Wk of Jan 15--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everyone,

My PT went okay last night but I was in a ton of pain afterwards. I was told again that my sacrum is out of place. I wanted to say "I know already just fix it!!!" but i didn't :rotfl2:

What got me was that my DR never bothered to send over the xrays. I have to give the info the DR said to me to her and she went by feel. I have another PT apt tomorrow and will be bringing the xrays with me.

The PT is trying to put it in back in place and doesn't know what good the ortho will do for me as Ive already had xrays. I dont know whether to keep that apt or not now :confused3

Hope to have something better to report tomorrow ::yes::

If it makes you feel better--my PT didn't reference x-rays either (in fact x-rays were negative).

I may agree with your PT. If the PT can fix it....then you might be able to save yourself an ortho.

Remember all that I told you ;)--and if PT sounds good...keep the PT. :)

Wow this has been a busy week for me so I haven't had any time to get on the boards until tonight and I see I am 9 pages behind on this weeks thread and I never even finished reading last weeks thread. I'll have to catch up one of these days. I have been getting my walking in but boy what a fluctuation in temps we've been having. Last week one of the days I actually walked twice because it was so beautiful out, 54 and sunny, and today it was sunny but only about 25 and windy. My shins are getting used to hitting the pavement again so I am hoping that our "dry" winter will continue so I can keep walking outside (I hate the treadmill). I am still debating between the half and the full but leaning more towards the half. I am also probably going to be doing the Chicago Distance Classis in August. I can't believe it but I just ordered a Garmin on Amazon tonight for $99.00 and free shipping and I am so excited. A few years ago if someone would've told me I'd ever be excited about anything to do with distance walking/running I'd have thought they were crazy and tonight I am extremely excited about ordering a Garmin :rotfl: Still working on eatin better. One step at a time.
Hope to get back here more often next week. We are going away this weekend to Schaumburg, IL for some shopping and rest and I'm going to throw my walking clothes in to take along.

Christa and Sunny, I am interested in the WW program. Do you both actually weigh in and attend meetings? I am not familiar with the point thing, is it easy to use?

Also, Christa and Bree, your endurance amazes me. The goofy thing and all, BUT when you add in the fact that you both ran the Charlotte marathon a month earlier (with a great time, I might add), your feat was awesome!

Does anyone have a Spring marathon on the docket? I was thinking about running one in April, May time frame.

Colleen
Colleen - You are so sweet! Thanks for the encouragment! I do WW online. The meetings do not fit into my very busy life! My sister and a few friends share our weight and everything daily/weekly. So we keep eachother on track.
Spring marathon???HMMMM I want to do Myrtle Beach Marathon in Feb to beat my 4:25 Charlotte time. I know I could do 4:18 on a flat course (for some strange reason this is my goal for the year :confused3 ). The Charlotte marathon course was VERY hilly! Not kidding...I think it was uphill allthe way until the last 2 miles. Then it was down...and that hurt even worse! :scared: But I don't think DH will go for it. Something about $$$?
So I must just focus on the tri in March. And will do the local halfs so I can turn in a time if I sign up for WDW again.

Lisa -- if you were tyring to dissuade me from being impressed, you failed miserably :teeth: Now, I'm more impressed than ever. And don't even get me started on how impressed I am by Mel, and Melissa, and Sunny and . . . well, you get the picture!

Cheryl -- You are going to love your Garmin! Welcome back, BTW!

Minnie -- Good luck!

Thanks for asking about Howard. He had xrays today and a dr. appt tomorrow when they'll decide whether to remove the stent and determine whether the stone is small enough or needs to be blasted again. The great news is that he got a fabulous job offer last night! After 7+ months of being "between jobs" he is very excited about getting back to work. The only problem is I see this having a huge detrimental impact on his training as he will be working about 7:45 am - 6:30 pm M-F. Not much time in there for training. Our lives are about to change drastically as we all try to get used to him not being available to take care of so much he has been handling. I am glad, though, to see that someone appreciates what he has to offer!

There are a couple of marathon's here in the next few months! There is Hogeye (which is insanely hillly!) in Fayetteville, about 25 minutes south of me and Little Rock Marathon, which has the biggest finishing medal of any marathon.

Check this linkwww.arkansasrunner.com

PLEASE COME AND DO ONE WITH ME!!!!!! There are also the 2 50ks one is free the other is 45bucks. You can find them at runarkansas.com

I just have to say, when MelR told me about this one in person, with her accent I thought she said Hogeye in Fatville!!!! :rotfl2: I replied, "Did you say Fatville????"

Colleen, I do WW meetings. I lost 68 lbs with WW at Work over a 10 month span and now I do the monthly "Life Time" WIs. Of course I make up my own points range to fit my training. I have done some pretty insane things to make my LT WIs. (They require you to be no more than 2 lbs above your goal weight or you have to pay, otherwise its free). I've actually weighed my clothes on a digital kitchen scale to see what's lightest, taken off my glasses and watch and even (I'm so ashamed to admit this) ran without hydrating right before WI. :scared: (I only did that twice). But my New Race Resolution will have me making my monthly WI without tricks!!!!!!

MelR-- I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who tries to pose for the cameras during a race! My problem is that I don't actually lift my feet when I run. I don't think they clear the ground more than 2", so when I see the cameras I start bouncing my knees up in the air in an attempt to look like I'm really running! I think it is awsome that you have the Boy getting use to biking so soon. I haven't been very successful with DS yet. But he did AWSOME in his first Jujitsu class since vaca. I was psyched, they played a pumped up disco version of a Disney medely for the warm up. How cool is that?

Lisa-- I have to go with Cam, you're Team in Training fund raising alone is a marvel. I'm amazed!

Minnie-- I'm hoping for a better report, too :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Lynn-- So my guess on the body temp/swimming thing was right! It makes sense. Us northerners know all to well how the cold winter causes carb cravings.

Honeibee-- Treadmill pushing :rotfl: :rotfl2: I think you just invented a new form of cross training!!!!!!! Its too bad we can't convert all the energy we expend on the treadmill into electricity. We could power our houses for free!

I feel lousy. My chest is tight, sore throat and burning lungs. Waaaaa. I'm thinking DS was a really good sport, 'cause he already had this and didn't complain. I'm having a hard time not letting everyone around me know how awful I feel!

Sunny

I feel your pain and hope you feel better soon! I thought I had kicked a bug two weeks ago but it seems to be coming back. My throat hurts too and my nose and my head and inhalers for asthma have been in constant use every 4 hours. BLECH!!!!

The good news is I've still been able to workout quite a bit but haven't done any runs this week. My arch is also starting to heel so maybe by Saturday that will be healed and running can become the focus again.

Well the tri training has officially begun!!!!! We went swimming last night. Luckily the girl I'm training with is the same "skill" (if you can even call it that) level that I am. We didnt even think about brining goggles so I was swimming laps while holding my head above water. That added to the fatique. I did 300 yds which for me is ALOT! It went o.k. considering how out of practice I am.

Sunny-hope you get better soon! :wizard:

Lisa-I agree with Cam, majorly impressed :worship: And to have a babysitter that is willing to be there at 5:15, wow!

I'm hoping to make it to the gym today to do the bike. If not, I'll just do pilates & stepper at home.

Sunny- I felt like you last week! After WDW I ALWAYS get sick! Rest and relax...you have earned it!
I also have gone to the extreem (sp?) with WW when I did it at work! (Sunny, this includs the running w/out hydrating :p ) And I also pose for the camras..that is why it looks like I am always smiling during a marathon....however, my plan did not work @ WDW this year b/c all my pics look like I am getting ready to throw up. :confused3 I don't get it...I felt great!

Lynn-Thanks for the swimming info! I understand this...will tri to get warm after so I wonn't gain weight from swimming. :rotfl:

Just had to post this pic 'cause it means the world to me.

I metntally told myself during teh dreaded 18 to 22 that I just needed to get to MG, then there'd be characters. Then to the BW, then there'd be WISHers. If you look for the lime green, you'll see Cam, Howard and Mel all sporting their medals. Oh what a feeling.

WOW!!! there are so many posts up here for me to get through!! Work's been crazy, so I haven't had quite the amount of time to spend here as I'd wish :-)!!

I am amazed by all of you guys training for Tri's! There's no way I'd have the time (or energy or strength, I think :-))!! Good luck!!

So, I think I have some sort of cold or virus or something-- I still wake up early (and then feel fine), go for my workouts, and then my 9 AM, I feel like I've been run over by a truck and start going through boxes of kleenex. I'm fortunate in that I never get really really sick when I get sick, but I'm always wondering "am I really sick, or do I just feel horrible?" when I am. I never know I'm sick until I get better, and then realize, "oh, I must have been actually sick." Oh well, a few more days and hopefully it will be gone :-)!!

I wanted to say that you all inspire me so much. Since finishing the 1/2 and not being in pain like I was last year I am even now more motivated to start running. I jogged just a little during the 1/2 to give my legs a break from the walking. I took a few days off right after the 1/2 but have been walking at the track or on the TM everyday. I think I am ready to start adding in a little bit of running but just don't know how to begin. Any suggestions from your wonderful books of knowledge?

Good morning everyone,

I am enjoying reading all the posts. You all truly keep me excited.

I am on my second, first week of Hal Higdon's 5k running program. I started last week in the middle, so I repeated it this week. The 8 week program will bring me to the March 18 St. Patty's Day 5k in Chicago.

I have a history of walking, yoga, pilates - but nothing consistent. I have always wanted to be a runner and never thought I was able to do it. I know I have just begun, but for the first time, I feel really proud of my workouts. I am running an easy mile and a half on the track. I never thought it could feel easy. The funny thing is, I am more nervous about my first 5k than I am about doing the disney half.

I am so glad that I have found the WISHers. :)
Maggie

Tammy, I know there are a couple "couch to 5Ks" available on the web (I think coolrunning.com has one)-- they are designed to take you from no running, to walking, to running. When I started running (about 8 years ago), I had a trainer who worked up a schedule for me-- it started out with about 1 minute running to 5 minutes walking. It was *horrible,* and I pretty much quit. I ended up taking some time and getting into better shape by doing things that I could do like walking and step aerobics. Then, I tried the running again. I think I started running at 15 seconds running to every 4 min, 45 secs. walking, and built from there. Pretty soon, I was running constantly, and my intervals were faster running to slower running.

I sure wish I was still there :-)!!!

Anyways, I think what you need to do is figure out what works best for you-- my opinion is that intervals of walking/running is the best way to get up to more running. I would experiment with different intervals and see where you feel most comfortable. Don't be discouraged if you can't run much at first-- your body needs to learn so much more, including breathing and muscle movement and everything! You're already in super shape with walking, so you'll be there in no time!

Maggie-- good luck with your 5K!! I really like Hal Higdon's programs! You'll be signing up for more races as soon as this 5K is here!!

Tammy - MfM has walk/run and run/walk plans that should work. Why not just start my walking 4 min and running 1 and just slowy increas r minutes and decrease w minutes?

Just jumping in here for a minute to say "good morning" to everyone!

I, like so many here, have a cold or sinus thing and feel lousy much of the day. I'd like to think that rather than being worn down with lowered resistance to germs, that I am actually healthier than I might otherwise be and am NOT as sick as I could be.

I was talking to my Aunt last night and telling her how awesome marathon weekend was and what it was like to finally meet a lot of you, to hear cheering on the 1/2 course from people I knew and didn't know, and to then cheer for everyone during the full (Carrie -- that picture brings back so many happy memories!), and I got choked up all over again. :grouphug: I cannot tell you guys how much you all mean to me. I think of you all every day and wonder how you are doing, how your training is going, how Christa's and Lisa's and Rhonda's and Sunny's and Melissa's and Mel's and everyone else's children are doing. I think about what an awesome example we are setting for our kids. Working to get or stay fit, setting goals, accomplishing them, supporting others, etc. and I realize how much you have all helped me change my life in the past year.

Sorry for the sap, but I really, really, just want to thank you all and WISH you a great day.

Geez, I started writing this an hour ago and got distracted by work. Goodness knows what posts I've missed in the interim! :teeth:

Cam - AAWWW, you're making me tear up!!

Sunny - Holy moly. I had no idea you lost so much on WW. Congrats!!

I'm home nursing the cold thing today, so probably only a weight workout.

Carrie - Love the pic. The WISHer's at mile 24 gave me the lift I needed to get to the finish line also. Last year my DH and kids were in about the same spot, so it was sentimental too.

Best of luck to everyone training for tri's and spring marathons. I may do the Lake Placid 1/2 marathon on 6/11 as it is local for me. I can't imagine NOT doing something else before the DL 1/2.

Rest up! Hope you feel better soon.

I was only gone over night and I have so much to catch up on! :flower:

First off...Cam....OMG OMG! You are sooooo sweeeeet! :lovestruc Thank you so much for the phone message last night. I didn't call you back because I didn't get it until very late. I don't call people after 9:00pm unless it's an equine emergency. :teeth: But thank you soo much for thinking of us! We actually had our electricity back by the time I got home from work last night. This is amazing because first off we have a 940' driveway with trees on both sides. There were limbs everywhere but the lines were still up. Also, our neighbor right next door had no power! We just got lucky I guess. Surrounding towns are totally without power, even this morning. So we still went out for dinner and then food shopping. Our usual Wed night date. :rotfl2: But thank you so much Cam for checking on us. I was really touched by that.

And BTW you are NOT sappy. Remember who was balling her eyes out up here in New York while I was getting text messaged splits about people I haven't even met yet! I totally understand where you are coming from. For some reason, for many reasons, doing this is so very special to me. It may be the support, the comraderie, how we all care so much about each other. That combined with the fact that this is the one time I can ever remember doing something just for me! Plus it's that Disney thing that manages to touch our hearts somehow. Combine all that and it sure makes WISH training very very special. :wizard:

And for Howard....Congratulations on the new job! :cheer2:

Tiff - :rotfl: About the aliens. Way to go with the swimming!

xterratri - I think you are right...It IS a good thing. :goodvibes

Colleen - Thank you so much. I got all my enthusiasm from HERE though! :teeth:

LLP - Ooohhh, very interesting. Thanks for the website. I'm going to check it out. :wave2:

Minnie - My PT was AWESOME and worked real miracles. I hope it does the same for you. :wizard:

Sunny - I wish I could power the house with the treadmill! That's an excellent idea! I'll have to mention that to my inventive DH. :scratchin

Carrie - Thanks for the pic! Very exciting! :bounce:
