Wk of Jan 21--WISH Walking/Running Club

Krista, Colleen, Dave - i was thinking about doing the pig, but i'm doing an all girls team adventure race. It was in april and 2 weeks ago they moved it to may, then i guess they realized they scheduled it for mother's day, so now it is the day of the flying pig!! I've already got my team together and we have been training. Plus, phil is doing the race on his team from last year and they get free entry from winning last yr., soooo i have to be in town anyway! That stinks!!

Dave - tell your potatotatarian "happy birthday" Are you sure that word doesn't have an "e"?:-) I had to clip and paste it just to spell it

I am so frustrated right now. I hope I am just overreacting. Here goes:

I've played sports all my life. Accidents happen. Although I don't like it, I can understand if I'm out of commission because I sprained an ankle, broke a leg, etc. But it's so frustrating when I get sidelined by an injury and I didn't even due anything to warrant the injury!:sad1:

I went to the Podiatrist today to have some (what I thought were) minor issues looked at. The toenail that's still black/purple from the Goofy, the blisters, some numbness in my toes and soreness around my right achilles.

I left the Dr.'s office in tears. The toenail he cut part of it off and said the rest would probably fall off in a month or two. Blisters are almost all healed. So far so good. The numbness in my toes is the result of a neuroma. He said a series of 2-3 shots should eliminate the problem. Then he checked the achilles and said he thinks I ruptured it!:scared1:

I'm scheduled for an MRI next week. Told him I didn't have time to be injured. That I had races to prepare for. He told me I wouldn't be racing anytime soon!:scared1:

I am so bummed:sad1: I planned to give myself the month of Jan. (after the Goofy) off to recover and rejuvenate. Already had my training to train plan worked out to start Feb. 1. Now instead, I'll be getting an MRI.

I thought when you screwed up the achilles, you were unable to walk and in severe pain. I have some discomfort, but nothing major. In fact, the first time it even bothered me was on New Years Day. I was on my feet for a few hours at work and thought it was sore from that. I never fell, twisted it, banged it, turned it or anything. It's been sore ever since, but I finished the 1/2 and 21 miles of the full and that wasn't what knocked me out of the race!

He did say he thinks I ruptured the smaller, connective tendons/tissues. I'm just hoping it's not to major and I'm not out of commission too long. But the Dr. didn't make it sound like that. He's got me thinking a couple months!

Sorry this is so long, I just needed to get it out of my system!

Terri

Terri--sending lots of hugs and PD your way!:grouphug:

Thanks for the xtraining answers. Does weight training count as xtraining??

Oh, and yet another question from me--I have a big stain on one of my fav. running shirts--Can I bleach it w/o compromising the fabric--I guess maybe the stain would show that I actually did run in it!;)

Hey, it's my turn to ask a question. I haven't been into much xtraining recently and I'm wondering where to fit it in to my training schedule. According to my schedule, I'm doing 3-4 SRs a week and then one LR on the weekend. And according to the schedule all the other days are "off days". Any ideas??? I'm respecting the rest days, but I'm wondering if I should sub one xtraining day for the off time????

Well, I better go--DD is screaming at DS about god knows what now!

OK..This is just what I would do.
I am understanding that you are running 4 to 5 times a week (including your LR). I would replace a run with xtraining.
I normally run 3X a week (4-10 mile SR and a LR of 10+ miles) Then I Bike and swim. My schedule kinda looks like this.
Mon - Run
Tues-Bike
Wed - Run
Thurs- Bike/swim or rest (depending on my LR mileage)
Fri - LR
Sat- rest
Sun - Bike if I have time

Terri - I'm so sorry about your appointment. Here is lots of PD:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: I hope the Dr. was completely wrong! Did he say that there was any cross training that you could do?

We must've posted at the same time! Thanks--that's exactly what I was needing!

I WANT TO DO THE PIG...Maybe I could sell all my medals to pay for it! HaHa!

Melissa...If you look at a map while on the TM you ARE doing a trail run.:rotfl: :happytv:

Hi everybody!!

Today I went running for 3.5 miles in 34:01, which is a 9:40 pace. Today it was pretty cold, and my legs felt more stiff than usual while I was running. I made it through my workout in about the same time, but I feel like I struggled to keep the pace today. Tomorrow is a rest day, good thing because the temps are supposed to drop way down tonight and tomorrow, with a high of 19 tomorrow!!!! Way to cold for me! Hopefully it warms up a little bit for my long run on sunday.

Terri-sorry to hear about your appt. Sending pixie dust your way for a quick recovery!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Dave-Happy Birthday to your princess: Isn't it great how easy it is to please kids sometimes-some mashed potatoes and she is happy!! I wish some adults were like that! I work with kids all day and it is so great to see them so happy just to run around and play!

To all who posted the tips on training and nutrition--THANKS!! Nutrition is one area where I need major help with. My eating habits are not so good, but I have to say I am doing my best to cut down on things. For example, I used to drink about 4-5 cans of soda a day. I have cut back to 1 a day, and most days I don't even have one. So, that is a start for me, but I have a long way to go on nutrition!!

Great job to all on your training--keep up the good work!!

I am nutritionally-challenged. I eat a Snickers Marathon Bar before a LR and wash it down with a diet Pepsi. I tend to have sugar issues like Carrie, so I have to have protein and I can't run without eating something beforehand or it gets ugly. I do eat immediately afterward, but still haven't found the right mix. I've tried Slim Fast, but not enough protein. Currently doing cereal with milk. I'd like to try the chocolate milk thing too. I am trying to cut down on caffeine so that Diet Pepsi may go by the wayside...I think it may pop my heart rate too much before a run. Never worried about it til I started wearing the heartrate monitor.

I may be missing my 6 miler this weekend. I was planning to run tomorrow, but DD3 came home with a fever today. We're supposed to go to WDW tomorrow for the Pirate and Princess party but we're going to have to see how she's feeling. Takes a lot to take down the wild todd!

Terri...PD for your foot!

DD14 got her MRI results. New thing is plica syndrome, some kind of anatomic deal that causes knee pain with activity. May or may not be the cause of her pain. But she's clear to do whatever activities she wants until the pain becomes intolerable or too annoying...then it's arthroscopic surgery!

Mel - After running I have a scoop of orange flavored accelerade in about 12 oz of water and add a scoop of vanilla whey protein. Tastes pretty good.

Hey everyone, just got back from the gym, only did 30 mins on the TM I am nursing a new blister and working in new shoes. I did 3.05 miles - 4.9 kms. I even managed to jog 7 mins of the 30.....feelin good.

Gotta go to laundry.

Have a great night all.

Kim

Dave - Aww, too cute! Kids are so much fun.

Terri - Oh, no! That's terrible!! I'm so sorry that you had to get that kind of news at the doctor. I hope you have a speedy and complete recovery.

All right, it's off to the gym for me.

hi Everyone -

Wow, every time I check in there are 3 more pages!

Sounds like there will be quite a crowd of Wishers at the Flying Pig. That one is on my list but not for this year. Its nice timing after Disney though. I will have to remember that.

Kim - I do not eat at all during runs. I rely completely on the science of Gatorade and/or Powerade. I drink as much or little as I need about once every few miles. Even during my long runs. I don't take gels or gu or anything. I usually have a pack of Jelly belly sport beans on me but they are for emergencies only. Some people disagree with this, but it works for me. Thats the key - find what works for you.

Before I run, I usually have half a bagel with a thin layer of cream cheese (I tried doing without the cream cheese but it depressed me.) Oh, and I have to have a cup of coffee. After the coffee, I have a few ounces of gatorade/powerade and off I go.

Now, after I run, I eat something with protein and carbs. Believe it or not, my favorite post run meal is a sliced banana with peanut butter and a glass of milk. When the experts say "carb load" they are actually refering to a relatively small amount of carbs very quickly after you exercise. The speed of when you eat (called the 'window') is actually more important than the amount.

By the way, check the labels of your kids snacks and you might find they have almost the same carb/protein/fat balance as the more expensive "athlete" food. Or maybe I am just mean mom.....

Cecilia

Mel - If you are looking for protein, try accelerade! I use it during all aerobic activity. Also, for protein and cals b/4 and after runs, sometimes (pretty often) i have an ensure plus. (i get sick of those though!)

Just got back from an impromptu trip to the gym... I decided that I wanted to run today after all (and despite my desire to come home and veg out). It was actually one of my better runs, and I feel pretty good!

I don't remember who said it, but I am not as "hard core" as some might think. I just need to have all my goals lined up or else I shut down after the race and wait a year before tackling the next challenge. This way I race, recover, race, recover, train, race, recover, train, race, and I don't have to worry about "maintaining" until winter. It's just how I roll, I guess... Anybody else need to have a constant challenge or goal?

I can't wait to bebop over to the calendar thread... Looks like lots of posts!

I am learning a lot about what people eat and whatnot. Before races I tend to have a bowl of cereal, such as Grape Nuts Trail Mix Crunch, a cup of coffee, some water, a Red Bull, and 2 Excedrine Migraine. I get through quite a bit of a half marathon on caffeine, then I use PowerGels and water throughout the race. I am not sure how this will work with a full marathon, but I'm guessing nobody is going ot sign on to my "unhealthy" race preparation... Please don't tell me I need to change it!

To whoever it was who was interested in the Twin Cities Marathon (sorry that I don't remember names yet), you should come join in the fun at the Twin Cities Running Opener in April. It's a lot of fun, a quick little 8 mile run along the river starting at Boom Island Park. Let me know if you want more info!

Take care, everybody, and keep up the hard work!
Ashley

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Well DD6 princess: had a great birthday. It was very Pooh oriented with a Pooh cake, Pooh balloon, and some Pooh gifts. We got her a t-shirt from Animal Kingdom with Pooh looking at a tiger and saying "Tigger is that you?" The big hit present was a 40" mini-trampoline. They had them at Dick's Sporting Goods after Christmas for $25. When she saw the big box she asked "is it Pooh-ey", and I said "no, more Tigger-y". Our DD6 has so much energy, and this will help her bounce some of it out. The mashed potatoes were a huge hit although I cut a big chunk out of my finger while chopping potatoes. Ooops.

Terri- Rupture achilles!?! :scared1: I really hope that's not true Terri, and maybe it's just some tendonitis. I agree, I thought if you rupture your achilles you hear a pop, and can actually feel where it's ruptured too. Here's sending you lots of PD :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:, and I hope you're not out too long.

Kim- Wow, 3.05 miles in 30 min on the TM. You are moving. How did you do that and only be running 7 minutes? Great job!!!

Cecilia- You are absolutely right about eating and running. Everyone has to find what works for them. Great job on finding what works for you. I know you said you struggled during the marathon, but you finished in your goal time. So obviously you found the combination that worked for you.

Ashley- Good for you for fighting the desire to stay home and veg out. That is a desire I fight all the time. It's so much easier for me to stay home, watch TV, or if I'm at work, just stay at my computer and keep working. Good for you for taking the steps at the gym. I think I said you were "hard core". I definitely know what you mean though about needing to have something lined up to keep the training going. I'm finding it's great to know I have the Flying Pig Half coming up to keep me out there running. And I have to say, I probably wouldn't be doing the Flying Pig if I didn't know I'd be able to meet up with my fellow WISHers.

Mel/Chimera- I hope your daughters are doing better soon. I hope DD3 recovers so you can go to the Pirate and Princess party, and I wish DD14 all the best with the knee pain.

Well it's frigid cold here in Rochester, and we got dumped on with snow. They don't close schools often here, but we may be closed today. Good thing I got that mini-trampoline put together for DD6 princess:. Have a good day all.
