I wished I would have know about renting 3 years ago before we bought our DVC. We just completed renting all our points. Just looked online to see how much a studio at SSR would cost for 3 nights. Total was $1134.00. The renter purchased 55 points for the same reservation. I wish we would have rented, but glad we own now!:)

We would have saved so much money if we would have found you guys sooner!

Renting points is a lot better deal then being a member. This will dawn on people as time goes on. People are renting their points for give away prices, no where near what the rooms rent for.

Depends on your perspective, but how can renting points at $10/pt be cheaper than owning points at approximately $6/pt if you plan on using your points? I'd certainly agree that it's cheaper to rent points than pay cash most of the time, but I'm missing your logic.

I am starting to join that school of thought that renting is indeed better than owning. I am very interested in DVC, but other than being forced to take vacations (which IS actually a good thing for me), I am starting to wonder how the benefits of renting can be exceeded with ownership:

1) No financial committment other than your next reservation
2) Unless the market drastically changes, you can stay substantially cheaper by renting (unless you really want to crunch the numbers for decades in advance).
3) Not locked into staying at DVC resorts, can mix it up with the other deluxe resorts w/o worry about implications of point loss/banking, etc.
4) Not fighting for reservations like for some DVC seasons (December, F&W, etc). Dont have to rush to book 7-11 mos in advance which we can rarely plan that far in advance.

If supply/demand equatoin for DVC really does increase substantially, then renting points may also get more expensive. But in that same vein, then owners would then also be competing more for reservations which are already very difficult to book for certain times of the year, so this issue is a wash IMO.

As a new owner, I guess I don't understand that much about renting. If there are times that people can't make reservations at the 7 month window as owners who want to trade resorts, how can renting from someone be better?

As a newbie, I really appreciate being able to make reservations for spring break in April for the following March. I would think there are times, especially the busy ones, when you would need that 11 or 7 month window to get what you want-where you want it.

Plus, being the paranoid type, I would be waiting for something to go wrong in the rental process; cancellations, bad checks and no one wanting my points are 3 that come to mind. Just me.

I don't see how renting makes more sense financially than owning, especially for those who bought DVC several years ago when you could've bought resale for about $65/pts.

The way I look at it, that $65/pt could be rented out and you would fully recover your initial investment in 11 yrs. and from that point on, you vacation at top notch resort for the cost of your maintence fee. If you use those points yourself, your rate of recovery would be even greater (based on discounted rack rate) and even more faster if you're talking about 1 or 2 bedrooms.

Whether you rent or buy, DVC is really a no-brainer for those looking to vacation at WDW.

There is NO WAY that renting would have been more economical than buying when I did in 1992.

345 pts x $51.50 = 17,767.50 initial purchase
345 pts x $39.87 = 13,755.15 total dues for 13 yrs.

$31, 522.65 total so far.

345 x $10 (average rental fee) x 13 yrs = $44,850

Hmmm, I saved so far, $13,327.35 over renting points, and don't forget about the free park passes we got during the first 8 years or so. Plus, I had the peace of mind of NOT booking through "trust", sending money to a third party, being able to book at the 11 month window instead of hoping accomodations are available. Nope, I'll take owning any day over renting. And never mind how much we've saved over a room at a Deluxe resort, prior to DVC a Contemporary tower room was our normal choice.

Plus, this example only divides the initial cost of membership over the 13 years I've owned so far, the saving wil just keep rolling in until 2042! :)

There's one thing here that I think everyone's missing.

It's not about the money... It's about the memories..;)

Life is way too short to sweat the small stuff.

I don't see how renting is a better value then owning, unless one either can't afford to own right now, or feels that they will not be able to really use their points.
My points cost me $5.5 each (based on the current fees).
As fees go up, I suspect rental prices will go up as well.

I think the comparison depends more on what risks a person is comfortable with, and what they expect to happen long term.

5 years ago, I was more comfortable paying the full Disney Rack rate, for a villa at OKW, then the risk of either renting points or buiyng a membership.
At this time, I am comfortable with the risks of ownership, but still don't think I would be comfortable with renting, unless I had points transferred directly to me (which I have to be an owner to do).

I know that most rental transactions go fine, but it is quite a risk when one is planning an expensive vacation, that they are not likely to take again for a few to several years.

I have been vacationing with my DVC points for the past 9 years with multiple trips each year to the DVC resorts. I could sell today and MAKE money on the transaction. This means the accomodations for all of those vacations would have cost me nothing. I wouldn't be able to do that if I had been renting the points for the past 9 years.

I think anyone that maximizes their DVC membership, is too obsessive to be a frequent renter.

It's the difference in renting a house and owning a house. You can't make changes when you want to, you have to have the owners permission. I like to be in control of my vacations so renting points every year is not an option.

It is a nice option, but for frequent DVC stays, I would much rather own. Renting would get old real quick Im sure for me and the renter!

I agree, LIFERBABE; when we're "home" at SSR this December, I'm going to redecorate our 2 BR: paint the walls some nice graphic blues and reds, and get IKEA furniture.... ;)

It would stink to have to go through a 3rd Party (the point owner) for every trip.

ROFL Doc! Just dont knock any walls out!

When I said changes, I meant ressie changes! Sounds like the Contemporary Resort could use your decorating skills!:p
