Wk of Aug 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Tracy and Lisa - Great job on your runs!

Angie - way to stay disciplined. Don't want to overdo it and re-injure yourself.

Stephanie - have a good trip!

Liz
- Good Luck Sunday!

Cam - way to go on your workout schedule. I just think you're amazing. Oh yeah, make sure Howard gets his massage :goodvibes

Kira - hope your back feels better. :wizard:

Judy - bummer about tyour knee. I hope everything works out.

Michelle - have you been hanging out with Judy? Hope your knee is ok, too. I don't think Judy wants to share Dr. hunka hunka burning love ;)

Shan - Glad to see you back training. Take it one step at a time. You'll be up to snuff in no time.

Krista - Glad you're having fun with Cater. He is adorable! Don't forget to log his miles, along with your own. He may need his own log book! :)

I had a great r/w going last night, until the thunder and lightning started. :sad2: I had planned 5 miles, but could only get a 5k in. At about 2 miles I heard the first thunder. Decided to pick up the pace to at least get the 5k in. Finished in 39:13 (about a 13mpm pace). Best part was I felt great! I went with a w2/r2 and it really seemed to work for me. I'm going to stick with that for a bit to see how it goes.

Have a good day everyone.
Terri

Hi Salli - I did CDC last year but wasn't able to due to conflicts this year. I plan to do it again tho as I really enjoyed the scenery (and Chicago, oh and seeing Pat!!). You said McCormick place was at mile 1.5... is that a change from last year? I thought McC was around 4.5-5 last year.

Hey Team - I got out for a family bike ride last night. I pulle DD5 in the trailer... all 45 pounds of her plus the trailer. And she wiggles a lot, so it's a chore. I should get double miles for that. And at the end we did a sprint to beat dad and all I heard from her was "weeeeeeeeeeeeee".

Oh and DD7 (bless her heart as she is my sweet sensistive girl) told me last night how proud she was of me for getting back into shape. I ran on Tuesday, biked on Thursday and have been doing crunches. My mom's health issues and my work stress has really put a damper on all things in my life. But after my mom came out of surgery with thumbs up, there is no reason for me to let my health suffer. So I am back on track!

Greetings fellow racers -

I slept in today so missed my XTing. However, I plan to do most of it in front of the tv during the Opening Ceremonies.

 :cheer2: :yay: Go Team USA Equestrians!!:cheer2: :yay: :woohoo:

Terri - Ha ha ha on the sharing of Dr HHBL! And after all this, he's married anyway. Oh yeah, so am I. :lmao:

Jen - You go girl! :woohoo: I'm glad to see you back on track too. You NEED this after all you've been thru. A little "Jenn Time", KWIM??

Michelle
- Hows the knee today? :wizard:

Howard - How are you doing today??? :wizard:

Krista, Tracy, Jeff, Terri and Judy - Thanks for all the :wizard: for the knee! I think it worked! :thumbsup2

While it's still a little sore, it is sooooooooo much better today. I have been icing and stretching too. Hopefully, it will be as good as new (ok...I'll settle for like it was before ) soon and I will be able to get in a run, or at least a walk, while in Idaho. We shall see...

And Jeff...you can still push me in the wheelchair at DL no matter what! For one, I will probably need it after 13.1 miles and two, NO WAIT for Nemo!!! :lmao: I am totally just kidding! I will be there whether I am gimping it up or not!!!

Have a great weekend, team! I'm off to Idaho!
(I will try and check in, but not sure if I'll be able to get to the computer or not!):wave2:

Pat, and Jim - yay - I'm looking forward to having y'all in the group - always makes the first few miles fly by!

Jen - yes, the course is VERY different from the past two years. I HIGHLY encourage anyone doing the race to download the interactive map that John has placed on the site. You'll see that we're starting out immediately going South - we do not go North at all now, and we do not go through town anymore. That means two things - first, you won't be protected from the early sunrise by the buildings - and second, less of a stroll through our business districts....

Here's my analysis of the new course (but John's course talk would be the best..)

The new course begins in Grant Park and heads South onto Lakeshore Drive - to 18th. We meander around the parking lot at Soldier Field at Mile 2 (the one South of the stadium) and head into McCormick Place. This is where the inside toilets can be found if you're desperate (hopefully) OR you'll have your first bathroom stop at Mile 2.5, just after McCormick Place, where there will also be gatorade and water.

We continue South on the inside lakefront path until Mile 3.25, when we cross over 18th street, and move down the entrance ramp to Southbound LakeShore Drive. Welcome to LakeShore! At Mile 4.5, we hit our next water/gatorade/porta stop, still heading South on LSD. (Roughly 39th street). At 51st (Mile 6.5) we will hit our next gatorade/water stop.

We will be on LakeShore until 53rd street, where we jump off, make a hairpin turn and find ourselves on a lovely path. We're approaching Mile 7 now, and here we DO start to share space with Northbound runners. We will be heading down the Northbound side of LakeShore drive now, in the far East lane....fun stuff! There is water and gatorade at Mile 7 (a shared stop which we'll hit again on the Northbound side)....we make the turn just past the Beach House at 57th street, and now we're heading home!

It's all path running from here - just head North and enjoy the gorgeous views of the beaches to your right and the skyline up ahead...

The next water stop is MILE 9.25. All path until Mile 10, where we will have a bit of rough terrain...another water stop at 10.25. Then we're running through beautiful Burnham Park - Daniel Burnham's vision for the city of Chicago and site of the World's Fair. The view of the waterfront is gorgeous here, and a lot of work has recently been done to improve the lakefront...smile and enjoy it!

At Mile 11.5, we're approaching another Gatorade/water stop (this is 31st street) and we are usually greeted by the smell of great Ribs being made at the 31st street beach house! Bring your cash or attempt to get by without indulging :)

We continue up through the park through Mile 12, where we pass the Chicago Firefighter and Paramedic Memorial park, honoring Chicago's fallen firefighters and paramedics. You can understand as you run by why folks would want to remember their loved ones here, in one of the most beautiful spots we have to offer :)

Mile 12 also brings us to the shade and the large fountain at McCormick place - if you're hot and sweaty, you might get lucky enough to catch the mist off the large waterfall to your left. Enjoy the shade, here because we're getting close! Soldier Field appears on our left and we're in the home stretch!

We pass Mile 13 while next to the marina - and at about the endzone of the field! The last water stop is here - and then it's a mini left, and a scoot around in FRONT of the Shedd Aquarium! We'll pass one of my favorite statues ever - "Man with a Fish" - which is gorgeous! - and the Shedd, home to some 22,000 fish and marine wildlife - love it! Then it's down under LakeShore drive, and through the best finishing underpass in the world - more runners go through this chute every year, and they sing and cry and laugh and it's AWESOME to be a part of a race where we can do it...

(Yes, whoever is left with me will be smiling here, darnit). Then it's up our ONLY hill (mini - very small) coming out of the shoot, and into the rocking finish, where we will kick some serious bootay.

Okay, i got a little excited just then, but part of what I want is to experience the gorgeous lakefront for all it has to offer! I promise to be part tour guide, part cheerleader, and hopefully set the right pace!

I'll see you all on Sunday! Drink up, rest up, and bring it!

Sallie

Hi everyone! Especially Judith. We know why you slept in and missed your XT. :rolleyes1 :woohoo:

I have not run/XT'ed or anything mildly strenuous since Tuesday when my three miler turned into a 3 mile walk. I have not had any pain, tenderness or soreness for the last two days. So, I think I am good for a trial run of 3 (easy ones) tomorrow. If that works out well, I'll run again on Sunday (possibly 5 miles). However, if I feel a twinge of any sort on Saturday, I'll scale it back to a walk and continue to rest it.

I will be researching recommended stretching exercises for the thigh tonight and make sure I am prepared for the 3 miles tomorrow morning.

I'll post an update then, hopefully a good one.

Enjoy your weekends everyone! HAPPY TRAINING!

:grouphug:

Howard

Sallie - thanks for the great description!

Howard - Yay on the pain free couple days! Just BE CAREFUL! Sounds like you know that and have a plan, just want to put that reminder out there as a caring fellow teammate.

Hi Everyone....
Just getting up after staying up to watch the Olympic Opening ceremonies!!!
I did my 4 miles last night and it went pretty well.

I think my decision has been made for me about possibly doing the ToT. I got an email today with a survey about my college marching band. This year will mark the 75th anniversary of it and they are getting info for doing an alumni band gathering. The weekend for this is the same weekend of the ToT. So, for now the ToT is a BIG IF!!
So thinking about making plans to go to WDW the weekend before just to go, since won't be going again until December. I got a gift card for a Ride-A-Long Richard Petty Experience so I think that is when I will do it is in October. Last visit was May and I'm now having some Disneyworld Withdrawal. Hopefully, my small trip out to CA will help. My nephew goes with us in December and I know he won't want to be standing out there on the track waiting for me to do my thing, he wants to be in the parks!!

I have my 13 miles on schedule for training tomorrow. Weather should be ok in the morning.

Good Luck tomorrow Liz on your first HALF Marathon!!!

Good afternoon everyone! I wanted to post my "post hip flexor strain" numbers for this morning.

As promised I went out for an easy run of 3 miles. I took it easy and did well. Before I get ahead of myself, I downloaded some stretching exercises for the hip flexor and stretched it out good before I hit the road this morning. My plan was to run 3, but I decided to run 4 when everything seemed to be going pretty well. I definitely took it easy. I stopped at the end of each mile and stretched out a bit more (just as a precaution).

I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking about the hip flexor with every foot strike. I certainly felt its presence once or twice, but nothing more than a "Hey! Remember me!" kind of feeling.

Here are my stats for today:

Miles: 4
Time: 38:29
Pace: 9:37

Splits:
10:07
9:59
9:18
9:04

Tomorrow I will take the same precautions and run 5 (or 6) if I am feeling up to it. At this point, I should be.

Have a great weekend!

I wanted to share this pic with you guys from my race today. The old fellow on the left is 85 and still a competitive racewalker, then me and finally the Tenn mens senior champ.

Resting Panda:hippie:

Hi everyone! My race last night went well then I went home and watched the rest of the Olympic Opening ceremony. I'll post a full report in the race thread for those who want to read it.

Panda, what a cool picture. We have a gentleman who walks/jogs some of our races who is in his early 80s, and by golly I hope I still have that kind of stamina when I'm that old.

Jennifer

Tracy - The alumni band gathering sounds really neat! What did you play?

Dave - WTG on your race today and thanks for the pic. Lookin' good!

Jennifer - congrats on the new PR!

Tracy - completely understand on the band thing (fellow band geek here) and good luck on your long walk tomorrow.

Just spending a little time surfing before settling in to watch the Olympics for a bit then bed. 4am comes around way too quick.

Went to the expo, got packet and cool shirt with penguin on it. Expo itself was pretty small but that was ok as it meant less for me to spend $$ on. Met Pat and DH Jim plus Susie and DH Steve. Went for lunch (bit of a walk and place we wanted to go had hour wait), visited for a bit then walked back with Pat and Jim thru Millenium Park to see the "Bean".

Hope everyone has a great evening!

TXAng and Liz and others who are interested:
In Middle and HIgh School I was in the percussion section but specialized in Mallet Percussion (Xylophone, bells, Marimba, chimes, etc.) In High school I played Alto Saxophone in Jazz Band and then Tenor Sax in Symphonic Band my 11th & 12th grade years. In College I marched my Alto Sax, played it for Basketball Pep Band and my last year I was in the color guard (twirled flag and rifle). I still play my sax for alumni band which is usually every three years. I LOVED MARCHING BAND!!!! I loved band period.!!:cool1:
I am a big band geek!!!

Racey Tracy!!
