My Cheerleading squad that I coach is going to competition tomorrow. We have almost 30 girls (mostly 11 & 12). For most of them, this is their second year on a competition squad, and for a few it is their first year. Last year, they took 3 squads to states and anounced that a 4th would go. We took 5th place and lost 4th by 3 points. Probably lost by needing more smiling!

I have been so nervous this week. I actually have done good in the loss department. The pounds seemed to just melt away this week. I started at 148.4 on Monday, and by today my scale was showing 145.6 this morning. I hope I keep this up. Last night we were up till midnight, cornrowing hair and putting curlers in. Again today, we spent most of the day doing hair and had a game tonight. It was freezing and I ended up drinking a hot chocolate. I counted it as 6 points, because that was all I could find listed. YIKES. It was so cold though, that it was worth it. I have some Kashi bars, kashi cereal, soy crips and bottled water packed for tomorrow. I will stop and get a sandwich without mayo to take. I was afraid of not having any control of what I was going to eat, but luckily we were allowed to bring food.

Anyway, my girls could really use some good luck, pixie dust and prayers. The crying after last years loss was so hard to watch, I really want them to win tomorrow so that they can move on to states. I want them all to taste victory, and see how their hard work pays off. I am mostly worried about some of the mounts not going up. They have worked so hard on these, and some are really hard. The past week, they have struggled so hard getting some of them up. At our game tonight (we didn't let them mount), they really looked good doing their routine.

I will post tomorrow night and let everyone know how they did. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks Melanie

Hi Melanie, it sounda like you and your cheerleaders have put an awful lot of work into this. I will keep my fingers crossed for you sending loads of PD your way:wizard: Hope that you have a great time and those mounts work out just right!!

Way to go with your weight loss and planning your food for the trip.

GOOD LUCK:wave2:

Good for you for having your plan, Melanie. That's the way to do it! Good luck to the girls. And, hopefully, it won't be too cold for you.

Good luck to your girls, Melanie!!! I am sure they will do wonderful! :)

Good Luck to your girls Melanie! I spent MANY years enjoying cheerleading with my Daughter. We both LOVED the competitions the MOST. She has lots of trophies and ribbons that she still cherishes. Cheering is the FAVORITE memory she has of her school years. She cheered from 2nd grade right thru 12th.

Let us know how you do --- and post a couple pictures of your group if you can.
:D

How did they do, Mel? I missed this last night. I hope things went well for your girls.

Well.........It was an absoluetly draining day. I was up at 5:45 am, and we didn't leave the head coach's house until almost 9am. Some of the girls wore the shower caps to bed that we used to keep their hair dry during the game on Saturday night. We spent most of the morning, drying hair and curling with curling irons. It was only a few girls though, and most of the hair turned out terrific with no extra help. It was the girls that were done later on Saturday and during the game that had a problem.

Everything happened so fast this year. We got to go in and see the first group perform. I think it was good for the girls to get to see this. They pointed out a lot of mistakes and really saw why tight arms and staying on the mat was important.

We were 2nd on in the second group. The girls were all so nervous, and we were trying not to show them that we were too. The girls went out and nailed it. There were a couple things, like one mount came down early (but the spotters caught her), one girl ended up in a row by herself. Otherwise they looked terrific. They really got the crowd into it, and they looked so good and brought such personality to the routine. The girls were screaming and jumping up and down as they ran off stage. They knew they looked good and all our mounts execpt the one went off without a hitch. They were crying outside, and everyone was hugging. It was so awesome!

Then we went to lunch and learned we had a safefy violation. Pretty much, if you have a safety violation you are done because the points deductions are usually 20 points and above. It was supposed to be because of a worm move one of our tumblers did during the last part of the routine. We had also been told by the head of the cheer league and her assistant that the move was ok. Well I guess the safety judges didn't like it. They had to pull out the rule book, and rewatch the tapes. That basically ruined lunch, and we were so bummed during the older girls routines in the 3rd group.

Well we placed 4th, which sends us to states. We were all just so thrilled and happy. The girls were crying tears of happiness this time. We did get a safety that cost us 25 points, and it turns out that no team has ever moved on to states after getting a safety. That means that our score was so good for the routine, that we would have placed 1st or 2nd without the Safety. We won't find out till all the scores come out. I am so proud of them. We now go to State Competitions on Nov. 1st.

By the time I drove home, my body was crashing from all the adrenoline, excitement, sadness from thinking we weren't going to move on because of the safety and excitement when they called our name. After I ate dinner, I passed out on the couch. I only woke up long enough to crawl into bed.

Thanks for everyones prayers. I am so glad they experienced this. We will definately take that part out of the routine for States.

Melanie

What an awesome experience for those girls, Melanie!! Best of luck at states!

Melanie --- where is states? If its not too far from me maybe I can talk my daughter in to going to watch with me!

It's in NJ. Go figure! I believe that PA & NJ do states on the same day in the same location. I don't have all the specifics because our league gets us a chartered bus from this point on.

Ok, here I found it on the Eastern Region web page:

November
Sat 1st
2003 South & West
Cheer Qualifier
Sovereign Bank Arena
Trenton, NJ

I am not sure how you would go by getting tickets. I know that all of our parents had to have an exact count, and I heard that only 150 would be sold at the door. Of course, it always seems no one ever knows what they are talking about.

I don't think I'll be traveling to NJ. BUT if it would have been closer to Harrisburg area I would have considered it.
:D

Congrats to you and your girls! I am glad that all your hard work paid off and that the safety did not hurt you.
