Wk of 23 November - WISH Walking and Running Club

Just back from running in the cold windy rain. Now that is dedication! (And yes, it sucked.) :lmao:

You get a prize. It was UGLY here yesterday.:worship:
According to the boyfriend he thinks I should take a few days off. My legs were really not happy yesterday, but today they feel a LOT better.

I am going to try a short jog on the TM tomorrow.

Jeff, glad your Peanut is doing better. She is such a cutie (as is her sister!) They must take after mom. :lmao: (Just kidding)

Carol,

My wife likes to say, "18 months of carrying both my girls, and they both look like you (meaning Jeff). No justice in this world."

My retort is, at least you didn't get two boys. :lmao:

Travel costs, shortage of flights could put $20M dent in event

As much as they love running, thousands of Japanese residents just can't find a way to run to the Honolulu Marathon.
High cost of travel, a fuel surcharge to cover high oil prices and lack of flights have already contributed to a decline in Japanese entrants for December's Honolulu Marathon.
In preliminary figures released yesterday, total entries have dropped by more than 4,000 — more than half from Japanese entrants — which likely will put a dent of $15 million to $20 million in the $100 million in economic impact the race usually generates.
Previous economic studies of the Honolulu Marathon found that Japanese entrants bring at least one person with them to Hawai'i, spend $270 to $280 a day and stay for five days.
"All of a sudden, you don't have 2,800 to 2,900 Japanese — and they are the highest spenders," said Hawai'i Pacific University professor Jerry Agrusa, who did the previous studies. "This is a big injection of yen, cash, into the economy, especially now with the significant decrease in tourism.
"Will they spend as much as last year? We'll have to see."
There are 13,670 Japanese entries for this year's race, compared with more than 16,000 who had signed up by last November for the 2007 race.
Japanese entrants accounted for more than 17,000 of last year's 27,827 total entrants. The Honolulu Marathon, the third-largest race in the U.S., generated nearly $109 million last year, including $3.7 million in state taxes.
That figure is expected to be $85 million to $90 million this year.
"It's a larger tourism issue in terms of flight capacity from Japan, which has been going down in the last few years," said Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon Association. "We do have, essentially, waiting lists — for lack of ability for finding a way to get here.
"We expect to see most of the economic impact is coming from Japanese visitors and Mainland and foreigners."
Flights earlier this year were more than $700, plus an additional $300 to $400 fuel surcharge. That fuel charge, which Agrusa said was somewhat of a deterrent, has since dropped.
LOVE of RUNNING

Japanese entries have long accounted for more than 60 percent of the marathon's entries. It's an event that has appealed to the Japanese, particularly the race's lack of a time limit.
Some marathons ask participants to leave the course if they haven't finished within a certain time.
Here, Barahal said, first-time entrants, who make up two-thirds of Japanese participants, have the confidence of knowing they can finish. And Japan is enjoying a boom in marathon running.
"It's very well known, our relationship with Japanese runners," Barahal said. "The Honolulu Marathon is very famous in Japan, more famous than New York or Boston. It seems to be a place to be able to finish a marathon."
Barahal still expects a late rush of entries, hoping for 1,500, with 1,000 of those coming from Japan.
Fewer local entrants
Last year's timing fiasco, which resulted in missed finishers, incorrect results and nearly two months of video review, apparently has not affected the entry numbers or loss of sponsors. In fact, Barahal said, the feedback is that the marathon handled the situation well.
"There was no fall from that except it was problems last year that I don't want to happen again," Barahal said. "It's not responsible for the drop in numbers."
The marathon raised its early entry fee for Hawai'i residents from $20 to $30, and as expected, entries dropped by 1,500 compared with November 2007.
U.S. Mainland entries have dropped slightly, while international (non-Japan) entries are up. Still, the focus is on Japan.
"The yen is doing OK. They are going to spend money," Agrusa said.

Hey Team,

I cranked out 8 miles with Guru Les, average 8:16 pace. We were flying, all on account of we hit every green traffic light. No red lights to catch my breath. Oh well, it felt good to be gliding along.

Hi, gang...
I know...I said a couple of weeks ago that I would try to get caught up on everyone. I didn't. :sad2: But I'm here now!! so will do my best!

So excited for everyone ramping up for the WDW races!
I suppose it's best that I decided to sit this year out, since I had rotator cuff surgery last Monday. I'm on post-op day 9, and doing quite well! Was tickled to find out yesterday I can be out of my sling around the house. The PT stretches are not comfortable, between the surgery tightening things up around my shoulder, and having been immobilized for 8 days. Can I tell you how good it felt just to straighten my elbow?! ...it's the little things... :cloud9:

So, no running for 7 more weeks. I'm fine with that. Have gotten in some nice walks, and been on the bike (on the trainer) once so far. Won't be swimming for a while, but told the PT that I would like to do my first tri of 2009 in early April, so we're shooting for that.

Sorry I missed the folks at SA marathon...hope you had fun...it was a great day for a run! My BIL did his first marathon. :woohoo:

Jeff...sorry 'bout your little Peanut. Kids heal fast, so I'm sure she'll be fine.

everyone else...train hard, and I will get on track with y'all!

Goog Morning everyone!!!

I just thought I would post a photo of the sunset at the park that I walk at on Tuesday night. It is right on the edge of the everglades. I just missed the sun it tucked in right before I got the camera up...

sunset.jpg

We have only 44 sleeps until the WDW 5K race or scream teaming!!

Have a good Wednesday everyone...

Tracy

Tracy Thanks for the picture. Since I am waiting for the sun to come up, I will consider it sunrise!

Been doing all XT this week so as not to aggravate the PF gods. Today is really quiet here at work. I think there are three people in my immediate office area--usually there are 25-30.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We will be up and on the road early to go to Pittsburgh for dinner at M-I-L's assisted living facility (can you say pre-chewed turkey?) I have purchased a nice bottle of wine to compensate for what I expect to be mediocre food. That and some football should do it for me tomorrow. Hope the hotel has a treadmill or something--may as well get in some XT while I'm there.

Maura

:sunny: Here's some sun for all of yall up in the cold parts! :sunny:
It's in the 40's here, but that seems pretty warm by comparison!

:tinker: Jeff here's some pixie dust for your Peanut and for a nice dull boring normal week.

AFM: I got in my 16 miler before my trip this weekend and I wasn't even sore from it! (followed by a 5 hr car ride) I did come down with a cold while over there so it was nice to be rather lazy for the weekend. I'm currently working on writing up my trip to the Greek Fest which my prof said would "write itself". A twenty page paper "writing itself"??? Not so far! Something to do in case I decided to relax during Thanksgiving "break". HA! Only two weeks of school left anyway. And then its break and thennnnnnn :goofy: :goofy: :goofy:

Claire - A 16-miler followed by a car ride adn you weren't sore???? :worship: Way to go!!

Maura - Hope teh PF and the football gods treat you well!
;)

Betsy - SO glad you are doing well! I've been worried about you, but figured it's hard to post with 1-armed. With your attitude adn determination, you will be good as new before you know it! COngrats ot BIL on his 1st marathon!!!

Tracy - Beautiful pic!!\

Shan - WTG n putting up with cruddy weather adn still gettign out there!

Jeff - Great job on teh 10-miler!!!

Carol - LIsten to those legs. If tey're not feeling 100% today, let tehm rest.

I did 50 min in yucky conditions last night. Thermometer said it was warmer than SAturdya, but ti certainly didn't feel like it.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! (FOr those not from teh US, feel free to pig out and celebrate with us!)

Hi everyone! Went out for a 3 miler with DF last night. He hadn't been drinking water at all yesterday so it was slow going. I decided to run with him anyway - mostly to make sure he kept running (but also because my knees were a little sore from Monday's workout and Sunday's race - shh! don't tell him  ) It's snowing now but I hope it lets up by this afternoon so I can go out running tonight.

Maura - Love it when the office is quiet! Do you have resistance bands or a jump rope you can bring with you? I know they're not the same as a TM but they'll give you a nice workout.

Tracy - 44 days only :scared1: That's just over a month! I can't believe how quickly this year has gone by. I'll have a look at your pic when I get home, it's blocked at work.

Besty - Glad to hear you're on the mend! I hope your PT is able to get you back up and running in time for your tri!

Claire - Keep that sunshine coming!! WTG on the 16 miles :)

Jeff - I'll have to tell DF about the Honolulu Marathon. I'll say it's for the economy :goodvibes One of these days when I get up to running a full, I'll have to keep that race in mind.

Shan/Kim/Carrie - WTG for getting out there in yucky weather! That's dedication! :cheer2:

Have a fantastic day everyone and keep up the great work!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my USA WISH Family. Enjoy the holiday. (To the Canucks up North, you had your Thanksgiving last month :lmao: ).

Note: CNN reported the average person needs to run 20 miles to work off your holiday feasting. So if you don't feel like running 20 miles, use a smaller plate, and put down the fork before you're stuffed.

Way to go on the miles everyone. Keep up the training!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I am posting from beautiful Cape Elizabeth, Maine. We saw so many stars tonight it was amazing. You forget what you miss by living in the city.

We are having an early dinner tomorrow, so I will hopefully get out there later in the afternoon and work some of that off. I am looking forward to getting a chance to explore a new area.

Have a great day.

A young man named John received a parrot as an early Christmas gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back.

John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and shoved him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arm and said 'I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior.'

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued....

........"May I inquire as to what the turkey did?'

~ Happy Thanksgiving to all ~

Nice Jeff..... That was a funny!!:rotfl2:

Just wanted to check in and say...

Have a wonderful day everyone filled with family, friends, good thoughts, and wonderful food!!

Happy Turkey Day,
Tracy

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I ran 4 miles last night - I went slowly because I think there were still icy patches on the sidewalks and roads even though it looked pretty clear. Going to run on the TM tonight and get in some speedwork.

Hope everyone is enjoying their day off :)

I ran the Honolulu Turkey Trot 10 mile race. $3.00 entry fee, no medals, no shirts, but lots of prizes.

Watches, Garmins, Ipods are forbidden, as you must predict your finish time on a tongue depressor that you turn in at the finish line.

I predicted 1:30:00, and finished 1:32:16. I was 13.6 seconds average per mile slower than my prediction. I could have come in closer, but cruised the last mile and a quarter down Diamond Head, because I thought I was under my time. Oh well, slower is better.

A friend I train with, was 1 second off her total time, and won 1st place for the finishers over the two hour mark. The winner of the finishers under the 2 hour mark was 2 seconds over his predicted time.

Our team competition, 25 racers per team, and total combined time. My team finished 4th out of 4 teams. We were 2:32 over our total team average. The winning team was 1:32 over their average.

Fun race, if you're ever in the islands for Thanksgiving.

Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving.

I'll be putting in my steps to work off my plateful tomorrow.

Hi, all!

Sorry I haven't been around. DH had a death in the family so we were at a funeral on Monday. Tuesday we helped move some VERY heavy Thanksgiving baskets the students at my school had put together. They were probably close to 40 pounds each, minus the turkey.

I helped carry 25 of them.

I hurt my back. :(

I iced it and took ibuprofen the night I did it, and then the next night, too. It's not too bad in the morning, but by 7 or 8 pm, it hurts to stand up and i'm almost in tears.

This is no way to train!

We'll be at the Beach club Friday and Saturday night for marathon weekend, and then we're moving to WL for the last night (couldn't get all three nights at the beach club). I'm in the process of making final decisions on the airfare (the times are terrible--either 3 pm or 9:30 pm).

So....

Back to my ridiculously long post, in no particular order:

ALOHA JEFF: So sorry to hear about Peanut! I hope she feels better soon. Looks like you are still enjoying pretty good training weather!

RACY TRACEY: Nice photo of the Everglades! I can't wait until WDW either.... It is the only thing that makes the holidays coming to an end okay!

MAURA: Are you hanging in there with all this cold? It's crazy, right? I hope your Thanksgiving dinner exceeded your (very low) expectations. Or at least that the wine helped!

CARRIE: That is so funny! My family always jokes about a trip we took in January years ago. It was in the 50s, and the bus drivers had gloves and hats and winter coats. My dad was in short sleeves. One family was in shorts, and we knew without asking that they were from Michigan! :rotfl:

TXANG: Hi! Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

BUNNYFOO: Be careful on that ice!

KIRA G: Photos? Sounds lovely!

LILOUISIANAGAL: If you find a way to get 20 page papers to write themselves, I'd be interested.... You'll make it through the end of the semester, Im sure... And then you can be Goofy! Hooray!

IRONZ: Here's wishing you PD for speedy healing! :wizard:

Welcome back Duckie!

:wizard: to your family, and to your back aches. You'll get back into the swing of training in no time.

Claire & Duckie:

Thanks for thinking of our little Peanut. I should be able to pull off her stitches tomorrow. They are the disolvable type, so just a tug with tweezers, or a snip with scissors.

It's Aloha Friday, we're marching our Girl Scouts in a parade this evening. Should be fun.

Thanks, Jeff!

The worst part for me was the nurse saying, "YOU carried the baskets? Why didn't someone else carry them?"

And I said, "Other people were carrying them. But I didn't want to say I couldn't do it because I'm smaller than they are."

And she looked at me like I had three heads.
"But you are smaller than they are."

I felt like I was seven again, too small to help the big kids. :(

Don't try to take the stitches out yourself! It may be easy to do, but it seems like the kind of thing that would take years of therapy to undo... ("And then my dad took out his pocketknife and ripped the stitches out!")..

Enjoy some warm weather for me!

Duckie
