Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

My 20 turned into 12.4 today. I think my spotty training bit me :scared1: I missed most of the SR the last 2 weeks and have been really cutting back on the cutback week for the past month. I have a couple extra weeks built in so I'm going to plan to get my SR in and do 16 next week, then pop up to 20 the following week then start TAPER MADNESS! :woohoo:

Colleen...sorry to see your knee's giving you problems.

AB...:wizard: for your cold getting better.

Diane...congrats on your 10 in freezing cold! Come on down, you can train here in the weather we had for this year's marathon weekend.

Lisa...yikes! Skiing must be great XT!

SilverSteve...dude...you are hardcore! I think you have passed the test of your mettle.

Vic...great photos! I'll pass on being a 50 yo dude, but I wouldn't mind hearing the stories.

Dave...have fun in Gatlinburg!

Shan...just start slow without the incline and turn it up slowly. You'll be fine!

Craig...good luck with that TM run!

Stephanie...good luck on your LR!

Carrie...great to see you! Hope the new job is going well!

Cam...great to see you too! Sorry the 5K wasn't what you were hoping. Good luck on your run!

Martha...what kind of new job do you have? :wizard: for the calf! Here's some help for the pestilence, plague and bad weather :umbrella:

Steve- WOW! Fascinating take on the "ice bath" concept! I'll remember that!

Hi everybody! :wave2:

Hope training is going well for you. I'm a little behind.:sad2:

I've been MIA for a few weeks. Bewtween getting Mom home from the hospital and taking care of her, work and Christmas shopping, my training has taken a hit. I've only been able to check the boards sporadically.
I have a little more free time the next couple of weeks, so i hope to get back in the groove. I better or my Goofy will be more grumpy.

Good luck to everyone. I'll try to check in more frequently.

Terri

OK, I tired to keep up on the posts. No such luck. You guys are posting machines! I did read Bill wouldn't be attending the marathon. Bill - You will be missed but you are probably making the right decision. I know it had to be a tough decision.

Also saw where some of you had snow. I am so sorry! I can't imagine running in the weather you guys have to put up with. When I was in Syracuse back in Oct it was rainy and cold and just miserable to run in. But, down here it is getting real old having to get up at 4:30 - 5:00 am on Saturdays for the long run, but I need to get out before the heat comes. Even at 6:00 am the humidity is terrible. I start sweating in the first 1/2 mile. Still in the mid 80's and we don't see any end in sight. Although during the day, if you are not running, it is beautiful.

So yesterday I put in 20 miles. This is the farthest I have ever run. I have a lot more respect when someone posts "I did a 20 mile LR" That short sentence means a whole lot. Everything from my waist down hurt by the time I finished :) The real good news is I wore my newer shoes. I have been having troubles breaking them in and thought I'd have to wear my old ones for the marathon. Nothing like a fresh pair of shoes! Kept the old pair in the car just in case.

I'll try to catch up on the posts this week!

enjoy,
Duane

Back from my "almost" 18 mile LR. I finished 17.46 miles, was at my driveway and called it a day. Did the 17 miles at 9:28 ave and then walked the last little bit. The last 2 miles or so were pretty brutal--everything aches from the hips down right now, especially my feet. Time for a cold soak and a relaxing day--oh I forgot we have not 1 but TWO Christmas parties this afternoon, so I better get my relaxing in now.

Good morning WISHers! Hoping everyone is having a wonderful Sunday.

18 scheduled, 10.75 completed. When I left the house it was 65 degrees, 99% humidity and fog. When I returned home it was 71 degrees with 100% humidity. Between the weather and my bad mood, it was not a good running day.

Mel - Sorry you had to cut your LR short, and I hear ya about the SRs.

Terri - Glad to see you back.

Duane - WTG with the 20 miler!

Stephanie - WTG with the 17.46 miler!

:)

A short post just to change the tide of training reports a little. I went out yesterday for a 12 mile run and finished with 13. Now everyone can have good luck as well. :lmao: I felt decent by the end of it and I could have probably gone further but I had too many things to do. I think I have a 20-22 this weekend and that will be the last long long run before the marathon. I will work this week to figure out the last mileages and hopefully something will come from it.

Vic - Hope your mood improves. From what I recall, you don't appear to be in the 50+ crowd so I may need to see some ID (if you are carrying any during your runs ;) ). Those are great pictures.

Mel - Hope you are able to get the shorter runs in this week. I notice a difference when I miss them. Just don't injure yourself this close to the race.

Duane - Great job on the 20 miles. Glad you didn't feel too bad afterwards.

Terri - Glad to see you back. Hope your training gets better for you. I believe there are already other people who have claimed the Grumpy status first.

Steve - I would love to try that ice bath but I have the little problem of being too far south. If I went out can sat in the dirt, the neighbors would think strange things about me.

Stephanie - Great job on the run yesterday. Two parties afterwards would have done me in.

Bill

Hello Team:

Just hanging out here at home waiting for the next "Wintery Mix." I think its great how those of us up North can take something like snow, sleet and freezing rain, and make it sound like a Christmas-time snack. Of course we often refer to blizzard conditions here as a quaint "Nor'easter."

Vic--Great pics and sorry about the LR. Great job getting out there and getting in some miles notwithstanding the other stuff.

Mel--Ditto to you -- minus the pictures part -- not that I think you don't have great pictures -- I mean -- never mind.

Duane--Thanks for the thoughts. I plan to keep trying though. Just need to decide whether WDW 2009 should be a marathon attempt and shoot for the 5th Anniversary Goofy in 2010 or just be a dope ... I mean Dopey, and sign up for Goofy in 2009.

Calcio/Craig--Dude, I am no where near the >50 club. Due to my physical ailments, it just sounds like I am old enough to be collecting Social Security. None of my four kids have hit college yet :scared1:, and 2 are still in braces and another is definately going to need them (I see my mid-life crisis Harley :moped: every time they smile). That is why I am trying this health/distance event thing to fill my mid-life crisis void. Its been lots of fun so far, but at least after January I jump to the 45-49 AG and even if I loose a couple hundred pounds, I will still qualify as a Clydedale in races recognizing that group (I guess that currently puts me in the Clydesdale-team group ;) ). Anyway, I am sorry I'll miss any get together this year. Hopefully in future years they will still happen and I'll be there. So you know in advance, I don't have any worldly-type stories (having primarily "grown up" in the 70's and 80's), but I love to listen, majored in history and philosophy and am pretty good at making things up.

Steve and Krista-- GO PATS

Hey, everyone, hope you guys are enjoying your Sunday. It's POURING rain here in Cincy and poor Stephen is out running his 18 miler in this mess. Thankfully I ran my 7 miles yesterday, it was sprinkling and cold, but not pouring. All in all it was a good run, despite the weather, I'm very glad that Stephen bugged me enough that I went out and ran just to shut him up! ;) Oh, that reminds me, I had the CRAZIEST dream Friday night, I dreamt that I overslept on half marathon morning and completely missed the race. I kept saying "I can't believe I worked so hard to finally get an entry and I slept through the race!". So the marathon dreams have started.

Mel--Sorry your 20 miler wasn't to be, but you were smart to stop when you did. It's no use to train for months and months and then get hurt weeks before the marathon just because you pushed yourself too hard. :wizard: for your ankles!

Silver Steve--Whoa! That's what I call an ice bath!!! Great job on your 20 miler, I'm very impressed you ran it on the TM!

Colleen--:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: for your knee!!!!!

Vic--Very cool pics!

Teri--I hope life gets easier for you in the new year! At least you have running to work your frustrations out. :wizard: for your mom!

Martha--Congrats on the new job!

Cam--Sorry the 5K wasn't the best! But kuods to you for getting out there when you didn't feel like it. I definitely know what you mean about the heel induced feet cramps. What we do for fashion! Good luck on your 16 miler!

Christa and Bree--I thought about you girls yesterday! How did the marathon go?

I better get off here, I have quite the pile of laundry to fold and put away. I'm embarrased with the size of the pile! I'm sure Stephen will be on here later to report on his soggy run.

NE Patriot Fans--HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!! :woohoo:  :woohoo:

I do have one good run to report. DH did his first 10 miles ever this morning in 1:53 for an 11:18 pace :woohoo: Duane and Vic are right...weather is glorious for December, but too hot for marathon running. We're starting out in the 60's with humidity and it's 82 degrees now...hope we get some cooler weather for Jan.

Bill Floyd...this is a question I shouldn't be asking but I was wondering how much time you took off last year after Goofy before you started training for the Sarasota half. :rolleyes1 Are you guys still planning to do Five Points in Gainesville next year?

PatsBill...DD14 wants to major in history. Are there particular colleges she should be focusing on?

Vic...sorry bout your run. Sounds like we have some of the same stuff going on. How are the feet?

SilverSteve...do I remember correctly that you are a PT? I need to work on ankle strengthening for my new pet problem (tarsal coalition at the talocalcaneal joint). Any suggestions?

Speaking of pet problems, I have a HUGE dilemma for marathon weekend. I ALWAYS wear navy blue polish with stars on my toes for races. I AM OUT OF STARS :scared1: I went to Walmart today...no more stars!!!!! I still have plenty of blue so I got a glitter topcoat, but I don't know if I can run without my stars.:scared1: I don't want to say I'm one of those superstitious athletes, but this could be tragic

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I ran my 18 miler yesterday. Nice and easy with a perfect 11 minute pace. It felt good! A couple hours later, I went for a 3 or 4 mile walk with a friend of mine who is trying to lose some weight. My legs were stiff and sore before the walk but felt great afterwards. I though I would be tired but I was just very mellow. I know, hard to imagine isn't it!

I am so impressed that you paint your toenails prior to a race. I only had a few toenails left last year. I thought Goofy would do them in but so far so good. You have weeks before the marathon to find stars? Want everyone to check their local Walmarts? Where in the store would I even look for such a thing?

Duane - Congrats on your first 20 miler!

Cecilia

Glad everyone likes the pics.

Took a shower and had a little lunch. My mood is much better. Of course I’m glad I don’t want to sit on either of the recliners.

earnhardt120907a.jpg

Colleen – Hope the knee feels better.

Steve – 20 miles on the TM. You da man! We want pics of you sitting in the snow.

Krista – WTG on the 7 miler! This is one of the few times I’ll root for the Steelers. They better not let me down. How's Hines doing?

PatsBill – Hope you’re doing well. I’m sorry, but I have to root for the Steelers today.

FLBill – I ALWAYS carry my ID. :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Mel – During the week there always seems to be something getting in the way of the SRs. I need to hit them hard for the next couple of weeks too. The feet feel pretty good. Hope yours are doing well. Gosh, I hope you can find some stars for your toes. I guess you could go to Office Depot and buy the stick on kind? :confused3

Cecilia – WTG with the 18 miler!

Mel - Sorry your LR was cut short, but 12.4 is still a great run!!! I'll let Bill answer on how much time he took off, but we are planning on Gainesville. Bill will do the half and I'll do the 5K. (He doesn't trust me running through the Swamp... ) :lmao:

Terri - Glad to see you back! I hope things settle down for you soon!

Duane - Awesome job on the 20-miler!!!

Stephanie - Yea for the LR! Two parties in one afternoon is too many for me on a regular day... I can't imagine after a LR!!! ;) Have fun!

Vic - Sorry about the weather (I certainly feel your pain...), but good job getting 10+ in those conditions!

DH - puckerup:

NE Bill - We'll miss you in January! Good luck with the wintery mix... :scared1: As much as I complain about the heat, I'll keep our weather over yours!!!

Krista - Great job on the 7 miles and :wizard: for Stephen out in the rain!!!!

Cecilia - Great job on 18 miles plus a walk!!!

Well, here is my report. I had a revelation last Sunday. I simply cannot walk fast enough to stay ahead of the sweepers. So, I decided to throw in a 30 second jog every 5 minutes. I figured - hey, it can't hurt... I used to run... the PF is mostly healed... (Keep in mind I still have all the preggo weight, plus the previous weight, which puts me past the Pooh-sized category and into the Mrs.Jumbo-sized category.) So Friday morning I attempted 9 miles. The good news is that I finished just ahead of the sweeper time. The bad news is that the back of my knee is hurting, and went from a lovely shade of red on Friday night to a pretty purple yesterday. :scared: If it is still painful tomorrow, I will call the doctor, but if anyone has any advice in the meantime, I would love to hear it! I just have to finish the half because I CANNOT let DH beat me in the medal count!!!!!!!!! ;) Anyway, I'm hoping for some quick healing. If not, there will be more races in the future.

Tonight we have the first of several Christmas programs. Billy's choir is singing at church, so I need to help him get ready. :goodvibes Hope everyone has a great week!

--Lynnda

35 days to marathon Sunday and people are kicking butt and taking names.

I'm particularly impressed and puzzled by Stephanie's 17.46 at 9:28 per mile. If I recall correctly you did the Tower of Terror about 9 minutes per mile, so you go up 9.5 miles and come off only 28 seconds per mile. Wow is all I can say. I could never replicate that performance.

Regarding Stephen, running 18 miles outside in pouring rain makes me question either his sanity, his intelligence, or his education. Where did you get that engineering degree there young man, on the Baltimore & Ohio?

Duane, Cecilia, Mel, Bill, Vic, Lynnda and Krista as well, great work. Lynnda, be sure to get ice on that knee and take the anti-inflammatories.

And way to go Martha with 1 strong hour today. You've got all the good sense in the family, taking care of the muscle strain and coming back strong and ready.

I know it's 5 weeks away, but your weather reports aren't very encouraging. December 9 and still hot and humid is troubling. Last year's marathon conditions were dangerous, not just bad. Please let that not be the case again. If I step outside at 5:15 on the morning on the 13th and it's 70 degrees and 100 % humidity I'll scream or cry or likely both.

Okay, okay, if Stephen's judgment is questionable doing 18 in the pouring rain, mine cannot be much better, doing 18 today on the treadmill. I set the incline at 0.5 and the speed at a sustainable pace and took off. At the half way point I felt great, and miles 13 through 15 were really strong. At 16 things began to fatigue, but I held the pace and could have increased it if I had any need to do it.

The best part is only 1 more really long effort in 2 weeks, and then I come off to race day. My running log and my body tell me I'm a lot more fit than 1 year ago, but I won't know for sure until I come out of the back of the magic kingdom.

Best
Craig

Hey Team - So yesterday when I woke I up DID NOT want to run one foot. The weather was below zero and I was just not up to it. DH nagged me and I drug my body out of bed. Because of the cold I had to run indoors, so I headed to the Y. I did the first 5 on the TM and figured there was no way I could pound out 18 on that thing. So after 5 I headed up to the indoor track. I did 5 more... ok I can do this. Then I did 4 more.... still hanging on... 4 more left and I did them. It really helped to break the run into smaller segments. I had so many people staring at me and 2 asked how many laps I planned to do. 4 hours worth, that's how many! I finished in about 4:15 which included bathroom, gel and water breaks.

What I noticed on this run. First, I was starving at mile 16 even tho I had taken 3 gels on the run. Also, by mile 12 my toes hurt really bad. Come to find out I was getting a blister on my second toe. It's OK, but I need to make sure I think of that in January. And I also need to come up with some nutrition so I don't pass out on the course.

I have to run now, DH is putting up decorations and the house is a mess. It is still blasted cold here, our highs are in the teens. :scared1:

Hi all.... *sigh*

Finished a chilly 16 miles today. Unfortunately I had stomach ailments from Friday night thru...well let's just say last night. I tried to hydrate but I think the dehydration got the best of me. I bonked around mile 10 and dropped my pace considerably. Overall though it was a decent run. The gel at mile 13 gave me a burst of energy to carry me thru the 16...and the freezing rain miraculously held off *yay*. :) So 10:48 pace....my body is SCREAMING at me right now....the worst I've felt since last years' marathon :(. I'm ready for an ice bath...hope that aleve kicks in SOON!!!!!! *praying to the pain reliever gods* :worship:

I'll catch up with everyone now....I'm procrastinating freezing my butt of in the ice bath ;). he he he

Cecilia...Nice 18 miler. Ahhhh....a walk would probably feel great tonight but I think the icy conditions will keep me in :(. I always feel better after a LR when I move around a lot later that day.

Krista...Great job on the 7 yesterday :). Wow....race stress dreams 4 weeks prior?! Wait until taper madness...you poor thing ;). Poor Stephen though...yuck...I thought I'd be getting pelted with sleet today but Mother Nature was kind again!

Jen...MAJOR props on the 18!!!! WTG!!!!

Craig....Wow...another crazy LONG RUN ON THE TREADIE! I just can't do it. You guys and girls amaze me with the distance on the dreadmill. I'm super impressed. And yes....ONE MORE LR! Woo-Hoo :cool1:

Vic....Awwwwww cute doggies :). Needed those pics to make me smile. Feeling less than smiley right now. Thanks!!!!

Mel...Sorry to hear about your ankle problem  . You're one tough chick!!!

Bill....ummm...I'm so sorry but....I have to say it.....LET'S GO STEELERS!!!

Bill Floyd...this is a question I shouldn't be asking but I was wondering how much time you took off last year after Goofy before you started training for the Sarasota half. :rolleyes1 Are you guys still planning to do Five Points in Gainesville next year?

Mel - I took a full week off doing nothing but normal walking around. Then I started back slowly with my short and long runs. Although due to sickness and travel, I didn't get all the training in that I wanted. Yep, I think we are still planning on doing the Five Points in Feb. We have the hotel reservations but still need to sign up.

Bill

Finished a 10-miler today, once again on the treadmill.

I ended up being on the elliptical all this week while the blisters on my foot (almost) healed, so I wanted to do my W/R in a controlled situation. Plus, it was raining again. :rolleyes1 New socks, blister guard, and extra padding on the problem area. It was better than last week, but I think I'm still looking for a better solution. I think it will be another visit to our running store & maybe trying a different pair of shoes (again).

On the upside, I'm headed toward my next-to-last LR. I mentioned last week that I'm doing MFM's plan but am a week behind schedule, but forgot to say I've modified it 1) so DH and I can do some training together and 2) because of our hectic travel/holiday plans. We added another LR, but now we'll only get a 2 week taper (DH is happier with that, anyway, as it's his regular time frame.) Now if I could just stop worrying about how the holidays are going to affect our training....

Btw, I've been trying to follow all the posts--you're all so active here!--and I appreciate all the information you've provided. I'm now a convert to ice baths (all right, I'm not converted to them but I've learned to accept them. I'm trying to figure out my nutrition, too, and have discovered I'm not a fan of the gels or the blocks but can handle the beans. And I have channeled my not-so-obvious fashionista self into the search for the perfect socks.

Not much else to say, except I continue to try and keep up with your posts and I hope to be more active over the next year....

Oh, and Go Steelers. (Sorry Bill--Pittsburgh is my new hometown, and I must be loyal.)

dkp - With regards to the blisters: I've gotten blisters the past two years at WDW, in different spots. After the marathon in 2006 I had a wicked blood blister the size of 1/2 dollar. UGLY! So, for the 2007, I put vaseline on that spot, then put my socks on and vaseline over the spot again and rubbed vaseline on the inside of my shoe, where that spot would be. NO blister at all - on that spot. I got about 5 other blisters in the heat and it knocked me out at mile 21.

Someone recommended the Injinji toe socks to help avoid blisters on the toes. I tried them on an 11 mile run and had no problems. I'm going to wear them for the upcoming Goofy, but still use the vaseline, too, as extra precaution.

Good luck. I know the blisters were a pain!

Terri
