Wk of Aug 3 - WISH Walking/Running Club

ugh. mexican food, heat, and humidity do not make for a good run. i got two miles in around 16 minutes before my stomach was just too sick to keep going. it was still 85 and humid at 8 pm. hope everyone else is having better luck.

Has anyone else dealt with one of these before?

:grouphug:

Howard

Howard,

Yes, been there, done that. Lots of stretching after your runs, and especially on off days.

Either roll on a foam roller, or a tennis ball if you can handle it. If you're really able to tolerate the pain, then a piece of PVC pipe.

Massages really help if you can afford them.

Get well, and don't push it any more. You want to be healthy for your upcoming races.

I got in my 8 miles with Guru Les. The first 6 were about a 8:40 minute pace. The last two I had to cool my jets. Average for all 8 was exactly 9 minutes on the button. No aches or pains in the arch, so that was a plus.

Yea, I just got emailed that the Spirit of the Marathon movie is finally coming to Honolulu for 3 nights in September. Will definitely be seeing that! I guess sending them about 6 emails finally got them to screen it out here.

Aloha Jeff: I was talking with DOOD about your month of 16 milers, 18 milers, etc. How did you come up with that strategy, if you don't mind me asking? Centered around races you want to do? (Excellent pace, btw.)

Deb, so did you hear if you have your job lined up yet? Crossing my fingers your no longer in Limbo, although I bet you're a closet Limbo Champion in your spare time, and just won't admit it to the team. :lmao:

Before reading on, I have to preface this with "I'm a running NUT." Just so you all know, while shaking your heads in unison. I know your all thinking, this guy is CRAZY!!!

My training last year was geared for doing the Goofy '08. Having trained for just the Honolulu in 2006, I had to focus on Honolulu 2007 marathon being just a long training run with 60,000 or so friends.

That being said, I looked at the Honolulu Marathon My First Marathon booklet written by Dr. Jack Scaff. It was written in the 70's, and everything in it is still perfect advice for training today.

In March for the beginners in the clinic, they start off with 4 miles. The advanced intermediates were already running, so we started with 8 miles. Each month you add 2 more miles to the Sunday run.

I also run 8 miles every Tuesday and Thursday after work.

Last year in August, I added a 3 mile jog on Saturday's, and a hour on the stationary bike on Wednesday's.

The doc's booklet maxes out at 18 miles for the longest run in November, and then you taper off until December for the marathon, which is either the first or second weekend of December, depending on the year.

Knowing I was going to do 39.3 over two days, I modified the long run to include a 22 miler in November before Honolulu. Once I did that, I tapered going into Honolulu.

We totally took our time doing Honolulu, in 5:50 due to the heavy rain.

After Honolulu, I took 5 days off, and then got back at it. It was 5 weeks between Honolulu and the Goofy.

During the year, I did a couple of 5K's, a few 10K's, a pair of half's, and a 30K race. I concentrated on doing hill work at least once a week last year, and some speed intervals. This year I've been doing mostly tempo work on flat terrain.

Speed work and hill work, although tough, makes a huge difference in your results.

My racing partner Marcia (Mushu) took a different route, since she had done the 2007 Goofy. She trained less miles, and at a slower pace than me. I "rubber banded" her through the Goofy. I would run ahead of her, then she would kick it up a notch to catch up to me. Once she did, we would talk and see how we were both doing. Then, I would run ahead again. We did this both days.

This year, I'm just trying to improve on my time. My 2006 Honolulu was my fastest at 5:20. At the rate I'm going, maybe a 4:45 is possible. Since I improved my half time from 2:20 to 1:59, I think I've improved this year.

Next year in July I plan to do the Tin Man Triathlon, so I'll have to start road biking and swimming. Two of my wife's friends and I challenged each other for next year.

Since I know I'm going Goofy again in 2010, then next year I'll work on my speed.

That's the way I get it done. Having Guru Les helping me is a plus, even though he tortures me on the Tuesday & Thursday runs :scared1:. He's 24 years older than me, and I can't match his pace of 8:30 or under.

Please consult your psychiatrist before even thinking about attempting to train the way I do. As Panda Dave would say, I belong in the "You ain't right club" (YARC). :lmao::rotfl::laughing::eek::rotfl2:

GOOD MORNING TEAM!!!

Sorry I have not been checking in and I'm sorry I don't have time to catch up with everyone but I have to share most exciting news with my TEAM!!!

Two weeks of consistent (short and sweet but that's ok) running, and even after 5 on Monday no PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! This honestly the most hopeful that I have been that my body will actually let me do this marathon after all.

So we are into week 1 of our training plan and I have 4 on tap for tonight.

Last night did Body Flow, they just did their new release and it is perfect for what I am trying to do with the Yoga, stretching and lots of the Pilates, core.

Check in tonight after my run.

Angie Glad to hear you're pain free. Good luck on the training.

Tracy So I did an hour spin class today and didn't have pinky pistols, but sweat was flying off various other body parts. Now I know how you must feel!

Time to get back to work and go order food for 25 for a cultural training class tomorrow. (China)

Maura

Quick drive by today - I have to go to work -DARN!

Howard - be careful. I pulled a quad while training for my 1st Goofy. It took forever to heal so I could run. I could walk fine, but running was painful.

Pat- Seattle is very tempting. Only problem is that's my busiest time of year at work. I'll have to check on that.

Angie - glad to hear you're running pain free! :goodvibes

Finally got back to training. I had a lousy headache that lasted from Friday night to Monday night. Not the way to spend a weekend. Last night went to the pool and swam about 1/2 mile. Total time was 27:16. I broke it up into roughly 2 1/4 mile sets. 1st set was 13:46. 2nd set was 13:30. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt like I pushed a lot harder in the 2nd set and only took off 16 seconds. I was huffin and puffin when I finished that
2nd set. Oh well, it was a faster time than before, so that's a good thing.

Terri

I forgot:

Howard:  PLEASSSSSSSSSe take care of yourself. I know you will but I am just speaking as the poster child for not knowing when to quit :rotfl:

Teri - SOrry that you were a little disappointed, but glad that you are through the headache adn really glad you are trianing!

ANgie - WOo hoo!!!! I am so happy for you and proud of you for not pushing too hard!

Howard - DId someone mention yesterday that you might be over doing it? ;) Glad you listened to your body. I've had that. RICE helped.

Jeff - Yay for Spirit of the Marathon coming your way! It's great!

Tracy - Yay for resuing the dog. You're right. DOgs need collars.

I did 60 min of Yoga last night at home. It's borign listening to a cd, but it's a huge step for me to get home and actually do it.

Angie: Way to go I am glad you are running pain free again.

Howard: Sorry to hear about the hip flexor. I think that is what I injured in 2005. I ran a 17 mile long run the day after a hilly 10K race. My legs were real sore and I ran it anyways. Looks like you caught it early. Just make sure it is healed up before starting back. I would keep walking, that should help. I wouldn't ride the bike, that might make it worse. When you start back go real slow. If you think you are changing your stride to compensate for the injury stop immediately. Otherwise you will injure something else. Drop any speedwork. The main goal is getting to the starting line healthy.

Hal Higdon's plans are great. I used the Intermediate 2 plan for my first marathon in 2004. I like that he doesn't have you do speedwork while you are increasing mileage.

I think the purpose of the Sat/Sun runs is to run the Saturday at a faster pace. I think he recommends to run them at goal marathon pace. The next day is the long run. You should be tired from the Saturday run. It is very important to run the Sunday long run much slower the the Saturday run. The last third of the run you can pick it up if you are feeling good.

I will keep my fingers crossed and hope you bounce back quickly.

David

How can it be Wednesday and I haven't posted here yet???? :confused3

I see I missed some very important birthdays, so a belated happy birthday to Bill and Steve. :cake: I did not miss my Cam's though. :goodvibes

Also, to answer a very important question..... Chunky Monkey.

I will post separately about my shoe buying debacle. It's worthy of it's own post, I am sure. :headache:

However....my torn meniscus has reared it's ugly head again and I have to make s decision. :guilty:

The good news is: 1) I get to see Dr Hunka Hunka Burning Love again. :cloud9: 2) I have enough time to get it fixed and recover before I start MFM training.

The bad news is: I don't wanna do it. :scared:

Ugh. Middle age stinks.

Hi everyone!

Today I discovered that painting the interior walls of my house makes my runs much harder. My quads were not happy about running after spending two days on ladders painting the MBR. It was a tough tough run.

(Yes, we are finally getting around to painting the walls of our house a year after moving in. I am no longer enjoying the beige that the builder supplied when we first moved in. remind me WHY I didn't have him paint it then? oh yeah, I couldn't make any more decisions...)

Angie - Yahoo! Glad to hear you are pain free!

Howard - There is this tiny little part of me is glad to hear that you are afterall human but seriously, RICE and get better quickly. The I stands for ice - ahem.

Take care everyone!
Cecilia

Stephanie: Your speed workout leaves me breathless and far behind you. Great job on doing it for 3 miles. You're definitely going to get faster with those kinds of runs. I'll just have to remember to wave at you as you fly by. Maybe I'll be waving a waffle cone, just to get your attention. (Bet you that would slow you down! )

Carrie: I'm noticing a certain theme in your ice cream--you love those cacao nibs, don't you? Me too! :goodvibes Great job breaking up your bike ride with dinner--that way you earn a good meal, and work it off afterwards, too!

Kira: Fresh peach ice cream....mmmmm. :cloud9: A seasonal yummy. I think I'll be on the lookout for that one. August is a great time to indulge in that one, especially after a LR. (See, I make it sound as if we all deserve an ice-cream treat, don't I? Because we do!)

Aloha Jeff:
I will eat it in cone, I will eat it in a cup,
Ice cream, Ice cream, I will eat you up.
Another one of your talents--writer! Of course, you've anthropomorphized ice cream in a disturbing way, but that's okay. It's when the ice cream starts talking back to you that I'll begin to worry...:rolleyes1

Great advice on Howard's hip flexor issue, btw. Question: What are people in my family going to think when I start traveling with a foam roller (training for marathon will happen over the holidays) and massaging myself? :confused3 :rotfl2:

I bet you're a closet Limbo Champion in your spare time, and just won't admit it to the team.
Ummm, yeah. I'm flexible that way. ;) No definitive news yet, so I'm going to practice my limbo moves in private.

Thank you for the story on your training runs and your progress. You've made such progress, and I like hearing about others' long-term plans, especially in terms of the Goofy. (DOOD and I are in for 2010, too.) I have no doubts that you have PRs in your future.

Racey Tracy: Getting a new bike for hitting a goal is a great idea! Your DL trip keeps sounding better and better (except for that flying thing). You're going to love it. When I travel to DL, I say I like WDW better....when I travel to WDW, I say I like DL better. Just never satisfied, I guess. (Then again, it keeps me going back to both, so maybe I'm smarter than I look.) You're another chocolate in your ice cream fan, hmm? Maybe it's the texture, too?

RE: the dog story. You are my hero. A lot of people wouldn't have interrupted their training, or would have said they didn't have the time, or would have figured someone else would assume responsibility. You're a great person! :worship:

Howard: I was just wondering about the back-to-back runs for the Goofy, but it looks like this one is unrelated. It could be that what I think of as LRs at this point (6 miles) just isn't for your abilities. I do think the longer distances will work well for you in recovering quickly between your races. Could be wrong, but it seems to me like it would provide you with a strong base for your PRs. Btw, I'm sorry about your hip flexor strain (thank you for the info), and am glad you're playing it safe and conservative with your recovery. Also bodes well for your races, I think. Btw, does Cam, among others, get to say "I told you so" on the overdoing it? (Dang, Carrie and I think alike!)

Kathy: In case you read the weekly thread...so what is the deal with cowbells? :confused3

David: Thanks for explaining the rationale behind the Higdon plan and/or back-to-back long runs. It helps those of us (read: me) understand training plans that we've not been exposed to. You sound very experienced. I'm a Bingham/MfM girl right now, but I've been known to be fickle in my affections.

Jennifer: It sounds like your celebrations--both birthday and Reeback shopping--went well! I assume you can remember the flurry of activity associated with both? :rotfl2: Good luck with Friday's race. Do you have a goal for this night race?

Just read about the heat and humidity, the Mexican food, and the run. Ugh, that must have been rough. I hope you're recovering without incident.

Leana: Oooo, bad news about the tire. I suppose the upside is that this occurred before your tri, so you can make sure everything is 100% for the event. (Good luck with it, btw!) You have such eclectic taste in ice cream. I like a Mexican chocolate with chilies, so #3 sounds familiar. I've never heard of Tiger's Tail. I simply must take a tour of Canadian ice-cream stores.

Lisa: Love local dairies and Moose Tracks. Hard to beat a good sorbet in really hot weather though. I find them more refreshing than ice cream for some reason? Very nice pace for your post-race run--you're definitely speedier--right up until the downpour. I hope you don't end up on the TM, for your sake.
My theory is that I can put on more layers but can only take off so many before someone calls the police!!!!
Um, some of us might applaud, stomp our feet, and whistle. :rotfl:

Cam: Yay for you and PT Jeff adjusting your workout. I'm glad he's neither afraid to push you or to pull back when necessary. Oh, and kudos for you too, as I'm sure you have something to do with the intensity of your WOs. :rolleyes1 It sounds like you're finding your RW pace for training. I loved your phrase:
...the longer walking periods are really impacting on my overall pace.
You rock, woman! When you first started, did you ever think you'd write something like that? Your progress is amazing! :worship:

Stacie: I guess I didn't realize this was your first time attempting laps. Congratulations--you're trying new stuff and challenging yourself. I admire that.

Angie: Yay for the no pain. Congratulations on doing short and sweet runs the last couple of weeks, and then entering your January training with such a strong start. You're in such a good place now with your running and XT. I'm excited for you, almost as excited as you are for yourself!

Maura: Wow, from spinning class to cultural training class. That's a whole other level of XT. :lmao: How are you doing with running? Or are you still nursing injuries?

Terri: Your weekend sounds like it was really rough--a headache knocks me out worse than other things, for some reasons. Congratulations on your 2 1/2 mile swims. It seems like 16 seconds is a lot faster in terms of swimming. (I honestly don't know, though.) Yay for doing it and doing it faster, regardless. :goodvibes

Judy, Judy, Judy: We've missed you! (I bet you get tired of the "Judy, Judy, Judy" bit, huh? Does it help if I tell you Cary Grant never actually said that?) Chunky Monkey is a sentimental fave of mine, back in the days when I was figuring out that my primary rival for DOOD's affections was both Ben and Jerry. He's the real ice-cream fiend in the family, you know.

Ouch on the torn meniscus--I didn't realize you had a recurrent injury, and have missed the story about Dr. Hunka Hunka Burning Love. I assume you've already made your appointment, even if you don't want to, because you're committed to January. Say yes, please! :goodvibes

Cecilia: Yay for getting in your run anyway, sore quads and all. I'll bet your newly repainted MBR looks great, too! What color did you go with--I'm assuming it's not a variation on the beige theme. :rotfl:

As for me: I did a short and slow run today (no comments from the peanut gallery about how they're all short and slow for me ) of 3.5 miles.

In response to my fave flavor of ice cream, Jeff and I think alike. I think of ice cream as I do my children (if I had any, that is): I love them all the same. Except for maybe anything with marshmallows or gummies. :scared: They're the black sheep of my much beloved ice-cream family. I will say, though, that when I was a child I absolutely loved Blue Moon, mainly because it turned my tongue blue. I think food should taste good and be entertaining whenever possible, don't you?

Hi everyone! I feel like a slug. I did nothing today. Ugh. I am resting my right thigh as ordered by so many nice and caring people around the WISH boards.

The pain I felt when running (or attempting to) is gone. I have a lingering uncomfortable area in what feels like the back of my leg in the hamstring area. I am a bit confused by it all. I used "The Stick" on the back and front of my leg for a while tonight and felt no great relief or benefit. There was no pain or pressure caused due to the use of "The Stick" so I think I am getting better. I haven't iced it because it doesn't hurt, it isn't swollen or tender. I guess I am doing the RE and not the entire RICE like so many smart people advocate.

I am going to play it very cautious and not do anything beyond walking tomorrow. I want to get some miles in just leisurely strolling around where I usually walk. A mile is a mile in my book. Plus I won't feel as if I am doing "nothing".

I won't plan on trying to run/jog on it (unless it feels 100%) until the weekend. It is supposed to cool down over the weekend and that might be a good time to get out. I am hoping this slightly wierd feeling goes away in my leg and I will be back to my old (and wiser) self.

I will be looking into proper stretching techniques for the thigh/legs prior to a run so I can look to avoid this in the future. Looking back I think I know what may have caused it. The stationary bike I used at the YMCA had a pedal that was rubbing and slowing down the progress I was making. It created drag that I had to push extra hard to overcome. I think that stressed it a bit and then the run the next morning "twanged" it.

Thanks again for the advice everyone!

Oh yes... Please advise Cam of the medicinal benefits of massage and what it could mean to my dabilitating injury. ;)

:grouphug:

Howard

Today was my off day so I had plenty of time to recover from last night's food/heat incident. I was feeling fine when I woke up this morning but my stomach was spasming until I went to bed at 10.

Judy, Is the russian coffee ice cream better than the Cofee Coffee bzz bzz bzz?

Tracy, I'm looking at going to Cali next August, so I'll be watching for you and all the DL 1/2ers reports!

Debra, Drinking and shopping is always a disaster. Luckily the shopping preceded the drinking.
My goal for the race this week is to be between 26:00 and 26:30. (my perfect day/dream goal is something in the low 25s and I'll be happy as long as I'm in at least the 28s). I ran my hilly practice course right at 27 on Monday night and the course on friday (which we drove around tonight) is basically flat. My mom is doing the 1 mile walk (her first event), which I'm really proud of her for. I'm trying to convince her that she could walk a 5k but there aren't a lot of walkers in our area and she says she'd be embarassed.

Jennifer

Hey team! I took the wheel in to the bike shop today to have them show me how to change a flat. He looked at how my tube busted and figured it was probably a faulty tube so he gave me a new one for free! I then took an embarrassingly long time trying to get the rear wheel back on the bike when I got home... But yes, at least the flat happened at home and not on a ride or the race!

Thanks for the good wishes for my first tri on Sunday. I am super excited. I'm pretty sure that next year I'll look at running one or two halfs, but for the most part I'm going to be concentrating on tris instead. Me thinks I really like this whole multi-sport thing.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to swim some laps but then I'm playing hookie from boot camp to go see Cirque du Soleil's Corteo!! I'm so sore from last night's boot camp that I'm probably just fine with that night off...

... to go see Cirque du Soleil's Corteo!!

Pretty cool show, we saw it two years ago in San Francisco. It took a few minutes to realize what the theme was.

We're going to see Saltimbanco here in Honolulu in October. We got to get to Las Vegas to see all their shows.

By far my favorite is La Nouba at the World!

Hey, forgot to mention the Hawaii Convention Center is hosting the World Brewing Congress Convention. I tried to volunteer for tasting, but they wouldn't let me in.

Howard - Sorry to hear about your injury. I hope that it does heal quickly and you are back to your normal training again.

Judy - Good luck with the appointment. I hope you don't swoon too much in the doctors presence.

Cam - Per Howards request, massaging is great for injuries. However you can remind him it goes both ways when your PT gives you a hard workout or you are just tired from all the activities you have going on. If you are using the stick, it is also a good time to remind him not to train too hard and injure himself. Just make sure he isn't injured from the gentle prodding of the Stick. :rolleyes1

Debra - Good job on the run. Why am I not suprised you liked something that would turn your tounge blue.

Tracy - Great job helping the dog. We had one come up in our yard last saturday. He did have a tag and the owner was a little suprised at the call early in the morning to come pick him up.

Jeff - Love the pictures although Wonka vision would be nice here so we could share in the tasty treats.

Angie - Congrats for being pain free. I hope this trend continues for a long time now. Glad to hear the new job is going well. It is always nice when a gamble actually pays off.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Lynnda and the kids baked and decorated a nice cake and it is almost gone at this point. It is getting hotter and the humidity is still high so winter can come at any time now. I just keep hoping that it won't be this bad in January.

Bill

Angie, so happy for you running with no pain. I hope this continues for you!!

Everyone else: Hi!!!

I guess I should say hi from wet, soggy, cold, damp and yucky Maine. We are in a 4 day run of rain which will continue through the weekend. TM for me obviously!!

I hope everyone has a great day!!

GOOD MORNING TEAM!!!

I still do not have time to catch up individually and I feel really bad but you guys have been so supportive so I want to stay accountable here through my training.
You don't understand how excited I am to be in our first week of training and I can actually do what I need to do.:yay:

Did my 4 last night and once again you guys would be so proud of me, it took every ounce of will power to not up the speed on the treadmill but I kept telling my self I have a long way to go and it is finally better, I could hear Debra telling me "NO"!!! :upsidedow Just kidding

I succesfully finished my 4 miles, pain free.:dance3:

Tonight is spin and flow.

Have a good day everyone.

P.S. For Friday's run I will have to chant to my self, "I will catch Stephanie again some day ( thank GOD for potty breaks), just not yet!!!!":rotfl:

Angie--Love ya! Good thing we're running in different races in January! No catching up necessary, except maybe over a drink!

Debra--and yes, I would slow down for a waffle cone. Actually, I'd probably slow down for any food or drink. I'm not very partial.

Well, let's see; since the last time I posted I've done little training. Spent 30 min on bike trainer on Tuesday = 7.25 miles. And then my husband went and lost his mind yesterday and decided we should leave town on Friday to visit his parents. Not a big deal if they lived close, but we're headed to NE Ohio. Hey, at least the weather will be cooler!

Tonight is Zumba and maybe a little something else if I feel adventurous.
