Wk of Jan. 27th-- WISH Walking/Running Club

Kaley...I don't know what to tell you about running the race. Of course we'd all love to see you down there at the Minnie but maybe your knee surgery has to take precedence? Talk it over with your awesome Mom. I'm sure the right answer will come to you soon. BTW...I have to say. My daughter is a Kaley too....only we spell it Kayleigh. She's much younger than you but loves the theater and was recently in the musical The Music Man. She played Amaryllis. Anyway...best of luck with your decision. I just know you'll make the best decision for you. :goodvibes

Debra: Jodi from WiSH has highly recommded Chi Running. I'm going to order it on Amazon. She says it's an awesome book. It actually deals with running with your core...which is near and dear to my heart as a pilates instructor. So I'm going to check it out :).

Jen: I'll see your 6 slacker miles and raise ya. I've run...count 'em TWO WHOLE MILES since Goofy. :cheer2: Go me. Anyway...at least you have an excuse girl....you really DO have to rest that ITB. Awesome job getting out there for 3 today.

We too are mourning the passing of football season :sad1:

For anyone that's interested in a WISH tech shirt, we bought a lime green RaceReady singlet to check it out. Here's a thread with photos and comparison info:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1701599

Jen...are you thinking about dropping intervals altogether? I'm not sure...I had trained up to a R8/W2 awhile back, but dropped it in favor of the 4/1. There's a training schedule for the Gate River Run over in Dana's neighborhood that takes you from a R4/W2 to running the 15K.

http://www.gate-riverrun.com/15ktraining.pdf

I'm going to keep the MFM mileage and train up to 10 using the regular half program, but I kinda like how they did the intervals in the Gate program.

SWDave...thanks for the info. How did the mental thing work when you changed to running more?

Debra...you have to get DH involved too! He can be Mr. February ;)

Heather...I'm starting Minnie training tomorrow too!

Yes, Kaley has a big decision with the knees. There hasn't been a good time to do it so far, her schedule is always so busy (which also makes training difficult)

Slacker miles! :lmao:

Debra GREAT Recap :thumbsup2 I mostly read Running Magazine, and check out books from the library!

Mel awesome job on the shirts - I think you have something on the calendar idea!! :rolleyes1

My training? HAH - yes, it was laughable - and Jen you're more than welcome to our snow!! Just sayin... You see, the sun was shining, the weather report was above freezing.. but THERE IS SNOW OUTSIDE!! No one mentioned that fact!! (I've been fighting a cold, with vertigo, hadnt moved off the couch much!) so I get all decked out, go outside with fdil - SNOW... the sidewalks are covered in the stuff!! (mind you I ran Christmas eve, but the sidewalks were shoveled... not today!)

So does fdil let me go back to my couch? NO... she decides I will be her guest at her gym - :sad2: So she helped me do 2 miles on the treadmill, and I did the interval work.

It didnt kill me, but I sure dont know how I'm going to be ready for the 8K March 30 - but TEAMWORK will win out!!

When is Spring in Chicago???

Mel you posted while I was typing - just the post I needed to see!! :thumbsup2 Thanks for the link - I'm sure it will help me train for the Shamrock Shuffle! Its no Krispy Kreme race, but there is beer at the finish line!! :rotfl2:

Mel - No, I don't think I will give up intervals all together, except maybe for 5K's. I am going to go back to running longer tho. Last year I was up to run6/walk1, then dropped to 4/1 because it made counting easier, then dropped to 3/2 for the marathon. I found that even tho I dropped to 4/1, my pace was the same. I really think I am going to work on speed first and then concentrate on running longer. I have to be very careful because in March of last year I started working on speed, had gotten faster and by April my PF exploded. Now running too hard on pavement (like the marathon) apparently aggravates it.

When is Spring in Chicago???

Oh I hear ya! Went outside mid-day figuring might be do-able. Yeah, not so much. Definitely not when I realized that half the puddles on our street actually still had ice in them. I may not be the brightest crayon in the box but I know better than to try that and have my knee go out (torn ACL).

Should've gone to the gym but had Mom's b-day dinner at 2.30 and well you know, there's always laundry to be done and some cleaning and.....

Did get in 3 miles on the eliptical yesterday so didn't totally blow the weekend and bag is set for gym on way home from work tomorrow.

Liz

Sandy - Are you in Chicago??? If so, think about the Madison, WI 1/2 marathon over Memorial weekend. Pat is planning to come north from Chicago for this one and I am coming down to it. We will have a mini WISH meet and would love more people.

Liz and anyone else.... See above!!!

THANK YOU WISH TEAM. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

My run was great!!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: I only did 2.5 and I SWEAR on my life I tried to run slow, but since I don't a GARMIN :rolleyes1 and no watch I guess my perspective of slow is a little off..... It's been a little while :confused3 So I did a 10 min pace. I'm good with that considering what I have been through in the last 3 months, let a lone the last year.

As a little more motivation for anyone out there who needs it: DH I told you is not happy with his time at Disney .... WHATEVER!!! so he has been training hard. Tonight he did 10 miles at 8:20 pace WOOOOHOOOOO :cool1: :cool1: The reason I say this can be motivation is for those of you who dont know he had back surgery (yes we have to copy each other on EVERYTHING :) ) just this past July. And his pain before surgery was so bad that he had not run for at least 3 or 4 months prior.

So when he first started trying to get back, he litearally couldn't finish a mile. Now here he is 6 months later, Kicking but!!!! :dance3:

For all of you out there who feel like SLACKERS I have so much respect for what you guys worked for and accomplished this past year. From my personal experience if you are having a REALLY hard time finding the motivation then that's PROBABLY your body saying I'm tired, give me a break -- we deserve it. So just for now relish in your accomplishment. But then --GET YOUR BUT BACK OUT THERE!! Gotta go take a bath, relax and try to prepare myself for the battle that I call work tomorrow morning.

Another week with no training. I guess getting a PR in a 5k right after a marathon is not the best idea. :rolleyes1 My right leg rebelled in a big way. For the next couple of days, walking was not fun. It is getting better each day but I definately don't want to push it. Hopefully I will get a little in this week but since we are going on vacation this weekend, I am not sure what will get done.

Mel - Like the shirts and I am sure we would be interested in some but have no clue as to what or how many.

Now to catch up on everyone since I have been a computer slacker this weekend.

Bill

That would be so cool but we've got two bike road rides that weekend in Rockford (30 miles one day, 45 the next). Have to keep an eye out for other events we can meet up at.

I'm near Great America actually!! DH hits Madison from time to time for work!! Its a small world.... Memorial weekend - what about August for the Chicago Distance Classic?? I take it no one is doing that one in '08??!!

Lake County has a great race Labor day as well- they have Beer!! At a Brew Pub!! and snacks!!

Kayley: Wow, that's a tough decision and I don't know what to say. I know you're giving it serious thought and will make the right choice for this point in your life.

Kaley

Amy, thanks for your QUICK and helpful response. It's good to have a pilates expert weigh in. I checked out the Amazon reviews, the book (and DVD) is available through Interlibrary Loan, and if it deals with both my core (my soft spot, hah!) and running, so we may have a winner! Ding, ding, ding! I'm definitely going to check it out.

Debra...you have to get DH involved too! He can be Mr. February ;)
:lmao: I'd love to, because he's really cute. At least I think so ! But I'm thinking baby steps. First I get his permission to use his real name, then I coax him into a WISH shirt (with lots of praises about how it complements his coloring). He was very impressed by all the friendly folk--spectators and runners--Marathon weekend, so I think he'll come around.

Sandy: I love the library too, and know it will be a good resource once I have some titles. (Like above.) We currently get Runner's World, and I turn to the Penguin first thing. I'm looking for more, I guess, to stave off the post-marathon depression. I haven't decided on any races yet, as our schedules are really up in the air for the next few months. :sad2:

Liz: WTG on the workout. And thanks for reminding me I should get in the habit of packing my bag the night before.

Angie: A big whoo-hoo to you AND your DH. That's great news!

Bill: Ouch. I hope your leg is feeling better soon and you can, at least, enjoy your vacation.

Count me as another one of the running slackers. Totally blew off any sort of LR this weekend. Maybe it was the overindulgence at dinner Friday night, DD's barfs Saturday night, or the 17 hours of actual work I did.....How did I ever manage to train for a marathon.

I did manage, though, to register as a volunteer for the Little Rock Marathon (both at the expo and the finish line). By doing that, I know that I can't register for the 1/2. I was really wanting to register, but my mind keeps telling me that I need a long distance break

Angie--WTG on your run! Can't wait to hear how awesome you do in May!

Hey guys! Just wanted to check in real quick before the end of the weekend. Wow, it looks like everyone is doing great getting the steps in, especially so shortly after marathon weekend. Good job!

Angie--GREAT JOB on the run! It had to feel so good to get out there again! Here's hoping you'll be ok to run and can get back on track!

Helen--too funny about showing up to the pub in shorts. :lmao: Hope the running club works out well for you.

Steve--good job getting the miles in. Especially on the treadmill. You have more patience than I.

Jen--that's cool that even the "Bostonian" was asking about your Goofy experience! Isn't it great to start telling strangers the war stories after the family quits listening? :thumbsup2

Kaley--god luck with your decision about whether to train or not. I know that's got to be a tough call. I'm sure your mom can also help out with that decision (although do parents REALLY know best?? :) ). I know it may be hard to think past the Minnie right now, but in 5 years, do you think you'd be better off if you had the knee surgery now or later? I don't know the answer, but hopefully it will come to you. Good luck again with your decision.

Mel--thanks for all the work on the tech shirts! If we end up getting enough interest for an order, I know Krista and I would be in for a few of them. By the way, tell Jeff he makes a great Mr. January.

Bill--take it easy on that leg. Hoping you can get back to training soon. By the way, how much would you give to be back at WDW right now chatting at Ohana again? Of course, I could always go for Ohana! :)

Laurie--great job on the 8 miler!

Dave--ok, I'm going to confess. I'm an idiot. I went to your page to vote for your photos, and I couldn't figure out how to vote. Am I missing something really easy? Don't answer that. :sad2: But seriously, how do I vote??

Training's going ok, I guess. I feel like a big slug, like I should be getting in more miles than I really am. I did a nice, comfortable 7 miles this afternoon. That gave me 14 for the week. I managed to get in some biking and lifting, too, but it still didn't seem like enough. I guess it's better to get back to training slowly and avoid injury. I always turn into an ignorant, ill-informed runner immediately after a marathon and I forget everything I've learned about starting back slowly and re-building mileage and I usually start with too much too soon and end up injured. So maybe I'll try to break the trend this time.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Is anyone else NOT looking forward to another Monday? :sad2: Is there any way we can just bump up the 2009 marathon weekend by about 45 weeks?

Talk to you all later!

Steve

Hi DianeL- I haven't seen you over here for a while. So were your Pal Mickeys along for the ride with you during marathon weekend this year?

Hi M.S. Dave!!! Yup the Pals were along for the trip, someone around here has a photo of mine at the Monday breakfast meet wearing his own Marathon Weekend shirt and his very own Mickey Medal :) Might be Kathy (Valentine). Since Susan couldn’t make it down this year due to a new job I had her mouse waiting in Epcot with Mom (barb) just before the Choir. So if you see my photos he’s in there, at least in spirit I dragged Susan across the finish line ;) The ASI photos look more like I’m whispering in his ear most likely saying remind me never to do this again but I am crazy and am planning on the Full again in 2010.

My bib # is 12189 if you look at the finishline photos you will also notice a washcloth that turned into my security blanket and if I ever get to post the link I had that cloth with me even at the WISH tent after the race.

They weren’t out and about as much on this trip because after a while they can drag on you. Thanks for thinking of me :) I’m usually so horrible about keeping up with the main list so was happy that I caught your post :)

Jen117 with the race behind me I want to build my running. Before the race I was just running 1 solid mile and then working on mile 2. I hope I can hang with you and Mel again in May ;) I had so much fun seeing you guys. And I loved meeting Deekaypee-Debra too.

M.S. Dave - I voted and wasn’t sure can we vote on more than 1? I see you had a family of 4 cheering for you in 2007, I spotted the little guy being carried ;) Nice to see they were/are still enjoying their own Pal :)

Chris I emailed them this past week to see if they would send me a confirmation. Susan signed the 3 of us for the Half on Jan 14th, we were signed up while Cathy, Barb and I waited to see Crush LOL Susan was a busy busy girl maybe just not so much work LOL But Susan doesn’t recall seeing any emails showing the confirmation which drives me nuts. I’m the type who prints the screen shot, prints the emails and then brings them with the waiver LOL I’m a wee bit paranoid. I think they don’t load the verification page until later in the year which again is driving me nuts since I don’t have anything in hand.

Debra I’d be interested in a running/nutritionbook too :)

Angie Woohoo to you and your DH! Were you the one with the new shoes in green? If so did you use them for your 2.5? Glad you were able to get out there!

I’ve been with the slackers! I survived the Marathon well and bounded back better than I thought. Jan 14th I had the usual stiffness I get after doing a race. But last Sunday I did something to my knee and stayed on the sidelines for the week. Well after much whining and post-race moodiness DH (Ray) dragged my tush out to the park and into the snow where I managed to do 4 miles. My 1st mile was horrible! Just under a 19 minute pace as i adjusted to the snow and trying out my knee but ended with an overall pace of 15:25. Each mile got easier. And my knee doesn’t hurt now.

So today kicked off my return to the training field. :) Ok this might be long but I'm sure I'll be bad again until thurs/fri. So stay healthy, PD to those recovering and dealing with injuries and happy training!!!

Kaley

Like Steve I would recommend you to think long term about your situation, especially given your youth. You have so many years when you can do stuff that interests you.

It would be great to do that last Minnie, but if getting your knee fixed would make future efforts and activities easier and more fun, then that may be the way to go.

If you want to talk knees, then I'm the guy. I'm always ready to talk about 1999, in our house known as "the year of the 2 knee surgeries." And yes, I was the lucky person who had them both.

Now that I know you are a fellow soccer guy, when I see you next we can talk shop (Calcio = the beautiful game in Italian). The soccer community in the USA is small and tight, and it's always great to see a member of the group. By the way, those 2 knee surgeries were due to soccer injuries, but the game has given me so much in my life, I could never repay it. And the funny thing is even though I play from age 8 to over 40, I got more from the game off the field than on it.

Angie

I typed up a long reply to you last Thursday, but the system dropped it out and I couldn't re-create it. I know you are fighting injuries and all the other stresses of a young family, but you need to hear that you and Bobby have done so well in the past few months. You've both overcome trials and tribulations and turned in great results 2 weeks ago. I must admit I'm pretty shocked to hear you talk about not being active in your early years, especially with your 9 mpm half marathon pace. Even if you didn't express it earlier, you have a good deal of natural ability, which is likely to produce better and better results in the future. In my earlier life I was juggling hard training with just 1 child, and work, and it is a huge challenge, but you and Bobby have done great, and have better results hanging out there in the future.

Steve

Are you out there? I need you to join team 8 in WWDave's little competition. No pressure, no siree.

Yes I did have the new shoes, thanks for asking I meant to tell everyone they actually worked out great and it made me realize how BAD my other shoes were. :scared1: I felt like I was running on air. Maybe that explains my time. I was running on the clouds :lovestruc Also -- HOW THE HECK do you sun in snow!!! Seriously you guys have my utmost respect :worship: Seriously, when I went out for my run it was upper 60's and beautiful.

To anyone out there venturing out in that kind of weather it really takes determination and motivation. I mean it :lovestruc

Thank you for your response. I only just signed up today, but really wanted to make sure I was registered. I know it takes them a day or two to update everything, but still.

Congrats on your 4 miles!!

Angie--WTG on your run! Can't wait to hear how awesome you do in May!

That's really cool about the volunteering. I found out how much I really liked it at Disney. I was going to register for expo for Sarasota but I'm glad I didn't cause Mark Gunger -- Laugh you Way to a Better Marriage is coming to a church right here in our town. I ALMOST signed up for the expo that morning too!!! He is really funny you should check him out... www.laughyourway.com

And as for May. DH is running so fast right now I don't know if I could catch up with him, plus I am in a dilemma and maybe you could help me. I have a friend who did the 1/2 this year, her first time ever doing ANYTHING like that. I am very proud of her and everything that she accomplished  but I mentioned we were doing MINNIE 15k and and she is doing it too and I don't know if she wants us to run it together, kind of seems that way. But we are on TOTALLY different levels when it comes to pace. So do I kindly explain to here that I want to run faster with DH :confused3 , or do I just run with her. I don't know what to do. n He could care less either way, so I can't really use him as an excuse.

I truly from the bottom of my heart have so much respect for anyone who takes on this challenge and journey that we have all chosen to take. And I REALLY love that everyone is at such different levels and we can help and inspire and motivate each other. But then there comes the time when you have "trained so hard" and want to do your best and see what you as an individual are capable of.

OK SERIOUSLY SORRY for the long post, but this is something that has bothered me for a while. So once again, WISH team, tell me what you think.:confused3

Angie--I completely understand your dilemna. I have had the same thing happen with friends at work, etc. What's great about everyone on our WISH team is that:

1.) There are so many of us that there is bound to be someone with the same pace that we can hook up with.

2.) If we want to run our own races, we all understand that and it is never an issue to break off from a group to run alone.

However, as we all realize, it's not the same outside this team. Especially with friends. I don't know if I have a good answer for you or not. I'm not usually one to want to hurt feelings and come right out to say that I want to run a little faster/slower, but I actually have done this with friends (usually, I wait till race morning to say something, which causes me weeks of undue stress worrying about it) and it's worked out just fine. In fact, I've never had a friend feel bad or even act as if they were disappointed after I've told them.

I guess it also depends if you want to run the race for a PR or just to have fun. If you really want to run faster and your friend is truly a good friend, she'll understand. She probalby already realizes you are on different levels and may not even plan to stick with you.

Ok, I'm just rambling now. Just try not to lose sleep over it. I really feel for you, because I know exactly what you're going through. Hope everything works out!
