Wish Trippers...Unite!! Volume One

From reading these posts I've heard about something called a GACs. I was curious to what that was? And does GKTW supply it? Sorry if these questions have already been answered!

Since we land on a Sunday in the late afternoon. We have decided that this day will just be for looking around the village, going to orientation and doing any activites at the village that night. We may also head over to Wal-Mart to pick up any essentials that we will need for the week. Does anyone know if the Wal-Mart near GKTW is open 24hours?

Another shopping related question hahaha!!! My DD LOVES to shop.. Does anyone know of any good shopping stores down in Florida. See where we live we only have one mall and a few stores like a wal-mart and a zellers. So we would love to spend some time shopping and browsing.

Also, one last question before I leave. Has anyone ever heard of a Dole Whip? If so could you please explain to me what this is? So many people have told me we have to try it. Yet I'm not quite sure where to get this or what it is.

Thanks everyone!! Sorry for all the questions!!!!:wizard:

From what I understand...GAC = Guest assistance card..maybe? Bill told me that you do recieve it at GKTW when you are at orientation. Bill, 5dwardves adn wendygrace should be able to tell you more about it. I might know some more after we get back!!

Wal-mart--don't know if it is open 24 hours or not...2 options...do a store locator search on Wal-Mart.com or wait until I get back and then I can tell you!! :rotfl:

Shopping...there are some outlet malls nearby and tons of stores for shopping, you will not be at a loss of places to shop. Again, do a search, or try wdwinfo or allearsnet they may have a link to local shopping meccas.

Dole whip...don't know...never had one...I think they are a like it or hate it thinkg. I think someone answered your question earlier...here it is...from lindababe...

Dole whip is pineapple juice and soft serve -or maybe fresh pineapple soft serve is a better description. or both. IT's YUMMY

For all of you looking for tr's about teenagers...no luck here either....my dd is only 4!! :lmao: Hope you can find something that will help you!!!

You are right, GAC does equal Guest Assistance Card.
There is general information about GACs on the disABILITIES FAQs thread, in post 6.
Unless they have changed things, you get paperwork at Give Kids the World (or from your wish granters, if you don't stay there) that is taken to Guest Services at one of the parks to actually get the GAC. The only GACs we head about before were all the same and gave front of the line access.
What I have heard about recently is more like the 'regular' (for want of a better word) GACs that are described in the FAQs thread, where the needs of the child determine what the GAC offers.
WISH kids who need the 'front of the line' amount of access are getting it, but I think in the past there were a lot more medically unstable kids having WISH trips who could hardly tour even with being able to go to the front of lines, so there are less kids on WISH trips who need that level of access.
Don't worry from this that your child's needs will not be met. I have not read a WISH trip report where they were not.

I am posting a link to this thread in the disABILITIES FAQs thread, so if it bounces down a few pages on the Community Board, you can still find it.
(Threads can end up on page 3 of that board after a few hours if it's busy.)

Anyway, you will find the link on post 3, in the area about MAW trips.
There are a few links to trip reports there - if you want to 'nominate' a trip report to have a link there, send me a PM or email with the link. I can't promise links to every trip report (or that post would be 2 pages long - LOL), but if you know of some I don't have links to that you felt were especially helpful, let me know.

OH MY LOOK AT YOU!!!!

I go to Vegas for a week and come back and you have made a ten page long wish thread.

I want to join! I know my bad for not completing my trip report yet, but I am photoshopping pics. I am a perfectionist yk. I can't abide red eye. Or didn't you know? OK. My goal is an installment every week or two. We used our GKTW world pass in Vegas last week. I am using possibly our last good weekend before frost comes to caulk and paint the exterior windows, and doors on our house. So I couldn't do this weekends installment.

I am still battleing with weekly episodes of salivary stones. I am writing thank you cards to GKTW and all of the sponsors too, so that takes precidence over my TR. Then, yearbook submissions for the homeschool yearbook were due on Oct 15th and I am submitting late by the 30th.

Here is my update on Vegas: We attended the MLG Halo 3 Lan and stayed with my cousin. We visited three of my favorite cousins i grew up with (like sisters and brothers to me) and an aunt I haven't seen in ten years. We saw amazing sites. The Vegas strip, the IMAX theater at the Luxor where we saw the 3D movie Seamonsters. On the way home through Kansas we stopped at the fike museum and saw some actual fossils found in Kansas of Seamonster/dinosoar type sea creatures which went along with the movie, I so love it when that happens. We saw the king tut museum. We did the motion ride at the LUXOR, a must do, very fun, didn't make anyone sick ride. We did the coney island arcade, they gave each of us ten dollars in quarters for the arcade! This give kids the world world pass is awesome. We are planning on using it as much as possible. My older children have decided to try to start competing in major league gaming tournaments all over the US and Canada next year. They are going to get sponsors. When we travel with them to tournaments, we will go to the places on the GKTW world pass. It is amazing that this is all coming together because I truely wanted my dd to see everything in the world. The world pass will allow us to do this and since I have family all over the US to stay with, the only limit for us is getting gas money. There is so much more than just amusement parks on the world pass, there are museums and science centers and educational places too. My heart is just welling up with so much gratitude for this opprotunity.

Trying again. Karen

Thanks to everyone who posted information. This helps out a lot!!!!!

I feel much better knowing that people didn't get their packages till just before the trip. I think I just might be able to breathe a sigh of relief for the moment

Momof2wCF: My DD is 16years old. So I would love to hear about all the things your DS liked at GKTW and also at any of the theme parks. I hear there is so much to do and I know we won't get it all done. But hopefully we can all pick out some stuff we really want to see and start with that first.

Hey Winnie Lover...welcome to the DIS and to the Wish Trip thread.

We received our GKTW package about 2 weeks before the trip, and our wish agency package about 5 days before our trip. While there was a little anxiety about waiting to get it, it really did come in plenty of time for us.

The teens that were at GKTW the same time that we were, really loved Universal and all the rollercoasters. My DS14 enjoyed the thrill rides there and at Disney, and we were not at GKTW all that much. When we were he took advantage of the pizza delivery, the pool and the ice cream parlor.

Yes, the Wal-mart by GKTW is a 24 hour store. It is cram packed during the day, so a late night visit may not be a bad idea to avoid all the crowds.

There is a lot written on GAC's. The more you read, the more you will see that it is something that people on the DisAbilities thread want to protect, as some have misued it. Some people have even tried to profit from GAC's by auctioning them on ebay. I think that is why so many answers on GACs are kind of vauge. Know that it is Disney's intent to provide you with the best experience for your child's special need and the GAC is one way in which they do that. It is a Guest Assitance Card and Universal has one as well. The CM's at Universal called it a "Golden Ticket" but it has another name, like Guest Pass or something. It works pretty much the same way as A GAC. I expected to go to Guest Services to get my son's GAC, but it was in our orientation packet from GKTW. There were several boxes on the bottom, indicating where the GAC was issued, one for GKTW, and that was checked on DS's. It is my impression that the policies on the GAC are something that are in flux, dependent on the CM you speak with or the nature of the special need. My son's needs were always accomodated as a result of the wonderful CM's and the GAC. As the parent of a child with special needs, you will find that the GAC will make your trip a lot smoother and provide the CM's with the information they need to make your visit to WDW the best that it can be.

There are lots and lots of shopping malls in Orlando. Some of the couture (translated expensive) nature, some outlet malls some just the run of the mill kind. I believe many are on international drive and I also think there is a flyer at the Gingerbread House at GKTW about them...

Dole Whips...mmmmmm....I wanted one but didn't get it :guilty: Here is the menu from Aloha Isle in Adventureland at the MK as posted on Allears.net....

Dole Whip Soft Serve (pineapple, vanilla, chocolate, or swirl) - $2.89

Pineapple Float - pineapple Dole Whip with pineapple juice $3.99

Coke or Root Beet Float with vanilla Dole Whip $3.69

Fresh Cut Pineapple Spear $1.49
Assorted Chips $2.39

Pineapple Juice $1.69
Orange Juice or Apple Juice $2.39
Hot Cocoa, Hot Tea $1.69
Nescafe Coffee $1.69/$1.89
Bottled Water $1.25 or $2.00
Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Root Beer, or Minute Maid Lemonade $2.09, $2.39

I know I have seen pics of them on the Dis....

Hope this helps.

rwrocksme - one of the kids we met while at the hospital went to Disney for his wish and brought his best friend. He made that part of the wish. He's an only child (he's also 13) and his mom told me that having his friend along was a fabulous thing. My DD's friend (she's 17) at school had a liver transplant and she took a friend on her wish trip to Hawaii; she wasn't an only child (she has a sister who went too), so just thought you should know that bringing a friend (or 2?!) might work out for your DD - something to ask. My son's first wish choice was to go to the Yankee All Star game (Summer'08) - too many wish kids already (we asked this summer, so if you have an idea, jump on it!), so they said we could ask for '09, but he didn't want to wait that long and the All Star game won't be at Yankee Stadium on '09. His second choice was Superbowl '08, but again, too many wish kids already and he didn't want to wait till '09 (his sister will be in college next year and he wants her to be part of it). His third trip was the Disney Land and Sea cruise (and an exursion to Atlantis), but MAW said they don't do the Land and Sea cruise anymore because it's too complicated and kind of like 2 wishes.

PezPez, I've been reading various trip reports and have been noticing that Universal seems to be really appealing to teenagers. My kids haven't been to Disney/Universal since they were little, and I'm thinking they'll be into all of it, but we won't have to make a mad dash to Dumbo now that they're older! Takes some of the pressure off!

Winnielover - Nov 10th is very close! You must be getting really excited! Are you staying at GKTW?

Who'syourmickey - very cool about the World Pass. I am not sure if we're going to get that. Our rep said that because we didn't want to stay at GKTW, she wasn't sure if we'd get the typical Orlando package like those that do stay there, but I think it's great that they give people the chance to go to other places throughout the year.

Thanks to everyone on this thread sharing info. It is so, so helpful!

Interesting about GAC and front of the line. I guess we'll see how that goes. When DS was first coming up with wish ideas, he was leaning more towards sports, but then those didn't come through and he knew of 2 other kids that he met at the hospital who did Disney and really enjoyed it. DS was in the hospital for about 4 months and lost a ton of muscle mass while waiting for his transplant (he was hooked up to a heart machine and also spend part of the time on dialysis until his kidneys started working again, so mobility was pretty much out a good part of the time). He went from the hospital to a rehab hospital as an inpatient for close to 2 months, and left there abe to walk again but had a wheelchair as backup. He was really weak, and after lots of PT/OT, he got most of his strength and endurance back, but he's still not 100%. He's so, so much stronger and almost 100%, but he runs out of steam more quickly, and when he's done, he's really done (steroids contribute to this too - patience is a toughy when you're on that stuff). So when he was last in Disney, age 6, we could go from 8 in the morning till 10 at night, walking and doing and seeing everything. He really was amazing. Now, we're going to have to go slower and front of the line will really help - standing for long periods of time really does him in after awhile. But when you look at him, he looks totally fine and normal, so I wonder if it will be hard to get front of the line privilege without them thinking we're taking advantage. I am not one of those people who likes to take advantage of things - totally the opposite. But I do want his trip to be totally fun and easygoing and I don't want to come up with itineraries that wipe him out, because he won't handle that well. And if I have to explain this whole story to a CM, they might put us in the front of the line just to shut me up! Sorry for rambling!

Thank you so much 5dwares!! This sure does help! I've been searching the net looking for shopping malls and stores close to GKTW and to the Theme parks. I have found a few that my DD might want to check out. I guess we'll just have to see if we end up having time to check them out though!

YUM the Dole whip sounds delicious we are all real pineapple fans in our household. So I think this might be something we would really like to try.

Regarding the GAC's it would be awesome if we got one. But we wouldn't be too disappointed if it didn't happen. As long as we didn't have to wait in to long of lines we should be fine. My DD has no problem walking but can't stand sun for too long. She also wears a brace so standing inline for to long(30+ mintues) can really iritate her leg.

We are very excited to hear that Wal-Mart is open 24hours. We are the type of family who if given the chance would much rather go shopping really late at night 12-1ish. We love to avoid crowds and be able to look around for a while without people hitting our carts! In the small town we live in though, Everything's closed by 10 except the gas stations which close at 11pm and the quick mart which is opened 24hours.

Yes November 10th is definitely getting close. It's only 20 days away but we're not counting!!!:rolleyes1

We are staying at GKTW and we are super excited. We have heard some wonderful things about the place. It just sounds so magical. I don't think any of us can really imagine just how magical this trip is going to be for our family!:wizard:

Hey Patticake:

My wish child is also a transplant receipient. On top of that he has seizures and Asbergers. None of those challenges are "visual" disabilities, however his health is such that he requires a GAC. I am sure your son will receive one. My impression is that for those staying at GKTW on their wish trip, that it is an automatic thing. I'm not 100% sure on that, but all the wish kids we saw had their GAC and their GKTW button on at the village. If you are not staying at GKTW, I am sure that you will be able to obtain one at Guest Services. GAC's have an area where the CM can stamp images on them for varying levels of needs. These seem to be something that everyone needs top secret clearance for knowing, as many try to replicate them in order to get a GAC and abuse it. Someone on the Dis wrote about a family who were taking turns in a wheelchair rented from guest services as the "disabled" person so that they could get onto rides faster. It is those types of people that those who truly need extra assistance and who use the DisAbilities boards for information sharing, don't want to know too many details about GAC's.

Something that you should know is that it is NOT a front of the line pass. It is a need accomdation pass. When you arrive at an attraction, you need to go to the CM at the entrance, show them your GAC and they will ask you how many are in your party and then accomodate you. Sometimes that means taking you in through the back entrance, sometimes that means directing you to a seperate waiting area while they prepare to board your party...each individual attraction, because of the way it is engineered, has a different approach to accomodating you. On some attractions we went through the fast pass line, on others we followed a CM through the maze of back hallways where we would board the attraction through "the back door" so to speak. It is a definite help for those who have needs that make Disney a huge challenge.

Hope this helps...

Hi WinnieLover -
There's an outlet mall - Lake Buena Vista Shoppes - on Vineland that I like. They have vanity fair/levis, a character outlet, and a bunch of others. The Florida Mall is a big enclosed mall, then there's the premium outlets, the mall at Millenia, and another outlet mall who'se name I've forgotten. Shopping opportunities ABOUND!

I am loving this thread because it helps me relive our wonderful trip from May 2006. One thing that really helped me during the planning phase was knowing the schedule of events at GKTW. Can someone who has been there recently post that for the people whose trips are coming up? It has changed since we were there.

Also make certain your wish child wears his/her GKTW button everyday in the parks. That is what allowed us to bypass lines for the character greetings. We were waiting in line one time and the character handler saw Mickey's button. He told us to come up to the front, that we were never to wait in line to meet characters. Be sure to go to Character Connection at EPCOT. It was the most priceless character meeting we had the entire trip!

ok..I feel like I am losing it. Trying to pack and I feel like there is something I am missing or something that I have totally forgotten about. UGH!! So what do I do...get on the DIS for a break!!! :lmao: I think I am mainly waiting for DH to finish up his packing, but he is at work and will have to wait for him to get home. :headache: He is an overpacker, so I will have to watch him! :rotfl:

WYM.....glad to see you back! Your mini trip to vegas sounded fun! I can't wait to see what is all on that world's pass! :cool1: btw...the arnica worked very well on dd's eye, it is almost back to normal!!!!!!!!!!

Elisa, thanks for the info on GAC - very helpful! We did talk to our friends from the hospital who went to Disney over the summer for their son's wish, and they gave us some scoop about lines, saying that they usually wound up on the fast pass line. That will work fine for us - just trying to keep DS from getting totally wiped out from standing too long (which also means going slow, taking some breaks, and not attempting to do everything). He has made so much progress in the past 4 or 5 months that Disney is now a possibility - prior to that, he didn't think he'd be able to handle it. I'm still in the process of reading your trip report and loving it!!! Hope your family is doing well!

Iluvmickeymouse - Have a wonderful, amazing time!!!

Question that might be stupid - I've been reading a bunch of threads and see people saying 'subscribing' which I think is a way to find out that a thread of interest has been updated. Is that right? I'm thinking you can subscribe without saying so, too, right? I'm still pretty new, so I don't navigate all that well.

Patticake:

I don't know why they do the "subscribing" thing either. This is the only board I have ever been on though, so it might be internet lingo that I am not familiar with. On the DIS, once you post on a thread, you get an update on that thread and then the email says something like " There may be other replies also, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again." As long as you click onto the link of the thread and read the updates you will always get the updates...

I read where you said you were off site after your son's transplant, for 2 months...been there done that. Glad he is on the road to recovery. My DS started on a large dose of steroids, and now he is almost completely off them....HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!!! Wish he was on this dosage when we were at WDW...LOL...oh well.

Hope you have a great trip!
