Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

I decided I'm just going to jump right in here and introduce myself!

I'm "in training" to walk the 1/2 marathon with two girlfriends and my 19-year-old daguhter. I'm also very overweight, 50 years old, but determined to work hard to make this dream come true for myself. I am walking faithfully 4-5 days a week with increasing distance, and I'm also going to Weight Watchers. My plan is starting September 15 to begin the about.com 1/2 marathon training schedule, and between now and then I'm working on reaching that recommended "comfortable" level at walking 3 miles 3 times a week and 4 miles on my 4th day. I'm doing that distance now without much effort, but later in the fall I'm going to really need to work on my speed in order to avoid the dreaded sweepers!

So, my plan for this week is 4 miles Sunday, 3 miles Tuesday and Thursday, and then I'm going to do a 10k volkswalk on Saturday (leisurely pace).

One thing I'm finding is when I walk with my dog (which is most of the time), who is a very athletic, long-legged doberman/lab guy, I do walk faster. Gosh, sure wish I could bring him to DW with me!

Question: How does one "officially" join the WISH racing team. Would love to see my name in that long and impressive list! I ordered a t-shirt and a sweatshirt...does that make me "official?"

Thanks for all of the inspiration I get from all you in reading these threads!

Karla

Karla--Well, first there's the membership fee, and then of course the hazing----Just kidding:rotfl2: --you're in!!! Glad to have you join us! please continue to post and update us on your training progress!:thumbsup2

Wow, congrats to all those with LW/LRs this morning. And what's this I hear about some of ya'll getting a blast of cooler air????? We may get a break sometime next week--meaning in the 90s instead of 100s.

WWDave--Congrats on your race! I'm am always amazed at how fast you race walk! Impressive!!!

Well, today was a nice rest day after the 16 on Friday--not too much residual pain from it. Still debating what to do tomorrow. I'll probably do the 4 miler scheduled on friday that I switched out for the LR. Then off to work I go! Have a great rest of teh weekend all!

WISHing all the CDCer's the best of luck tomorrow! We're with you in spirit!

Sweatshirt? How did I miss this?

Hi Karla. Welcome! If you're here, you're part of the group. We're very friendly and supportive and love to have new members join us. Pay homage to our reigning Queen Judy and you'll be just fine!;)

Nancy - Bummer about the blister. After this year's WDW full, I had an ugly purple blister around my middle toe. Yuck! Eventually lost the toenail, but it did grow back.

Beth - Great job on the 15 miles.:cool1:

I'll be anxiously waiting to hear how our CDC WISH-ers made out.

Vic - you faked me out. I opened the thread expecting to see Mel's post and there you were - starting us off this week!

Terri

:welcome: Karla! You are now officially part of the WISH team. All you have to do is state a willingness to join. We love new members. Mel (Chimera) or Vic (BigVic) will add you to the list. This is such a great group. Keep checking in and letting us know how your training is coming. Don't forget to add in a little cross-training to your plan, such as biking or elliptical or swimming or strength training. It will help improve your fitness overall.

Sending tons of :wizard: and happy thoughts to our CDC participants! Good luck everyone! We can't wait to read the trip reports and see all the photos from the WISH meets and the race. We all WISH we could be there with you in person, but we are with you in spirit. Go WISH Team Go! :cheer2:

My DH had neck surgery yesterday morning, but he is doing great now. He got to come home around 1 p.m. today. I think his being a marathon runner has helped speed his recovery immensely. We took a stroll around the block tonight. He is hoping to walk the 1/2 with me in January. The Goofy is out for him, but as long as his arm and neck pain go away, we are willing to make that sacrifice.

Good luck to everyone on your LRs this weekend. Stay cool and hydrated in all this heat.

Karla - welcome!

Ok, just a quickie to post a great deal in case anyone is interested.
I found this on another message board & thought someone here might appreciate it too:

Leslie Sansone fans-awesome deal
http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/...P=EMC-081007
Also use code CSAS $10 of order OR

This is a set of 12 of her DVDs that was $179 - for $19.99
Then use the $10 off code, and they cost me $15.94 shipped!
I have many of her DVDs and love them - I use them when I can't get out of the house for whatever reason to workout.

In the original post for the shirts, there were pictures of what was available, including a crew neck sweatshirt and a hoodie. I requested a hoody and a tshirt. I "think" that's what I'm getting??!!

:confused3

WOW - what a deal! I just paid $30 for the 1-2-3 mile DVD and the 4-mile DVD. Glad I haven't taken the wrappers off! I really like Leslie Sansone. Being in Oregon, I'm thinking a fair amount of my training from about Nov-Jan will have to include the treadmill and Leslie. I feel like I get a very brisk workout with her DVDs and hopefully that will even help me increase my walking speed. Here's the link I used (yours took me to the page but not quite to these DVDs): http://www.gaiam.com/retail/product/90-9050

And what's this I hear about some of ya'll getting a blast of cooler air????? We may get a break sometime next week--meaning in the 90s instead of 100s.

Stephanie - A blast of colder air was one way to put it for the weather on my long run this morning. 43 deg F :cold: I had to dig out the winter running tights and my wool socks!

I wound up running 6.2 mi in 1:09:43 for an 11:15/mi pace. The path I was out on was also the site of an ultramarathon at the same time! Wow, kudos to anyone attempting a 42.2 km race..!! I also fit in some upper body weights in the afternoon after the run. The good news is summer has made its way back around here, but the highs are reasonable in the mid 70s instead of the crazy heat we've had the last few weeks.

On Monday I'm going to try active release to help me out with my tight hip issues and piriformis pain. Has anyone tried active release before? My boot camp instructor recommended this fellow to me.

Thanks, my total came to $16.23. I went through Sunshine Rewards. It will be great to have a whole collection!

KRISTI!! thank you for such a fantastic tip!! i just ordered a set and sent the link to some of my friends. for $15 i'm fine to just wait and see which ones are included :teeth: i have one of those pictured, but anything of the set that is duplicate i can take to my consignment store for resale ::thanks::

:welcome: KARLA!! i admire your motivation and commitment to change your life!

i got a 6.25 miler in yesterday before a day spent shopping and dining and watching Harry Potter. it was a fantastic day, we were kidless!

anyhow -- i've been frustrated that my pace is NOT where i thought it was in my nice little world i lived in before Garmin. do you all have tips for speeding myself up a bit. i wasn't sure if it is the 10 lbs extra i'm carrying, the 4 beers i had the night before, or all the above. I have been doing speed intervals twice a week, only for a week or two though. maybe i just need to give it time. i was doing 4 mins/1 mins intervals for 40 mins. it normally takes me 2 miles to feel like i'm in my groove and pace, how can i jumpstart myself to get right into it?

you all are the bestest!

PD for speedy recovery for Heather's DH!

Morning teammates. I'm in a foul mood this morning. I had to scrap my run this morning--and am not happy about it. DS decided that 5:30am was the perfect time to try to wake the neighbors with his blood curdling screams. Turns out nothing was wrong-except he was ready to get out of prison, I mean bed, and play. DH hurt his back running yesterday, yes, PD needed for him, so I was on kiddo duty. And to top it off, it's actually pleasant here this morning, at least for Aug. Mid-70s and not so much humidity--it will, however, be over 100 when I get home from work this afternoon-So no hopes of an afternoon jog. Oh well! Better luck next week!

Thinking of all the WISHers out on the road this am--especially the CDCer's! GO WISH GO!!

Heather--lots of PD to your DH for a speedy recovery. Wow, that he went for a walk the afternoon after surgery.

ohMom--I've increased my speed gradually over the past year, and now run about a minute faster per mile than this time last year. I try to do at least one speed workout or tempo run per week. With the speed workout, I do 4X800 reps at pretty much as fast as my legs will allow, with a nice walk recovery break between reps. And the tempo run, is just at a pace that's a little faster than my comfortable pace. You'll see it posted that the only way to run faster, is to run faster. You have to train your body to go a little faster--go slowly and you should notice some results! Good luck to you!

Vic--Thanks for getting us started in a new week!

Leana--Holy Cow on the weather! That's my ideal weather for marathon training--Might come up for a visit!

Okay, better check on the kidlets--as now both of them are up. Have a great Sunday all!

Good morning everyone!

Karla - :welcome: Your $1,623,866.18 membership fee can be paid in three easy payments. :thumbsup2 :rotfl: Mel will get you on the list.

Terri - Mel trusted me with the store this week.

Heather - Glad to hear the DH is doing well.

Leana and ohMom - WTG with the 6 milers! :thumbsup2

Stephanie - Sorry you couldn''t get your run in this morning.

It's already 82 degrees outside. TM day today.

Y'all take care. :)

Good Morning Team

Karla :welcome: You have come to the right place. There were so many times I wanted to give up in the past year, but I would come here and read and whine and they would inspire me and push me through!!

Heather MUCH pixiedust: for your husband!! We definately know about surgery recoveries!!!

Stephanie MUCH pixiedust: for Scott too!! And I am SOOOO sorry about your run I know how frustrating that is.

Leana I can NOT even begin to fathom those kinds of temperatures right now!!:scared1:

OhMom I'm sorry you are so frustrated!! :grouphug: I can say for me it seems like we ran at the same pace FOREVER, and then it just started kicking in. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but I just want to encourage you to keep trying. I can say it also took quite a few runs of DH pushing me to go faster, so hard that I was cussing him under my breath, but it worked.

So training report: I ran 4 miles twice this week and have been very frustrated with my lack of being able to get out there, either because of work, or when I finally go to get out there, IT"S THUNDERSTORMING.

So I woke up early yesterday morning (huge deal for me -- I don't run in the mornings, except race days) and I ran 5, then I went to the gym and did 1/2 hour core class, then PUMP class (weight lifting). So that was good, but the best part is this morning;

I got up -- later than I wanted -- so the heat was kicking in, but I did 6 MILES !!!  for the first time since MINNIE!!

MY back is killing me right now, but I really have seen an improvement in that area too!!

Gotta go jump in the shower and get ready for church.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

angie

Ok Pretty Princesses of WISH, you have to stop wearing out your men.

Good morning Team, happy Sunday.

Here is your "YARC" treat for the day:

HOW TO CLEAN THE HOUSE

1. Open a new file in your PC .

2. Name it 'Housework.'

3. Send it to the RECYCLE BIN.

4. Empty the RECYCLE BIN .

5. Your PC will ask you,

'Are you sure you want To delete Housework permanently?'

6. Calmly answer, 'Yes,' and press mouse button firmly......

7. Feel better?

Everyone enjoy your rest and recovery day and CDC Racers, the WISH shirt is magic.

Dave:hippie:

Okay everyone. Stand away from your monitors in case lightning strikes. I actually have training to reort. (Lookout Skywalker Dave, here I come.:darth: ) Tues. and Wed. I walked 1.25 miles. Yesterday I walked 1.5 miles. I hope to get in a LSW (although I still think LSD sounds better) tonight. This is the first week I have been able to get in back to back walks and more than two walks in a week without the hips or back acting up. So far, pace is about 20 minute miles. (I guess SW Dave (and all the WISH-lets out there) are safe ... FOR NOW!)

I am currently doing a modified 5K plan combining Hal Higdon's 5K walking plan and John Bingham's 5K walking plan. After completing that, I will continue with a half marathon walking plan to be ready for the ToT and Donald. [Stage note: Can a Goofy in 2009 be that far away, he asks himself foolishly at this time?) Although not impressive yet, it is something for me to achieve some consistancy on my long road back to health and thanks to all of you for your company and encouragement so far.

Good morning WISHers! It seems like another nice day today in PA. I might think of doing a bike ride with the kids later. I will probably take a rest day after running my LR yesterday....but I was considering a short recovery run today to bulk up my mileage this week. I am pretty sore, and I have what felt like a side stitch yesterday but it is still there today??? Maybe a pulled abdominal muscle? I have had it now on and off for two weeks, and it is starting to bug me! I had to work through it yesterday during my run, but it never really felt better. :confused3 :confused3

PaDisneyFan: I am sorry to hear about the blister.....bet you sure felt it in the shower! I find all my areas of soreness as soon as I hit the shower!:headache: I had a few areas from yesterday......OW! So, what exactally did dh do to the leaves.....they are still on the tree, aren't they?:confused3

Karla::welcome: I think you will find this a very happy, helpful group. This is definitely the place to be for encouragement.

Leana: Great job on the 6.2 miles
1:banana:   And a great time too!

Stephanie: I know what the 3 alarm waking of the children! I am lucky that my kids are now older, and just get up themselves. Sending PD's for dh's back. I hope he's back on the road again soon.

WWDave: I am all for the 'housecleaning' the modern way! Wouldn't take any time at all!!! All the more time to get ourselves fit!

I am hoping for the best with the CDC participants this weekend!!:grouphug:
I hope everyone else has a good rest/training day!

Beth

2.5 on the TM. Inserts feel ok. Glad I've been able to resurrect my Kayanos.

I'm still a walking, talking snot factory. Sure wish I could kick this thing.

PatsBill - WTG!!

WWDave - Good joke. :rotfl:

Angie - WTG with the 6 miler!

Beth - Take care of yourself.

:)
