Wk of Aug 6--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

I went out Sat morning to do the first LW/R using MfM W/R a full. I read the mileage wrong and ended up doing 6 miles in 1h40m. It was slower than I wanted but not bad for my first long walk. I need to improve the pace. This program will put me aon track for the Army Ten Miler on Oct 8. I have to do 32 min of w3/r1 tomorrow night along with a 5 min wu/cd. I figure if I complete the during the week trianing also, the weekend stuff will improve.

Great job for all who did races this weekend.

Everyone is doing great with their training also. Keep up the good work.

Sunny - hope you get feeling better soon.

Kelley - pixiedust: for your nephew and prayers for you and your family.

Krista - Yep, I am ready for some FOOTBALL!! We fans need to have pre-season games to warm up our lungs for the all the yelling and screaming we do during the season :teeth:
Your Steelers are coming to visit Philly in a few weeks. I have Eagles season tix, but won't be at the game. One of my best friends is a huge Steelers fan, so whenever they come to town I give her my tickets.

Mel - Thanks for posting that website. I guess I have a ways to go before I can join that club.

NYcpa - Good job on the walk. I've been thinking about trying the MfM plan to get ready for Goofy 07. I just don't know if I can watch the clock to keep track of the w/r times. Now, I start out running and walk when I need to, then run again. I just don't feel like I'm building up to run longer between the walk breaks.

Kristi
- Great job on your 5K

Lynn - Are you doing IM Wisconsin to try to qualify for Kona? That is one of my dreams. If I keep training, maybe I'll finally make it in the 50 or 60+ age group!

I rebounded from yesterday's stonker. I went out and r/w 4 miles today on a somewhat hilly route. Finished in 56:33 which is about a 14:08 mpm pace. I felt better during and after the workout, too. Must have been my new WISH shirt and socks that I wore. :teeth:

Terri

Terri - i set my watch for a continuous 5 min interval. Every time it beeped, I woule run for a min and walk until it beeped again. I got fairly good at guessing when it would beep and when the 1 min of running should be done. I also set the chronograph to keep track of total ellapsed time and each 2 mile interval. The 3rd interval was to longest as I walked it with not running.

Hi all, managed to miss out on all of last week, but I gather DL packets are on their way - so, about a month of pleading looks at the postie until I get mine then!!!! I didnt' have such a good training weekend, weather was dreadful and so I failed on my attempt to reach 2 hours AGAIN. I did do 50 minutes on the treadmill though (which was all I officially had to do). I have to do the 2hours this weekend though or I'm in serious trouble - I have a feeling it'll be like work though, can never be bothered to write my features until deadline day as I need the stress to motivate me.

Anyway, I'm off now to run 6km - Adidas are running free training races to get everyone ready for the big half marathon here. I got round last week in 35.12, so we'll see what happens this week. Helen

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

I had a rest day yesterday. Worked in the backyard setting up a swingset for the princesses princess: princess:. Not too much to report.

Krista- congrats on your 5K. WTG on your time. Are you legs feeling OK? DW and I were on the couch watching football last night. It's like an old friend being back. Love it, love it, love it. Oooh, my fantasy football draft is coming up soon.

Kelley- Sending out good thoughts for your nephew. :wizard: :wizard: I hope he recovers from his burst appendix OK.

Mel/Chimera- Hmmm, I've never done a live chat. Might be kind of fun. I'll have to see if it works into the schedule. That Stumpy's Marathon sounds really funny in DE.

Carrie- Sorry to hear about your stonker run. Those are so tough to deal with. I'm so excited about my shirts. Thanks again for organizing all that shipping. I'm so impressed with how fast you turned it around.

Paul- Good luck fitting your run in sometime this week. Were you able to do any training this weekend?

Kristi- Nice job with your training run.

Lynne- Great to hear from you!!! Good luck on your training for Wisconsin. I'm really hoping that you make that Kona goal!

Kathy- Great job on your LW. WTG!

Terri- I'm ready for football too. Your Eagles looked good last night on their first drive. I'm so glad that TO is out of there. Good job rebounding from your stonker run over the weekend.

Helen- Good to hear from you too!

Jodi- So how did your ice cream 5k go on Sunday?

OK, off to do my leg exercises. I'm planning on running on the track again today - walk lap, run 1.5 miles, walk lap, 3x. I'll check in later to let you know how it goes.

Did a big training weekend this weekend. Major confidence boost for IM Moo which is 5 weeks from now. It's not so much about being able to do the distance as whether some time goals I've set for myself are realistic. Rode 117.3 miles on Saturday in the Adirondack Mtns and then ran 18.2 miles on the Ironman Lake Placid course today w/ Mom providing a moving aid station on her bike. Did it over 10 minutes faster for an extra 0.3 miles than the 18 for this year's WDW marathon and that was after yesterday's 'short, little' ride. This coming weekend is a 80 mile bike and the longest run scheduled at 20 and then it's Timberman and taper. Told Mom that if triathlon brains are messed up, there must be a special brand of screwed up reserved for people who specialize in long distance triathlons. This is our idea of "fun"? Oh boy.
Lynn - You were right in my backyard and didn't give me a call? I would have run in Lake Placid with you!!Best of luck in your race.

Krista - WTG on the 5K. :cheer2: I hope you're feeling no ill effects today.

Kelley - Keeping your nephew in my thoughts and prayers. :wizard:

Mel - If I can stay up for it, live chat sounds like fun. :confused3 Thanks for the website links. Stumpy's sounds like a blast.

Carrie - Sorry your run didn't meet your expectations. Thank you so much for all of your work with the shirts. I love mine

Paul - I followed Hal Higdon's Intermediate II for Goofy this year and it served me well. Maybe you really want to tri...

Kristi - Great time on the mock 5K. :cool1:

Helen - I know you'll break 2 hours this weekend and put that milestone behind you. :grouphug: Best of luck with your 6km.

Saturday the training plan called for 8 one mile repeats at 20 seconds faster than marathon pace with 1/4 mile recovery in between. Yesterday was a lot of pilates and stretching plus upper body weights.

DH went out for another 10 miler yesterday with much better results than the previous one. Glad he was able to get a confidence boosting run in. It must have been the DL packet that provided the necessary inspiration.

Today was 5.5 miles on the treadmill. Looking forward to traveling this week.

My marathon WISH list includes Marine Corps Marathon, Philadelphia Marathon, Portland Marathon.

Happy training to all.

Good morning all. :teeth:

Saturday was a rest day, so nothing to report. Yesterday Charlie and I hit the pavement for 40 minutes. I couldn't tell you how far I went or my pace since my Garmin took 35 minutes to reset itself. I hadn't used it since Italy. It kept asking me if I was inside. I think I did pretty well. But I really REALLY need to get out on the road more. It's not as easy as the TM. I need to find a nice balance between getting used to the asphalt and not killing my knees.

And now.....without further ado.....presenting Judith Anne's Adventures in Running Shoe Shopping....

I have been so far training in my old New Balance Cross Trainers. It's REALLY time for new running shoes. So off we go to the mall yesterday. First stop, I forget the names of some of the stores, something like Running Shoes R Us. A young girl was on her cell phone, popping gum, twirling her hair. I half expected Katherine Zeta-Jones to step out and do a T-Mobile commercial. So after ten minutes of looking over their rather limited selection, I chose one pair I wanted to try on. So I walk up to the counter and she yells at me mid-conversation "WHAT SIZE?" I tell her eight and a half wide. She says "WE DON'T CARRY WIDE" and keeps right on with her conversation, gum-popping and hair twirling. So, we walk out.

On to Foot Locker. Where I spend 20 minutes looking at shoes. I pick out three pair. We look for someone to help me. Finally two young men walk out of the back room, both bouncing basketballs. You know how they wear those striped shirts to they look like umpires? One guy had on a shirt that was ten times too big, it was untucked and his sneakers were untied. Then, despite the fact that I was standing there holding three shoes, he looks right at my husband and says "Need anything?" Charlie tells him that I would like to try those running shoes on. So Mr NBA Draft Candidate looks at me, looks at the running shoes, then looks at me, as if to say, "Yeah....SURE." But instead he mumbles "whatdoyouneed?" I want to tell him "I need to speak to your manager and then when I am done with him I want a few words with your mother!" But instead I tell him my size. He says they don't carry wide. I say "fine" and we leave.

Then we go to Lady Foot Locker. A young man with the worst case of acne I have ever seen comes bouncing up to Charlie. Umm, OK aren't we in LADY Foot Locker??? Charlie tells him I am looking for shoes. He looks at me, again, with this once-over bit. OK I may not LOOK athletic but I'm on my way there, OK????? So he asks me what I want. I tell him I need a wide with. He says they don't carry wide but they have one Asics that people with wide feet buy. So I ask him if I can see it. It's a $130 shoe, which is more then I intended to spend, but since I budgeted about a hundred, it was not totally out of the question. So I try it on. It feels like Heaven on my feet, which I comment on. He says "Yeah, they are great for standing in all day". Now, I figure he's assuming I am going to be wearing them on my way between the refrigerator and the couch. I'm starting to get annoyed with the insinuations and attitudes I am getting from these salespeople. So I tell him point-blank: "I am training for the WDW Half Marathon. Mind if I take a spin in these"? And with that I go RUNNING as fast as I can out into the mall, dodging people, looking like a complete idiot, but making my point. Amazing what a difference it made when I came back. Suddenly he was all professional like, talking to me about inserts and treating me like a RUNNER. Well, too bad. I wasn't in the mood anymore to buy running shoes. I told him I'd have to think about it.

And with that, I went over to the Discovery Store and sat in their massage chair for ten minutes.

No one took me seriously about needing RUNNING shoes. I guess because I have some weight to lose. This kinds irked me. Today I am calling the Sports Authority to see if they carry wide before I go up there. I can't wait to find a shoes I like so I can buy it on-line from now on.

Geez. :sad2:

Carrie - I got our shirts on Saturday. Even see a grown woman running around the driveway holding up a bright lime green shirt with tears running down her face? It wasn't pretty. But, well, that was me. I kept thinking, just as I did with the socks ,"Tangible evidence that I am actually DOING this!" Whoo hoo! I was tres excited! :woohoo: Thank you so much for heading this up. They are FABULOUS!

Sunny - I love the marathoner in taper shirt! :teeth: I have to order one. I already had the "taper discussion" with DH. I pointed out to him that I will be tapering around the holidays. Plus he will have his kids for ten days over Christmas. It might not be a pretty picture. Perhaps he might want to stay at his parents house with the kids. Just to be safe. I hope you are doing well today.

Craig - OMG! Your post made me laugh! :lmao: What a way you have with words! I'm sorry to hear all those crazy things happened to you, though. How nerve-wracking.

Kelley - OMG How is Matt today? :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Mel - The chatroom sounds great but I'm usually on only at work . Yes, when I'm supposed to be WORKING! :surfweb:

Dana – I am so glad you are doing better. That sounds so awful. I give you a lot of credit for getting back out there so quickly, but please do not overdo it.
Oh, and here is the scream team shirt I bought for DS for the DL ½:
http://www.cafepress.com/buy/WISH+t...146/pNo_60916146/id_12833099/opt_/pg_/c_/fpt_

Lily – Awesome photo album!

Melissa – How do you do it? I am scrapped just thinking about it.

Kelley – Said a prayer for Matt. I hope he has improved significantly by now.

Tiff – Awesome pace!

Kevin – I love that you invested all that time in planning your training. It really pumps up the enthusiasm, doesn’t it? I haven’t even looked at the training schedule for the full yet, because I am busy getting ready for the September ½. I figure I’ll jump in on the MfM Walk the Full schedule when we get back from California.

Krista – Congratulations on your PR on your 5K. That is so awesome! :cheer2:

Carrie – That is still a good pace. And don’t worry about being slower than last year. The heat is so wicked this year that it has to have affected your pace and you still have many months before you have to be where you want to be.

Wow, Kristi! You were smokin’!!!! Great job!

Thank you for the belated birthday wishes, guys! I LOVE late birthday wishes – they extend the celebration, you know? :teeth:

Yesterday was a rest day. We took DS to his camp bus (he’ll be gone the next 3 weeks. :sad1: ) Then to IKEA for a new kitchen table & chairs and DD’s desk chair and lamp and other odds and ends. I LOVE that store! Then to a humongous mall for some shopping.

Not much going on with me, training-wise. Will try to get to the gym tonight, but not sure I can make that happen. So glad to feel motivated by the progress everyone is experiencing.

Mel – That trail run sounds intriguing, but alas, we will be doing the Lance Armstrong Foundation 10K in Philadelphia that day, hopefully. If anyone wants to come to Delaware to do Stumpy’s Marathon, we’d LOVE to host you!

Kathy – Great job on your first LW/R!!!

Judy- You may want to try a speciality running store to get your shoes instead of the mall stores. I found they take a lot more time to find a shoe that fits your foot, and also the right shoe for what you want to do. They will take you seriously as a runner. Plus, they are usually smaller, local shops that are in tune with the local running scene. You may be able to find listings for local races, etc. I pasted in below the list of stores listed in runnersworld.com, but you can also just look in your local yellow pages too for running stores.

Hi everyone- I am posting to subscribe.

My name is Cecilia and I am running the WDW Marathon. Well, I intend to run the entire way.

I ran a 10K on Saturday. ITs my first 10K. If I had only done the 5K I would have had a PB and won my age group. I guess all the fast women were doing the 10K because I came in 8th. AND I did the 2nd 5k FASTER than the first. OH well. I was happy.

Honeibee - I COMPLETELY agree with Mouse Skywalker. I went to Fleet Feet on a busy Saturday and had a fantastic experience. Even though the store was packed, I had an experienced salesman spend over an hour making sure I had the right show. The shoes were reasonably priced too. I was willing to pay more for the better service and experienced fit but when I came home and priced them online, I got them at a very good price. (and under $100)

Don't let anyone tell you you aren't a runner simply because you don't look the part (yet) - I would have been so angry.

Kelley- Saying prayers for Matt, how scary, I hope he is doing better today.

Cecilia

Wow, Dave, thank you! Mt Kisco is about five minutes from me! I'll start there.

It was very discouraging to not be taken seriously. It was almost as if they were laughing at me behind my back. I get so much support and encouragement from you guys, it was a shock to be treated that way.

Thanks again Dave. :goodvibes

Oh great, I hope it works out for you Judy. I find the smaller stores are so much more supportive, and are really trying to promote the sport of running and support you as a runner/walker/whatever. I would much rather give my money to a small, local owner who's involved in the community than some mindless, faceless mall store.

Judy -- I am so sorry you went through that. I had a similar experience last year, and imagine me doing that at 60+ pounds heavier than I am now. I was so frustrated. I finally found great service at a local running store, much like Dave recommended and they treated me with great respect. I finally found "the" shoe at the new balance store and have been ordering it on line since then. It is discontinued now, but I have found it on runningshoes.com and it is less than $100. I can't imagine doing a distance event with any other shoe (I have very wide feet and these are 8.5 wide and feel like slippers!) PM me if you want more information. :grouphug: Oh, and BTW, I wonder when the last time is that ANY of those nincompoops did 3 miles. :thumbsup2

Judy - UGH! Sorry you encountered so much poor service in one day! I have to admit that I was dying laughing at you tearing out of the last store at a run in the shoes. That is SO something I would do! :rotfl: Go you! I do agree that the specialized stores will be better - I have had the same experience in the mall store with my DH. Compared with our local running store - I love going in there! They talk intelligently with me and assume that I have an idea of what I want and what I need. :lovestruc

Kelley - Praying for Matt and the family - I hope he is doing better.

Guess what? I went 8 miles last night! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc I am trying to tell myself this is a big deal because it is the farthest I have ever gone by two miles, but it still seems like small beans. Can you tell I am an over-achiever? I wanted to finish under 2 hours and I did - 1:50. Then I got home and mapped it out and I actually went farther than 8 miles, more like 8.5. So, woo hoo! I ended up walking more than I wanted...it was more humid than I thought it was and there was no breeze. I was on a trail and didn't start until 7:30. It got DARK at the end and I was all alone - DUMB!!!! My poor DH was so worried in the car with three kids waiting to pick me up...never again that late.

Just wanted to share my little personal achievement! Have a great training week! :woohoo:

Here's a belated 4th person encouraging you to hit the local running specialty store. Please don't be at all self-conscious about being there. Tell the sales person exactly your current state of training, and your goals for the next few months. The more accurate information you can give him or her, the better they can fit you. You'll find these places have a superior selection of shoes (and other gear), and people who are truly passionate about what they do.

Plus, although the offerings of the major running shoe manufacturers are pretty similar, they do vary in significant ways which will impact your satisfaction. Lasts can run narrow or wide, straight or curved, and the lift in the heel can be more or less, across manufacturers. Each matters a lot in getting the fit you want, and the knowledgeable staff at a running store can make this happen.

At this stage in my life I absolutely refuse to walk into a shopping mall, due to negative experiences (although not quite like yours). I will not accept inferior service, and I'm always happy to take my money and my business to stores that make it easy for me to get precisely what I want. For me it's Marathon Sports in Wellesley Hills.

Good luck.

Judy - Sorry about your unpleasant experience! You are an athlete!!!! It cannot be denied! :thumbsup2 So... as one athlete to another, I must tell you, don't buy your gear at the mall. Gear shopping is one of the coolest advantages of being an athlete!! It basically gives you an excuse to buy expensive and nerdy speciality items. In order to really savor your expensive, speciality, nerdy gear purchase, you should go somewhere where the selections are limitless, and the employees are also enthusiastic about the expensive, speciality, nerdy gear! Foot locker boy is only working there to pay for his car insurance for that pinto his grandmother bought him and to look for potential dates walking by. He is not passionate about the nerd gear. He cares about the pinto and the girl in the passenger seat! The longest distance footlocker, pinto drivin', girl chasing is going to run is to the food court on his lunch break. He doesn't know what kind of shoes you need, and sadly he doesn't care. Now, specialty store gentleman or lady likes to run. In fact, he/she runs to work to protect the environment and could outrun the pinto anyway!! They know their product, they know athletes! They have the same values (as far as training) and actually probably care what kind of shoes you get. My experience is that they are much more helpful and knowledgeable. Don't waste your money on pinto boy! Help support your fellow athletes by buying your shoes there and they support you by meeting your needs. Keep us posted on your shoe purchase!!!! Oh, btw, I hope you are not currently driving a pinto

Hi :wave2:

I went running today and covered 7.41 miles in 1:30:16 for an average pace of 12:11/ mi. It was extremely humid...not as hot :sunny: as last week, but twice as humid (yuk) :sad2: .

Not quite Stumpy's Marathon, but not bad for a training session. :rotfl: Stumpy's Marathon is a trail run and from reading the description, it is pretty hardcore....mud, hills, creeks, through brush, etc. Not my cup of Earl Grey if you know what I mean. :lmao:

Judy ~ Sorry to hear about your shoe shopping experience. Stick with the advice of your friends here.

Craig ~ I will be taking Ethical Issues in Business Environment and Managing Human Capital my first semester. I signed up today and am waiting for a confirmation before laying out the dough for the books.

Enjoy your Monday!

HEY!!! My Dad drove a Pinto... sad but true. I bet you those cars are worth money now. Assuming they haven't all blown up yet.

Just a quick drive-by post - please check out the Illuminations Dessert thread if you are planning to attend. I posted some new information today and will have more soon! Things are looking good and I can't wait for us all to celebrate together!

Not enough to report in the training area for me - I have been meeting with a personal trainer once a week for a few weeks and going to pilates and yoga class but haven't spent as much time as I should putting in the steps. Once I get the kids in school in the next 2 weeks it is time to get serious! My sciatica is still bothering me intermittently but I am still able to function without significant pain most of the day thankfully.

Judy - don't let those mall fools get you down. You have to remember that most real athletes/runners (like yourself!) aren't shopping for their shoes at the mall stores - most of the mall customers just want to look athletic and therefore don't need anyone with specific knowledge (or even remedial intelligence :rotfl2: ) to sell them shoes. You will find a world of difference between those sad salespeople and the ones you'll work with at a true running store. I went straight to a local running store for my shoes and the staff was amazing. I wouldn't go anywhere else at this point!

Kelley - prayers for Matt and all of your family. I know this must be so hard on all of you and hope that things improve quickly!

Sunny - where are you???? Hoping you are doing okay. I can't imagine how frustrated you are with this situation and I pray that resolution is around the next corner. :grouphug:

Total drive-by...

Just checked the WDW Marathon site. The Half-Marathon is now full, but space remains for the Full. They also updated the site with the link where you can verify your registration if you so desire.

Will catch up with everyone later!
