WISH'ers walking, running and "other"ing in 2012--General Discussion thread

Hi all

Cindy- Good luck on the rest of training for Boston.

Megan - Hope you like your Vibrams. I've seen a couple of people around here run in them but I've never tried them myself.

Hockeychic- Good luck on your goals. Just be careful not to over do it and get sidelined. I don't race often so I'm still PRing every race but I know the day will come when that won't be possible or practical. For me it will probably be Disneyland. I don't know if PRing and enjoying the course, taking pictures go hand in hand.

Maura - Congratulation on getting another 20mile in. Hopefully the weather in MI will be as nice as it's supposed to be here the next couple of weeks.

Tracy - Good to hear from you again. Hope you surgery goes well.

AFM - I'm definately going to be taking Cindy's suggestion to start a little further back. I normally to that anyways. It's a relatively small race, under 1,000, so the course should clear up fairly quickly. I'm hoping to get towards the back of the runners/front of the walkers. Today I did almost 5 miles doing a walk .15 miles/run .35 miles. I was on a trail with 1/2 mile markers so it was fairly convenient (even though it was programmed into my garmin). In the middle of my run, I had an epiphany of sorts about the race. Instead of running by time, run by distance. I've been running by Distance 1 day a week anyways in my attempt to run farther. I just needed to calculate (practice) the right Distance that I can do quickly. At my Goal run pace, 1:15 of running (I did during my tempo run) equated to .11 mi. If I go too fast, I'll run a shorter period of time. I'm going to keep the walking by time though. I'm going to give it a try my next several times out to see how it works, and adjust things.

I'm back....I have struggled physically since Feb. 7 and Dr. said not to run Princess Half, which I did and paid for it. She thought I had a horrid virus, but after not bouncing back and other physical stuff I returned to the Dr. to have more tests..well, it's not a virus but I had some strep bacteria I had in the recent past. Some test (sorry all you medical people, I can't keep up with medical terms and try to hit the highlights) was 187 somethings and normal is 1-16. So a round of anitbiotics should cure me! Yeah!

Marua and Cindy are going to kick butt in the Boston Marathon.

Jeremy will also kick butt in his race.

Sugthat's quite a ways to travel for a 5K! Just book air to Alaska for this summer!

DianeGood thing you have that job as I would probably be fired by now!

mlaHope you love your new shoes.

HockeychicGood luck with your goals!

Jimb and JohnvnI love the hot weather..Princess didn't bother me at all

TracyHope all goes well with your surgery.

AmandaI have no advice, but good for you for exercising

Sorry if I missed some one, but Good luck on your run/walks

Joan Hope the antibiotic kicks in and knocks it back quickly.

Nothing much to say except that tomorrow I am doing 10 so I'll go ourtdoors. I am running in the am, so won't be able to take full advantage of the temp which is expected to reach 60!

Still......may break out the shorts. Yahoo!

Maura

Hi all

Today was a great day, temps in the 60's. I got back from my 10 mile run. I had my parents drop me off 10 miles from the house along a local trail and then I ran home. I tried my new plan but being a long day I did run .1 mi./ walk 2:00. It was a slight net up hill route especially in the first 5-6 miles, about 100ft. My overall average pace was a 14:30. and this time I had fairly negative splits for at least the first 9 miles. The last mile was through town so slightly more positive because of traffic. I'm feeling a little bit better about the half marathon April 3rd.

Sugthat's quite a ways to travel for a 5K! Just book air to Alaska for this summer!

Yes- a long flight for 30 min of running. However, a great excuse for a vacation! I was hoping to do the Princess 1/2 but my DH work schedule did not allow it (missed it by 1 day:sad1:) maybe 2012...
When will you be in AK? Hopefully we have good weather for you!

Joan, I hope the antibiotics kick in and work for you. You did lot just a bit "under" the weather at the Princess. More like on the tired side when I saw you.

Jeremy, I like that idea of being dropped off 10 miles from home, it's like you have to now do all 10 miles or you don't get home. That is one reason I like to do "out & backs", cause I then know I have to turn around and go all the way back, looping is too much of a tempation for me, very tempting to just stop or quit short of my miles or goal.

Maura, shorts in 60 degree weather?, you Northerners are just too funny. But, it's all relative, you all have been COLD for such a long time. I have been in shorts for about a month now, tank tops are on there way soon.

AFM: I saw the podiatrist on Thursday for a last "talk" before surgery on my big toe (joint). Got to see the xrays and discuss what they are going to do. Chilectomy, with a cut in the toe-joint bone to help with having more flexibility in the joint and a pin to help it all heal in place properly. (metatarsal is out of place). We discussed healing and getting back out there. I can't drive (right foot) until after my first visit to see him. I will be in a boot most of the time and a surgical shoe for only driving purposes. Boot for about 4 weeks, but we'll see how I am healing (and how antsy I get). He said there should be NO reason why I can't train and do a FULL marathon in January 2012. Now I just need to sign up and hit the submit button.

Take care and have a nice weekend.

Hi everyone. I've been lurking for a while, but never knew what to say.

Tracy Good luck with your surgery. Glad your doctor supported marathon training for your recovery. Lay off on Maura for shorts in the 60s, I wore shorts and gloves in the 40s today, and Frank runs in shorts in the 20s. I do understand your point though, the only thing I'll run in in the 20s is a gym.

Joan Hope you are feeling better.

mla Nice kicks. I don't have enough courage to buy those.

Today I went out for a run by myself, since my running partner is sidelined with ITBS. As I came around a corner in the park, I found myself running with a guy who was going a little faster than I wanted to, but not faster than I could. AS we ran through the park, he taught me some new routes with some more hills I did not know about.
Everyone was calling him by name. I asked him about it, and it turns out that for 1 year in the 90s he owned the record for most 100+ milers in a year, at 16. He said a German did 17 the next year, and a couple of years after that a Canadian woman did 24, and last year she did 25.
So that's my brush with running greatness.

Happy first day of Spring! And, of course, we are expecting cold and maybe snow this week.

Finished 15 miles today. Just 4 more weeks to go. They published the race numbers and I am 19418. In the last corral, which is "blue". Race will start at 10:40. This will be the latest start I have ever had. Need to think over how I fuel up for it that morning, since they--like Disney--want you on the buses "early" (6:30).

Tracy I didn't realize you couldn't drive for a while. That really puts a crimp in things (other than your toe!).

Mike No shorts today. Glad your run went well and your "celebrity co-runner" gave you some new tips.

Jeremy You are so ready to rock your race. I'm really excited for you.

Off to airport to send DS back to California. Home for a week--yet I think I only saw him for 3 days!

Maura

Jeremy : Glad to hear your 10 miler went so well. Your going to have a great race :cheer2:

Maura & CindyLou Woohooo!!! It's getting here! How exciting!!! How are you handling the jacket? I've heard some aren't happy that it's screen printed.

Joan I hope the antibodics are working :flower3:

mla Cool new shoes!

Tracy You and the toe are in my thoughts.

AFM: I did my 2nd stretch class a week ago, followed with a 4 mile TM run the next morning and an interesting heel annoyace that I iced. Spring Ahead day came and the alarm went off at 6:30 though my body argued that it was truly 5:30. I am definitely not a morning person. Hubby was most impressed. Out I went for 10 sucky miles! My body decided at 5.5 that it was not happy with my for some reason. A quick pain in my upper leg that happily didn't bother me after that days run but my heel started up again. I finished my 10 miles. Monday was a typical day at the gym even with running. Oh was that a mistake LOL Pass the ice. And a reminder that I haven't been at it that long. "What do you mean I haven't been at this that long?" Just before I rolled my eyes I acknowledged that I haven't been pushing the running this hard for "that long". Darn I hate when she's right. So I had to cancel my miles today and hope I am back running later this week. My heel is a bit annoyed probably due to standing for over an hour for my cooking class. So pass the ice again. I plan on the gym tomorrow, at least I can do the weights. I'm sure some new form of torture can be figured out tomorrow till my heel is better.

I figure I should be healthly later this week because all the nice weather/temps will be long gone. :headache: So I've got the injury side covered ;) You all concentrate on having a great training week and lead into this wonderfully races that are on the horizon :cheer2: I'm off to get the ice pack & locate my gloves for next weekend.

OH!! Maura! I thought of you during those 10 miles LOL I looked at a pile of snow and though "hmmm my legs could use that from the hills. Maura does it." Shook my head and laughed. Not a chance! :lmao:

Maura - Goodluck figuring out Fueling. Maybe you can get some later longish runs the next couple of weeks.

Mike- It's neat go get to meet someone like that.

Tracey - I pray the surgery goes well and you'll but back running soon.

AFM - Thanks for the encouragement. I definitely feel better about April 3rd after the 10 miler. I'd feel a whole lot better if it was May something. Friday I got out and did .1 miles at about a 40:00 mi pace. For those that don't know, I live with my parents and help with the cooking and utilities. It was such a nice day, I convinced my mom to get outside for a little bit. She had a stroke a couple of years ago and suffers from mild Alzheimer's. She doing better now after changing up her medication. So we went to the one place I run to let dad get out a walk a bit and I walked with mom. We went from the parking lot to the end of an old steam train the set up and back. There are benches every 30ft or so in front of the train and mom was feeling good enough we didn't need to stop at every one. Considering six months ago when she was on that other medication she could barely stand up she doing real well. Dad went on walking and did about a mile. He didn't want to go to far because he knew mom would get antsy about getting back home. I think we're doing to try and get her out for a walk about once a week.

Saturday: My choir director at church had her wedding. After the wedding, I did 5 miles. The first half mile I walked as a warmup. The Next mile I was settling into the groove. I was testing out my run .11 mi/walk 1:00. From mile 1.5 to 4.5 my pace was in the 12:45-13:10 range which is right about goal pace. My hear rate was fluctuating between 55% (at end of walk) and 73% (at end of run) of Heart rate reserve. The final half mile, I totally ran at a 12:30 pace. I hadn't programmed enough interval into my Garmin for the entire workout.

This week Monday, I'm going to try and easy 5 miles at goal interval. Wednesday and Friday I have 2 options

Galloway Recommends Speed-work on Wednesday then a 6 mile Long Slow Run over the weekend.

Bingham/Hadfield Recommend a normal workout on Wednesday then 6-7 at race interval over the weekend.

I have a few days to decide. It may come down to whether I can get on the track Wednesday or now.

Hi everyone,

Is it too late to introduce myself? :wave2:

I should have found this thread before I started one about 2012 relay-ers encouraging one another. See, that's what happens when you don't read the directions!

Anyway, I am a new runner. I'm signed up for the 2012 Marathon relay with my DD, an experienced runner.

So far this week I've run almost 3 miles on Monday. I'm in the run 3, walk 1, type of running. It was a good run, I enjoyed it (definition of "enjoyment" has definitely changed since taking up running!). Decided that Monday was so nice, who needs rest and went Tuesday too. Did a little over 2 miles, miserable, horrible, hot, endless miles. I learned my lesson though. Rest days are important. Maybe especially when you are a formerly sedentary female, what the French call "a woman of a certain age", and pudgy.

I am already obsessing over coffee, bathroom breaks and the weather for the 2012 Marathon weekend. Freaking out a little...for the next 9 months!

Thanks for letting me ramble on!

Wasabi Girl - Welcome to the group. I also learned about rest days. In my case, it was 3 in a row. The thing is they weren't long days, but they were 2 of them were high intensity (for me). Good luck on your training.

wgirl welcome. how fun to run with your DD.

I see everyone is out there getting in their run/walks. Ah, the weather how much nicer to go out and not worry about hydration lines freezing or now my hands are hot and need to take off these gloves. Well, everyone except Tracy...hope you have a speedy recovery, keep up posted.

AFM..I'm running again! I did 5 miles on Monday and today and the pace wasn't too bad, but I can tell I've lost my base.

Jeremy Just wanted to let you know I've been where you are and it isn't easy taking care of parents, but at a later time in life you will will see how important it was. Things can be hard now, but when you look back, hopefully you will remember the good thing..at least that's how it is for me. :)

(definition of "enjoyment" has definitely changed since taking up running!).

It certainly does :) as for freaking 9 months out, about 2 weeks ago I had a couple of weird Marathon Weekend dreams. Odd. But they happen :)

Welcome Wasabi Girl!!!! Hope you and your DD have a wonderful adventure and the miles become smoother. :flower3:

Joan YAY!!!! On the running miles!!! :cheer2:

AFM: The normal gym week so far. The only thing was no running Mon or Tues. Tuesday is my usual run night and since my foot was feeling better I opted for the Elliptical. Today was the usual day with the TM at the end and even a couple of minutes running with no pain :) Going to try my class again on Friday. It's going to be chilly runs this weekend. Grrr. Gonna have to break out the face mask again. :(

Hope everyone's training week is going well!!! :cheer2:

Joan: Thanks for the welcome. Five miles sounds good to me.

Johde: again, thanks for the welcome. Makes it easier to keep going.

DianeL: I am glad to know that I am not the only one worrying about an event that is in January!

AFM: I'm looking for a cross training activity, so today I'm trying yoga (does yardwork count?). Also working on the what to eat. I guess I am looking for the "secret" that will make 13.1 miles "easiest". :) Have a great day everyone!

WasabiGirl, I say yardwork counts. Raking and snow shoveling totally! Hope the yoga class is tons of fun (again fun in that weird way)

Joan, I do have a photo of me from I think a month ago (huge snow pile behind me). Dressed in my blue jacket, black pants (over layers!) funky hat and of course the mask. It was after I finished my loop so I was posing since the entire 6 miles I kept chuckling over the image of finger pistol hold ups for hot cocoa  I'll load it to shutterfly and attach a link shortly :)

AFM: Today is a rest day! :yay:

Ok, here is the scary pic :) My face mask is lightweight, soft. In warmer or not windy runs it can also stay around my neck or it's so soft I've pulled it off and wrapped it around my wrist.

quick check in....

Diane What "jacket" are you referring to? Boston? I guess I'm not clued in to that. I hear you about breaking out the gear again for this weekend. I only hope I don't have to run in the heavy shirt. And I'm volunteering at Martian on Thursday and Friday--I may run it in place of my 13-miler. Glad you're pain-free now.

wasabi girlWelcome to teh fun! We "women of a certain age" can do great things! I started running 3 years ago (approaching 50) and have gotten a lot of good support from this great group of WISHers. And yoga is a great XT, IMO. I do a class 3x/week--2 of those are right after runs. And now I incorporate yoga stretches into any post-run.

Joan Glad to hear you're running again. Don't worry about the base. It will come back. I always freak out after I take down time (after a race, injury) and it's ususally a pointless freakout.

So final 20 miler coming on Sunday (cold) and then 3 weeks of taper (I'm ready). The thing I think most about for this race.....the post-race food treat! Yeah, I know, weird priorities!

Maura

Maura, yup the Boston jacket. I was hearing so much & told to go look at it. You are getting a Boston Marathon Jacket right? If a miracle happened and I did it I'd still end up getting one even if it's screen printed though I agree the embroidered style would be preferred. But come on, the jacket is almost prized more than the medal :lmao: I mean, you see that jacket coming to you and for me I want to :worship: So I was wondering if you and Cindy were going to get the jacket.

Food a priority? But of course! Heck even in training I'm dreaming of hot cocoa after winter runs. In the summer if I'm running in the late day I'm dreaming of a Sprite and pizza LOL Strangely, after a race I don't think about anything beyond my chocolate shake. For Disney I plan my celebration meal for the day after now. Day of the race I just want to eat and hope I can keep my face out of the food ;)

Can't wait to hear of you Boston racing Ladies adventures!

Just gonna jump back in here, feet first, and say I've missed the general forum. I've been gone too, too long. I look forward to catching up with everyone again, and getting to know new names/faces! Bear with me.

And now, on to me...:rotfl2:

It's cold again, *grumble grumble.* Not Michigan cold, but still... So I'll bundling up here for an afternoon run/break for work in a couple of hours. Just a short run, one to remind me that I'm motivated.

Diane:  for the face mask. It makes me laugh. Are we on the same running schedule? T/R/Sa I'm hoping for a warmer weekend than forecast for you and Maura.

Joan: I know your base will come back quickly! With 5 miles you're off to a good start.

Wasabi Girl: Welcome! That relay option looks like it'll be fun! I'm a fan of the yoga and pilates for XT.

Jeremy: I need to catch up with your story, but WTG with your 10 miler, training, and the DL 1/2. And I admire the care you're taking in caring for your parents. It sounds like your mom is doing really well and you're supporting your dad's needs too. :thumbsup2

Maura: I've been following your progress to Boston. :yay: I'll be watching you. Go Blue! I don't know how you fuel before your TRs, but it looks like you might be bringing food with you on the bus. 4 hours is a long time.

Mike: How cool to run with a celeb. And even cooler to have an impromptu running partner to show you new routes!

Tracy: I can't wait to hear your post-recovery successes, and have been thinking about you. I love to hear your podiatrist has the same positive attitude you do.
