Wk of Jan. 27th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Thanks everyone. As you all point out (and I really know), I just need to start.

Bill - Start small. I don't know what training plan you are using, but don't start with anything too overwhelming. When I started training for the 2007 Half I started with 20 min on the TM at 3.2 and I was THRILLED! Start small and keep adding, no more than 10% a week. And hang around here. We'll keep you going.

Don't worry Judy, no matter what happens, I still plan to hang around here. You guys aren't going to be able to get rid of me easily.

Bill the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Hold on there. I have no intention of becoming Dean Karmazes. If your expecting a thousand mile event from me, I might have to revise my training plans (AGAIN). ;)

Kristi - Yes, yes I am. I'll do it right now. Let me think.....getting out calculator...2008 = 47, 2009 = 48, 2010 = 49, 2011 = Full!
You sure it's not 2012?
You know seeing as it's the beginning of Jan. '12?
I mean, I won't 'qualify' for the Full until 10/2011... ;)
So, doing it 1/2011 would be cheating and early, you see. :lmao:

Bill - I will hop in the car with Lisa and come find you! :rotfl:
No worries, seriously. You can do this!

Ok, we are off to buy Chad his much needed running shoes.
And then off to the movies while Zack is still at preschool. popcorn::
I love this day care/preschool thing! We get to go on an afternoon date! :cloud9:

Speaking of Dean...
Does anyone here want to read his book?
I finished it and would be happy to ship it to someone who might enjoy it.
Even though I am NEVER doing any crazy ultra races, I thought it was a very good book.

Bill - Use teh 10 minute rule. Go home tonight adn tell yourself you are going to do a work out. If, after 10 minutes, you just want to stop, that's ok. You did something. Most of teh time, you will keep going. However, it's easier to start if you tell yourself you only HAVE to do 10 minutes. Good luck!

Go get em Bill! You can do it! :cheer2: :goodvibes :cheer2:

OK... did my longest run ever today! I ran 7 miles, average pace was right at 11:00. I was so worried, I had only run up to 10K distances. DH was so sweet. I text him when I start and finish a run and he called me later to tell me how proud he was of me. It made me feel good. He is really my only running supporter in life, with the exception of you guys. :grouphug: Next week I up it to 8 miles and I'm sure I'll be scared all over again. :lmao:

This was the first time I took something with me to eat. Half way I ate five of those sport beans and at first I thought for sure they were gonna make me sick. They are so sweet! But, I drank my water and I don't know if it was a mental thing or not, but I felt better the second half... :confused3

So my knees are hurting right now. Is that a bad sign or just because I'm increasing my miles?

Also, got a shoe question. Once I got my current shoes my foot problems stopped, but now my right foot is hurting. I've put 113 miles on these shoes and I have a half marathon end of March. Think I'll need a new pair before then? I'd greatly appreciate the advice!

Thanks guys! (And oh - Team Herc's Heroes is gonna rock all of you out! :rockband: )

Shan - Congrats on th LR!!! That worry before is what makes it so great when you finish! As fro shoes, the rule of thumbs I use are 6 months or whenever you get a new hurt. I'd say try new shoes first. I always get about 6 months frm my ASICs. However, only got 4 months from my Mizunos. Dh got less time wiht those too.

Hi Everyone!

Started the day by going to an Academic Awards Ceremony for dd11. I have been beaming all day! :goodvibes She has struggled so hard for years and I guess I just never thought I would see this day. Oh I am gonna cry again! :goodvibes Now if I can get her to start running....

Bill - GET OUT THERE! I think the 10 minute rule might be a good start. Most of the time its just a matter of starting. Once moving you are ok.

Or you could do like I did when I first started, I would reward myself for exercising with a cream puff. Nothing else worked. Even now, I occasionally swing by the bakery after a particularly miserable work out.

The problem is that it is cold and miserable outside. Even on sunny days its a little depressing. The weather makes everyone want to curl up and hibernate. Well, hibernate with a plate of brownies anyway.

Shan! - Way to GO!
I used to call my dh after every run too. Now I only call him after the really rotten or really good runs.

Do your knees hurt or ache? Achy knees after a long run is fairly normal - take an epsom slat bath and that should help. Go back and reread the chapter on injury in MFM. He has some good guidelines. As for the shoes, that depends on your training plan. I would mark your calendar for March 10th and look at your miles then. If you need new shoes, that is the latest I would get them. I rarely get more than about 350 miles on a pair of shoes but I am tough on shoes. I run too much to take chances once I notice the support is waning.

Angie - you won't believe the things that count as XT.....

Oh, by the way, don't tell Senior Master Sargent/Captain Big Vic I came here to get this off my chest. He may try to trade me for a late round draft pick and future considerations in the Challenge Game.

A HA!

Cecelia - Huge congrats for dd!!!! It means so much more when they have struggled to get there. (((hugs)))

So tonight I did BodyFlow - combo: yoga, pilates, back -- perfect for my continued recovery. I would much rather be getting off the treadmill a sweaty mess, but ya know what can you do? Tomorrow night I will ease my way into an easy 3 miles. I will repeat the easy runs I did this week into next week and then I hope to slowly start notching it up into MINNIE training mode.

Angie: I have to say that the XT is what helped me IMMENSELY while recovering from an injury. Now i run less days (only 3 to 4) and do cardio XT two to three times per week AND core work six days per week. My last year of training was a HUGE difference from the previous year where I was wrought with injury. I also felt fantastic after running Goofy this year...so I know the XT really helps. It sounds like you're doing great with the core work for your back. I just taught a body flow type class (fusion flow) this morning...but let me tell you...my clients leave a sweaty mess :rotfl: . After somebody subbed for me a few weeks ago in a different class they said "we want the easy instructor back". Hopefully they were kidding LOL!

Anyway...the key to XT is finding something you love. I dread the elliptical...but enjoy the bike (the real outdoor one not the stationary type lol). That's why I can't wait for this crummy winter weather to pass so I can back outside. Maybe some cardio classes would work for you?

Shan: CONGRATS ON A GREAT RUN!!!! :thumbsup2 Speaking of XT...did you ever try that pilates class we were discussing? Just curious if you ever had a chance to visit that studio :).

Bill: You can do it....don't look at the big picture, just start small and make sure to keep yourself healthy! Get your core work in so you can protect your back and just start moving. As I've been told by my mentors in training...."movement heals". It truly does...just take it at your pace and don't look at the whole big year of training. Just look day to day :). Best of luck!!!! Oh and....we must have a friendly little Super Bowl competition here. I'm a giants fan...it was a birth right and curse depending on the year. Anyway...best of luck and let's hope for an awesome game Sunday! :thumbsup2

Amy, I wish I could have taken your mat class--there one at my gym is only once a week at a time I can go.

Ms. Ducky: C'mon on up. We're both in NJ....how far could it be LOL! Great job on the workouts...you're doing awesome girl!

Sooo...was planning to run today....but the weather is NASTY. Icy, cold, windy...schools shut down....I did have to teach this morning and 6 crazy ladies actually showed up for my fusion flow class. Not sure I want to slip and slide to the fitness center to hit the treadmill this afternoon....so I guess I'll log some miles on the ski machine later. *sigh* So much for a solid week of running. At least it's supposed to be 50 here tomorrow. Should be perfect for a nice 6 miler :).

Have a great weekend everyone! Here's to the snow melting, the ice melting and the warm temps returning :sunny:

AmyBeth--maybe you could have a webcast class????? Our gym offers a great Pi/Yo class that I want to take, but it's at 6-freakin' am--it takes me 20 min on a good day to get to the gym, so I'd have to be up, oh, at 5-ish?? Not happening. And then all the other pilates/yoga classes are offered when I'm working--I'm sensing a conspiracy here

Angie--I'm also working on boosting my crosstraining. It's hard for me, b/c if I see an empty treadmill I want to jump on it and run. I've had to start "dressing" for xtraining. I wear my non-running running shoes and non-running gym clothes--then I'm not tempted to get on the TM and bang out 3 or 4 miles. Speaking of which, I got 40 min on the ellpitical today and 20 min on the bike.

Bill--You can do this! Carrie's 10 min rule sounds great--some days I even need to follow it. We're right here behind you!:cheer2:

I'm in a serious funk right now. Crappy winter weather, no vacations until June (I know poor me!), and no races on my calendar (except ToT) I really want to do a race in May, but BIL's wedding is really messing up my calendar. Oh well. Have a great weekend all!

BIL's wedding is really messing up my calendar.
You know, I recall some of us telling you to nip that wedding thing in teh bud, last may. here you've had almost 8 monhts to et them to change it adn now it's too late. ;) :rotfl: I do WISH you coudl come to Minnie!

Cecilia, congrats to your DD! :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: That is wonderful!
I got your PM. :goodvibes I'll email you this weekend, kids just got home and they're hovering over me wanting the computer.

Amy, nope. I know, I'm a slacker. It just seems like I have no time. I really need to, especially now that the place you recommended DH's club he just joined gave him a discount there! Maybe that was a sign... :rolleyes1

Knees don't feel as achy now and it's been a few hours since I got back. Thanks everyone for the advice. I did put ice on my foot. Feels better now, too.

:rotfl:

:rotfl2: I dont even know Dean, but it does sound Kamakazee ish!!

anyway - just START!

Carrie - I still have to do the ten minute rule - then I usually have to do it twice!! 2 ten minutes is better than NONE!! Thanks for the reminder!!

SHAN :woohoo: WTG - how did that long run feel?!! :woohoo:

That webcam class sounds good to me too - I'm up at 5:30 to get the day going - I just dont know how to fit a gym session in!

Sandy - lol. I still use ut too. Try to sstetch to 1 mile sometimes. I typically have to run back 10 min too. Still, it does get em going at times.

Amy - Hmmm...I see business opportunity for you with these webcasts. I might be up for that too!

You guys are too sweet about the webcasts. :goodvibes I would love to teach a Pilates class for my Wish friends! I'm in the very early stages of creating a website....but I just can't imagine putting a video of myself up there!!!! Yikes! :rotfl: I'll keep you updated....the wheels are turning :).

Cecilia: Meant to say it before....BIG congratulations to your daughter. You must be on :cloud9: .

I was INSPIRED today!

I was running on our indoor track, and as I got into the 3rd mile an older dude who runs a lot and I knew had run lots of marathons began to stretch and get ready.

He stepped on when I was near mile 4, and I caught him just as I began my 4th mile. He asked how much I had left and I told him I had 1 more mile at 10 mpm pace. He fell in with me and we talked. I told him I was working back after the Disney Marathon on the 13th. He countered that he was training for Boston, but this would be his last Boston Marathon. He said the 40 straight :scared1: Boston Marathons was enough for him. He still loved to run, but the training necessary for a marathon was getting too hard on him.

So he stepped up his tempo and we ran that last mile in 9:50.

How cool of a running partner did I have today?

Best to all
Craig

I love cardio classes and that's all I did before I started running. We have your basic cardio class at our gym it's body attack (we do all the Less Mills stuff if you are familiar with that) and body step. I was a junkie to these classes before I started running. I went to one body step a couple of weeks a go and would actually like to start back to body attack but still a little worried about my back. It is much better though and it has been almost officially 3 months since surgery. I definately need to start doing core more though, when I was trying to avoid surgery in the beginning I was doing core 6 days a week and I know being prone to back problems now that is som important for me to avoid further injury while training for the full!!!!!!!

So I guess I don't have to worry about XT for tomorrow cause I did not get my run in tonight so I will do it tomorrow. And the only XT going on Sunday is eating and drinking, watching the super bowl!!!

GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Bill I just had to!! We are FL natives but for some reason DH is huge GIANTS fan?? Always has been!!!
