WISH Biggest Loser 8 - Couch to 5K Challenge

Did my run and actually stayed on the treadmill for 46 minutes. Then I moved to my ball and did crunches and my arm exercises. I decided I wasn't quite done so I did Turbo Jam Ab Jams and that's 20 minutes. I had a total of 80 mins and 677 cals when I was done.

I can't decide what I'll do today. I want to run outside but it's suppose to be super windy. That doesn't sound like fun. I may do Turbo Jams Cardio Party or something at home and then walk or run just a lil on the treadmill. I'll just have to see what the day brings. My sides and back are pretty sore from the ab workout so I must;ve worked them hard.

and looking forward to it, I think! I read the entire thread, switched & read the C25K info and printed it out, and am excited to have a plan!

I quit smoking 3 months ago, and gained 25 pounds. This was on top of some extra pounds I had picked up over the years........ Not liking the way it looks....... I like even less that nothing is really fitting me anymore.....

I used to be a runner, way back. We also joined the Y, but their schedule doesn't always match mine, and this I can do anytime. We have a treadmill, (currently in the garage - the little bars really hold all the coiled extension cords so nicely......) that is being moved into the house, plus we live in Florida, so the winter weather is not really an issue.

I had seen the Royal Family 5K info, but didn't know how to get rolling, and now I guess I don't really have anymore excuses................ Just got back to work today for a 1/2 day today after being sent home on Monday. I was really sick! But, I am planning on starting on Sunday!

Wish me luck!

PS - Has anyone done this program with a child? Or heard of anyone that has? My son is 9. He has almost completely outgrown his childhood asthma but has weight issues due to the steroids he was on for so long, plus his multiple illnesses & inablilty to do a lot of exercise. His Dr. says it's ok to run, play ball, etc. I just wanted to see if this would maybe be too strenuous? But I guess lots of kids run 5K's.......

Finished Thursday! If I can run, anyone can. I totally believe in this program. Good luck to everyone else working on it.

good luck Tig!

Bug congrats on finishing!!!

I just wrapped up week 4, and start week 5 on Monday

Tig - I plan on doing it w/dd, who is 11 1/2...I would think it's okay because he can go at his own pace. I'm actually thinking I will be too slow for dd!

This thread has inspired me - I'm going to do this! I've been thinking about it for a year or so. Plantar fascitis, a sore knee and too much weight has kept me from doing it but those excuses are now in the past.:woohoo: Going to get a good pair of shoes today and start!

For those of you who use the treadmill how do you decide what speeds to use?

I forgot - I also tend to get shin splints...ouch! Any tips to avoid those?

Congratulations, Lynsey! Completing C25K is a huge accomplishment!

Hello Jennz! A good pair of shoes is a great place to start. If you have a running store in your area, it can be an invaluable resource for getting shoes that are right for your own unique stride. The right pair of shoes can make the difference between a happy start to running and injury.

As for deciding what speeds to use, it is so personal, and can vary even by treadmill. You want to be walking at a pace that elevates your heart rate but that also allows you to recover from the run segments. For many people, this is somewhere between 3 and 4 mph. To get to your first run speed, bump up to the point where you have to run. That is a good place to start. You can run at that speed or go a little faster if you feel you can It should feel hard but it should also feel like you can keep it up. The number is not as important as how it feels to you. You want to be working hard, but not so hard that you can't talk.

As for avoiding shin splints, getting the right shoes makes a huge difference. Also, some have suggested that stride length can contribute to shin splints, if your front leg is reaching way out in front of your body. A gentle warm up and cool down can also be beneficial. And finally, icing your shins after a run can reduce inflammation and prevent pain the next day.

Good luck!

Thanks Corrina! I did some of the strengthening exercises today for my shins and will watch my stride. :thumbsup2

I posted this on the BL thread but had to post here too...I'm so excited, my family and I are doing the couch to 5k program together! I told them when we go they can just go ahead without me and then they'll catch up with me on the way back We found a great place to go, very wide sidewalk by dd's cheer gym. I got new sneakers today and was explaining to the sales guy what I was doing and he said, "Great! What 5k are you running?" I was like what the heck I'm not actually committing to finishing it! DH was there and jumped on it though, so we are doing a 5k in May. Yes it's a long time from now but I'm fine with that. lol

Piglet - just noticed your sig line and love it!! Every time I hear new things about Walt he amazes me. I would love to talk to him for an hour! (or more)

DS9 did AWESOME! Asthma & all. We had to walk once when we were supposed to be running, cuz he was really sucking air, but not wheezing, so we just kept on truckin! I was so impressed.

I did ok, too. My legs are a little tired & weak tonight, but not too bad.

We'll do it again, I think on Tuesday. And, I am stopping to get a scale on my way home.

Thanks for all the support!

That's great!!! Thanks for the update. Now you'll feel obligated to go to keep your ds doing it.;)

Wow! I thought Halloween and the scary things were over!!!! NOT!!!!! Let's just say that prior to my DS9, I weighed about 60 pounds less than I do now!!!:scared: How on Earth did that happen??????

Can't wait for W1D2 tomorrow! Almost wish it was now!!!!

Those darn scales! On the bright side you are now on your way down, right? And plenty motivated!:banana

Wow! There are lots of new people joining this thread. Welcome! I am starting W5 today (was supposed to be yesterday, but I wasn't feeling well). My DH has joined me. He is a runner, but has taken a couple months off, so joining me at this stage is good for him. I really like having someone to run with! he goes a little slower than I do, but I enjoy just clogging along behind him. We are doing a 5K together on Thanksgiving. We won't totally be done with the program, but we should probably be able to run about 20 minutes of it by then. Can you believe it? 20 minutes?!?! Crazy.

Good luck everyone. I look forward to hearing about your progress.

Does this get easier? We struggled a bit today.... Also, brought our dog, Hannah Montana, this time. She loved it!

Is there anything to make it easier?

We ran at night tonight. Our first time was early on Sunday. I think it's easier for us in the morning, but we can't do that during the week with school.

We'll keep plugging......

Good music can make it feel easier, for sure! Other than that, it's time and practice. You're training your body to do something amazing, and when you challenge it like this, that makes it get stronger. In that way, it does get easier over time. Of course as soon as you are stronger, the program ups the ante and challenges you again.

The first few weeks, you may be sore the day after you run. That does go away after a few weeks, thank goodness!

iluvtig - it has been getting easier for me. I struggled the first few weeks. I had been a walker, but never a runner. I actually repeated W2 for 2 weeks because I just wasn't ready to move on. I think that helped me a lot, because it gave my body a chance to get used to running before I turned it up another notch.

Just take it at the pace you need to. I am doing the program by time not distance, and I think that has made it a little easier too. I don't run as fast as I think the program thinks I am. It says to run 5 minutes or half a mile. Great, but my 5 minutes is not half a mile, and I am totally OK with that. I am just glad that I can go 5 minutes. I will work on speed later! I am on W5D2 today - I think that has me running 8 minutes! Crazy. 5 minutes was enough to kill me a week or so ago (I think I was whining about it on this board actually) but I am pretty good at 5 now. We will see how well I transition to 8.

But good luck. Keep checking in, and hopefully we can help each other reach this goal!

Hi everyone! I hope it is ok if I join the group too! Although, I am not on the WISH thread...I just searched the DIS for C25K and found this lovely thread!

I downloaded the App last Thursday and tonight I finally got out and did Week 1 Day 1. I have been the biggest couch potato since 2006! I have been yo-yo weight loss and weight gain....since 2006 too. I was 250 in 2006 went on the South Beach Diet...got down to around 200 then became pregnant and gained 85 lbs. lost 55 lbs. now I gained 30 lbs...so I am back up to 260! :scared1: I really would love to be under 200! I want to start the diet again soon, but for now I will start with the hardest thing first! The exercising!

I was really suprised on how easy the 1st day was. The first 60 seconds of running I did not like! My ankles were hurting, but after the first run each segment of running got easier and easier. It seemed like just when I couldn't run anymore it was time for me to walk! How did they know I was tired! So far, so good!
