Wish we could take our dog to WDW

There is only one regret when we go to WDW, we cannot take Harvey our seven year old Golden Retriever and miss him terribly , but at least he has fun at DSiL with her children and he is spoilt rotten until our return. Does anyone else have loved pets they have to leave behind?

We have to leave our dog behind as well. And since DL is approx. 8.000 miles away from us, we make a 2 week vacation out of it.
Fortunately he gets to stay with out friends who have 3 kids and a dog :)

I agree, we miss our 6 lb. yorkie when we go to Disney, but he does stay with my niece who spoils him. I heard that Universal has something like the first 3 floors of their hotels that are pet friendly (I have never stayed there), wish Disney would do the same with one of their resorts.

See below. My DSis usually babysits him for me. I worry the whole time about him though. I've been known to cry myself to sleep missing him

Hehe...I wonder how they would do on Pirates.

They should have a 'pet' day at WDW (MK only though).

We'd get flamed for sure over that one though. It is so much harder to plan vacations now that we have our furbaby!

One of my pugs stayed with me at the Caribbean Beach Resort once. She enjoyed it. Flame away if you wish. I don't care.

Okay, I'll bite...

Not to turn the discussion into something else, but why did your pug stay at CBR? Was there an emergency situation that you had to do and couldn't leave her?

Yup - all three of the Universal onsite hotels are pet friendly. I believe it is a two dog max though for each room. One of the posters on the Universal board had some great pics of his yellow labs lounging in the room. There is even a couple of pages in the room service menu dedicated to cat/dog meals and treats you can order from room service.

Disney has a kennel service their guests can use that is reasonably priced. Duie to the number of people with allergies to pets, I can definately see why Disney chooses kennels over allowing pets in the room.

I would have turned you in in a heartbeat. I probably would have stood and pointed and yelled, "Dog!" Well, Carribean Beach isn't a hotel I plan to stay in, so maybe we should make that the designated stinky pet hotel- or maybe the All Stars.

Didn't you go to the parks? What's the difference between leaving him alone at home for a pet sitter to visit and leaving him in a strange hotel room all day?

We have to leave our dog at a local kennel. She doesn't ride well in the car, and I can't imagine traveling with her anywhere. It's a nice kennel, and our vet uses it for his pets........but, still. We miss her a lot when we travel!

We have a 2 year old black lab and we left her in a kennel the first time we went away, but since then we have someone come over to the house and let her out, play with her a bit, etc.
It's sort of nervewracking worrying what damage she may be doing to the house, LOL, but I feel better knowing she's at home where she's comfy. Plus I think she's outgrown that..I hope.

I can honestly say I didn't miss her on any of the trips we've taken before, but I think I will next time, she has calmed down A LOT and is not that crazy puppy driving me nuts all day anymore, she's a good girl!

I still don't want to take her on vacation, though. ;)

Is it a 24 hour kennel? If not, what do guests do when they have to pick up their pets from the kennels? Universal also has a kennel, but guests can then bring their pet back to their room.

As for stinky pet hotels, we have stayed at Universal numerous times (without dogs), but have yet to see a single animal doo doo anywhere on the grounds. Nor have we ever heard a dog bark or smelled a dog. The staff there keeps the hotels spotless. One time we were at the Portofino and I observed a person allowing their dog to doody on the plaza by the bay. They just kept walking without picking it up. It was not more than 2 minutes later that a Universal staff person came running out with pooperscooper and cleaned it up.

I think Universal also limits certain rooms to pet owners so that the allergy thing is not an issue.

I love going to Universal after our WDW fix is satiated and occasionally seeing the dogs in the lobby and walking around.

My Scotties stay with my mother when we vacation. I know that they are very well-cared for and happy--make that fat and happy since "grandma" over treats them. I would love to take them, but in reality, it would be selfish and not in the best interest of my dogs. I would need to crate the dogs in the car for 10-12 hours each way, risk their safety at rest areas, etc. I think the traveling part would be very hard on my dogs. Then at the resort--if the dogs were allowed in the room--I would be stressing over house-keeping or maintainance letting them out, or scaring one of them and getting bitten. Plus, although my dogs are fairly well behaved, they will bark non-stop during thunderstorms. That is not fair for my hotel neighbors. I don't think I would be able to enjoy my trip. I would love it if the Swan/Dolphin would institute the company's pet-friendly policy, regardless of whether I would use it or not, but don't think that will happen in the near future.

I know there are comments about the cleanliness of pets and allergy issues, but there is a chance that an animal has stayed in any given hotel room. Owners of service animals cannot legally be denied lodging.

Did you sneak him or what? And if so, how did he do his business and walks without someone finding out?

The pets are actually kept in a separate wing at RPR, don't know about Portofino. That's gross to not pick up your pet poop at a hotel.

I don't think dogs are supposed to be in the lobbies, though.

Yes we went to the parks all day. She boarded at the kennels at Fort Wilderness during the day.

As far as you "turning us in" as I stated previously, I don't care.

I wouldn't mind pet friendly hotels at WDW as long as all of them weren't that way. Then those who don't want to be around animals don't have to be and those who want to bring their animals could easily. Personally, I would never leave a pet alone in a strange hotel room all day but then the kennels would be OK.

Pugdog, how did you hide your dog? Didn't he ever have to use the bathroom at night?

Personally, I wouldn't smuggle a pet into a hotel either. I would worry too much.

We are about to leave Dash for the very first time in April :guilty:

I have been doing research and narrowed it down to 5 places, then I started going to them and taking tours. I am still working on which is the best for him.

I know it's going to be hard on the actual day I go drop him off. Thankfully it will be a short weekend trip, with a second weekend trip the end of April as well. This summer though we have 2 longer (maybe 3) trips planned. My hope is that he will like it there and be used to it after the first 2 shorter trips, so the longer summer ones won't be too hard on him.
