the 21 mile mark, I couldn't put my feet flat on the ground. I got blisters on the bottoms of both heels, on the side of one heel, on the ball of one foot and I have a blood blister going around one of my toenails.

I don't know why I'm having the blister problems. The area where I had a blister in training, I used Craig's advice and rubbed vaseline on the area, then rubbed vasline on both socks in that area. How I got the blisters on the bottom of my heels, I have no clue.

So I didn't finish. I am very disappointed in that (even though I have the 3 medals from last year's event). I don't like not finishing. But I'm sitting here, as I type this, with my feet soaking in Epsom salts to try to help clear these up. Did you ever try walking around the parks only on the balls of your feet? Not very comfortable.

Okay, my pity party is over. I'm thinking about the Goofy for '08. Will decide soon. At least I have a whole year to figure out my blister issues.

Congrats again to everyone!

Terri

Terri- So glad to hear from you! We were all worried about you. I am so sorry about the blisters. :wizard: that you feel better soon.
