Wk Of Dec 15 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi everyone!

Lots of PD :wizard: to those in snow up to their knees, etc. We've had one snowfall of a couple of inches, but mainly nothing but flurries here in Northern Delaware since.

As Terri (Hi Terri!) said above, it mostly rained here today, but it was off and on. So, I went to the YMCA (after the Steeler's loss - Grrr) to hit the TM. I logged 6.25 miles. I felt a bit fatigued so I kept it shorter than my last run.

Here is my Goofy Training to date:

12/12: 6.35 miles
12/14: 8.35 miles
12/16: 6.25 miles

Not much, but for just starting out, not too shabby. I am averaging around a 10:30-10:45 min/mile on the TM.

More to come soon.

Happy Training!

:grouphug:

Sorry Life had TOTALLY taken Over so I haven't had much time for training and definately no time for reading posts. I do have to report that I ended uo doing 4.5 miles on the TM even though I had only planned on doing 3 at the most. I was watching a movie so that helped big time - especially going the extra 1.5 miles. I did take it slow and mainly walked since I wanted to test out my new shoes. I like them so far. Did end up having "hot spots" on the balls of my feet but that is something that always happened in non running shoes.

On another note, my DH and I are buying an LCD TV for Christmas as our gift instead of getting each other gifts. So we found the one we wanted at Best Buy. I found it for $300 cheaper at Bestbuy.com (of all places) So I took my time ordering it and then yesterday realized if I wanted to have it before Christmas I had to order it soon. The next available delivery date is next Saturday so that worked perfect for me. So I put everything in the shopping cart and check out. Well the total of the purchase was higher then my limit on my check card (who knew these things since I don't normally purchase things even half of this amount!!! :scared1: So I realize its because of my limit. So me and DH decide to drive to Best Buy to get gift cards for the difference between limit and total. We go to another store before going to Best Buy and for some reason my card is declined again - :scared1: - I am freaked out because I know there is enough money in the account. Well after a LONG LONG wait on the phone I find out that because of the early purchase attempt at Bestbuy.com they think the card is stolen and put it on hold!!!! So I get the hold released and everything is fine. Then I decide later last night to go to Best Buy to buy the gift card with a check. So I wait in a line from (well you know where!! LOL) and write out my check for the total and - BAM - declined - so I am batting 0 here. I call the bank - there is no limit on check writing and they didn't decline my check. Get home and decide I am done with Best Buy. I call up Best Buy customer service to see if I can find out why they declined my check. Well long story short an outside company does check approvals for them and since I don't normally write checks for this amount they declined it. :headache: Ok whatever. So I decide that its just not worth it and that the TV must not have been meant to be.

Today I was busy all day baking cookies and making soap (for Christmas gifts) I finally sit down at the computer (when I know I should be in bed!!) and I check for the heck of it Bestbuy.com and what do you know the TV is now $1000 cheaper :cheer2: - I have to double and triple check it and even though yesterday I would have had free delivery and today I had to pay $60 delivery fee I would gladly pay the delivery fee and save $1000. So I am convinced that the hassle yesterday was a sign (or :santa: ) Whatever it is I am so HAPPY :cool1:  :cheer2: because next Saturday I will be getting delivery of my new HDTV!!!!

Hello, WISHers!

Wow, definitely LTO for me. I have had such a hard time getting my runs in! Today I've got to get an 18 miler done, then I'll do a 22 next weekend and then officially taper (instead of the involuntary taper I've been in!). I don't care if I have to walk; I've got to get it done. I'm just waiting for the thermometer to hit 30 before I go out.

Last Monday I did 13 and did a couple short runs after that. This weekend we were away at a soccer tournament but I did manage to do 3 on the hotel tm without killing myself. The speed kept changing on it! It fluctuated anywhere from 6.7 - 7.3! I noticed when I'd step on the front of it and then I started watching the speed and saw it changing without me touching anything. :confused3 I was really afraid I was going to fall so cut it short.

I'm still looking for my missing motivation -- I think it's more that I'm scared of the 26.2 and psyching myself out. Running for me is at least as much mental as physical! :sad2:

:wizard: for all those nursing injuries and illness; kudos to all those getting the miles in!

Happy training, all!
Renee

Hey kids,

I posted a sort of whiny race report from my half in Jacksonville on Sunday. Maybe I should get a good night's sleep before making any final decisions on a race! I realized this morning that I am still fighting some sort of sinus infection/cold/congestion? that I've had for a week. I'm such an idiot- I didn't even think about how that may have hurt me in the race! (Not so much that my time would have been better, but my attitude would have probably improved!)

Laurie- I hurt my IT band during my 18 miler. Mine hurt at 16 miles but I forced myself to finish. That was stupid! I took some time off and it is better. I think if I had stopped the minute it hurt and just realized that 16 miles was still good, I wouldn't have had to take off the next weekend's LR... So by being obstinate I ended up gaining 2 miles that day, but losing 12 the next.:rolleyes1 It still flares up sometimes but not as much as that first time.

Tricia- new TV!!! Fun!!! My DH one time freaked out in a Best Buy and started yelling "does anyone in here want to take my money?!" because no one was helping us get a computer and we'd waited forever...

Renee- I have motivation problems too right now. I really just signed up for the half I did so that I would get in my 13 miles! I've missed a few midweek runs too for perfectly good LTO reasons, but it's starting to make me nervous. If the overwhelming self-doubt I feel everytime I miss a run is what I'll be feeling during the taper, I should be completely crazy!

OK, WTO-

Jen in GA

Look who has officially arrived at her taper!!!! This weekend was my longest ever - 10 miles on Friday, 20 miles on Saturday.

The 10 miler on Friday felt easy...it went by so quickly. I left from work, ran around one of the swanky neighborhoods around town and admired the Christmas lights on the houses. Saturday I had some people to run half of my 20 with (or so I thought), so I got up early and ran 9 miles around my neighborhood. It was quite hilly and it went not too badly. A blister was forming on my arch though, so even though I had planned for 10 I cut it short, did a little first aid at home and rushed downtown to meet my group. My group....wow...everyone was quite a bit faster, especially considering I had so many miles under my belt. I kept up, but when a couple of people decided to head back early and only run 6 miles I was feeling a bit relieved. The group lead had decided to run over a snow covered path and this was seriously sucking my energy. The folks with the group lead also decided to head back early so he and I ran together for a bit (and he majorly slowed his pace down for me). We ran together for a bit, then he met up with another runner and I was back to being on my own which I was happy about since I didn't have to worry about keeping up. Around 17 or 18 miles I seriously hit the BMZ where my legs were so tired... I took a few nice, long walk breaks. Had my little pity party, then told myself that I could finish this and I was so close to being done. I got my second with with about 1.25 miles left to go and just kept running until the end - otherwise if I stopped I might not have gotten going again. It felt so good to get those 20 miles done. I tried to stretch afterwards, but my legs wanted none of that so I waited awhile before trying again. I felt pretty stiff and tired, but overall my recovery has been fairly speedy from the 20 it seems. I have to remember at the Goofy that I NEED to take it easy at the half so I don't blow the full the next day...

Friday's 10 miler = 1:54:22 (11:24/mi)
Saturday's 9 miler = 1:49:24 (12:09/mi)
Saturday's 11 miler = 2:16:57 (12:27/mi)
Saturday's total 20 miler = 4:06:21

Leana—GREAT JOB on the runs this weekend! Wow, you got some serious mileage in. Reading about your last 2 miles on the 20 miler made me remember my last back-to-back for Goofy last year. I felt the SAME way, just completely dead tired and unable to stretch. The good news is that the actual races went much better for me than that last LR, so maybe that’s something good for you to hear. Anyway, great job!

Jen—hope you feel better soon, and I hope the IT band holds up for you.

Tricia—glad everything is working out with the hdtv. Hope you like it! Trust me, it WILL spoil you. I can’t watch anything in non-HD anymore without noticing all the fuzzy pictures. Of course, if the Steelers keep losing, it doesn’t matter if I get to watch it in regular or HD tv. :sad2:

Howard—hey bud! How’s it going? Glad to see you’re getting your Goofy training in. You totally amaze me with the last-minute cram training. I don’t know how you do it!

Lynne—don’t think I got a chance to tell you yet. Congrats on Hawaii! :thumbsup2

Bill/Mel—PLEASE make that humidity go away soon! I can’t take another marathon weekend with 300% humidity. Mel, I think you need to break out the homeless person clothes and start doing the cold weather dance! :)

Laurie—take it easy on that IT band. It’s nothing to mess with. It will only get worse if you run on it with it injured. Take it from someone who has done just that. I would take some time off from all running and just keep up your cross training and see how the next week or two progresses. It would be much better to show up at the marathon slightly undertrained and have to slow your pace than to show up injured and not even make the starting line (this is very near and dear to me since it’s how I ended up missing the Columbus marathon starting line 2 months ago). Hope everything works out for you!

Training’s been going pretty well, actually really well. I’ve only been running 3 times a week, but I’ve been swimming, biking and lifting quite a bit and I feel a lot stronger than I have for any other marathon. Granted, my pace has slowed, but I'm ok with that. We’ll see how that translates to 4 weeks from now, but anyway…

I finished my first “long ride” on the bike trainer yesterday and you know what? It wasn’t half as bad as I thought it would be. It was pretty monotonous, but it definitely beat doing a long spin at the gym, which is what I’ve been doing since the weather got cold. I just put in a movie and spun at a comfortable cadence and kept an eye on my heart rate, and it wasn’t too bad. I don’t know if I could do 4 or 5 hours on the trainer like Lynne does (that’s crazy!!), but maybe half of that.

Ok, gotta go get some work accomplished. Sorry that I missed some of you. Good job to everyone getting the miles in, and to those fighting injury—take it easy. Not too much longer now, guys!

Steve

Congrats on all these LRs! :woohoo:

Jen, I read your report and it sounds like you did great! :goodvibes

OK, so DH is back at work from the stomach flu and so far we have all been blessed and nobody else has gotten sick. :thumbsup2
I wiped everything down over and over again and made him stay in the bedroom. This week is just too crazy to get sick. Plus, I would just hate for the girls to miss any of their parties or field trip.
Thanks for all the pixie dust - it worked! :wizard:

Officially started my half training yesterday. Did an easy run of 2 miles, pace was at 10:54. Today I was to do a moderate run for 2 miles. I did it in exactly 20 minutes! My fastest pace yet! :woohoo:

Course, I totally feel like a stuffed sausage. I'm about to pop out of all my clothes. By the time I get back from WDW in a couple weeks you'll probably be able to just roll me in the door. DH brought home a box of fudge from a client and I swear it is calling my name. :headache:

So I need some advice, I need to run while we're at WDW, but they are still pretty short runs. I'll be in week 3 of 15. Would it be terrible to miss the two shorter runs of 2 miles each and just get in my 3 miler moderate run and my LR of 4? I keep looking at our plans and I don't really know how I'm gonna be able to squeeze all these in in addition to DH running, too. (We'll have to take turns because of the kids.) Thoughts?

Stay warm everyone! It was 28 when I dropped the kids off this morning at school. I waited until about 11:00 to go run. I'm such a wimp! :rolleyes1

Missing runs won't hurt you overall if you are still consistent over the entire training period. Most of the plans figure you will miss runs here and there. I think someone mentioned to Bingham or Galloway that they did every run in the plan and Bingham or Galloway were shocked because that is almost unheard of. I have missed plenty of runs due to weather, injuries or just lack of time. Your overall pace may be slower because of it but it won't keep you from completing especially this early on.

Hey everyone... just a quick note. I was sick all week and am still fighting it. I have nausea, congestion... all those good things. DH last night got the full blown vomitting, so I consider myself lucky. But I did miss all running this weekend. I haven't actually ran since last Monday. This is not good being so close to end and my 20 miler this weekend. I am freaking out a bit!!!

Things have been crazy hectic both at work and home. I will try to pop in later if I get a chance!

Greetings all -

I'm having serious WTO/LTO :headache: but I'm still pretty much on track with training. I did miss this morning but that's because I had to do my L/R yesterday and my husband kept me out way too late at a party so yes it's all his fault. :rolleyes1

Did my seven on the TM yesterday. This Saturday I'm doing the whole 13.1 and would REALLY like to do it outside, please, Mother Nature if you're listening!

OK back to work. :coffee:

Bill, thanks for the advice. That is good to know! :thumbsup2

I have to apologize for not being on the WISH boards. Life has been so crazy (as I am sure it is for all of you!). I am still unpacking boxes, I have family coming next weekend and I really want the house to look decent. Plus homeschooling my DD7, and all the everyday stuff, plus my 2 year old has officially hit the terrible 2's:sad2: She's horrible!!

Anyway, even tho I haven't been on the boards, I have been getting my miles in. I am training on my TR during the week and I strictly walk so I can save my knees. My LRs on the weekend, I combo walk/run. I got my 20 miles in last weekend and it was not as scary as I thought it would be :rotfl: I felt really good the whole time, the weather was beautiful and I finished in 3:58:20. I am super proud of myself and now I have the confidence that I can finish the goofy :yay:

I am gonna try to catch up with everyone's posts now!

OK! Great minds work alike! Just jumped off the trainer. Popped in Aqua Marine and rode away! 1:30 was the time! It was 45 and BEAUTIFUL! So I would have rather been outside...but, Youth and Family Services would look down upon me leaving my children alone at home to get in a ride:laughing: ...YES they are out of school for Christmas break!:scared1:
The "ride" was not too bad...

Mel - Way to go on the 20 miles!! I can totally relate to the sweaty shorts after the bathroom break. It's just yucky.

Laurie - :wizard: for your knee!!

Cam - Woohoo on the 20 miles :cool1:

Susie - :wizard: for your back!

Diane - I feel for you with all the snow! I totally don't miss it. I know my family got about a foot.

Scott - 8 miles in the pouring rain?? Yuck! Way to go on the speed!

Vic - Great job on the 18! Glad you had better luck with your feet. I have to put body glide all over my feet before my runs or I get lots of blisters.

Jackie - Glad you are able to run again! I hate when my ipod dies! I am so afraid of that happening during the marathon.

Lisa - WTG on the 7 miler!!

Bill - Great job on the 20! :woohoo:

Howard - Good job getting the miles in! :thumbsup2

Tricia - How exciting a new tv! DH is dying to get a new one. We had a 50 inch plasma in our last house, but had to leave it as part of the sale. He was pretty bummed.

Renee - Good luck on your 18!

Jen - Congrats on the half!!

Leana - Yay!! How are you feeling after all those miles? I have the same plan as you. I am going to try to go slow for the half. I would really like to keep myself at about a 3 hour half and then do whatever I feel I can do for the full.

Shan - I hope Dh feels better soon and you and the kids avoid getting it. What half are you training for?

Judy - WTG on the 7 miles! And goodluck next weekend :wizard:

Sorry to any that I missed!

This is the last official week before Taper Maddness starts. I want this right out front: You are not allowed to bame me for what I do between now and the 12th of January.

I have the tag fairy bound and gagged and hidden in the barn. The Chocolate lab is guarding her to make sure she doesn't get away.

For the next 26 days, you may talk like a pirate or an Aussie if you wish. You no longer must adhere to the strict dress code when at the keyboard.

Born to be wild Panda:hippie:

Ah, g'day Wish Panda, now what's wrong odd about talking like an Aussie, eh cobber, I mean so we have to add the word 'prawn' or 'barbie' in every sentence, and everything gets condensed to no more than two syllables (I live in 'straya', not australia) but she'll be right mate. Fair dinkum to ya... sorry, turned into 'cork headed koala' there, perhaps the taper madness has already begun and I haven't even done my long run yet!!!!

Well took a running break last week as I felt sooooo tired that I was sure I was going to sick before this week - which immediately (of course) flared my PF right back up again - AGGGGGHHHHHHHH, why does resting kick mine off!!! Am back on the stretching and the ice, and I may go and see the nice sympathetic physio for an ultrasound blast today or tomorrow. Did my hour this morning and it's a bit niggly, but it does calm down when I run so fingers crossed by Friday/Saturday's 11/22 it'll be back to 'under control'.

Anyway, good luck for everyone this weekend, - Helen

Becky, you sound busy!

I'm signed up for the Atlanta ING Half in March.

I've become a little obsessed talking about it. :confused3

I best be able to finish it. :lmao:

Since my IT Band is really acting up, looks like I am going to stick with XT for the rest of my training, to try to get to the start and finish the marathon in the least amount of pain as possible. I am not really happy about this, but I think it is the only way to get through the next 27 days!! So, the plan is to head to the gym tonight and hit the elliptical. I will report back later!

monte--I am doing my best to stretch and ice my leg now--hopefully it will help!

Susie--Hope your back is feeling better! I actually saw the Athletic Trainer at our high school today and he said it is definetely my IT Band. He was nice enough to show me some exercises to do, and he told me that if I come up a few days a week at lunch time he will do them with me...so hopefully that will help!!

Christa--I have been following the Hal Higdon plan exactly so I don't think it is the mileage. I do only have one LR of 20 miles left this weekend. My longest LR has been 18 miles, so even if I don't get the 20 miler in, I think I will be ok. I am going to rest it as much as possible! thanks for the advice!

VIc--Glad to hear you had a nice run yesterday.

Terri--Don't you love when relatives just stop in!! Hope you were able to get your run in today!

Jackie--Glad to hear your first run in 12 days went well!! :cool1:

Howard--I can't believe you are just starting your Goofy training...I would never make it if I just started!!!

Tricia--So awesome about the TV!! I truly believe that some things happen for a reason...somebody somewhere was trying to tell you something by not letting your charges go through!!

Renee--I agree with you on the mental part...for me, that is the hardest part--making myself believe that I can do this!!!

Jen in GA--I have been making myself stop running if it starts to hurt. although, it is time to just rest it and not run at all for a little bit--time to rely on XT!

Leana--Awesome job on your 2 LR's this weekend!

Steve--Thanks for the advice-I am taking it and sticking to XT the next few weeks.

Jen--Hope you are feeling better soon!

Becky--Glad to hear your training is going well, and i hope life slows down for you! Believe me, I know the feeling!!

Sorry to anyone I missed but it is time to head to the gym!!
