Wk of Aug 13--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

My training for the weekend consisted of walking 3 miles with my mother and Lynne. We kept asking her how far she wanted to walk as she has had both knees replaced and we didn't want her to be in pain. She kept saying she was fine so I decided to turn around at the 1.5 mile marker. We accomplished the walk in about an hour.

Sunday, I went to Beaver Lake Nature Center with Lynne. While she was running , I walked 7.5 miles at a 16.13 pace. If I want to get the medal at the Army Ten Miler, I need to maintain a 15 min pace. I have 7 more Sat LW to get my time faster.

I am going to sign up to walk the full in January. I am not sure I will actually be able to do the race but I am going to train as much as possible. I am having surgery on my right shoulder (again) on Oct 12 to repair a full thickness rotator cuff tear. It is the same shoulder I had the bicep tendon rapaired on last August. I should be in good shape if I can start walking again soon after surgery. I will listen to the surgeon as this will be my 3 surgery on that shoulder and I want it to heal properly. Even if I don't race, i will be there to cheer everyone on.

Carrie - great pace on you run

Pat - congrats on the CDC. The medal looks great.

Mel - great time on you run.

Sunny - get better soon so you can join us in Jan.

Lily - glad you are able to come in January again.

Terri - great training run.

Sonya - great time on your half.

Cam - great job fitting training into your busy schedule. You will do great on the DL half and have a head start on the marathon training.

Happy training everyone.

Sugaswim--Yay! We have another football fan!!  I have to become a Redskins fan this year for Antwan Randle El, I'm really going to miss him this year.

oh yes, i looooove football. i used to hate it, but i'm so into it now. mostly because in high school all anyone cared about was football. never gave any thought to the swim team (i swam for 14 years of my life... from the time i was 8 all the way through college). we never got any recognition. well, i managed to help get some, since i was kind of good... i got into it during college. my school didn't have a football team and i grew up in a skins house (helps i'm right outside of dc...). so naturally that is my team. i'm really bitter about portis *sigh*

anyways evening all! i just finished my 5 miles for the day. did it in about 43min. my watch with the stopwatch function broke while i was taking scuba class about a month ago so i kind of have to gestimate right now till i get a new one. so i look at when i started and when i stopped :rotfl:
of course i think it's good for me to not be paying too much attention to time. i get upset if i'm slower than the day before. this way i just go based purely on feel. i think it will help me.

Today was a treadmill day, so was hard to stick with it: 13:36 / 13:03 / 13:29 Glad I got it in though.

I keep my running schedule in Excel so that I have top line as plan & 2nd line as actual. Then I can also do a quick calc to be sure my actual doesn't increase more than 10-11% each week. ( :rotfl2: like more is even a remote possibility)

Dave: good job putting in the steps. Listen to the legs.

Cecilia: “slow runner @ 10:20”…girl you crack me up. That pace only happens in my dreams so if you think track work would help, count me in.

Carrie: What a jack rabbit. The turtle-crew will keep cheering you on from the back of the pack.

Pat: Awesome medal. Glad was nice event for you. :wizard: PD for the blisters.

Kathy: with my partially torn bicep, I started having sympathy pains when I read about your shoulder.

Everyone have a great one….keep moving forward.

It was a late LR tonight for the DW and I... All our furniture and stuff finally arrived from her previous base so we spent most of the day unpacking... Finally headed down to Navarre Beach around 9:30pm :confused3

For her it was a 4 miler, which is actually the furthest she's run basically ever that she can remember, and she didn't even walk once! She's well on her way to completing a 10k sometime next month, potentially Labor Day. For me it was a loooong 7 miler, which ended up taking 72 min. Was hoping for around 65, but I'm going to blame being sick all week and having some mediocre runs, including only a 53 min long run last week, so it was still a big jump time wise and virtually pain free. Think I'm actually still a week ahead of schedule for the Dland half plan, which is good because I'd like to taper a bit at the end whereas the schedule has me running a 10 miler (the longest LR of the plan) just 1 week from race day.

Onward and forward! Now I just have to figure out how early I'll have to leave from my parents house about 25 min west of Dland in order to get to the start line at a reasonable time...

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post here -- Sorry I'm really behind :guilty:

Last week, I attended a meeting for Teams in Training and decided to give that a try, although it is a lot of money that you have to raise but I will give it a try.

Last night I did some threadmill work - 1 mile walking briskly (4.0 pace), 4 miles (5.0).

Oh and I decided that the best thing for me.....was to quick that job at Macy's - I worked this past Saturday night and what a nightmare  I was the only associate on in the better sportswear department and it was super busy --- I spent most of the night glued to my register.

Well, I will do my best to catch up with all of you at some point today (today is my rest day).

Have a great day everyone,

Jodi

Good Morning Team: :surfweb:

I'm still in DC. I have a meeting at 8:30am, and then I'm heading back to BWI to go home. After 6 miles on Sunday (walk 3 and then wog 3 around the mall), I decided to do the elliptical here in the hotel yesterday. I did 45 min on the elliptical, then cooled off in the pool, and then relaxed in the whirlpool. It felt really good. Oh yeah, I did get my burger, fries, and a salad last night, but at least I didn't get burgers all 3 nights I was here.

Good training everyone!

Morning all!!

You go missing for a couple of days and you have five pages to catch up on.... you can tell we are getting closer to the start of "real" training! :thumbsup2

Sugaswim-- :welcome:

Janet-- :welcome:

Pat-- Congrats on the race!! :thumbsup2 Great pics!!

Lynne-- Sheesh. You know, I always feel so busy and tired until I read you posts. I have it easy!

Pungo-- I'll just "ditto" what everyone else said about mile time. Good is relative and temporary. In other words, what is good for you may be great or terrible for someone else... and what's good for you today may be slow six months from now. However fast you are going right now, the important thing is that you are starting

Sunny-- :grouphug:

Solo - You still out there? Upcoming fall seasons kicking your but??

You have no idea. Can't it be, I dunno, March yet?? :confused3

I got a three miler in yesterday (9:56/mile pace) and this morning (9:17/mile pace). The weather here has been perfect for running lately, so no complaints from me.

I can't believe "real" training starts Monday. Yowza! didn't we just finish this year's race a couple of weeks ago?? I need to get excited about training again, because right now--- not so much. I think it lacks the "newness" of last year. Everything kind of coming to a head over the next couple of weeks isn't helping either (the start of marathon training, classes starting, my new staff starts next week....) I'm sure I'll be ready to go on Monday.

I better dash-
Happy training all!
Kevin :earsboy:

Hello WISH Team!

I am a frequent lurker to this thread (not just daily, but maybe 3-4 times a day). Thanks to so many of you I completed the Full last year, it was my first marathon. I posted a couple of times and lurked often for advice and encouragement. I am registered again, only this time for the GOOFY (what was I thinking). I am running with some of the girls from work so we should have a great time.

I was just wondering if there is anyone who has a good training schedule for the GOOFY, I am trying to use some online ones and just can't seem to get one together. I would like to start serious training next week as that seems to be about the right time for starting.

Thank you

chersheyb :)

i thought about checking out the team in training thing too. just so i could maybe have someone to run with. but then i didn't know if they would get mad if i didn't try to raise money. i don't need a room or anything. my parents used their points and we're staying at the beach club villas. they're coming to watch me again... yay! and i don't know if really need anyone to train with anymore. my best friend did finally sign up for the marathon so we're going to try and do most of our long runs together. but if not i always have my ipod to keep me company :rotfl:

I am doing TNT as well. I set up my website and sent a link to every single person on my email list and with very little effort, I am already at 25% of my goal. Plus I have about 6 checks to turn in that will really make a difference. ANd a lot of people hve promised to contribute after pay day so it could be even better.

I thought the money was going to be a real pain in the neck to raise but so far it hasn't taken very much time or efort. When I tell people what I am doing they ask if they can contribute.

I love having the coaches at the training runs and I love having a big group to run with once or twice a week. It keeps things fun. Plus there are alot of people slower than me so I feel like I am fast. :lmao: :lmao:

Good Luck!
Cecilia

Pat -- Awesome pix! You and DH look fabulous and HAPPY! I am so glad for you! I really, really am suffering medal envy! ;)

I did my 60 min walk last night on the TM. Wasn't sure I'd get done before dark and my vision is bad enough that I didn't want to take a chance on the streets/sidewalks by myself. Covered 4.05 miles which translates to a 14:49 pace. Nice and slow and steady. Oh, did I mention that I particularly prefer the TM when I am in the middle of a good book? Yeah, that's me, dedicated walker with a book on the TM and hoping not to get so enthralled that I fly right off the end! :rotfl:

Tonight is supposed to be cross-training, but that won't work with a WW meeting and then rushing home to visit with an old friend. The next couple nights will probably be training-less as we get DD packed to move into college Friday.

Good morning all. :sunny:

My alarm went off at 4:15am. I laid there until 4:30 thinking bad thoughts. Like "I don't want to get up." "I don't want to train." "What am I doing? I'm no athlete." Then I got up and to prove myself I was wrong, I ran half my workout at 5.0. Yay for me!

Holy cow! I am so impressed that you all do such sophisticated training calendars! I put mine in a Word calendar, with either "train" or "rest" on each day. I have to figure out exactly what I'll be doing on those "train" days. Guess I better get to it, as Half training starts in a couple of weeks.

Krista - The yellow Jesus! Ha ha ha ha! :lmao: Come on, that's probably very precious to your mom.

Ohh Pat - Nice hardware!! Oh how beautiful it is there! WOW! Whoo hoo! Groovy shirts! :woohoo:

Holly - I know nothing about football, but I am married to a diving nut. He just went this past weekend, is going to Rhode Island the 26th and has two Dive Quests scheduled in September. For someone who has no interest in diving, I sure am learning a lot about it. We seem to always have a wetsuit hanging in our bathroom. :teeth:

Judy - How is everything going with the horse? Has the judge made a decision yet?

Cam - I am going to be driving down from Jacksonville for the Marathon and I am arriving on either Thursday night of Friday morning. If there are some people interested I have no problem stocking up on gels, etc from my local running store and delivering them to everyone at Friday Nights Dinner.

Sunny- I am so sorry for all the pain you are dealing with. I hope that the docs can find the problem and get it fixed for you.

Sonya - Congrats on your half!!

Holly - I am so time obsessed. I don't know what I would do if my stop watch on my watch broke!!

Cecilia - Hey!! We are NOT calling a 10:00 mile slow around here, it could be dangerous to your health!! ;) Actually, I was telling my DH today that I was going to do some speedwork today so that maybe I can get faster than a 10 min mile, so he'll quit telling me how slow I am. Of course, you can bet he means it only jokingly. Otherwise he would be fearing for his safety!! :headache:

chersheyb - Welcome back to the WISH Team!!

Well, I got up this morning and after dropping Michael off at school I put in 3 miles, wtih some speed intervals added in. I did my 3 miles in 28:20. So a 9:27 mile. For some reason I have gotten a cramp in my back during my LR on Saturday and again today at the end of my 3 miles. Any ideas? "O" and I forgot to tell everyone. I cut ALL of my hair off!! I had the guy cut something like 6 inches off of it on Sunday. It is a little difficult to get used to . My hair has always been long, and before I got it cut Sunday it was down to the middle of my back. Now it barely goes past my shoulders, but I had to do something to keep it from getting knotted while I ran. Anyway, I'll check back in later. Everyone have a good day!!

Dana

Hi WISH Team!

Dave, you are doing so well with your training. I am proud of you for sticking with it through injury and travel!

Dana! Wow! You cut your hair! I am sure you will be feeling the breeze now!

Jodi, well you answered my question b4 I asked. Sorry you felt you needed to leave employment there, but I guess I won't be trying either. Thanks for that.

Kevin, good luck with the start up of so much at one time. Hope your training will keep the stress down for you.

Lynne, I love when you delurk. I think of you often and send lots of PD to you so you can breeze through all that you have put on your plate. You are great!

Kathy, sorry to hear that you need surgery yet again. You amaze me that you are planning to keep "in step" with training too.

Dana, don't have an answer about your cramping other than what you already know about stretching a lot. Can you do any core strengthening exercises? Yoga/Pilates? Perhaps as things get a bit stronger those cramps may be a thing of the past?Take care not to injure.

chersheyb, I have a GREAT! plan that worked for me for my first marathon and the first Goofy. It came via the Charlotte folks and was put on the tricharlotte.com site. I didn't see it up there recently. Basically it called for doubling your LRs on the weekends where the mileage is 12 or more. That is not every weekend but basically most programs do that every other weekend. It worked for me! I took the MfM plan and on the 12 mile weekend I did 6 on Sat and 12 Sunday. Speed is not as important as distance. Keep you speed work for during the week. I am old so rested the day b4 and after LR weekends and modified my during the week plan according to what I was able to do. It works I tell you; it works! Others that are training here are using Hal Higdons intermediate marathon plans. I am not a Hal Higdon follower so I cannot advise on that one.

It's great that you are posting here now. Do that more often. I'd love to hear how your training is going and what you are doing.

I did not get to anything last night. When I got home from work it was raining and I never made it back out. I just could not face TM either. I guess I need an attitude adjustment again. I will be doing something today for certain!

Everyone else, have good runs/workouts. Oh and thanks for answering the calendar questions.
 I'm not alone.

I must add that I am proudly wearing my sunnyshopper cafepress Goofy tank shirt EVERYWHERE I am going. I think I will need another. I was going to use it as PJs, but...nope! :)

:thumbsup2

Judy - Wow!!! Great job on being speedy!!

I'm basically tapering this week. We are going to do our 1/2 ironman on sat or sun. Probably sunday unless the weather looks a bunch better on sat. I'm really nervous about the swim and the run. the bike should be fine. It has been a while since I swam a mile and I have never done more than 1/2 mile in open water!! (I think it will be fine, but...) Hopefully, phil will take lots of pics and I can post a race report. I need to go map the swim off today so we can set out a marker b/4 the race. I may try to swim either out or back in and have phil kayak w/ me.

Mel, no one has ever - EVER - used the words "Judy" and "speedy" in the same sentence before! :teeth: Thank you so much!

haha yeah i was so upset when my watch broke. i need to get a new one. but i've kind of put it off. i feel so much better about my runs right now that i'm only going based on how i feel. i swam for 14 years, so i live by the clock. and last year if i was even a little off i would flip out. i wanted to be faster everyday. so i was running to be faster everyday. which is a really stupid thing to do. cause it's not like i swam like that! i will get a new watch eventually but for right now this is working, just getting a general time...

omg i love diving and i haven't even done a 'real' dive yet. i've only done the training stuff in the pool and then my certification dives in a lake/quarry. but it's so much fun! i can't wait to go for real! i will be doing my first real dive in 3 weeks when we're in nassau. i cannot wait!! and then i plan on doing a lot of diving at christmas time as well. i think i've gotten myself into a very expensive 'hobby'. and i don't even own all my stuff yet. all i've got is a snorkel, fins and a mask :rotfl:

DH and I just got back from Mt. Evans, where we hiked to the top, which is 14,270 feet. Whew! I thought my lungs were going to give out......what a workout. lol Tomorrow I may do 6 miles. :yay:

This is a quick drive by posting...

I wanted to :welcome: the new members!

Congratulate the Chicago participants and finishers! :thumbsup2 :cheer2: :dance3:

Say hello to everyone!!

My life is greatly changing in the next two weeks and I will need all the support I can get to keep focused on my fitness and running goals. I will be taking 4 MBA level courses beginning August 29 (Yes, I'm now going FULL TIME!!!) and working for the Blood Bank of Delmarva for 20 +/ hours a week. When I'll find time to run is a mystery... but there is no doubt I will. At least in my mind. I hope my school and work time won't keep me from the family activities I enjoy so much.

Great efforts all around in training. Keep it up!

:grouphug:

Howard

Hi WISH Team!

Howard, talk with Lynne...she can tell you how to do it all and have time to spare! Good luck with everything.l
:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
monte, I cannot even imagine doing anything that high in the clouds other than me after the weekend event.

Holly, you've got it...have mask, fins and snorkel will travel! Enjoy the underwater view. It is fun. Take your time to look at all the little things.

MelR, good luck with the weekend.

Judy, I love your excitement. It is contagious. Yes read the post a few above. It is all relevant. You are getting to be speedy. Look at how you are improving!

I had a good time tonight. Speedy for me too! I did 3.46 miles in 48.34 for an average pace of 14:01...that is spectacular for me. I even had some faster stuff going on in there. Now that will not be a habit, but it was fun.

Good night everyone. Cherry pie calls me. Can't/won't resist.
