Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everyone! I should be getting ready for bed, but instead I'm posting on the boards which means I'll be up for at least another hour. I'm going to so pay for this tomorrow morning!! I'm trying to decide if the sharp pain on the outside of the bone on my foot was caused by my running shoes or the 4 inch heels I wore to work today. Ah, the price we pay for beauty. :cutie: On the training front, I ran my 3 miles tonight, again it felt really good and again I was tempted to up the pace and the intervals but after reading CJ's quote, I'm glad that I'm playing it safe for now. What good is it going to do me to run 3 or 4 miles a couple of minutes faster but irritate my IT band again for the Pig?

Jen--Way to go on your pace! That is excellent!!

Mike--I will gladly give up all of my :wizard: 's for your wife!!! I hope she continues to feel better!!

Craig--Since you are our resident running guru (;) ) I'll ask you, but if anyone else knows the answer, please chime in. How are some ways I can be sure that I'm running efficiently? Other than video-taping myself run and watching it back? (Which I may end up doing.) I know I don't naturally have a bio-mechanically efficient foot, (I over pronate on my right foot, which I think is contributing to the IT band problems), but how do I make sure that I'm running the best of my ability with what I've got? I listen to my foot strikes to make sure they aren't too heavy, I've shortened my stride and take "baby steps" when I run, and I also run with my middle finger lightly pressing my thumb to keep my upper body loose. Is there anything else I can do?

Mel--I forgot to congratulate you earlier on passing your exam!! :yay: :yay: :yay: Now can you write me a prescription for Valium so I can get some sleep at night???? :thumbsup2

Dave--Blech!! Water is my nemisis!!! pirate: pirate: pirate:

I better head up to bed, Stephen is already there and Hines is sleeping on his blanket on the floor. Why oh why did I start that habit???? I swear my dog thinks he's a person!! Maybe that's a little bit my fault. :cloud9: Good night everyone!!

=Honeibee;17145137]
Mike - I'm glad to see you! :wizard: for DW. :rotfl: "mean as a snake" :lmao:

Judy - I think you've cross-pollinated us Mikes. Goofyguy Mike's wife gets the PD. My daughter is mean as a snake (not to say that Goofyguy Mike doesn't have a mean daughter, I just haven't seen him mention it).

BTW, Goofyguy Mike - great pace on the run. Even better being able to add extra distance after taking off like lightning.

Today's LR day for me. 13 miles slated. Weather is supposed to be pretty good and we've actually melted enough that I'll be hitting the great outdoors.

Good luck to everyone with your training.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

I did 5 miles on the TM yesterday in 46:50 min/9:22 mpm pace. I had the TM set on 6.4 the entire time. It was a relaxed run, but I was getting pretty tired the last 2 miles.

Stephanie- Congrats for signing up for the Minnie and the Full marathon.

Laurie- Skiing sounds like a lot of fun. Wow, I'm surprised it's not more crowded though with New York having the week off of school. I guess if people are going anywhere, they're going somewhere warm though. Have fun.

Mike/Goofyguy- Whoa, you knocked out a 6:40 miles? 6.33 miles in 7:57 mpm pace!!! :worship: You're smokin'. I'm impressed with your speed. Great job. Training for the Pig 1/2 is going pretty well. For my running, I'm doing two 5 mile SRs, 1 hill workout, and a LR during the week. This weekend I'm planning on doing 12 miles for my LR. I'd love to finish the 1/2 in a sub 2 hour pace, but we'll see. I'm hoping I can hitch up to Steve, and he can pull me along. Are you still planning on running the Broad Street 10 miler? I hope your wife is doing well in her recovery.

Craig- I was listening to your advice yesterday, and trying to lessen my heel strike while I ran. I think I'm a really heavy heel striker, and I'm trying to roll quicker onto my midfoot. I think I sounded a little less elephant-like on the TM. Congrats on registering for the marathon. Are you staying at the Boardwalk this year? If I can manage to swing a trip to the marathon again, I'd like to stay in the Boardwalk area this time. I had never seen that area before running though it for the marathon, and it looked like a lot of fun.

Kristi- Rest up, sounds like you are getting a little run down. Don't overdo and get yourself sick.

Andrew:welcome: again. I know we welcomed you before, but hey, we can welcome a new screen name too. Have fun with your new TM.

CJ- Thanks for the marathon quote. Always a good thing to remember. Good job on the TM, have fun tomorrow.

Hi Krista :wave2: 4 in heels??? Whoa, there's no way I could walk in those - I would topple over.

Mike/Optimator- How'd the 13 miler go? What are you training for right now? Was it a full marathon in Frederick, MD?

OK, have a great day everyone!

4 in heels??? Whoa, there's no way I could walk in those - I would topple over.
And how exactly do you know you would topple over, Dave???

I would SO pay to see you in 4" heels! :lmao:
Scratch that - I'll pay to see you in 1" heels! :lmao:
I'd pay even more if you wear Lily's awesome new pink camo skirt with the heels! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Wait...what about Mel's lime green underarmour thong? :scared1:

(ok, I am really tired. that's my excuse & I am sticking to it!)

Hmmmmm, maybe I see my Flying Pig uniform coming together... I think we have to work a sports bra in there somewhere too right?

Hello Christa

I assume since you are so light and so fast (flattery always works:rolleyes: ) that you strike pretty much on your mid foot and then lift quite a bit off of your toes when you push off. Especially in your marathon efforts. I would be really surprised if your strike was on your toes, then you rocked back a bit, then you lifted off from your toes again.

My visualization from Stephanie's description was the latter. Toes, midfoot, toes again. I cannot imagine that technique wouldn't tear the calfs up since they would be absorbing all the shock of impact. Plus the rock back to the midfoot would shift the forward momentum back, then forward again, which must slow the speed of turnover.

If my opinion of the toe-strike-teaching-father irritated you in any way, my apologies.

Well I have my marathon registration form out and I am completing it. I booked the room for January 9 through 17, 2008, so I'll see you all again early next year.

Please, cool weather, please.

Craig

Flattery gets you everywhere! HaHa! Actually, I had not even read through all the posts when I posted about the toe strike. And you could never irritate me. You are right on about the dangers though.
My DDs, little nephews, and I all walk and run "up on our toes".:confused3 Like we are dancers or something. You are may be right about the striking on the mid foot and lifting thing. I will try to pay attention today when I run. OOOH, but you cannot even hear me coming when I run!;)

Lily - I love the skirt!

Dave it is Kick'n Chicken...not Lick'n Chicken.....You may need help on my messed up Southern tawk (talk).:rotfl: 4 inch heels???? What is up with that?

SOME WEEKS I HATE WORK! :headache: Enough said!
Sorry that I did not get to everyone! I must start my day so I can get to my 1st appointment at work. Does working get in the way of anyone's training?:lmao:

Krista

That's a good question. I suspect the only real way to critique our own running technique is to watch ourselves on tape. That would be be pretty humbling, as I'd ask, "do I really look like that?" I think using stable shoes to correct for your over-pronation, running light (easy for you, you are light) and running relaxed are big steps. Do you get your IT problems on 1 side only? Do you run mostly on roads and that side is with toward the curb or towards the road most of the time? Quite often IT issues (and my hip bursitis) flare up when you are running on a slope and 1 side is high or low consistently. If this describes you be sure to switch directions so the low/high sides switch.

And stretch the IT all the time, not just before or after runs, but several times a day. I don't always do this, and I can tell when I've neglected the stretch regime as my hip gets sore.

Dave

I think shortening your strides may reduce the pounding and actually increase your tempo. In the 1990's when Michael Johnson was producing that string of gold medals and world records I watched him a lot, and he was all about shorter strides and faster turnover. Watching him blow by other world class runners you'd see he took shorter strides but his turnover was much quicker. As I got older and the pounding began to hurt more and more I did try to shorten my strides a bit and be a little quicker on the turnover. I have noticed on the treadmills in crowds that I'm much quieter than the typical male, so I suspect that I'm hitting the treadmill with less force than others. When I'm outside and trying to do some speed work I try to hold this technique, not striding longer, but striding the same distance and just picking up the tempo.

It has seemed to work for me, as I've not had a major calf blow up since the middle of last year. I have noticed that when I push hard and really lift off my toes I get injured, so now I try to drive more with my quads, letting them do most of the work, and let the calfs and lower leg do relatively less.

FWIW that's been my experience in the last 3 years as I've gotten back into running a bit more seriously.

Cheers

Craig

 :scared1: You've already booked your room? Yikes, I am way behind. Has Disney released the percent full levels for the half and full yet? I haven't registered because I really don't know how things will go. I've asked Paul if he wants to do the half again but he won't commit one way or the other. It's so expensive to register us both (him- half, me-full) if the trip won't work out.

Now I'm panicking!!!!!!!

Judy-- I don't hate my job, I just hate working;)

Kathy-- Hello! It was great meeting you IRL at the half.

Jen-- Congrats on that mega long run interval. You are smokin':smokin:

Krista-- I'm no expert, but considering my past speed (pre-Levaquin) and my size, I'd say I must run pretty efficiently. What I noticed when my DD ran with me is that she bounces up and down a lot with almost wild swings of her arms. It seemed to me that she was using way too much energy that way. My feet barely leave the ground with little bounce (other than... well, refer to my size again:rolleyes: ) Have you ever read Chi Running? I did and haven't worked hard to incorporate the technique, but I do pay attention to my posture and arm cirlces. It may be useful to read.

I must have missed something. Why is Dave wearing 4" heels?

Andrew (Sir_Bouncealot)-- you and DW must be with Cam in da house:rotfl2:

Hopefully, I'll get all the screen names and IRL names straight soon. I think I've been confusing Hockeychic and Hockeygirl. Then we've got Mike and Mike, Kathy and Kathy, and there's Krista, Christa and Kristi... And when y'all change your avatars my head spins!

I'm a bear of very little brain.

I did xt on the elliptical yesterday and a little bit of weights. I didn't bring my gym bag today so don't know if I'll go after work or if today will be my rest day.

Sunny

Craig--I may end up having to tape myself, but that thought makes me :scared:. It was bad enough watching the 30 seconds my parents recorded of me running the marathon!! I do wear stability shoes--New Balance 857's, but I'm thinking of switching to the Mizuno Alchemy Wave or the Asics Gel Kayano. I only have IT band issues on my right leg (knock on wood, no pain since the marathon) and I run mostly on the treadmill, but sometimes I run at a running park or in my neighborhood where I run down the middle of the streets and not on the shoulder. As you can see, I am a mess!!! :teeth: Congrats on registering for the marathon.

Dave--You will be happy to know that I am drinking water right now. ;) Oh, and I am wearing flats today. Are you??? :tiptoe:

Sunny--Thanks for the tip on Chi Running, I will definitely check that out.

Kristi--If Dave wears all that to the Flying Pig, I am definitely taking pictures!! And I WILL post them!!!

Happy Birthday Solo!!!!! Hope this is the start of a great new year for you!!!!!

Dave & Kristi! :lmao: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: May have to convince dh to get to flying pig with a camera for me now. Or perhaps one of you could havea web cam to transmit to us Minnie-ers?

Krista - You really should watch your everyday shoes and take fcare of your feet. COuld you at least stick to 2"??? :scared1:

Sunny - I've seen nothing on percent full yet. Don't wait too long on those ressies, though. You can always canel on those if somethign doesn't work out.

Stephanie - "pull a Carrie" :sad2: Yeah, that's the only way I'll ever be famous. :rotfl:

Andrew - Like the new name! I still fee like I shoud say Welcome, though. ;)

Craig - From your lips to God's ears. Please be cool next year!

OK, I missed a lot, but I really do have to get some work done.

BTW, very windy today. Hopefully, that means a dry bike path tonight! Now, if it could stop for our run, though. 25 mph winds are not fun to run in.

PS - Skirts: If you figure that they have the compression pants built in adn that you can get up to 3 pair at 45% off if you turn in a pair of shorts, it's not that bad.

:bday: party: Happy Birthday Kevin! :cake: party:
:genie:
Here's someone to grant you some birthday WISHes!
:genie:

All my best
:cake: :bday:

Have a great one! Hope to see you 'round here more often when the dust all settles.:wizard:

(and don't worry, we won't let Dave get all the cute outfits:lmao: )

Sunny

WE got a foot this last storm...DH shoveled while I stayed in and walked on my tm:goodvibes

Mel...congrats on another 6 yrs., that must be a load off your mind. By the way, we're still waiting for the pictures.

I almost have my buddy, from Ca., talked into walking the marathon w/me..she is a heavy smoker, so I'm not sure how that's going to work for her. She wants to run it, but there is no way I can do that. We'll see.

Just a side note to share my good news.....first I'm going to be a grandma  in June, it's our first so I'm looking forward to spoiling her. 2nd, I've lost 15 pds. so far!:yay:

Angie: congratulations on the job!! :woohoo:

Lily: I LOVE the skirt and you model it very well! :teeth:

Cam: absolutely find those custom orthodics and break them in again slowly. I had some made a couple years ago and it really did take me about a month and a second visit to get them right. Unfortunately insurances doesn't pay for the orthodics and due to the way my HMO is constructed, insurance won't pay for me to go to the sports podiatrist. And I really need to be re-evaluated.

Carrie: great pictures of the arctic tundra! :rotfl2: We'll be wanting some of that come August!! And great job on the 10:28 pace! :woohoo: But I'm going to have a VERY difficult time keeping up with you during Minnie. I need to get moving faster....

Monte: how much snow did you get with the recent storm and how much in on the ground? Did you get some snow shoeing in over the weekend?

DreamBeliever: I am SO jealous that you got outside! Not much chance of that here for a while.

Day with my trainer today. She is merciless but I love every minute of it. Cardio work and weights. Tomorrow I'll do some cardio to keep the hip loose.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

monica - :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: Congratulations!!!!

sunny - :lmao: :lmao: saving a cute outfit for Kevin!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

and

:cake: Happy Birthday Kevin! :cake:

On the skirts - I ordered the black & "smooch" on V-Day so it was 50% :thumbsup2 Otherwise I'd never have paid what they wanted for a skirt :scared1: Keep your eyes peeled and I bet there will be another sale. Hoping there turn around time on an exchange is quick as I really want to wear my new outfit to the gym.

As for last night so much for saying I was going to get to run outside  I was at work nearly 12 hrs so by the time I left it was way too dark to even think about running outside. I ended up a couch potato instead :guilty:

WISHing for a better night!

Happy Birthday Kevin. You're living proof that you can get a lot faster while getting just a little bit older.

Krista - You really should watch your everyday shoes and take fcare of your feet. COuld you at least stick to 2"??? :scared1:

I'm only 5'1, I need all the help I can get!! I only have a couple of big heeled shoes, the rest are probably only an inch or 2.

Monte-- CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is awesome.

Speaking of babies, how's Lynnda doing???
