I can't begin to count how much time I have spent at the Jersey Shore. I have been up and down the coastline many many times. I even used to work on the Boardwalk (Casino Pier) in Seaside Heights in the Haunted House that was at the end of the pier. I remember Asbury Park and Long Branch in their heydays. I remember playing some wheels of chance for a nickel a spin. Beach badges that you pin onto your bathing suit. Being able to bring a cooler on the beach, with alcohol, legally. Pinball games that gave you 5 balls for a dime or 3 plays for a quarter. Renting a beach cottage 3 doors down from the beach for under $250.00 per week. The list goes on and on. I love the Jersey shore and the memories it has given me.

Welcome to NJ! It's not as bad as all of those comedians make it sound

I've not been to many NJ beaches since my dad and now my DH have always owned boats that they keep in marinas in Cape May.
We always end up doing Wildwood or Cape May. Wildwood has it's +'s and -'s, ( the beaches there are one of the few that are still FREE!!) it's a matter of personal taste. I would though highly recommend a visit to Cape May. It's a very quaint, Victorian town. Lots of cute little shops (have the kids stay outside w/ DH!) and cafes, carriage rides and historical tours. Many couples find it a pleasant get-away for a weekend. There are tons of bed and breakfasts.

Oh, I almost forgot. When the kids get a bit older they will like the waterparks that are at the ends of Morey's Pier and Mariners Landing in Wildwood.

The family (all 17 of us) will be in Ocean City, NJ in the beginning of July as well. They have been renting a summer house there for at least as long as I have been part of the family (the in-laws). We will be there from June 28 - July 12th -- I can't remember what area though -- I think somewhere around 17th & the BoardWalk. Can't wait to finally be there, although DH and I only live about 20 minutes away from there anyway!
