Wk of Aug 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi, everyone! Not much to report here.
Ran 2 miles Tuesday, did the recumbent bike at the Y for an hour yesterday and ran 2 miles today. Have been keeping up with my 100-150 crunches and 125 pushups every day (since July 7).
Howard's being well-behaved and NOT pushing it. I can't tell you how hard that is for him. For some of us, we have to get motivated to train. For Howard, you practically have to tie him down. (Uh-oh! I'd better not give him any ideas. ;) )

Angie -- I am so proud of you, girl! I know your work ethic and I know you have an inner race horse, so kudos to you for keeping the big picture and the long run (pun intended!) in mind.

Stephanie -- Have a great visit!

Bill -- so glad to hear that you are carb loading with only the best of food options. Tell me -- do Lynnda's cakes taste as wonderful as they look? Did you ask her to make you a "Cars" theme cake?

Hi to everyone else I've missed. We have been dealing with very unpredictable computer access issues at my office, so I will go tend to those. Stay hydrated and healthy everyone! :goodvibes

Hello everyone!

Sorry no time to catch up individually right now. Great job to those getting out, get well and take care to those nursing injuries.

Not much going on here except finding out exactly what taper madness means. Been sticking to the plan except for a little extra swimming (use mainly upper body and it helps me relax). Looks like the weather will cooperate for Sunday - sunny, low humidity and looks like temps in the low 60's at start.

Keep up the great work and have a great day!!

Good morning everyone!

Just checking in for a few minutes. I finally got around to booking our room for Marathon weekend. We're staying at Wilderness Lodge - this is my husband's choice, I probably would have gone with an Epcot resort, but I'm sure we'll love the Lodge.

I woke up this morning with an achy back. I changed my pillows last night and I think that they didn't work well for my back. I was going to run this morning, but I think I'm going to wait and hopefully I'll feel better later. I also used it as an excuse to book myself a sports massage tomorrow! Yay! (and they are having a 35% off special so that's even better!) After all, I need to be ready for my 8-miler this weekend.

My big task today is a drive up to JFK to pick my daughter up after her 4 weeks in Spain. We can't wait to see her!

Have a great day everyone and happy training!

Hi everyone. Life has yet again been very crazy for me. My mom had her surgery on Monday. It was quite risky and they weren't giving her the greatest odds. After 4 hours (well actually 5 since she had one short and one long surgery), she is on the mend. Lots of tubes in her, she can't walk or talk, but she is recovering. The surgeon is VERY happy with the results (that's what you get with a top rated surgeon!!).

So, I ran on Tuesday... crunches on Sunday and Monday, and nothing yesterday. But that is a BIG improvement. If everything goes well, we will be in WDW in 9 DAYS!!! YIPPPEEE. Bad news, I will be working from my room since all this crud has happened here. We are short staffed at work and it is risky even leaving.

I have been spending at least 1 -1 1/2 hours each night in my basement studio working on custom outfits for the girls. It's been fun and I hope this makes it magical for them. We have been through so much the last year that they deserve some happy things!!!

RUN/WALK on my friends!! I hope to be getting back in action soon. I may try for a 5K the weekend after Labor Day and hopefully my annual Rump Roast Run the end of September.

Greetings fellow racers -

I did 45 min on the TM this morning, just to show that meniscus who's boss! It hurt a little but not enough to stop. I did, however, go a little bit slower than usual.

Debra - Don't you worry you're pretty little head about January. This stinking meniscus didn't stop me last time and it won't stop me again! :woohoo: And yes, I did know Cary Grant never said that. But he could have pretty much said anything he wanted to me. It wouldn't have mattered. Had I ever actually met the man I would have swooned and passed out any way. :faint:

Howard - Want me to come down and bring my Foam Roller???? ;)

Jennifer - Thank you for putting your name in your signature since I can never spell Wellsel....Wellys....that place. :rolleyes1 I'm your Chunky Money girl so I can't speak for Russian coffee ice cream. However...I never met an ice cream I didn't like! :thumbsup2

Angie - I am SO happy things are going well for you. Please please please don't push it! BTW, any thoughts about volunteering in January????? :yay:

Ok...here it goes...I've missed a few days!

Kira - WTG on the first 7 miler! Keep it up!
Debra - We've already covered this (and I'm sure you're hangin' out my my freezer waiting for me to buy more...) Mocha Almond Fudge and/or Peanut Butter 'n' Chocolate. YUM!
Stephanie - Great speed workout! I could only dream of being that fast!
Carrie - I like your kind of bike ride! So much better than my idea of riding to the running group, running and then riding home! What was I thinking???
Howard - :worship: on the 180.55 mile total! That's awesome! Hope the injury is better! Take it easy this weekend!
Stacie - Great job on your first lap attempt. It will get better. Although I still haven't mastered the breathing yet either. Hoping to work on that a little more before I sign up for another tri!
Tracy - Already packing for DL?!? At this rate, you won't have to worry about flying...you'll just float there! :cloud9:
Jeff - Yes, Jeff...YAR! And you are a NUT! But at least you're good at it and proud of it!
Angie - No pain! :yay: And :thumbsup2 for knowing not to push it to fast!

AFM - I finally forced myself to do my LR yesterday. What a mistake. I knew it was hot and humid (92) but I had to either get it in or not do it! I finally did 9 miles. I thought I was doing everything right, but I think I ended up with a little case of heat stroke from being out there so long! Then, at about 6.5 miles, it felt like someone had stabbed me in the back of the knee with a needle or something. The pain went away, so I shrugged it off and kept going. Took a lovely (and my first) ice bath when I got home! Took DD to swim lessons and then even went ahead and met up with the running group. I knew better than to even try running, so I just walked. Another 2.5 miles and still nothing from the knee. Last night is when it hit. It was hurting so bad, so I iced it. This morning...it's still just as bad!!! :headache: So I took some advil. I sure hope this gets better soon...I'm going to DL at the end of the month!!! Anyway, off to Idaho tomorrow for DH's family reunion. I won't have access to a computer so I'll catch up next week!

Ummm...Michelle.....I hate to bring this up....but....

Both times when I tore my meniscus it felt like I was getting stabbed in the back of the knee. I can tell you exactly when it happened on both occasions. I REALLY hope that's not what happened to you.

Reporting in for this week.

I have been cleared to start running again! It has been a very humbling week. I am starting from square one - using the same program I used when I first started running. Hopefully, I'll build up to running all of the January Half. I think I have time, I initially thought I wouldn't be able to run until September, so I have a month extra to work with. For now I'm doing a run/walk, I think it is wise of me to start slow - I was surprised how much I have lost - very, very humbling! I'm also struggling a bit with motivation. I'm kinda bummed I have to go back for more surgery right after the Half due to the complications I had. This is kinda playing mind games with me - like I want to run the Half, but I know after I run it I'll be coming home for more surgery. Does that make any sense?

Sooo anyway,
warmup & cooldown
1.50 miles / 30:00
run1/walk2
6.53 miles / 1:36:00
total
8.03 miles / 2:06:00

My average pace during my run/walks for the week was 14:41 so I guess I'm in the required Half pace at this point? I can't believe I used to get mad at myself when I went over 11:00! :rotfl:

I'm hoping to get back to real life now and get back in the groove here. The girls go back to school next week so I might actually get some computer time now to keep up on this weekly thread! :lmao: I hope all my fellow WISHers are doing well! Hugs to all! :grouphug:

I'm going to try to get caught up with everyone, I'm not making any promises, but I'll do my best. :thumbsup2

First things first, favorite ice cream flavor: ice cream is my favorite food and I pretty love any flavor, but I have to say my overall favorite flavor is cookies 'n cream. Now if we are talking particular brands, that's a horse of a different color, Ben and Jerry's is either Chubby Hubby, NY Super Fudge Chunk, or Everything But the Kitchen Sink. Cold Stone Creamery is Birthday Cake Remix, and Grater's ice cream, which is a Cincinnati thing, my favorite is Coconut Chocolate Chunk. Basically the more mix-in's the better!!

Judy--Are you sure you aren't faking an injury just to get to see Dr. Hunka Hunka Burning Love? Next you'll be passing out, hoping for a cute medic. ;) Seriously, I hope you get some answers and :wizard: for your knee!

Stephanie--I don't know how different the weather is in northern OH from southern OH, but it's hot here too. We've been in the 90's all week, they say a cool front is coming through tonight and tomorrow it's supposed to only get up to 80. I hope they are right! Have fun at Zumba tonight! I need to find out how young the babysitting goes at my gym, I am anxious to start doing some real workouts after my post partum doctor visit.

Angie--I am so, so, so proud of you for holding yourself back in your runs and that you are able to stay healthy. It's funny, there have been many times I have heard the Wisher's voices in my head while running. Mostly it's Carrie telling me not to be stupid! :thumbsup2

Debra--Short and slow are my middle names. Can I count on you to have ice cream at the water stop during the half marathon? I bet I would PR for sure then!

Leana--YAY for your awesome 21 miler over the weekend! That is awesome! And yay for the bike shop hooking you up with a bike tube. I have found that people who own running stores or biking stores are some of the nicest people in the world. I always say when I "retire" that I want to work at a running store! :wizard: for your tri this weekend!

Kira--Awesome job on your 7 miler! I am very jealous that I will never hit a new distance again, but after taking 6 months off from running, it's almost like I'm starting over again. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

David and Jennifer--I know you guys aren't new, but you are new since I've been back (I had a baby 2 weeks ago, so I've been in and out the past few months), so I'll say :welcome: anyway. I look forward to training with you guys over the next few months. :)

Michelle--:wizard: for your knee! I really hope it's nothing! Take a few days off and give it a good rest.

Howard--Speaking of rest....:wizard: :wizard: for your hip flexors. You can't really find a happy medium, can you??? ;)

Cam--I am really jealous of your PT, I would love to have one. And it sounds like you have a really good one. It sounds like training is going really good for you, keep on keeping on! Oh, and you'll be happy to hear this, I can get back into my heels again and wear them pain-free!!!

Tracey--You are already packing for DL?? That's awesome! :thumbsup2 Oh, and as a mom to a very much loved fur baby, thanks for taking of the dog yesterday!

Cecilia--What color did you paint your MBR? I don't have the patience for painting and leave it all to Stephen. That's why we have husbands, right? ;)

Jen--

My World --I am loving, loving, loving being a mom and I'm dreading going back to work. Thankfully I have 9.5 weeks until that day and honestly it won't be that bad as I am quitting my job at the beginning of year so I can be a stay-at-home mom to Carter. My days consist of feeding, changing diapers, washing bottles, cleaning up spit up and lots of laundry, but I am not complaining at all!! Today Carter and I got out for a 2 mile walk, my pace was ridiculously slow, but I'm okay what that for 3 reasons: 1. I haven't really worked out in months and I know it's going to take a while for everything to come back. 2. I was pushing Carter's extremely heavy stroller/car seat combo (like 50lbs heavy), so I'm getting weight lifting and cardio in at the same time. :thumbsup2 3. I just gave birth 2.5 weeks ago, I think it's okay it be a little slow! I know I have an uphill battle getting back into running shape, but we'll take it one day at a time and I'm not anticipating a PR in January. :lmao:

I know I missed people and I'm sorry, I did my best! I think I'm going to hop in the shower while Carter is sleeping. I've noticed I get in the shower later and later every day. As long as I get cleaned up before Stephen gets home from work, I'll consider it a victory!!! :upsidedow

Krista

Hi Shan & Krista, nice to see you back! Just take it slowly. That's slllllllloooooooooooowwwwwwwwlllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyy.

I saw this article, must have been written for the WISH TEAM.

COOL OFF WITH A GUILT-FREE TREATIt's hot out there, all right. Luckily, you have the AC cranked at home, and your office is so pumped with arctic air that you dress for work like you would for the ski slopes.

But how can you cool down from the inside out when you're in the heat, building sand castles with the kids at the beach or grilling burgers for 20 of your closest friends in the backyard?

Eat something cold, of course. There are plenty of summer coolers that will keep you refreshed without causing belly bloat.

Try a frosty from Wendy's rather than a shake. On the boardwalk, have a heart-healing coconut shaved ice instead of a banana split. Or try frozen yogurt with fresh fruit, like fiber-full papaya, if you can get it.

Staying active will help keep your weight in balance if you do indulge on the sweet, cold stuff. There are plenty of activities perfect for the summer: Boost metabolism and burn calories by going for a swim, hit the trails on a bike, or woo her with a hike. If you're looking for something more low-key, beat stress with some hot yoga on the beach.

You'll sweat out that ice cream in no time.

Hey gang -

I just wanted to check in with the reliable team WISH members who I've seen the past couple of years on the CDC course in Chicago! (It's Sallie here, your friendly 3:30 Pacer).

Is there anyone who will be walking or running with me in Chicago this weekend? I'll be at the 3:30 pace, and looking out...

A couple of things to note - the course has changed a bit from last year, but I recently did a 10 miler on almost the same route and it was really nice. Bring your hats and sunscreen!

Water and Gatorade stations are every 2 miles, and I just confirmed that Porta potties will be also every 2 miles (4 per station). If you're in need of an early pit stop, usually (though I can't guarantee it) the ones at McCormick Place (the underground at about Mile 1.5 in the Convention Center) are also usually open...

The big change this year is that we will not be sharing the path with Northbound runners when we're heading Southbound - it's wide open for us!!

Pat - if you're out there and going to be there, stop by and say hi! And for anyone else who is new, please introduce yourself when we meet up before the race - we spend a lot of time together, and I like it to be fun time :)

Best of luck to all of you racing this weekend, and thanks for letting me invade your board :)

Sal

Sal--not going to be a CDC'er but thanks for checking in with us! Means a lot!

Krista--being a SAHM was the best decision I ever made! I loved all those moments with my kids. However, I do have a bit of ADD, so we're rarely actually at home. Oh, and our gym daycare starts with 6 week olds. I love the little babies.

Thanks for all the kudos for my little speedwork-out this week. But really, it wasn't easy for me--I don't run that fast for very long for a reason. I'm just hoping to get a bit faster than I am now. Gotta train those muscles somehow

Tonight was a fun night of Zumba-ing. Tomorrow I've got to get to the gym early b/c I've got to meet up with my dad before we leave town after lunch.

just back for my traditional 5k practice run. it's on the hilly marked course in my neighborhood. i did it in 26:45, which is a good sign for tomorrow night. i'm still trying to figure out the logistics of the evening race.

no dole whips here, but i'm heading out to wendy's for a frosty later.

Bill: The weather will definately NOT be like this in January!!!

Lisa: Sorry about the wet and soggy weather, I'll try to send some South Florida sun up your way.

Angie: Thank goodness your taking it slow. 4 miles pain free is better than sliced bread at this point.

Cam: Crunches and pushups everyday??? UGH! Good for you keeping at it!!

Liz: First Half is right around the corner, keep the spirits high!!:cool1:

Michelle: Ooooooooooo, that doesn't sound good - please take care of your knee and listen to your body. I don't want to see you at DL 1/2 gimping around. Hope your trip goes smoothly. I hope I could float to CA.

Shan: Yeh!! You got the thumbs up :thumbsup2 to start running again!! SOunds like you are well on your way to finish the WDW Half and already at a pace better than the 16min mile.

Krista: Glad the "stay at home mom" is sounding real foo to you. I'm not really packing just got the stuff out to air dry a bit.

Jeff: ALOHA from your Haole friend in Florida!! Loving the Dole Whip videos.

AFM: I did 4 miles at Mount Trashmore tonight. Def sporting the pinky pistols tonght. Nice breeze though, so not too bad. I have a 4miles on tap for tomorrow and then a 13 miler for Sinday.

Cam: Crunches and pushups everyday???

Racey Tracy,

What Cam didn't explain was, it's Nestle's Crunch, and Flintstone Pushup pops. :lmao:

Quick lesson, you don't want to use the reference of being a "haole". It's not how I would refer to you in a "local" sense. I would call you my friend, and not my "haole friend." The word could be misconstrued as racial if used the wrong way. Better to say "Malihini" which means - a newcomer to Hawaii.

If you are born here, or move here and embrace the lifestyle over many many years, then you are "kamaaina."

I must say, you have a great Aloha spirit to you. All geared up for your stay at the Polynesian, IN JANUARY. LOL. I ate at the Ohana restaurant. Mmm, it's not quite the Hawaiian food that I'm accustomed to. Someday you need to be brave enough to fly out to the islands of Hawaii, and experience it firsthand. Who knows, once you get here, you may never leave.

Michelle,
take care of that knee. I don't want to have to push you around in a wheelchair. Wait, you would get us to the front of the line on rides. Hmmmm.

Training today for me. Our usual meeting place has been overtaken for the Honolulu Festival, which is a giant carnival at Ala Moana Beach Park. So we met at a different park nearby.

Guru Les forced me to run 8.76 miles, at 8:50 per mile average. The early miles were under this pace, and the last two were over, way over. LOL.

I wasn't feeling it today, but I got it done. Our return route was through the heart of Waikiki on Kalakaua Avenue. We were dodging tourists left and right, which breaks up the monotony of running in a straight line.

Aloha to everyone on the WISH team. Hope your training is going as planned. Get your rest, hydrate, fuel, and plan according to how your body is telling you to train. Listen to your body!

Good morning WISH team! It sounds like everyone is out there working hard, or getting frosties or ice cream or something like that!

Krista: I am glad you are fully enjoying your time with Carter. It goes by so fast. My DD is going into 8th grade this year. Next year is HS and then she is gone. Only 5 more summers with my first born. How sad... Kudos for you with the SAHM thing too. I admire all you SAHMoms. I work at home, does that count? :confused3

Shan: So glad to hear you are back working out again. It has surely been a long road for you. I hope you got the desired results. I was thinking of you yesterday when I was flipping through the channels and they showed Courtney Love in a bikini. Bob Harper was interviewed and he said she has 2 choices, cover it up or cut it off. Hence my thinking of you!!! I hope you are truly on the mend now, we have missed you around here.

Angie: You are doing great holding back. I know sometimes it is hard but keep your eye on the prize or the big picture and it will all be okay. Remember, this is all for making you better in the end.

Stephanie: Great job on your speed work. I dislike speed work also. Necessary evil I tell myself. I feel the same about hill work.

Everyone else: I hope your day is sparkling and full of goodness!!

As for me, I did get outside yesterday for my run. It was 58 degrees and still sprinkling but a little rain never hurt anyone. I donned my long running pants, tech vest, and waterproof jacket and off I went. Actually my DH left me home alone to run to my SIL house 4 miles away and I really had no other choice...well I could have missed dinner...:rolleyes1 I was on for 2 easy miles and 2 moderate miles. The first 2 were at a 10:20 mpm pace and the second 2 were at a 9:33 mpm pace. I seem to be getting more comfortable in the 9:30 to 9:45 range with distance. At 4 miles I really feel like I could go on forever. Anyone else get that feeling. My SIL says it comes at 2 miles for her, lucky dog. :sad2: I also got to the NB sale. Original sales cost over $230, final sales were a savings of $101 and change. So worth standing in line for 20 minutes to check out and digging through bins. The sales get better as the week goes on so I will be headed back mid-week and then the last day too. :upsidedow Today is 5 with speed intervals at a 5K pace. It is pouring right now and hopefully clears by run time...otherwise I am in the gym.

Have a great day everyone!!! :flower3:

Racey Tracy,

OK I will defiantely not do that again. I just that it meant foreigner to Hawaii. Now I know better. Thanks for the correction!!

Aloha!

Sallie!! Oh my gosh!! Yes DH Jim and I are doing Chicago again. I was wondering if you were going to be back as the 3:30 pacer. Awesome. Fellow WISHers Sallie is the 3:30 pacer extraordinare at the CDC and the last two years DH and I have had a blast walking most of the course with her. She is fabulous! It is so cool to see you here! There will be a few other WISHers joining us on Sunday. Doesn't the weather forecast look great for Chicago in August? I am really excited, see ya real soon!!:woohoo: :woohoo:

Hi Sallie! I'll be at CDC in that pace group. Looking forward to meeting you. The weather forecast is so awesome for Aug in Chicago!

Krista - so glad you're loving it! Do enjoy as the time goes quickly.

Shan - Yay on being cleared to get back to running.

Tracy - hope your LW goes well this weekend and the temps stay a little cooler at least until you're done.

Lisa - ugh on the constant rain. Hope it clears up for your run this eve.

Jeff - mmmm, Dole Whips.... 49 days until I can get one. Not that I'm counting.

Maura - have a great time next week!

Angie - just take it slow and steady and stay pain free!

Big HELLO to everyone!!

Ok, a bit nervous here. I've made a check list for Sunday so I don't forget anything which is completely possible at that hour of the morning. Have to pick up Einstein bagels tomorrow as that's what I've been eating before my long runs and like the Penguin says "Nothing new on race day". So have to have my 1/2 banana and 1/2 bagel with sunflower seed butter and coffee. Taking my camera so hoping to have pics to go with RR.
