Wk of Dec 2--WISH Walking/Running Club

Cam- WTG on your 20 miler!!!!! :cool1: I'm so proud of you for carving out time to get it in :thumbsup2 And then another 5k after that  The aliens have carted you off to hang with all the big time athletes now. :teeth:

Matt-I think you are too hard on yourself, you did great!!! :cheer2:

Christa-eeww, that cant feel good :wizard: for the toe

Vic- I hope DW gets better :wizard:

I did my 12 miler today. Went pretty good (especially considering the lack of training lately) My legs & feet were feeling it pretty good (and still are) But I'm happy its done!!! Only 1 more really LR & then its downhill from there.

Terri- Glad you had a great run :cool1: those always feel great!

Hi Everyone,

Well, I got some training in today -- I did some walking instead of the running (trying to take a little easy). I was able to do 5 miles at a 15:00/14.38 pace, it was a lot of work but not too too bad.

Is that a good pace for walking? I wanted to try and get it down lower but it is really tough because I'm was learning how to work a different set of muscles that walkers use. Any advice from all of you walkers?

My husband bought up something worth, I think, looking into for the marathon. I still very much want to run it (if I don't feel comfortable then I will walk it). Anyhow, back to the orginal thought.....he brought up that maybe if I don't feel better by my next check up with my doctor -- maybe ask if he recommends a cortizone shot -- Do you think that is a good idea? I know they tend to be painful but is it something worth looking into?

I might try and do some more walking tomorrow night -- I enjoyed it! but I think I need to stretch out my shins and calf muscles a little more.

SportsAuthority has the Asics GT2110 Cushion Running Shoe (men's, women's) for $54 - 25% off NOVFF25 - $10 Google checkout = $30.49 w/ free shipping. :cool1:

I haven't even gotten to 100 miles yet on my Kayanos, but I was wanting to try these out as well, and for that price even to use as like a backup trail pair or rainy weather pair its too good to pass up...

Wow, 22 posts on the thread for this week already and it's only Sunday afternoon! We all have nothing better to do than hang out with our WISH team, right? :thumbsup2

Stephanie--great job on the 5k! Kudos on the PR!

Dave--sorry about the stonker run. But as Christa said, is 20 miles supposed to feel good? :confused3 Try not to fall off the roof putting up Christmas lights. I told Krista that there will be no lights on the upper parts of the house this year since I'm afraid of falling off the ladder, and it's waaaay to close to January 6th to be falling off ladders.

Cam--wow, WTG on the 23.1 miles! Please tell me you've been bragging to everyone you know that you did all that in one day. :)

WARNING: I have been thinking about the other things that were normal at this point in training last year. They include: Obsessive worry over every body ache! Paranoia around even the smallest sniffle or cough, extreme swings in affect, uncontrollable appetite!! just some more thing to look forward to over the next 4 weeks.!
MelR--yeah, that list brings back memories. I do indeed remember running full speed away from anyone who so much as sniffled or sneezed for the entire month of December last year.

Amy--so sorry about your inury. Good for you trying to keep a positive attitude. We'll be praying for you for your Sports Med meeting on Monday.

Sunny--way to go on your 19! Your story makes me want to find a Starbucks on my LR route. Although I'm a little apprehensive about stnading in line to order coffee at Starbucks after 10 or 15 sweaty miles. :teeth:

Lily--nice job on the 9 miles. Good luck on your 18 today. Try not to get sick.

Mel--don't worry about the 10. You have enough experience to know that one run doesn't matter. You'll be fine in 5 weeks, but I'm sure you already know that. :) I don't have much to add about speeding up the pacing that everyone else hasn't said already, but I know that when I push my pace for several weeks consecutively, I have a tendency to get injured if I'm not careful. I've always heard to either push the distance or push the pace--not both. So maybe you want to wait till after Disney to work on speed.

Kim--good job with the 15K on the bike. I know what you mean about setting PRs on the bike. I almost get more excited with a bike PR than a running PR (almost...)

Cecillia--couldn't agree with you more about the middle miles of a LR being the hardest. Mentally, I'm ok when I get to the 75% point of a LR, but the 25-75% stretch is a tough one.

Vic--I think I speak for everyone here when I say Im jealous of you being in WDW! Hope your DW feels better and you get to go to MVMCP. How's the weather down there now?

Chester--I second your opinion on HR training. Krista got me a Forerunner 305 this summer and I have been using the HR monitor for all of my runs since then. It makes it so much easier to tell when you're pushing yourself too hard or not hard enough. A lot of times, I'll base my LR pace on my HR instead of the actual pace per mile calculation. It's amazing how much your actual pace can vary for any given HR zone, especially because of weather, how your body feels that day, etc.

Christa--sorry to hear about the wind and rain for your run. Although I guess that's a good warm-up for the possibliity that we could have bad weather at Disney. BTW, has anyone thought about that? I know we don't want to talk about it, but has anyone mentally prepared for the "worst" weather/conditions at Disney?

Susie--I'm no expert, but I've always spent 15 min or so in the ice bath and it seems to work.

Well, based on the other LRs this weekend, I guess I should have had a stonker today (maybe mine is coming next week when everyone else has an awesome run  ), but I actually had a really good 20 miler today. The legs felt great throughout the run, and I had been worried about that after the 10 yesterday. Finished in 3:18 overall, and I felt good about the pace. I still have to take the good ole ice bath. I've been trying to put it off as long as possible. :)

Hope everyone has a good week and some great runs, both physically and mentally. And by the way, is anyone else getting really excited to meet everyone at the Friday night dinner? I was telling Krista yesterday that last year we weren't nearly as excited as we are this year. It will be great to see you all!

Wow, awesome deal, Matt! You're right, you can't go wrong for $30. That reminds me, I need to try to get over to Dick's tonight. I have a "friends and family" discount coupon (a friend of mine works there) for 25% off anything in the store, plus a 10% employee discount. I know they carry the Kayanos, and I wouldn't mind getting a back up pair for less than $100.

I'll try to catch up on everyone's post later, but wanted to give my training results for the day and get your opinions. Just got out of a 20 min. ice soak (br-r-r-r) and have to run to the mall to pick up something I ordered.

I did 11 miles w/r today (had planned on 12, but the route I took ended up being only 11). Finished in 2:31:34 (which I think is about a 13:34mpm pace)
Although I was getting tired near the end, I didn't feel totally wiped out. For that I'm happy.
What I'm not happy about is that I got a blister again! I don't know what to do.
By the end of last year's Goofy I had a blood blister the size of half dollar on my foot. So musch for blister free socks
Yesterday I did 5 miles on the track and had no blister problems. Today I was on the sidewalks and blacktop and I have a combo (clear blister in the middle with two little blood blisters on either side. I wore my thicker smart wool socks and put vaseline on the area where I seem to get the blisters to try to reduce the friction.

Does anybody have any other ideas? My shoes are the Asics Kayanos (this is the 3rd time I've worn them). I don't want to suffer through the Goofy with more blisters. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Terri

My family graciously allowed me to spend last night away from home so I could do a mini-Goofy -- a 7-mile trail run Saturday followed by a half marathon on Sunday (the Victory Junction Half Marathon). Now I am in severe family debt and need to do laundry, etc., etc. Photos and a race report are here:

Wendys Victory Junction Run Report

I know I'm being a terrible team member by not commenting on everyone's posts, but between Dad being in the hospital and all the training walks and the kids... please forgive me for just trying to keep my head above water right now. I hope to be able to meet many of you in January!

Wow, it looks like everyone is training hard.

Wendy --- SO COOL!! :thumbsup2

I wish I had more time to check in. WHile I will pop in to read for inspiration, I often do not post, one due to time or two, I just can't respond to all the great things I am reading!!

Anyway, DH and I ran 8 miles yesterday. Time: 1:51. We are slow but steady. I had to subtract 6 minutes off my watch! We found a yorkie wandering the streets and found his owners searching for him! He wandered off while they were hanging lites! We'll take all the good karma we can get so it was worth it!

I am a bit sore today, but proud of myself. I was sick last week and did not run or get to the gym at all!

Are any first timers nervous about training only calling to run 10 miles on your longest run? I am. DH says trust the penguin, so far it has been good!

Have a great week all!!!
Nancy

We caught the edge of a storm and it was less than 30° and due to the patches of ice, I didn’t want to risk running outside and falling so I hit the TM
1 15:00
2 15:00 gatorade
3 14:08 half breakfast bar
4 15:03 water
5 14:37 half banana
6 14:00 gatorade
7 15:00 sports beans
8 14:19 gatorade
9 15:00 small muffin
10 14:17 water
11 14:35 sports beans
12 14:59 gatorade
.7 TM died
The good: pace was good to go the distance. The bad: New socks seems to have helped blisters, but the problem isn’t completely gone. The ugly: short 5 miles. But it’s a new week and another chance to keep moving forward.

Quick drive-by...

I was supposed to do my 8 mile lr on Friday. But Friday was my day o' Goos, so I did it yesterday. I managed to get 6.5 in and then quit early. I misjudged how early it gets dark & I had to stop. I felt fine though & certainly could have kept going.

Today was supposed to be 50 mins. w/r. I stopped at 32 mins. - I simply had no energy. I guess that's why you should have a rest day after your long run, huh? I'll remember that next time I juggle things around!

I'll catch up everyone tomorrow!
(I have time for that at work, not home :rotfl: )

Terri

One solution that works for lots of folks, including me is:

Vaseline on hot spot
Bandaid over hot spot
White athletic tape over bandaid, use enough to make sure it doesn't come off
Thin sock on skin
Double layer sock over thin sock
Vaseline on the hot spot on the sock
Vaseline on the shoe where the hot spot rubs

Another alternative is this stuff called "second skin." They apply it in the medical tents at Disney and it is heaven. It's a cool plastic with little fluid pockets in it. Put the 2nd skin on the spot and then layer up. You can find it at most pharmacies.

Good luck. Those blisters are real killers.

Hm, guess I'll have to wait for that great deal... At least I'm not in a hurry.

It was warm today, low 80s. A cold front is supposed to move through tonight and drop the daytime temperatures by 20 degrees.

The DW is feeling better, so it looks like a go for tomorrow. :)

good evening everyone -- thought i'd jump back in after a couple crazy hectic weeks and found 3 pages already! :wave2:

i'll commiserate with everyone on a stinker LW(LR if you may) yesterday -- i'll repost from my BL report:

yesterday got my 8 miler done! i had a really hard time getting going -- downloading my tunes did not go well and i've never had trouble. it took my an hour to get the ipod straightened out and then it still acted up a bit. i'm reseting it and re-downloading before next walk outdoors. anyhow -- then i headed out (an hour later than i'd hoped thinking all along I should be 1/2 way done not just starting!) and took the path to my walking path and the wind was soooo strong, it was very brrrrr!; came to the hill and looked down and lo and behold the path was FLOODED! i was like, "C'mon!" so i turned and headed back to walk in the development -- no route planned just walked and walked for 2 hours and figured it was close to 8 miles. +/- no more than 1/2 mile. also -- since my route was detoured i had a dollar in my pocket and no where to stop and get my water bottle, so cleverly planned at 5.5 miles with a GU in my pocket. so i called DH and he brought me one just over and hour. what a guy  i was ever so glad to walk in my door and be done with it, then realized it didn't even seem like i was walking 2 hours. for me the first 2 are more a warm-up, getting my pace on, etc. after 4-5 i just go on auto-pilot. when i'm outside, this is why i dread TM time b/c i focus way to much on how much more i have to go. and not a bit sore, which is great seeing that i got new orthotics one week ago :goodvibes

just checked weather and it'll feel like a big ole' 1 degree tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. at my walk-time so i'll substitute my WATP (walk away the pound) for my normal 60 min walk. that's just toooooo cold!

getnthinr -- kudos on your event this weekend!!

i must say i'm not loving my shoes, but i feel its too late now to change them. i'm ready to splurge on a new fab pair of socks. my best socks now are the ones I bought to train for my first 1/2 in 2005, so they are like 2 yrs old! :smokin: but you know at most i wear them once a week - i always 'save' them for my long day. anyone else sock retentive?

Wendy - WTG!!

I have had blister trouble and one bout of black toe. It is not fun. I did find 2nd skin works great.

I also get a pedicure once a month, but never within a week of a race.

Thanks Craig!

I'll look for the 2nd skin and I printed out your other tips. I'll be taking them with me to WDW. Geez, besides all my other packing, it looks like I'll be packing a bunch of 1st aid supplies, too. Luckily, I have a friend coming down as part of my scream team who is also a nurse. She'll help if any medical (blister) issues pop up.

Terri

Wow, congrats on everyone that did LR/LW this weekend! :cheer2:  Stonkers or not, you guys got out there and did it! :woohoo: I suppose I'll just be your cheeleader, since I'm not training with you! :cheer2:

Susie--the 5K was Craig O'Neal's Jingle Bell Run benefiting the Arthritis foundation. It started and finished in the River Market district in Little Rock. Really nice out and back course. Hey, since you mentioned something about Russellville--do you know if they still have the Valentines 5K on the Bona Dea trails??? I've done it once, and it would be taper time for me this year, so it might fit my schedule well!

Good Morning Everyone-

On my second manditory rest day. Taper is going to KILL me!

Oh Mom - I am sock retnetive too. I still "save" my first pair of thorlos for my long runs.

MickeySp - I have 4 black toes - what causes them and what can I do for them? I figured that was just the price of 30 - 40 miles a week.

MelR - its so good to know that all these strange obsessions are completely normal. :lmao: I have been putting myself to bed at 9 pm hoping to prevent a cold. That and I refuse to volunteer at the kids school until after the marathon. That place is a germ factory!

Vic - Glad she is feeling better! Have fun today.

Nancy - I like that "Trust the Penguin" do we have room for another motto?

Ok, another question. I notice that alot of you are taking gu and eating during your long runs. My coaches have told me not to use anything on the long runs. I get powerade and thats it. (Granted, I drank 64 ounces of the stuff on my 20 mile run.) Also, I only eat a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast before my runs. Reason being that I probably won't eat much more than that before the marathon.

They did have me try different things, like gu and sport beans but only to see if my body could handle them. We tried them on short runs.

So I am confused, why are people using gu and gels etc during training?

Cecilia - I take a gel (about 100 calories) every 40 mins to 4 miles. I also use an electrolyte drink. I burn calories very quickly. I would not be able to finish w/o eating. Right now i'm using powergel and acceleraid. I have a friend who eats much less than me and could probably get by on using the aid stations alone. I'm sure you'll find what works for your body.

Cecelia, please don't take this the wrong way, but I am starting to question some of the things your coaches are telling you. Are these TNT coaches?

This has been bothering be for some time and I am only giving you my opinion because of concern for you. You are training for a marathon and it should be a positive experience :Pinkbounc , you always seem to be in pain. :faint: This is NOT normal. I really think your coaches are asking you to run way too many miles for your first marathon. I know we have had this discussion before, but LR's of 20 or 22 miles is all that is needed. Pushing more long runs is only asking for injury. Experienced marathoners put in these kind of miles, but first timers, in my opinion should not. Haven't you already ran at least one 22 miler or was it even a 24 miler?? :confused3

As for not taking any Gu or Powergel, that is a personal preference, but a lot of literature states that your carbs need to be replenished. Some people don't take gels, because they can't handle them and still finish. Competitive marathoners don't, but they are only out there for just over 2 hours. We will be out there for 4-5 hours!! I am a big girl and burn a lot of calories therefore I definitely need them. Again, do what is right for you, but I think you should at least experiment with them. You will be amazed how you feel during the race and your recovery will be that much quicker as well.

Just give it some thought, I would like to see you running for years to come!

Colleen
