with the new travel warnings, is anyone afraid to fly??

This happens every year around the aniversary of 9/11. Really all we can do is know that security is very tight around the airports and that they are doing everything possible to insure that we won't be in danger. If you don't feel comfortable flying, consider driving or another mode of transportation, but don't let these threats make you live in fear. If you do, then the enemy has won, yet again!

I am not afraid to fly. I am, however, growing more concerned about driving. Everyday I see more dangerous drivers on the road. For me...flying is easy, driving is what frightens me.

Well I am taking my first trip to the USA in November with my husband and heard this news yesterday.

I am a little concerned as it is my first major overseas trip.

However I think it would be damn near impossible for anyone to get anything past the security and onto the plane. Also like another poster said we would be wiser and would fight back in numbers.

Also like someone else said if you time is up it's up.

With security at a high I think it would be hard to carry anything like 9/11 off again.

Am I nervous about flying? Yep. Always am. Now, with the increased terror alerts, we try not to talk about it in front of dd, 9. Now, funny someone said something about being menopausal. My dh, just last night, said to me that he pitied anyone trying to stop my trip to WDW considering my present state of mind. Okay, so I'm a little testy, cranky and hot!!! I'ld love to know how many of us (testy, cranky and power-surging) ladies are going to be on my flights!!! Between coming between my trip to WDW and trying to harm my family....well, let's not go there.
I am concerned but we're going in two weeks!!!

I was really scared to fly when I first heard about the possibility of another terror attack by the end of the summer on the east coast....but then I started thinking and I don't think the terrorists would be stupid enough to do the whole plane thing again. I am more worried that they are going to do something on the ground .... like try to blow up Disney World or something  But Im over it now because the excitement of going to Disney in 15 days (woohoo!) has beat out the fear!!!!

I am once again getting close to a trip to see the mouse, I looked back through some of my old posts. I still feel the same way as I did very shortly after 9/11/2001.

Honeymoon
I am scheduled to fly to WDW in 62 days. My wedding is scheduled for a Saturday, and my lovely new bride and I are scheduled to depart for the land of Mickey the Monday after. In light of Tuesday’s events, we had a long discussion about the wedding/honeymoon and have decided to continue on with our plans and lives as usual. I am saddened to hear that some are giving up their trips entirely, however I do understand the reasons for your decision.. My fiancé and I have been planning our time with the mouse for so long that we cannot back out now. If the time comes that the lord decides to place us in harms way, it is all in his plan. We will be together, and at a time like this, that is all that matters to us. We chose to be together, and will not allow fear to hold us back.

Is is still possible to hijack a large airliner in the US and use it (and its fuel load) as a weapon? Yes. Is it likely that the large airliner would have passengers on it? No.

If you think about it, the changed security measures re: passenger movements on aircraft will make hijacking an occupied passenger aircraft way more trouble than it would be worth, and the effort would be too likely to fail. I think that if anyone is planning to hijack a large aircraft to use as a missile in the US, the targeted aircraft is almost certain to be a cargo plane.

Yes I am scared to fly, very scared, but I've always been scared to fly. I've only flown twice before(as a child and 12 years ago to wdw)We are leaving tomorrow night at Midnight from Sacramento. It is my boys's first flight, they are almost 9 and 4.5 and I'm trying my hardest not to let them see my fear, esp. my oldest who will feed on my fear. I am bringing xanaxx(sp)for me that way I can still be coherent but it will bring my aniexty level down, ALOT! LOL

Even though I'm beyond scared, I'm not letting that ruin my trip and ruin my boys's first trip to the world.

Yes. I admit it. I was afraid to fly before 9/11 and I am concerned about flying in 2 weeks. My sister just asked me this morning if I had any thoughts of canceling our trip. For a moment I thought about driving instead and just "eating" the $200 in airfare. Then I remember our last trip to Disney this past November. I tried to convince myself we drove because it was more economical and I wanted to spend a few days at the DVC Hilton Head resort. Those were true and valid reasons but they weren't the REAL reason we didn't fly. I was petrefied and my son told me he absolutely refused to get on a plane. We drove. The trip down was kind of exciting and we stayed at Hilton Head for 4 days.

On the trip from Hilton Head to Disney we witnessed a bad traffic accident that happened just a few cars behind us. I remember thinking so much for my theory that driving is safer than flying. I felt so sorry for all those people. I hoped and prayed no one was seriously injured but it did reconfirm for me that as scared as I am of flying, I am just as scared of having a car crash into mine at 70+ miles an hour and I am also just as scared of my darling hubby taking an extra shift at the wheel and falling asleep.

So having said all that, we will be on that plane to Orlando in 2 weeks and I will be keeping my promise to my 5 year old niece that she can have breakfast with Cinderella in her castle.

I hope everyone has nice and safe flights to Disney!

I have flown four times since 9/11 (the first in Oct of '01, a month after the attacks) and am about to fly again down to the World. I have to say I feel safer now than I did before.

Also, for what it's worth, I heard that 2002 is one of the safest years on record as far as air travel goes (nothing really to do with terrorists, but still a good sign).

I think a lot of our fear of flying is the fact that whatever happens miles above the earth in that metal tube is completely out of our control. Even though we might "cross the street and get hit by a truck" we have much more control over a situation like that.

In any case, we can't stop living, and flying is a part of living for a lot of us.

Oh Yeah, I am DEFINATELY a little bit afraid to fly but then again, I've always HATED flying anyway! Actually, I think we are probably more safe now then we have ever been in the past because of the safety measures now in place! My kids have only been on a plane two other times so as long as I keep my cool and find things for them to do...they are alright. I can't say that I won't be watching the other passangers pretty closely though! especially during the Christmas season.

I've been flying all my life.

When I was a teen we lived overseas in the military; I've flown to Europe and back well over a dozen times. Flying NEVER got to me until I had a massive panic attack on my last flight--who were the wizards that decided APOLLO 13 was an acceptable trans-atlantic movie????

Hmmmmm????

Since then we haven't flown once; my husband does NOT like flying at all (and he was asleep when I had my panic attack!)

Having said that I personally think flying is a great means of transportation--I would say extremely convenient, but security at the airports takes forever now.

Now I AM scared of dying a long drawn out painful death or lingering for years in a nursing home, abandoned by kith or kin BUT am not afraid of going to Disney World or anywhere else I wish to go. If fate determines that I am to flee the bounds of this earthly existence it might as well be while I am HAVING a good time rather then DREAMING about having one!

Let 'er rip!!

Slightly Goofy/Linda

Hey slightly goofy, I am THERE with you! I guess I never thought about it that way....at least my family will be together having FUN!
as long as we don't go down in water....I'm afraid of DROWNING! (HAHA!)
'

"who were the wizards that decided APOLLO 13 was an acceptable trans-atlantic movie????"

I had the same reaction to seeing "A Perfect Storm" on a transatlantic flight. Hello; we are flying over an OCEAN?

Well, I'll be flying over in October, and as far as I'm concerned, I'll be no more or less afraid of flying than I was before 9/11.

Pre-flight security is incredibly strict these days, and it would be nigh on impossible to smuggle anything that resembled a weapon onboard a plane - I was recently stopped by security for having something that vaguely ressembled a pair of scissors in my bag.

Cockpits now often have sealed armoured doors on flights that can only be opened from the cockpit side.

There is now often an armed air marshal on the flight - how do you think any prospective terrorist is going to feel about taking over the plane with a plastic knife when they're looking down the barrel of a gun?

The number of people that wouldn't stand for someone acting up has already been proven - anyone remember the guy who tried to light explosives in his shoes on a flight? His police mugshot showed him with at least one black eye, as well as a number of cuts and bruises on his face - would suggest to me that he was more than "suitably restrained" by everyone else onboard.

What I'm trying to convey is the fact that 9/11 sparked a worldwide clamp down on airport and airplane security. If you don't feel comfortable flying, by all means, stay on the ground, but I personally feel as safe in the air as I would in a car.

I'm going to Florida this October by plane and I'll do it again next year too.

Hey NotUrsula, I guess I better have a life vest handy huh? "Perfect storm" on a flight over the ocean? EEEEWWW! that'd be like watching "airport"

My family flies out on Monday. My teenage son is apprehensive,
my husband always gets "sweaty palms" when flying and my
daughter and I prefer flying anyday over 'car trips'.
I always try to live each day to the fullest after my cancer and
I made it thru that! No - we are going to fly to Disney but be very aware of everyone around us. We have a direct flight. Now in my mind - what terrorist would TRY to ruin a plane full of tourists going to see the MOUSE. Our plane isn't even full. A little prayer and faith go a long way..........

Mickey - here we come:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I think we all are more diligent now...I travel about once a month and I am much more observant about who is getting on the plane, etc. Having said that I will continue to fly (it's part of my job), restrain my fear....after all I have a laptop and I'm not afraid to use it!

Like others, I'd rather live my life as full as possible instead of worrying about it.

You bet. Always have been and probably always will be. But here's a story for you. We're surprising the kids w/ a trip this September. Originally we were going to leave from Newark to mco
on 9/12. DH managed to somehow get some sort of holiday and his office is going to be closed on 9/12 (no vacation day- just a paid day off). We decided we could not pass up an opportunity like that for an extra day in the world so we're leaving 9/11/03. Lets make it worse, shall we?
We're staying for 13 days.
