Wk of Feb 18--WISH Walking/Running Club

GG1958 -- sending :goodvibes: and pixiedust: to your DW for a complete recovery very soon. Great workouts, though! So glad to see you doing well with your training.

Kristi -- you GO, girl!!!! AWESOME, AWESOME job running 1/2 mile! You must be so excited and proud of yourself! :woohoo: Sorry I don't know anything about the Tread Climber, so no advice to share.

Hi everyone---this is a really quick drive by post as I am on vacation this week. DBF and I are in Lake Placid for some skiing!!! Today we went XC skiing for 3 hours straight. I was exhausted!!!!!! Today was the first time I ever went XC skiing and I absolutely love it!!! It was quite a workout. So, I am using that as my workout for today. According to my training plan, I am supposed to do 3 miles today, but I think the XC skiing will have to take the place today.

Tomorrow we are heading to Whiteface MT. to go downhill skiing! I can't wait, the conditions are supposed to be great!

I will try to check in more at some point to catch up with everyone!

Angie -- I ordered the pearl with pink straps and they arrived SUNDAY!! I also ordered tinkerbell and Minnie jibbitz for Minnie weekend, of course! However, I kind of wish I'd ordered the pink. Howard characterized this color as grey and he is pretty close. Not really so much an off-white as maybe a dirty-snow! :confused3 Thanks for the positive feedback on the 5k's. The only problem is that my distances are supposed to be longer on all those dates in training for the Minnie. So, I will have to force myself to make up the difference each weekend.

I am glad your calves are a bit better. Don't forget to stretch really well so that you don't end up with charliehorses. You may even want to consider rubbing your calves a bit to stretch those muscles before you put them to the test. Good luck! :thumbsup2

Really? They sure looked white online. It took me forever to decide which ones to order, and I was very close to ordering the white with pink straps. I'm glad I went with the pink ones.

How are you going to make up your distances? Two-a-days? Best of luck with that!

I hadn't thought about rubbing the calves before walking tonight. I'll definitely give that a try. Thanks for the tip!

Carrie – Melting at 60? Texas is definitely not the place for you!

Goofy Guy – Best wishes for your wife’s recovery!pixiedust:

Kristi – WTG!! :woohoo:

Laurie – Glad y’all are having a fun!

Coffee adn coke after arces? Yuck. Water in Poweradfe is al lI can handle. DH would like his COke with bacon and eggs, though!

Scott is my kinda guy!!! I drink Diet Coke from the moment I wake up until I brush my teeth to go to bed. I'd drink it during a run if I could!! Yum Yum!!! I'm going to go into serious withdrawls when I get pregnant. :sad2:

Kristi--CONGRATULATIONS!!!   That is awesome!!!

GoofyGuy--Thanks for stopping by and saying hi. I'm sending more :wizard: for your DW. :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: I hope she is able to get back to work soon!!

Claire--Good to see you agai. We sort of ran the marathon together, although I don't think you realized that I was a Wisher. You left me in your dust around mile 9 when my IT band exploded and I had to slow my pace wayyyyy down . I was glad to see that you got all of your medals. Congrats!!

Lily--Cam is right, you are the official Wish model......

I knew I liked you for a reason! Another diet coke addict here. :wave2: I drink one at 4am when I get to work. Some days I have 6 or more cans. It's really bad, and I need to work on that.

If I remember correctly, I think I was 'allowed' one diet coke per day when I was preggo. Of course, every other week the powers that be change their minds on caffeine & diet products with pregnancy. Try cutting back now maybe. That was part of why I gained 45 lbs. (and was overweight to begin with :sad2: ) - I would drink a 'real' coke if I was desperate, and lots of juice since I was trying not to have 'diet' things.

Lily -- I double dog dare you! I have pix of you in my photo album in the WISH tee shirt and the WISH socks. What do you think of being the fashion model for the latest WISH gear? ;)
bwwahhhhh haha oh my! :lmao: :lmao: That's not even funny!

Guess what came in the mail today?

The running skirt that was on sale. No zebras to model though. Pink wasitband, skirt, sausage shorts with pockets! I'll let ya know how they workout.

Someone else will have to model the zebras...

I thinking about taking the next 2 weeks off from any running. I've run 3 1/2 marathons in the past 4 months. My next marathon is not until Fall and I will start training in May.

I'm thinking it might be good to just give the old muscles and bones time to rest. Some have been sore for a long time.

After two weeks of just walking I'll go back to running my standard 20 miles per week until training begins.

Is there any benefit to doing this? Is there any harm to doing this?

What do you think?

Lily - love the skirt!!! It looks great on you. Mine is waiting for me in San Antonio, to pick up in two weeks when I go visit (cheaper to ship it there than to Canada....sneaky...). Let me know how you like it!

Holy Cow!!

Now I know why everyone has such a hard time keeping up with this thread!!

I'm sorry to do this quick but I wanted to say:

Jim - I have never run that many races back to back and I have never taken that much time off but I would think it would be of great benefit. Some of our best runs when I have seen the most improvement was just after we had a week where we just could not run as much as we wanted. I think your body will thank you for it!

KRISTI - :cool1: THAT'S AWESOME!! On your run. WAY TO GO!!!

MEL - CONGRATS!!!

And thanks for all the well wishes on Job Interview and TXAng - thanks for asking;

I GOT THE JOB!!!:scared1:

That's me terrified!!! My first real Engineering job! I think I'm going to throw up!! :dance3: Even though I don't graduate till May I'm going to get a few hours in a week getting my feet wet!!

No training again today! I will start back tomorrow!

I'm so sorry no time to catch up with everyone else. I will try to catch up tomorrow.

Angie

Mel

Congratulations on passing so you can practice for 6 more years. Sorry, I know this is an old joke (and the old jokes are the best jokes), but when will you be ready to perform?

Krista

Early May for the Pig doesn't work for me. Classes end the week before and final exams start the next day. At that time of year I'm pretty much a wreck, always on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Luckily this state of mind hasn't caused me to get the shave-your-head-and-get-tattooed-thing, well at least not yet.

Carrie

Great pics of running in the cold and snow. As much as I'm a wimp and don't go out in the cold anymore, and as proved this last January in Orlando, I'm a cold weather runner when I want to perform (there's that word again!). My long distance PR's were all run in mid-30's temperatures wearing shorts, one long sleeve top layer, gloves and hat. My body generates heat like crazy, helpful in the cold, almost deadly in the heat. I do remember the night before this year's marathon Cam asked me what I'd do the next day. I told her "I'll go out too fast, blow up in the heat, and DNF." The first 2 happened and #3 nearly did.

I did get to the fitness center for a good bike today. This illness is roaring through campus. I probably had 1/5 of my students out today and 1 poor kid is in Mass General. The darn thing just won't let go.

Best to all. Train hard for those who want or need it, and train easy for those who have been pounding it.

Craig

Carrie, I don't think I'd want to see anyone in those either.

Jim, take the break and back down as much as you need, your body needs it. You are in great shape training-wise so when you are ready to begin for your next event, you'll be better healed when your training begins.

Claire, great to have you back.

Angie, congratulations! Great news.

Mike, I'm sorry that DW is still out. I hope she is feeling better. We miss you, I hope you can get to stop by here more soon.

Craig, good for you to get the gym and bike. That has to be better than jumping on the run after you've not been well isn't the best choice. You are so tuned in to make the better choice. Stay well. Spring break can't come soon enough to give everyone a breather.

I did get to the gym for my w/o. I had every intention of doing elliptical, alas it was not meant to be. They were all taken, then I go on TM and it was not operable and all others were taken, then I go on recumbant bike and it was not working. It seemed that everything was not working for me tonight. Soooo, I took the first piece that opened up which was TM. I did a 4 mi in about 60 minutes. I kinda felt the band along my leg this time it traveled a bit below my knee...just a twinge but it's still there. So I'll back off TM again for a longer time. I did a lot of stretching after too.

Lily - Ooh, love the skirt!

Angie - CONGRATULATIONS!!! :cool1: That's awesome news! They're having you start right away? That's really nice, that way you can kind of ease into it. Yay! :thumbsup2

Lily--that skirt is so cute! Now I'm WISHing that I would've ordered one! Oh well--now DH will just have to pony up for full price!

Angie--Great news on the job!! Congrats!!!

craig--sounds like illness is running rampant everywhere. I had to call in sick for some training I was going to do last night (pseudo-part time work),and the pharmacy supervisor said half the city is sick!

Well, I actually did make it to the gym tonight for a little workout--glad it's taper time, so I can just take it easy. Did my 3 miles at a conservative pace. Was totally grossed out though, b/c the guy next to me was spraying sweat all over the place, the floor, all over the treadmill. It got really close to spraying on me--I might've died right there if it had. I don't mind sweating, but I don't want anyone else's on me!

Well, now DH isn't feeling well, so it's off to play dr. (nothing dirty!;) ) Night all!

Angie - Congratulations on the job! :yay:

Lily - Great skirt, and wonderful modeling job.

Carrie - You are much tougher than I am. I look at those pictures and pull the blanket around me. NO WAY would I even think about starting that race!

Mel - Congratulations on passing your exam. :cheer2:

Judy - You have more motivation than you think. You were great companionship this morning on the TM!

46:00 on the TM this morning, and thrilled to report that I actually ran for 10:00 straight! (Kristi - I'll bet I'm running even slower than you are!)

I've been keeping it at 4R/1W, but really mixed it up today with a 5:00 run, then the 10:00 run, then a 6:00 run. (The display quit at 14:00, so I have no idea what kind of distance I might actually have run. I think it usually says I run a 14:00 mile, way longer than the 11:30 I did on my last outside run!)

The cold weather seems to have left us, at least for the next couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to some outdoor runs this weekend.

Jackie

Lily -- really adorable skirt and you look great in it! I am sorry you couldn't get on the equipment you wanted and REALLY sorry to hear your leg is bothering you.

Angie -- congratulations on the job! :yay:

cross-post from eating while training thread:

Hi, everyone! Wanted to check back in to let you know I went to the gym to try out the new shoes. Still not completely sold on them, especially since most of my first 2 miles I had shin splints. Most of the first mile I had pain in the fronts of my thighs. I think these force my feet in a bit and change the alignment of my hips, which may be phsysiologically correct, but not sure my body likes it. Jury is still out. We'll see.

I had to take it really easy because my shins HURT -- Dave, you really have my sympathy now! I ended up doing 4 miles in 54:00. Not much ahead of the Minnie pace, unfortunately -- I think 13:30 compared to required minimum 15:00. I know I can do better than that. I just don't know if I can do better than that in these shoes.

Some observations about the ASICS gel evolution II: no blisters or rubbing, etc.,so that is good. No bumping of the toes, so that is really good. Not as cushiony as my new balance 1122s, so that's a bummer. These are much lighter than the NB, though, and that is a plus, too.

I have been feeling so lousy the last couple of days and I was sweating disgustingly profusely (walking advertisement for why NOT to wear a long-sleeved cotton shirt to the gym, especially when they have a door open because the ventilation system is "off"), so the lousy performance may have been somewhat health-related. I can't even remember the last time I experienced shin splints, though.

Have a great night, all!

Oh, and Angie, my plan on the 5k days is to get on a TM and make up the difference either the same day or the next evening.

Hey all--I just remembered something I overheard at the gym today--I wanted to go over and tell the guy he was nuts, but I didn't have the guts--and then I wanted to make sure he was the crazy one. So here's what he said--he was giving his daughter some advice about running and told her that she should always lead with her toes (run toe to heel) b/c that's the only way she could prevent shin splints--Okay so am I nuts or is this guy off his rocker?? I've never heard of anything like that. And then I tried to run toe to heel and can't even figure how that's possible. I know some people run on their toes--but that's not the norm is it??? Okay, glad to have that off my chest.

Quick training update:

Made it to the gym! That was a victory in itself. Cam, I had DH rub my calves before we went, which I think did help.

So there I am, on the treadmill. Did my nice, slow 5-minute warm up, and then just walked at my normal pace for about 5 more minutes. And then I thought that maybe I'd just see how many R1/W2 intervals I could do. Not sure why, I guess I was feeling like a glutton for punishment.

I did a full 7 intervals!! :woohoo:

This was the first time I actually counted, but on all of my previous TM sessions, I've only been able to do a couple of running intervals, so it's been a lot of R1/W22 type workouts. Anyway, I did 2.5 miles in 39 minutes.

Good morning to everyone.

Jim - It seems to me that some time off would do some good after such a busy few months. Recharge the batteries a bit. I'm sure you'll know when you're ready to get back at it when you start getting stir crazy.

Angie - Congrats on the job!! You must be living right. So much to be excited about for you and your family. I'll second what someone else said; working is definitely easier than being home most of the time. Last week I finished off a string of working 100hrs in 10 days only to get 4 days off. Well, the DD's were off school all week due to snow then DD6 gets some stomach bug and does her best Linda Blair Exorcist impression for 3 days:eek: . I'm glad to be back at work!!

Mel - Great job on your recert.

I know this topic has been beat to death here but (or "butt" as the case may be) I don't get the whole Under Armour thong thing. Isn't compression clothing kind of their claim to fame? Tough to compress with a string. Maybe that's why Christa keeps getting honked at!

Lily - Take it easy on the IT band.

Kristi - Great job on the run.

Stephanie - Elevating your heels with cups or pads is one way to help shin splints but I'm thinking that running on your toes would probably cause more problems than it solves. Great job on your race BTW. I'm a fellow pharmacist working in a hospital. Every bed is full. They're stacking the sickies up like cord wood in the ER waiting for an opening.

TxAng - Great run. Keep up the good work.

Dave - Enjoy DD week. Be careful on the roof. It'd be a shame to cheat death on the roads only to be "The Agony of Defeat" guy from Wide World of Sports off the end of your house.

I've been relegated to full-time TM training due to lingering ice for the last week. Let me just say that 12 miles is a long way staying in one place. It's supposed to be warm all week but I don't hold out any hope of seeing a clear sidewalk or side of the road for at least another week. I'm seriously jealous of all you racers out there right now.

Sorry to all those I missed.

Take care everyone.

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Had a good day with the princesses, DD6 princess: and DD9 princess:, yesterday. I took them to the pool where I got in a 40 min SWOG. The princesses swam, played, jumped off the diving board, and had a great time while I worked out. We then went to IHoP for lunch for "Free Pancake Day". Everyone got a free "short stack" of 3 pancakes. Wow, they were filling. Then in the evening I took DD9 to tae kwon do. We just started taking lessons for some Daddy/DD9 princess: time. I was sweating by the end of that too. I think I burned off those pancakes.

Snow is melting here. So my "Daddy Camp" activity for today (kids are off school all week) of sled riding is out the window. Oh, DW just came down and said she didn't want to go to work today. So the princesses princess: princess: will have "Mommy Camp" today.

OK, I'm going to catch up with everyone now.
